Type II success runs of Bernoulli trials separated by a gap

We treat success runs of independent identically distributed Bernoulli trials (with success parameter $p$) distributed according to the Type II binomial distribution of order $k$. However, the success runs are separated by a gap $g\ge1$ (a failure followed by $g-1$ arbitrary outcomes). Most of the literature treats the case $g=1$ only. Our main results are expressions for the probability mass function (we present two derivations) and the distribution of the longest success run. We also present more concise expressions for previously published results for the factorial moments. We present results for the mean, variance, probability mass function and factorial moments for $\textrm{NB}_{\rm II}(k,g,r)$, the Type II negative binomial distribution of order $k$, where the number of success runs $r$ is fixed and the number of trials $n$ is variable. Let $L$ denote the length of the longest success run. We present a recurrence and generating function for the distribution of $L$ and derive expressions for the mean, variance and factorial moments of $L$.

$2$-rotund norms for generalized Baernstein spaces and their duals

We consider a generalized Baernstein space associated to a compact family of finite subsets of an uncountable set. We show that for certain transfinitely defined families such spaces admit an equivalent $2$-rotund norm. We also show that for an arbitrary family the dual space admits an equivalent $2$-rotund norm.

Metric embeddings of Laakso graphs into Banach spaces

Let $X$ be Banach space which is not super-reflexive. Then, for each $n\ge1$ and $\varepsilon>0$, we exhibit metric embeddings of the Laakso graph $\mathcal{L}_n$ into $X$ with distortion less than $2+\varepsilon$ and into $L_1[0,1]$ with distortion $4/3$. The distortion of an embedding of $\mathcal{L}_2$ (respectively, the diamond graph $D_2$) into $L_1[0,1]$ is at least $9/8$ (respectively, $5/4$).

Nondentable Sets in Banach Spaces

In his study of the Radon Nikodým property of Banach spaces, Bourgain showed (among other things) that in any closed, bounded, convex set $A$ that is nondentable, one can find a separated, weakly closed bush. In this note, we prove a generalization of Bourgain's result: in any bounded, nondentable set $A$ (not necessarily closed or convex) one can find a separated, weakly closed approximate bush. Similarly, we obtain as corollaries the existence of $A$-valued quasimartingales with sharply divergent behavior.

The weighted Property (A) and the greedy algorithm

We investigate various aspects of the "weighted" greedy algorithm with respect to a Schauder basis. For a weight w, we describe w-greedy, w-almost-greedy and w-partially-greedy bases, and show some properties of w-semi-greedy bases. To achieve these goals, we introduce and study the w-Property (A).

Characterizations of almost greedy and partially greedy bases

We shall present new characterizations of partially greedy and almost greedy bases. A new class of basis (which we call reverse partially greedy basis) arises naturally from these characterizations of partially greedy bases. We also give characterizations for $1$-partially greedy and $1$-reverse partially greedy bases.

Existence and uniqueness of greedy bases in Banach spaces

Our aim is to investigate the properties of existence and uniqueness of greedy bases in Banach spaces. We show the non-existence of greedy basis in some Nakano spaces and Orlicz sequence spaces and produce the first-known examples of non-trivial spaces (i.e., different from $c_0$, $\ell_1$, and $\ell_2$) with a unique greedy basis.

On an isomorphic Banach-Mazur rotation problem and maximal norms in Banach spaces

We prove that the spaces $\ell_p$, $1<p<\infty, p\ne 2$, and all infinite-dimensional subspaces of their quotient spaces do not admit equivalent almost transitive renormings. This is a step towards the solution of the Banach-Mazur rotation problem, which asks whether a separable Banach space with a transitive norm has to be isometric or isomorphic to a Hilbert space. We obtain this as a consequence of a new property of almost transitive spaces with a Schauder basis, namely we prove that in such spaces the unit vector basis of $\ell_2^2$ belongs to the two-dimensional asymptotic structure and we obtain some information about the asymptotic structure in higher dimensions. Further, we prove that the spaces $\ell_p$, $1<p<\infty$, $p\ne 2$, have continuum different renormings with 1-unconditional bases each with a different maximal isometry group, and that every symmetric space other than $\ell_2$ has at least a countable number of such renormings. On the other hand we show that the spaces $\ell_p$, $1<p<\infty$, $p\ne 2$, have continuum different renormings each with an isometry group which is not contained in any maximal bounded subgroup of the group of isomorphisms of $\ell_p$.

The transfer of property $(β)$ of Rolewicz by a uniform quotient map

We provide a Laakso construction to prove that the property of having an equivalent norm with the property $(β)$ of Rolewicz is qualitatively preserved via surjective uniform quotient mappings between separable Banach spaces. On the other hand, we show that the $(β)$-modulus is not quantitatively preserved via such a map by exhibiting two uniformly homeomorphic Banach spaces that do not have $(β)$-moduli of the same power-type even under renorming.

Renorming spaces with greedy bases

We study the problem of improving the greedy constant or the democracy constant of a basis of a Banach space by renorming. We prove that every Banach space with a greedy basis can be renormed, for a given $\vare>0$, so that the basis becomes $(1+\vare)$-democratic, and hence $(2+\vare)$-greedy, with respect to the new norm. If in addition the basis is bidemocratic, then there is a renorming so that in the new norm the basis is $(1+\vare)$-greedy. We also prove that in the latter result the additional assumption of the basis being bidemocratic can be removed for a large class of bases. Applications include the Haar systems in $L_p[0,1]$, $1<p<\infty$, and in dyadic Hardy space $H_1$, as well as the unit vector basis of Tsirelson space.

Asymptotic geometry of Banach spaces and uniform quotient maps

Recently, Lima and Randrianarivony pointed out the role of the property $(β)$ of Rolewicz in nonlinear quotient problems, and answered a ten-year-old question of Bates, Johnson, Lindenstrauss, Preiss and Schechtman. In the present paper, we prove that the modulus of asymptotic uniform smoothness of the range space of a uniform quotient map can be compared with the modulus of $(β)$ of the domain space. We also provide conditions under which this comparison can be improved.

Explicit constructions of RIP matrices and related problems

We give a new explicit construction of $n\times N$ matrices satisfying the Restricted Isometry Property (RIP). Namely, for some c>0, large N and any n satisfying N^{1-c} < n < N, we construct RIP matrices of order k^{1/2+c}. This overcomes the natural barrier k=O(n^{1/2}) for proofs based on small coherence, which are used in all previous explicit constructions of RIP matrices. Key ingredients in our proof are new estimates for sumsets in product sets and for exponential sums with the products of sets possessing special additive structure. We also give a construction of sets of n complex numbers whose k-th moments are uniformly small for 1\le k\le N (Turan's power sum problem), which improves upon known explicit constructions when (\log N)^{1+o(1)} \le n\le (\log N)^{4+o(1)}. This latter construction produces elementary explicit examples of n by N matrices that satisfy RIP and whose columns constitute a new spherical code; for those problems the parameters closely match those of existing constructions in the range (\log N)^{1+o(1)} \le n\le (\log N)^{5/2+o(1)}.

Greedy bases for Besov spaces

We prove thatthe Banach space $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty \ell_p^n)_{\ell_q}$, which is isomorphic to certain Besov spaces, has a greedy basis whenever $1\leq p \leq\infty$ and $1<q<\infty$. Furthermore, the Banach spaces $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty \ell_p^n)_{\ell_1}$, with $1<p\le \infty$, and $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty \ell_p^n)_{c_0}$, with $1\le p<\infty$ do not have a greedy bases. We prove as well that the space $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty \ell_p^n)_{\ell_q}$ has a 1-greedy basis if and only if $1\leq p=q\le \infty$.

On the convergence of greedy algorithms for initial segments of the Haar basis

We consider the $X$-Greedy Algorithm and the Dual Greedy Algorithm in a finite-dimensional Banach space with a strictly monotone basis as the dictionary. We show that when the dictionary is an initial segment of the Haar basis in $L_p[0,1]$ ($1 < p < \infty$) then the algorithms terminate after finitely many iterations and that the number of iterations is bounded by a function of the length of the initial segment. We also prove a more general result for a class of strictly monotone bases.

Coefficient Quantization for Frames in Banach Spaces

Let $(e_i)$ be a fundamental system of a Banach space. We consider the problem of approximating linear combinations of elements of this system by linear combinations using quantized coefficients. We will concentrate on systems which are possibly redundant. Our model for this situation will be frames in Banach spaces.
