Generalized Ray Tracing for Axions in Astrophysical Plasmas

Ray tracing plays a vital role in black hole imaging, modeling the emission mechanisms of pulsars, and deriving signatures from physics beyond the Standard Model. In this work we focus on one specific application of ray tracing, namely, predicting radio signals generated from the resonant conversion of axion dark matter in the strongly magnetized plasma surrounding neutron stars. The production and propagation of low-energy photons in these environments are sensitive to both the anisotropic response of the background plasma and curved spacetime; here, we employ a fully covariant framework capable of treating both effects. We implement this both via forward and backward ray tracing. In forward ray tracing, photons are sampled at the point of emission and propagated to infinity, whilst in the backward-tracing approach, photons are traced backwards from an image plane to the point of production. We explore various approximations adopted in prior work, quantifying the importance of gravity, plasma anisotropy, the neutron star mass and radius, and imposing the proper kinematic matching of the resonance. Finally, using a more realistic model for the charge distribution of magnetar magnetospheres, we revisit the sensitivity of current and future radio and sub-mm telescopes to spectral lines emanating from the Galactic Center Magnetar, showing such observations may extend sensitivity to axion masses $m_a \sim \mathcal{O}({\rm few}) \times 10^{-3}$ eV, potentially even probing parameter space of the QCD axion.

Detecting the Stimulated Decay of Axions at Radio Frequencies

Assuming axion-like particles account for the entirety of the dark matter in the Universe, we study the possibility of detecting their decay into photons at radio frequencies. We discuss different astrophysical targets, such as dwarf spheroidal galaxies, the Galactic Center and halo, and galaxy clusters. The presence of an ambient radiation field leads to a stimulated enhancement of the decay rate; depending on the environment and the mass of the axion, the effect of stimulated emission may amplify the photon flux by serval orders of magnitude. For axion-photon couplings allowed by astrophysical and laboratory constraints(and possibly favored by stellar cooling), we find the signal to be within the reach of next-generation radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometer Array.

Pairing in high-density neutron matter including short- and long-range correlations

The influence of short-range correlations (SRC) on the spectral distribution of neutrons is incorporated in the solution of the gap equation for the ${}^3P_2-{}^3F_2$ coupled channel in pure neutron matter at high density. This effect is studied for three different realistic interactions. The gap in this channel is strongly suppressed by these correlations but does not vanish. For a consistent treatment we also include for the first time the effect of long-range correlations (LRC) by incorporating polarization terms in addition to the bare interaction. This allows the neutrons to exchange density and spin fluctuations governed by the strength of Landau parameters with values that are consistent with the available literature. While these LRC have an antiscreening tendency, they only slightly increase the gap in the ${}^3P_2-{}^3F_2$ coupled channel for all three realistic interactions as long as SRC are included. All three interactions generate maximum gaps around 0.1 to 0.2 MeV at most with a small dependence on the hardness of the interaction. These results are relevant for the cooling scenarios of neutron stars, in particular the young neutron star in Cassiopeia A.

Pairing in bulk nuclear matter beyond BCS

The influence of short-range correlations on the spectral distribution of neutrons is incorporated in the solution of the gap equation for the ${}^3P_2-{}^3F_2$ coupled channel in pure neutron matter. This effect is studied for different realistic interactions including one based on chiral perturbation theory. The gap in this channel vanishes at all relevant densities due to the treatment of these correlations. We also consider the effect of long-range correlations by including polarization terms in addition to the bare interaction which allow the neutrons to exchange density and spin fluctuations governed by the strength of Landau parameters allowed to have reasonable values consistent with the available literature. Preliminary results indicate that reasonable values of these parameters do not generate a gap in the ${}^3P_2-{}^3F_2$ coupled channel either for all three realistic interactions although the pairing interaction becomes slightly more attractive.
