Local Structure of the Superconductor K0.8Fe1.6+xSe2: Evidence of Large Structural Disorder

The local structure of superconducting single crystals of K0.8Fe1.6+xSe2 with Tc = 32.6 K was studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Near-edge spectra reveal that the average valence of Fe is 2+. The room temperature structure about the Fe, K and Se sites was examined by iron, selenium and potassium K-edge measurements. The structure about the Se and Fe sites shows a high degree of order in the nearest neighbor Fe-Se bonds. On the other hand, the combined Se and K local structure measurements reveal a very high level of structural disorder in the K layers. Temperature dependent measurements at the Fe sites show that the Fe-Se atomic correlation follows that of the Fe-As correlation in the superconductor LaFeAsO0.89F0.11 - having the same effective Einstein temperature (stiffness). In K0.8Fe1.6+xSe2, the nearest neighbor Fe-Fe bonds has a lower Einstein temperature and higher structural disorder than in LaFeAsO0.89F0.11. The moderate Fe site and high K site structural disorder is consistent with the high normal state resistivity seen in this class of materials. For higher shells, an enhancement of the second nearest neighbor Fe-Fe interaction is found just below Tc and suggests that correlations between Fe magnetic ion pairs beyond the first neighbor are important in models of magnetic order and superconductivity in these materials.

Coherent Collective Excitations in a Superfluid: Spontaneously Broken Symmetries and Fluctuations-Dissipation

This paper presents an elementary theory of the phase-coherent collective excitations in both He II in the gravitational field and atomic Bose-Einstein condensation in a trap. The theory is based on the concept of off-diagonal long-range order by Penrose and Onsager and the quantum theory of Bohm, with emphasis on the broken symmetry in a Bose-Einstein gas with repulsive interactions. It is shown that a spontaneously broken symmetry that accompanies a phonon (Nambu-Goldstone mode) takes place at the surface layer of an inhomogeneous Bose system in the presence of an external field. The spontaneously broken symmetry in a Bose system is described and is shown to manifest itself in both He II and the Bose-Einstein condensation - a shell-like structure of Bose-Einstein condensation in a trap. The broken symmetry gives a coherent explanation for a number of long standing puzzles in He II.

Analytical and Experimental Study of X-ray Absorption Coefficients of Material by Abel's Inversion

The hard x-ray gamma-ray absorption by cylindrically symmetric U-238 test objects is studied by means of gamma-ray transmission measurements. To make a precise comparison between the theoretically modelled values and the absorption coefficients calculated from the experimental data, we have developed a highly accurate numerical code based on a new solution of Abel's integral equation. It is shown that progressive filtering, surface reflections by Compton scattering, and the enhanced backscattering due to impurities can explain much of the observed discrepancy. We also discuss optimal experimental conditions with regard to the feasibility of quantitative radiography for gamma-ray diagnostics.

Stability of a Charged Particle Beam in a Resistive Plasma Channel

A self-focusing of a coasting relativistic beam in a plasma channel that is confined by an external magnetic field is studied as a means of reconditioning the beam emerging from a beam injector [a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ)] for a linac. A detailed study of the beam stability in the self-focused beam has been carried out. In order to explain beam filaments and the resistive hose instability in a unified way, we treat all the azimuthal modes in the derivation of the dispersion relation in a finite plasma channel that exhibit many unstable modes, which are classified by Weinberg's scheme [Steven Weinberg, J. Math. 8, 614 (1967)].

Atomic Theory of Collective Excitations in Bose-Einstein Condensation and Spontaneously Broken Gauge Symmetry

A theory of collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensation in a trap is developed based on the quantum Hamilton-Jacobi equation of Bohm and the phase coherence along with the idea of off-diagonal long range order of Penrose and Onsager. First, we show that a free surface behaves like a normal fluid - a breakdown of superfluidity. Second, inside the free surface it is shown that the spectrum of phonons is of the form $ω=ck$ scaled with the external potential, where the speed of (first) sound, $c=[4πaρ\hbar^{2}]^{1/2}/M$ and $k$ is the wave number. Third, in the limit $a\to 0$, the hard spheres in the Bose-Einstein condensation collapse to a close-packed classical lattice with the zero-point vibrational motion about fixed points.

Atomic Theory of the Two-fluid Model: Broken Gauge Symmetry in Bose-Einstein condensation

We discuss the collective excitations in a spatially inhomogeneous (cylindrically symmetric) Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at low temperature ($T \ll T_λ$). The main result is the dispersion relation for a (first) sound wave that is obtained by describing the perturbation as a Lagrangian coordinate. The dispersion curve is in good agreement with the Bogoliubov phonon spectrum $ω=c k$, where $k=k_θ=m/r$, the wave number and $c=[4 πa ρ\hbar^{2}]^{1/2}/M$, the speed of first sound. Based on Bohm's quantum theory, a spontaneously broken gauge symmetry in a quantum fluid is discussed in terms of the quantum fluctuation-dissipation, from which it is shown that the symmetry breaking takes place at the free surface of BEC in an external field.

Quantum Hamilton-Jacobi Equation and Broken Symmetry in Hydrodynamics of Liquid Helium II

Based on the quantum theory of Bohm and the phase coherence along with the mean field of Penrose and Onsager, it is shown that a free surface of He II behaves like a classical fluid. The broken symmetry of a macroscopic Bose system at the free surface in an external field is discussed in terms of the quantum fluctuations-dissipation. First, we apply this peculiarly universal behavior to explain a breakdown of superfluidity at a vortex core. Secondly, we resolve a long standing puzzle with Landau's two-fluid model on a free surface of a rotating He II in a gravitational field.
