Complex low energy tetrahedral polymorphs of group IV elements from first-principles

The energy landscape of carbon is exceedingly complex, hosting diverse and important metastable phases, including diamond, fullerenes, nanotubes and graphene. Searching for structures, especially those with large unit cells, in this landscape is challenging. Here we use a combined stochastic search strategy employing two algorithms (AIRSS and RG2) to apply connectivity constraints to unit cells containing up to 100 carbon atoms. We uncover three low energy carbon polymorphs (Pbam-32, P6/mmm and I-43d) with new topologies, containing 32, 36 and 94 atoms in their primitive cells, respectively. Their energies relative to diamond are 96 meV/atom, 131 meV/atom and 112 meV/atom, respectively, which suggests potential metastability. These three carbon allotropes are mechanically and dynamically stable, insulating carbon crystals with superhard mechanical properties. The I43d structure possesses a direct band gap of 7.25 eV, which is the widest gap in the carbon allotrope family. Silicon, germanium and tin versions of Pbam-32, P6/mmm and I-43d also show energetic, dynamical and mechanical stability. The computed electronic properties show that they are potential materials for semiconductor and photovoltaic applications.

Quantum magnetism in molecular spin ladders probed with muon-spin spectroscopy

We present the results of muon-spin spectroscopy ($μ^{+}$SR) measurements on the molecular spin ladder system (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4(1-x)}$Cl$_{4x}$, [Hpip=(C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)]. Using transverse field $μ^{+}$SR we are able to identify characteristic behaviour in each of the regions of the phase diagram of the $x=0$ strong-rung spin ladder system (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_4$. Comparison of our results to those of the dimer-based molecular magnet Cu(pyz)(gly)(ClO$_{4}$) shows several common features. We locate the crossovers in partially disordered (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4(1-x)}$Cl$_{4x}$ ($x=0.05$), where a region of behaviour intermediate between quantum disordered and Luttinger liquid-like is identified. Our interpretation of the results incorporates an analysis of the probable muon stopping states in (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_4$ based on density functional calculations and suggests how the muon plus its local distortion can lead to a local probe unit with good sensitivity to the magnetic state. Using longitudinal field $μ^{+}$SR we compare the dynamic response of the $x=1$ strong-rung material (Hpip)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ to that of the strong-leg material (C$_{7}$H$_{10}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ (known as DIMPY) and demonstrate that our results are in agreement with predictions based on interacting fermionic quasiparticle excitations in these materials.

Exchange constants in molecule-based magnets derived from density functional methods

Cu(pyz)(NO3)2 is a quasi one-dimensional molecular antiferromagnet that exhibits three dimensional long-range magnetic order below TN=110 mK due to the presence of weak inter-chain exchange couplings. Here we compare calculations of the three largest exchange coupling constants in this system using two techniques based on plane-wave basis-set density functional theory: (i) a dimer fragment approach and (ii) an approach using periodic boundary conditions. The calculated values of the large intrachain coupling constant are found to be consistent with experiment, showing the expected level of variation between different techniques and implementations. However, the interchain coupling constants are found to be smaller than the current limits on the resolution of the calculations. This is due to the computational limitations on convergence of absolute energy differences with respect to basis set, which are larger than the inter-chain couplings themselves. Our results imply that errors resulting from such limitations are inherent in the evaluation of small exchange constants in systems of this sort, and that many previously reported results should therefore be treated with caution.

Elucidation of the helical spin structure of FeAs

We present the results of resonant x-ray scattering measurements and electronic structure calculations on the monoarsenide FeAs. We elucidate details of the magnetic structure, showing the ratio of ellipticity of the spin helix is larger than previously thought, at 2.58(3), and reveal both a right-handed chirality and an out of plane component of the magnetic moments in the spin helix. We find that electronic structure calculations and analysis of the spin-orbit interaction are able to qualitatively account for this canting.

A local Fock-exchange potential in Kohn-Sham equations

We derive and employ a local potential to represent the Fock exchange operator in electronic single-particle equations. This local Fock-exchange (LFX) potential is very similar to the exact exchange (EXX) potential in density functional theory (DFT). The practical software implementation of the two potentials (LFX and EXX) yields robust and accurate results for a variety of systems (semiconductors, transition metal oxides) where Hartree Fock and popular approximations of DFT typically fail. This includes examples traditionally considered qualitatively inaccessible to calculations that omit correlation.

Transverse field muon-spin rotation measurement of the topological anomaly in a thin film of MnSi

We present the results of transverse-field muon-spin rotation measurements on an epitaxially grown 40 nm-thick film of MnSi on Si(111) in the region of the field-temperature phase diagram where a skyrmion phase has been observed in the bulk. We identify changes in the quasistatic magnetic field distribution sampled by the muon, along with evidence for magnetic transitions around $T\approx 40$ K and 30 K. Our results suggest that the cone phase is not the only magnetic texture realized in film samples for out-of-plane fields.

Muon-spin relaxation study of the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$)

We present the results of zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements made on the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$). Spontaneous muon-spin precession indicative of quasistatic long range magnetic ordering is observed in Sr$_{2}$FeOsO$_6$ within the AF1 antiferromagnetic phase for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=135 \pm 2~{\rm K}$. Upon cooling below $T_2 \approx 67~{\rm K}$ the oscillations cease to be resolvable owing to the coexistence of the AF1 and AF2 phases, which leads to a broader range of internal magnetic fields. Using density functional calculations we identify a candidate muon stopping site within the unit cell, which dipole field simulations show to be consistent with the proposed magnetic structure. The possibility of incommensurate magnetic ordering is discussed for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=53~{\rm K}$ and 25~K for Sr$_{2}$YOsO$_6$ and Sr$_{2}$InOsO$_6$, respectively.

Simulation of muon radiography for monitoring CO$_2$ stored in a geological reservoir

Current methods of monitoring subsurface CO$_2$, such as repeat seismic surveys, are episodic and require highly skilled personnel to acquire the data. Simulations based on simplified models have previously shown that muon radiography could be automated to continuously monitor CO$_2$ injection and migration, in addition to reducing the overall cost of monitoring. In this paper, we present a simulation of the monitoring of CO$_2$ plume evolution in a geological reservoir using muon radiography. The stratigraphy in the vicinity of a nominal test facility is modelled using geological data, and a numerical fluid flow model is used to describe the time evolution of the CO$_2$ plume. A planar detection region with a surface area of 1000 m$^2$ is considered, at a vertical depth of 776 m below the seabed. We find that one year of constant CO$_2$ injection leads to changes in the column density of $\lesssim 1\%$, and that the CO$_2$ plume is already resolvable with an exposure time of less than 50 days.

Transverse field muon-spin rotation signature of the skyrmion lattice phase in Cu2OSeO3

We present the results of transverse field (TF) muon-spin rotation (muSR) measurements on Cu2OSeO3, which has a skyrmion lattice (SL) phase. We measure the response of the TF muSR signal in that phase along with the surrounding ones, and suggest how the phases might be distinguished using the results of these measurements. Dipole field simulations support the conclusion that the muon is sensitive to the SL via the TF lineshape and, based on this interpretation, our measurements suggest that the SL is quasistatic on a timescale tau > 100 ns.

The magneto-structural relationship in the tetrahedral spin chain oxide CsCoO$_2$

We have investigated the structural and magnetic transitions in CsCoO$_2$ using calorimetric measurements, neutron powder diffraction (NPD), density functional theory (DFT) calculations and muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. CsCoO$_2$ exhibits three-dimensional long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at 424~K, resulting in antiferromagnetic alignment of chains of ferromagnetically ordered Co-Co spin dimers. Although there is no change in magnetic structure around a structural transition at $T^{*}=100$~K, the resulting bifurcation of corner-shared Co--O--Co bond angles causes a weakening of the AFM interaction for one set of bonds along the chains. Consequently, the system undergoes a complex freezing out of relaxation processes on cooling.

The beta Phase of Multiferroic Bismuth Ferrite and its beta-gamma Metal-Insulator Transition

We show that epitaxial (001) thin films of multiferroic bismuth ferrite BiFeO3 are monoclinic at room temperature instead of tetragonal or Rhombohedral as reported earlier . We report a orthorhombic order-disorder beta-phase between 820C and 950C contrary to the earlier report. The transition sequence monoclinic-orthorhombic phase in (001)BiFeO3 thin film (rhombohedral-orthorhombic transition in single crystal) resembles that of BaTiO3 or PbSc1/2Ta1/2O3. The transition to the cubic $γ$-phase causes an abrupt collapse of the bandgap toward zero (insulator-metal transition) at the orthorhombic-cubic beta-gamma transition around 950C. This transition is similar to the metal-insulator transition in Ba0.6K0.4BiO3.
