Threshold Corrections in QED otimes QCD at the LHC

In some processes at the LHC, theoretical precisions of 1 percent are desired. With an eye toward such precisions, we introduce the theory of the simultaneous YFS resummation of QED and QCD to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC. Our results, that the soft QED threshold effects are at the level of 0.3 percent whereas the soft QCD threshold effects enter at the level of 20 percent, show that both must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such precision goals.

The Virtual Correction to Bremsstrahlung in High-Energy e+ e- Annihilation: Comparison of Exact Results

We have compared the virtual corrections to single hard bremsstrahlung as calculated by S. Jadach, M. Melles, B.F.L. Ward and S.A. Yost to several other expressions. The most recent of these comparisons is to the leptonic tensor calculated by J.H. Kuhn and G. Rodrigo for radiative return. Agreement is found to within a part in 10^5 or better, as a fraction of the Born cross section, for most of the range of photon energies. The massless limits have been shown to agree analytically to NLL order.

Comparison of Exact Results for the Virtual Corrections to Bremsstrahlung in Electron-Positron Annihilation at High Energies

We have compared the virtual corrections to electron-positron annihilation to fermion pairs with single hard bremsstrahlung as calculated by S. Jadach, M. Melles, B.F.L. Ward and S.A. Yost to several other expressions. The most recent of these comparisons is to the leptonic tensor calculated by J.H. Kuhn and G. Rodrigo for radiative return. Agreement is found to within $10^{-5}$ or better, as a fraction of the Born cross section.

QED \otimes QCD Threshold Corrections at the LHC

We use the theory of YFS resummation to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC, where accuracies of 1 percent are desired in some processes. We find that the soft QED threshold effects are at the level of 0.3 percent whereas the soft QCD threshold effects enter at the level of 20 percent and hence both must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such goals.

Comparisons of Fully Differential Exact Results for O(alpha) Virtual Corrections to Single Hard Bremsstrahlung in e+e- Annihilation at High Energies

We present comparisons of the fully differential exact virtual correction to the important single hard bremsstrahlung process in e+e- annihilation at high energies, which is essential for precision studies of the Standard Model from 1 GeV to 1 TeV, as calculated by two completely independent methods and groups. We show that the two sets of results are in excellent agreement. Phenomenological implications are discussed.

Comparisons of the Monte Carlo programs HORACE and WINHAC for single-W-boson production at hadron colliders

We present the comparisons of two independent Monte Carlo event generators, HORACE and WINHAC, for single-W-boson production in hadronic collisions with multiphoton effects in leptonic W decays. These comparisons were performed first at the parton level with fixed quark-beams energy, and then at the hadron level for proton-proton collisions at the LHC. In general, a good agreement between the two programs has been found. Possible sources of differences in some of the presented results are discussed. We also present and discuss the effects of including non-zero quark masses for the main single-W-boson observables at the LHC.

Exact solutions of the QCD evolution equations using Monte Carlo method

We present the exact and precise (~0.1%) numerical solution of the QCD evolution equations for the parton distributions in a wide range of $Q$ and $x$ using Monte Carlo (MC) method, which relies on the so-called Markovian algorithm. We point out certain advantages of such a method with respect to the existing non-MC methods. We also formulate a challenge of constructing non-Markovian MC algorithm for the evolution equations for the initial state QCD radiation with tagging the type and $x$ of the exiting parton. This seems to be within the reach of the presently available computer CPUs and the sophistication of the MC techniques.

Theoretical error of luminosity cross section at LEP

The aim of this note is to characterize briefly main components of theoretical error of the small angle Bhabha measurement at LEP and to discuss critically how solid these estimates really are, from todays perspective. We conclude that the existing theoretical error of the LEP luminometer process (small angle Bhabha) is rather solid, and we add some new discussion concerning the remaining uncertainties and prospects of the future improvements toward the $\le 0.025%$ precision.

Multiphoton Radiation in Leptonic W-Boson Decays

We present the calculation of multiphoton radiation effects in leptonic W-boson decays in the framework of the Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exclusive exponentiation. This calculation is implemented in the Monte Carlo event generator WINHAC for single W-boson production in hadronic collisions at the parton level. Some numerical results obtained with the help of this program are also presented.

Measuring the FSR--inclusive pi+pi- cross section

Final state radiation (FSR) in pion--pair production cannot be calculated reliably because of the composite structure of the pions. However, FSR corrections have to be taken into account for a precise evaluation of the hadronic contribution to g-2 of the muon. The role of FSR in both energy scan and radiative return experiments is discussed. It is shown how FSR influences the pion form factor extraction from experimental data and, as a consequence, the evaluation of a_mu^had. In fact the O(alpha) FSR corrections should be included to reach the precision we are aiming at. We argue that for an extraction of the desired FSR--inclusive cross section sigma^(gamma)_had a photon--inclusive scan measurement of the ``e+e- to pi+pi- + photons'' cross section is needed. For exclusive scan and radiative return measurements in contrast we have to rely on ad hoc FSR models if we want to obtain either sigma^(gamma)_had or the FSR--exclusive cross section sigma^(0)_had. We thus advocate to consider seriously precise photon--inclusive energy scan measurements at present and future low energy e+e- facilities. Then together with radiative return measurements from DAFNE and BABAR and forthcoming scan measurements at VEPP-2000 we have a good chance to substantially improve the evaluation of a_mu^had in the future.

Comparison of SANC with KORALZ and PHOTOS

Using the SANC system we study the one-loop electroweak standard model prediction, including virtual and real photon emissions, for the decays of on-shell vector and scalar bosons B --> f anti-f (gamma), where B is a vector boson, Z or W, or a Standard Model Higgs. The complete one-loop corrections and exact photon emission matrix element are taken into account. For the phase-space integration, the Monte Carlo technique is used. For Z decay the QED part of the calculation is first cross-checked with the exact one-loop QED prediction of KORALZ. For Higgs boson and W decays, a comparison is made with the approximate QED calculation of PHOTOS Monte Carlo. This provides a useful element for the evaluation of the theoretical uncertainty of PHOTOS, very interesting for its application in ongoing LEP2 and future LC and LHC phenomenology.

Precision calculation for e+ e- -> 2f: the KK MC project

We present the current status of the coherent exclusive (CEEX) realization of the YFS theory for the processes in e+ e- -> 2f via the KK MC. We give a brief summary of the CEEX theory in comparison to the older (EEX) exclusive exponentiation theory and illustrate recent theoretical results relevant to the LEP2 and LC physics programs.

QCD soft gluon exponentiation: YFS MC Approach

We develop and prove the theory of the QCD extension of the YFS Monte Carlo approach to higher order QED radiative corrections. As a corollary, a new approach to quantum gravity by one of us (B.F.L.W.) is illustrated. Semi-analytical results and preliminary explicit Monte Carlo data are presented for the processes p-bar p -> t-bar t + X at FNAL energies. We comment briefly on the implications of our results on the CDF/D0 observations and on RHIC/LHC physics.

Foam: A General purpose Monte Carlo Cellular Algorithm

A general-purpose, self-adapting Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm implemented in the program {\tt Foam} is described. The high efficiency of the MC, that is small maximum weight or variance of the MC weight is achieved by means of dividing the integration domain into small cells. The cells can be $n$-dimensional simplices, hyperrectangles or a Cartesian product of them. The grid of cells, ``foam'', is produced in the process of the binary split of the cells. The next cell to be divided and the position/direction of the division hyperplane is chosen by the algorithm which optimizes the ratio of the maximum weight to the average weight or (optionally) the total variance. The algorithm is able to deal, in principle, with an arbitrary pattern of the singularities in the distribution.

Precision W-pair physics with the YFSWW3 and KoralW Monte Carlos

We present the recent developments in the precision studies of W-pair and single-W processes in e+e- collisions achieved with the help of the KoralW and YFSWW3 Monte Carlo generators. We focus on the theoretical precision of the measurements of M_W and anomalous couplings on the example of lambda coupling. We present the mechanism of running these two independent codes in the form of one Concurrent Monte Carlo code. We describe also the extensions of KoralW necessary to emulate the kinematical region of single-W process.

Electric Charge Screening Effect in Single-W Production with the KoralW Monte Carlo

Any Monte Carlo event generator in which only initial state radiation (ISR) is implemented, or ISR is simulated independently of the final state radiation (FSR), may feature too many photons with large transverse momenta, which deform the topology of events and result in too strong an overall energy loss due to ISR. This overproduction of ISR photons happens in the presence of the final state particle close to the beam particle of the same electric charge. It is often said that the lack of the electric charge screening effect between ISR and FSR is responsible for the above pathology in ISR. We present an elegant approximate method of curing the above problem, without actually reinstalling FSR. The method provides theoretical predictions of modest precision: < 2%. It is, however, sufficient for the current 1W data analysis at the LEP2 collider. Contrary to alternative methods implemented in other MC programs, our method works for the ISR multiphotons with finite p_T. Although this method is not an exact implementation of the complete/exact ISR, FSR and their interference, it is very closely modelled on it. We present a variety of numerical results obtained with the newest version of the KoralW Monte Carlo, in which this method is already implemented.
