Suppression of electronic correlations by chemical pressure from FeSe to FeS

Iron-based chalcogenides are complex superconducting systems in which orbitally-dependent electronic correlations play an important role. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the effect of these electronic correlations outside the nematic phase in the tetragonal phase of superconducting FeSe1-xSx (x = 0; 0:18; 1). With increasing sulfur substitution, the Fermi velocities increase significantly and the band renormalizations are suppressed towards a factor of 1.5-2 for FeS. Furthermore, the chemical pressure leads to an increase in the size of the quasi-two dimensional Fermi surface, compared with that of FeSe, however, it remains smaller than the predicted one from first principle calculations for FeS. Our results show that the isoelectronic substitution is an effective way to tune electronic correlations in FeSe1-xSx, being weakened for FeS with a lower superconducting transition temperature. This suggests indirectly that electronic correlations could help to promote higher-Tc superconductivity in FeSe.

Coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in separate layers of the iron-based superconductor Li_{1-x}Fe_{x}(OH)Fe_{1-y}Se

The magnetic properties attributed to the hydroxide layer of Li1-xFex(OH)Fe1-ySe have been elucidated by the study of superconducting and nonsuperconducting members of this family. Both ac magnetometry and muon spin relaxation measurements of nonsuperconductors find a magnetic state existing below approximately 10 K which exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization. This magnetic state is accompanied by a low-temperature heat capacity anomaly present in both superconducting and nonsuperconducting variants suggesting that the magnetism persists into the superconducting state. The estimated value of magnetic moment present within the hydroxide layer supports a picture of a glassy magnetic state, probably comprising clusters of iron ions of varying cluster sizes distributed within the lithium hydroxide layer.

Spin resonance in the superconducting state of Li$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$ODFe$_{1-y}$Se observed by neutron spectroscopy

We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a powder sample of the superconductor lithium iron selenide hydroxide Li$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$ODFe$_{1-y}$Se ($x \simeq 0.16, y \simeq 0.02$, $T_{\rm c} = 41$\,K). The spectrum shows an enhanced intensity below $T_{\rm c}$ over an energy range $0.64\times2Δ< E < 2Δ$, where $Δ$ is the superconducting gap, with maxima at the wave vectors $Q_1 \simeq 1.46$\,Å$^{-1}$ and $Q_2 \simeq 1.97$\,Å$^{-1}$. The behavior of this feature is consistent with the spin resonance mode found in other unconventional superconductors, and strongly resembles the spin resonance observed in the spectrum of the molecular-intercalated iron selenide, Li$_{0.6}$(ND$_{2}$)$_{0.2}$(ND$_{3}$)$_{0.8}$Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$. The signal can be described with a characteristic two-dimensional wave vector $(π, 0.67π)$ in the Brillouin zone of the iron square lattice, consistent with the nesting vector between electron Fermi sheets.

Robustness of superconductivity to structural disorder in Sr$_{0.3}$(NH$_2$)$_{y}$(NH$_3$)$_{1-y}$Fe$_2$Se$_2$

The superconducting properties of a recently discovered high $T_{\rm c}$ superconductor, Sr/ammonia-intercalated FeSe, have been measured using pulsed magnetic fields down to $4.\,\rm {K}$ and muon spin spectroscopy down to $1.5\,\rm K$. This compound exhibits intrinsic disorder resulting from random stacking of the FeSe layers along the $c$-axis that is not present in other intercalates of the same family. This arises because the coordination requirements of the intercalated Sr and ammonia moieties imply that the interlayer stacking (along $c$) involves a translation of either ${\bf a}/2$ or ${\bf b}/2$ which locally breaks tetragonal symmetry. The result of this stacking arrangement is that the Fe ions in this compound describe a body-centred tetragonal lattice in contrast to the primitive arrangement of Fe ions described in all other Fe-based superconductors. In pulsed magnetic fields the upper critical field $H_{\text{c2}}$ was found to increase on cooling with an upwards curvature that is commonly seen in type-II superconductors of a multi-band nature. Fitting the data to a two-band model and extrapolation to absolute zero gave a maximum upper critical field ${μ_0H_{\rm c2}(0)}$ of ${33(2)\,\rm T}$. A clear superconducting transition with a diamagnetic shift was also observed in transverse-field muon measurements at ${T_{\text c}\approx36.3(2)\,\rm K}$. These results demonstrate that robust superconductivity in these intercalated FeSe systems does not rely on perfect structural coherence along the $c$-axis.

Strong $(π,0)$ spin fluctuations in $β$-FeSe observed by neutron spectroscopy

We have performed powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the unconventional superconductor $β$-FeSe ($T_{\rm c} \simeq 8\,\mathrm{K}$). The spectra reveal highly dispersive paramagnetic fluctuations emerging from the square-lattice wave vector $(π,0)$ extending beyond 80 meV in energy. Measurements as a function of temperature at an energy of $\sim 13\,\mathrm{meV}$ did not show any variation from $T_{\rm c}$ to $104\,\mathrm{K}$. The results show that FeSe is close to an instability towards $(π,0)$ antiferromagnetism characteristic of the parent phases of the high-$T_{\rm c}$ iron arsenide superconductors, and that the iron paramagnetic moment is neither affected by the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal structural transition at $T_{\rm s} \simeq 90\,\mathrm{K}$ nor does it undergo a change in spin state over the temperature range studied.

The upper critical field of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As superconductors

The upper critical field of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As was measured from $x=0$ to $x=0.08$, with the magnetic field applied parallel ($H_{\rm c2}^\parallel$) and normal ($H_{\rm c2}^\perp$) to the planes. The data were fitted using one-band and two-band models. The orbital and paramagnetic components of the upper critical field were extracted for $H_{\rm c2}^\parallel$, which we find to to be strongly dominated by paramagnetic pair-breaking. In the parent compound the paramagnetic limit is equal to the value expected by BCS theory. However, substitution of Fe by Co leads to an enhancement above the BCS limit by a factor of approximately 1.6. In the over-doped region, we observe a significant convex curvature in $H_{\rm c2}^\perp$ at low temperatures, which we attribute to the two-band nature of the superconductivity and the asymmetry between the two bands. Additionally, we discuss the behavior of critical field anisotropy, coherence length $ξ$, and the penetration depth $λ$.

Absence of strong magnetic fluctuations in the iron phosphide superconductors LaFePO and Sr2ScO3FeP

We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements on polycrystalline LaFePO and Sr2ScO3FeP, two members of the iron phosphide families of superconductors. No evidence is found for any magnetic fluctuations in the spectrum of either material in the energy and wavevector ranges probed. Special attention is paid to the wavevector at which spin-density-wave-like fluctuations are seen in other iron-based superconductors. We estimate that the magnetic signal, if present, is at least a factor of four (Sr2ScO3FeP) or seven (LaFePO) smaller than in the related iron arsenide and chalcogenide superconductors. These results suggest that magnetic fluctuations are not as influential on the electronic properties of the iron phosphide systems as they are in other iron-based superconductors.

Magnetic fluctuations and spin freezing in nonsuperconducting LiFeAs derivatives

We present detailed magnetometry and muon-spin rotation data on polycrystalline samples of overdoped, non-superconducting LiFe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$As ($x = 0.1,\,0.2$) and Li$_{1-y}$Fe$_{1+y}$As ($0\leq y\leq 0.04$) as well as superconducting LiFeAs. While LiFe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$As exhibits weak antiferromagnetic fluctuations down to $1.5\,{\rm K}$, Li$_{1-y}$Fe$_{1+y}$As samples, which have a much smaller deviation from the $1:1:1$ stoichiometry, show a crossover from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic fluctuations on cooling and a freezing of dynamically fluctuating moments at low temperatures. We do not find any signatures of time-reversal symmetry breaking in stoichiometric LiFeAs that would support recent predictions of triplet pairing.

Spin fluctuations away from (pi,0) in the superconducting phase of molecular-intercalated FeSe

Magnetic fluctuations in the molecular-intercalated FeSe superconductor Li{x}(ND2){y}(ND3){1-y}Fe2Se2 (Tc = 43K) have been measured by inelastic neutron scattering from a powder sample. The strongest magnetic scattering is observed at a wave vector Q ~ 1.4 A^{-1}, which is not consistent with the (pi,0) nesting wave vector that characterizes magnetic fluctuations in several other iron-based superconductors, but is close to the (pi, pi/2) position found for A{x}Fe{2-y}Se2 systems. At the energies probed (~ 5kB Tc), the magnetic scattering increases in intensity with decreasing temperature below Tc, consistent with the superconductivity-induced magnetic resonance found in other iron-based superconductors.

The gradual destruction of magnetism in the superconducting family NaFe(1-x)CoxAs

The interplay and coexistence of superconducting, magnetic and structural order parameters in NaFe{1-x}Co{x}As has been studied using SQUID magnetometry, muon-spin rotation and synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. Substituting Fe by Co weakens the ordered magnetic state through both a suppression of T_N and a reduction in the size of the ordered moment. Upon further substitution of Fe by Co the high sensitivity of the muon as a local magnetic probe reveals a magnetically disordered phase, in which the size of the moment continues to decrease and falls to zero around the same point at which the magnetically-driven structural distortion is no longer resolvable. Both magnetism and the structural distortion are weakened as the robust superconducting state is established.

Spin fluctuations in LiFeAs observed by neutron scattering

We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements on the stoichiometric iron-based superconductor LiFeAs. We find evidence for (i) magnetic scattering consistent with strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and (ii) an increase in intensity in the superconducting state at low energies, similar to the resonant magnetic excitation observed in other iron-based superconductors. The results do not support a recent theoretical prediction of spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity in LiFeAs, and instead suggest that the mechanism of superconductivity is similar to that in the other iron-based superconductors.

Two-dimensional magnetism in the pnictide superconductor parent material SrFeAsF probed by muon-spin relaxation

We report muon-spin relaxation measurements on SrFeAsF, which is the parent compound of a newly discovered iron-arsenic-fluoride based series of superconducting materials. We find that this material has very similar magnetic properties to LaFeAsO, such as separated magnetic and structural transitions (TN = 120 K, Ts = 175 K), contrasting with SrFe2As2 where they are coincident. The muon oscillation frequencies fall away very sharply at TN, which suggests that the magnetic exchange between the layers is weaker than in comparable oxypnictide compounds. This is consistent with our specific heat measurements, which find that the entropy change S = 0.05 J/mol/K largely occurs at the structural transition and there is no anomaly at TN.

Heat capacity measurements on FeAs-based compounds: a thermodynamic probe of electronic and magnetic states

We report heat capacity measurements of the pnictide materials SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, NdFeAsO, LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and LiFeAs. For SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, with x close to 0.1, we use 3 He measurements to demonstrate a transfer of entropy from the peak at TN to a previously unidentified ~2 K feature which grows with increasing doping. Our results on the Sm samples are compared with a similarly doped La sample to elucidate the crystal field levels of the Sm3+ ion at 0, 23, and 56 meV which lead to a Schottky-like anomaly, and also show that there is a significant increase in the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ when La is replaced by Sm or Nd. The lattice contribution to the heat capacity of the superconducting oxypnictides is found to vary negligibly with chemical substitution. We also present a heat capacity measurement of LiFeAs showing the feature at Tc, which is significantly rounded and much smaller than the BCS value.

High energy spin excitations in BaFe2As2

We report neutron scattering measurements of cooperative spin excitations in antiferromagnetically ordered BaFe2As2, the parent phase of an iron pnictide superconductor. The data extend up to ~100meV and show that the spin excitation spectrum is sharp and highly dispersive. By fitting the spectrum to a linear spin-wave model we estimate the magnon bandwidth to be in the region of 0.17eV. The large characteristic spin fluctuation energy suggests that magnetism could play a role in the formation of the superconducting state.

Enhancement of Superfluid Stiffness, Suppression of Superconducting T_c and Field-induced Magnetism in the Pnictide Superconductor LiFeAs

Transverse-field muon-spin rotation measurements performed on two samples of LiFeAs demonstrate that the superfluid stiffness of the superconducting condensate in relation to its superconducting transition temperature is enhanced compared to other pnictide superconductors. Evidence is seen for a field-induced magnetic state in a sample with a significantly suppressed superconducting transition temperature. The results in this system highlight the role of direct Fe-Fe interactions in frustrating pairing mediated by antiferromagnetic fluctuations and suggest that, in common with other pnictide superconductors, the system is close to a magnetic instability.

Determination of characteristic muon precession and relaxation signals in FeAs and FeAs2, possible impurity phases in pnictide superconductors

We report muon-spin relaxation measurements of highly homogeneous samples of FeAs and FeAs2, both previously found as impurity phases in some samples of recently synthesized pnictide superconductors. We observe well defined muon precession in the FeAs sample with two precession frequencies of 38.2(3) and 22.7(9) MHz at 7.5 K, with the majority of the amplitude corresponding to the lower frequency component. In FeAs2 we confirm previous measurements showing that no long-ranged magnetic order occurs above 2 K and measure the muon spin relaxation rate, which increases on cooling. Our results exclude the possibility that previous muon-spin relaxation measurements of pnictide superconductors have been measuring the effect of these possible impurities.
