Characterization of the background spectrum in DAMIC at SNOLAB

We construct the first comprehensive radioactive background model for a dark matter search with charge-coupled devices (CCDs). We leverage the well-characterized depth and energy resolution of the DAMIC at SNOLAB detector and a detailed GEANT4-based particle-transport simulation to model both bulk and surface backgrounds from natural radioactivity down to 50 eV$_{\text{ee}}$. We fit to the energy and depth distributions of the observed ionization events to differentiate and constrain possible background sources, for example, bulk $^{3}$H from silicon cosmogenic activation and surface $^{210}$Pb from radon plate-out. We observe the bulk background rate of the DAMIC at SNOLAB CCDs to be as low as $3.1 \pm 0.6$ counts kg$^{-1}$ day$^{-1}$ keV$_{\text{ee}}^{-1}$, making it the most sensitive silicon dark matter detector. Finally, we discuss the properties of a statistically significant excess of events over the background model with energies below 200 eV$_{\text{ee}}$.

Measurement of the bulk radioactive contamination of detector-grade silicon with DAMIC at SNOLAB

We present measurements of bulk radiocontaminants in the high-resistivity silicon CCDs from the DAMIC at SNOLAB experiment. We utilize the exquisite spatial resolution of CCDs to discriminate between $α$ and $β$ decays, and to search with high efficiency for the spatially-correlated decays of various radioisotope sequences. Using spatially-correlated $β$ decays, we measure a bulk radioactive contamination of $^{32}$Si in the CCDs of $140 \pm 30$ $μ$Bq/kg, and place an upper limit on bulk $^{210}$Pb of $< 160~μ$Bq/kg. Using similar analyses of spatially-correlated bulk $α$ decays, we set limits of $< 11$ $μ$Bq/kg (0.9 ppt) on $^{238}$U and of $< 7.3$ $μ$Bq/kg (1.8 ppt) on $^{232}$Th. The ability of DAMIC CCDs to identify and reject spatially-coincident backgrounds, particularly from $^{32}$Si, has significant implications for the next generation of silicon-based dark matter experiments, where $β$'s from $^{32}$Si decay will likely be a dominant background. This capability demonstrates the readiness of the CCD technology to achieve kg-scale dark matter sensitivity.

Results on Low-Mass Weakly Interacting Massive Particles from an 11 kg-day Target Exposure of DAMIC at SNOLAB

We present constraints on the existence of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) from an 11 kg-day target exposure of the DAMIC experiment at the SNOLAB underground laboratory. The observed energy spectrum and spatial distribution of ionization events with electron-equivalent energies $>$200 eV$_{\rm ee}$ in the DAMIC CCDs are consistent with backgrounds from natural radioactivity. An excess of ionization events is observed above the analysis threshold of 50 eV$_{\rm ee}$. While the origin of this low-energy excess requires further investigation, our data exclude spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross sections $σ_{χ-n}$ as low as $3\times 10^{-41}$ cm$^2$ for WIMPs with masses $m_χ$ from 7 to 10 GeV$c^{-2}$ . These results are the strongest constraints from a silicon target on the existence of WIMPs with $m_χ$$<$9 GeV$c^{-2}$ and are directly relevant to any dark matter interpretation of the excess of nuclear-recoil events observed by the CDMS silicon experiment in 2013.

Constraints on Light Dark Matter Particles Interacting with Electrons from DAMIC at SNOLAB

We report direct-detection constraints on light dark matter particles interacting with electrons. The results are based on a method that exploits the extremely low levels of leakage current of the DAMIC detector at SNOLAB of 2-6$\times$10$^{-22}$ A cm$^{-2}$. We evaluate the charge distribution of pixels that collect $<10~\rm{e^-}$ for contributions beyond the leakage current that may be attributed to dark matter interactions. Constraints are placed on so-far unexplored parameter space for dark matter masses between 0.6 and 100 MeV$c^{-2}$. We also present new constraints on hidden-photon dark matter with masses in the range $1.2$-$30$ eV$c^{-2}$.

Search for solar axions with CsI(Tl) crystal detectors

The results of a search for solar axions from the Korea Invisible Mass Search (KIMS) experiment at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory are presented. Low-energy electron-recoil events would be produced by conversion of solar axions into electrons via the axio-electric effect in CsI(Tl) crystals. Using data from an exposure of 34,596 $\rm kg \cdot days$, we set a 90 \% confidence level upper limit on the axion-electron coupling, $g_{ae}$, of $1.39 \times 10^{-11}$ for an axion mass less than 1 keV/$\rm c^2$. This limit is lower than the indirect solar neutrino bound, and fully excludes QCD axions heavier than 0.48 eV/$\rm c^2$ and 140.9 eV/$\rm c^2$ for the DFSZ and KSVZ models respectively.

Current-induced asymmetric magnetoresistance due to energy transfer via quantum spin-flip process

Current-induced magnetization excitation is a core phenomenon for next-generation magnetic nanodevices, and has been attributed to the spin-transfer torque (STT) that originates from the transfer of the spin angular momentum between a conduction electron and a local magnetic moment through the exchange coupling. However, the same coupling can transfer not only spin but also energy, though the latter transfer mechanism has been largely ignored. Here we report on experimental evidence concerning the energy transfer in ferromagnet/heavy metal bilayers. The magnetoresistance (MR) is found to depend significantly on the current direction down to low in-plane currents, for which STT cannot play any significant role. Instead we find that the observed MR is consistent with the energy transfer mechanism through the quantum spin-flip process, which predicts short wavelength, current-direction-dependent magnon excitations in the THz frequency range. Our results unveil another aspect of current-induced magnetic excitation, and open a channel for the dc-current-induced generation of THz magnons.

A CaMoO4 Crystal Low Temperature Detector for the AMoRE Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Search

We report the development of a CaMoO4 crystal low temperature detector for the AMoRE neutrinoless double beta decay (0ν\b{eta}\b{eta}) search experiment. The prototype detector cell was composed of a 216 g CaMoO4 crystal and a metallic magnetic calorimeter. An over-ground measurement demonstrated FWHM resolution of 6-11 keV for full absorption gamma peaks. Pulse shape discrimination was clearly demonstrated in the phonon signals, and 7.6 σ of discrimination power was found for the α and \b{eta}/γ separation. The phonon signals showed rise-times of about 1 ms. It is expected that the relatively fast rise-time will increase the rejection efficiency of two-neutrino double beta decay pile-up events which can be one of the major background sources in 0ν\b{eta}\b{eta} searches.

Measurement of the quenching and channeling effects in a CsI crystal used for a WIMP search

We have studied channeling effects in a Cesium Iodide (CsI) crystal that is similar in composition to the ones being used in a search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) dark matter candidates, and measured its energy-dependent quenching factor, the relative scintillation yield for electron and nuclear recoils. The experimental results are reproduced with a GEANT4 simulation that includes a model of the scintillation efficiency as a function of electronic stopping power. We present the measured and simulated quenching factors and the estimated effects of channeling.

Search for Low-Mass Dark Matter with CsI(Tl) Crystal Detectors

We present a search for low-mass ($\leq 20 GeV/c^{2}$) weakly interacting massive particles(WIMPs), strong candidates of dark matter particles, using the low-background CsI(Tl) detector array of the Korea Invisible Mass Search (KIMS) experiment. With a total data exposure of 24,324.3kg$\cdot$days,we search for WIMP interaction signals produced by nuclei recoiling from WIMP-nuclear elastic scattering with visible energies between 2 and 4keV. The observed energy distribution of candidate events is consistent with null signals, and upper limits of the WIMP-proton spin-independent interaction are set with a 90% confidence level. The observed limit rejects most of the low mass region of parameter space favored by the DAMA annual modulation signal.

Thermal Model and Optimization of a Large Crystal Detector using a Metallic Magnetic Calorimeter

We established a simple thermal model of the heat flow in a large crystal detector designed for a neutrinoless double beta decay experiment. The detector is composed of a CaMoO$_{4}$ crystal and a metallic magnetic calorimeter (MMC). The thermal connection between the absorber and the sensor consists of a gold film evaporated on the crystal surface and gold bonding wires attached to this film and the MMC sensor. The model describes athermal and thermal processes of heat flow to the gold film. A successive experiment based on optimization calculations of the area and thickness of the gold film showed a significant improvement in the size and rise-time of the measured signals.

Holographic k-string Tensions in Higher Representations and Luescher Term Universality

We investigate a holographic description of k-strings in higher representations via D5 branes with worldvolume fluxes. The D-brane configurations are embedded in supergravity backgrounds dual to confining field theories in 3 and 4 dimensions. We compute the tensions and find qualitative agreement for the totally symmetric and totally anti-symmetric representations with the results of other methods such as lattice as well as the Hamiltonian approach of Karabali and Nair. A one-loop computation on the D-brane configurations yields the Luescher term and allows us to confirm a previously proposed universal expression following from holography.

Neutron Skin size dependence of the nuclear binding energy

The nuclear binding energy is studied using a finite temperature density functional theory. A Skyrme interaction is used in this work. Volume, surface, and symmetry energy contributions to the binding energy are investigated. The case of neutron skin is considered in detail. The neutron skin modifies the mass $A$ dependence of various terms and $I$ dependence of the skin thickness is proportional to $I$ for the case of same central density.

Low energy fast events from radon progenies at the surface of a CsI(Tl) scintillator

In searches for rare phenomena such as elastic scattering of dark matter particles or neutrinoless double beta decay, alpha decays of Rn222 progenies attached to the surfaces of the detection material have been identified as a serious source of background. In measurements with CsI(Tl) scintillator crystals, we demonstrate that alpha decays of surface contaminants produce fast signals with a characteristic mean-time distribution that is distinct from those of neutron- and gamma-induced events.

Jet Substructure at the Tevatron and LHC: New results, new tools, new benchmarks

In this report we review recent theoretical progress and the latest experimental results in jet substructure from the Tevatron and the LHC. We review the status of and outlook for calculation and simulation tools for studying jet substructure. Following up on the report of the Boost 2010 workshop, we present a new set of benchmark comparisons of substructure techniques, focusing on the set of variables and grooming methods that are collectively known as "top taggers". To facilitate further exploration, we have attempted to collect, harmonise, and publish software implementations of these techniques.

New Limits on Interactions between Weakly Interacting Massive Particles and Nucleons Obtained with CsI(Tl) Crystal Detectors

New limits are presented on the cross section for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) nucleon scattering in the KIMS CsI(T) detector array at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The exposure used for these results is 24524.3 kg\cdotdays. Nuclei recoiling from WIMP interactions are identified by a pulse shape discrimination method. A low energy background due to alpha emitters on the crystal surfaces is identified and taken into account in the analysis. The detected numbers of nuclear recoils are consistent with zero and 90% confidence level upper limits on the WIMP interaction rates are set for electron equivalent energies from 3 keV to 11 keV. The 90% upper limit of NR event rate for 3.6-5.8 keV corresponding to 2-4 keV in NaI(T) is 0.0098 counts/kg/keV/day which is below the annual modulation amplitude reported by DAMA. This is incompatible with interpretations that enhance the modulation amplitude such as inelastic dark matter models. We establish the most stringent cross section limits on spin-dependent WIMP-proton elastic scattering for the WIMP masses greater than 20 GeV/c2.
