Enlarging the magnetocaloric operating window of the Dy2NiMnO6 double perovskite

In this paper, we mainly focus on the magnetic and magnetocaloric features of La2-xDyxNiMnO6 double perovskites. Their magnetocaloric properties are investigated in terms of both entropy and adiabatic temperature changes. In contrast to early works, it was found that the Dy2NiMnO6 compound unveils dominant antiferromagnetic interactions under very low magnetic fields. The ordering of its Dy3+ magnetic moments is associated with a giant magnetocaloric effect at very low temperatures, while the established ferromagnetic Ni-O-Mn super-exchange interactions close to 100 K give rise to a moderate magnetocaloric level, only. On the other hand, the doping of Dy2NiMnO6 with high amounts of large-size rare earth elements such as La would enable us to cover an unusually wide magnetocaloric temperature range going from the liquid helium temperature up to room-temperature. More interestingly, the presence of both ordered and disordered ferromagnetic phases in La1.5Dy0.5NiMnO6 maintains constant the isothermal entropy changes over a temperature span of about 200 K, being a favorable situation from a practical point of view.

Unusual rotating magnetocaloric effect in the hexagonal ErMnO3 single crystal

It is known that orthorhombic RMnO3 multiferroics (R = magnetic rare earth) with low symmetry exhibit a large rotating magnetocaloric effect because of their strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. In this paper, we demonstrate that the hexagonal ErMnO3 single crystals also unveils a giant rotating magnetocaloric effect that can be obtained by spinning them in constant magnetic fields around their a or b axes. When the ErMnO3 crystal is rotated with the magnetic field initially parallel to the c-axis, the resulting entropy change reaches maximum values of 7, 17 and 20 J/kg K under a constant magnetic field of 2, 5 and 7 T, respectively. These values are comparable or even larger than those shown by some of the best orthorhombic phases. More interestingly, the generated anisotropic thermal effect is about three times larger than that exhibited by the hexagonal HoMnO3 single crystal. The enhancement of the rotating magnetocaloric effect in the hexagonal ErMnO3 compound arises from the unique features of Er3+ magnetic sublattice. In fact, the Er3+ magnetic moments located at 2a sites experience a first-order metamagnetic transition close to 3 K along the c-axis resulting in a peaked magnetocaloric effect over a narrower temperature range. In contrast, the (paramagnetic) behaviour of Er3+ magnetic moments within the ab-plane, produces a larger magnetocaloric effect over a wider temperature range. Therefore, the magnetocaloric effect anisotropy is maximized between the c and the ab-directions, leading to a giant rotating magnetocaloric effect.

Probing the role of Nd3+ ions in the weak multiferroic character of NdMn2O5 by optical spectroscopies

Raman and infrared spectroscopies are used as local probes to study the dynamics of the Nd-O bonds in the weakly multiferroic NdMn2O5 system. The temperature dependence of selected Raman excitations reveals the splitting of the Nd-O bonds in NdMn2O5. The Nd3+ ion crystal field (CF) excitations in NdMn2O5 single crystals are studied by infrared transmission as a function of temperature, in the 1800-8000 cm-1 range, and under an applied magnetic field up to 11 T. The frequencies of all 4Ij crystal-field levels of Nd3+ are determined. We find that the degeneracy of the ground-state Kramers doublet is lifted (Δ0 ~7.5 cm-1) due to the Nd3+-Mn3+ interaction in the ferroelectric phase, below TC ~ 28 K. The Nd3+ magnetic moment mNd(T) and its contribution to the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat are evaluated from Δ0(T) indicating that the Nd3+ ions are involved in the magnetic and the ferroelectric ordering observed below ~ 28 K. The Zeeman splitting of the excited crystal field levels of the Nd3+ ions at low temperature is also analyzed.

On the conventional and rotating magnetocaloric effects in multiferroic TbMn2O5 single crystals

Solid state-refrigerants have generated worldwide interest owing to their growing potential for use in efficient and green cooling devices. Caloric effects could be obtained by manipulating their degrees of freedom such as magnetization, electric polarization and volume using a variable external field. In conventional magnetocaloric refrigeration systems, the magnetocaloric effect is exploited by moving the active material in and out of the magnetic field source. Here we demonstrate that a giant and reversible magnetocaloric effect can be generated simply by rotating the multiferroic TbMn2O5 single crystal around its b axis in a relatively low constant magnetic field applied in the ac plane. For a magnetic field applied along the easy axis a, we report an entropy change of 12.25 J/kg K at about 10 K in a field change of 5 T which is 100 times larger than that found when the field is applied along the hard axis c. When the TbMn2O5 is rotated with the field remaining in the ac plane, the associated adiabatic temperature change reaches minimum values of 8 K and 14 K under 2 T and 5 T, respectively. This giant rotating magnetocaloric effect in TbMn2O5 is caused by the colossal anisotropy of the entropy change, the enhancement of the magnetization under relatively moderate magnetic fields and the lower magnitude of specific heat. On the other hand, the application of the coherent rotational model demonstrates that the rotating magnetocaloric effect exhibited by TbMn2O5 does not originate directly from the magneto-crystalline anisotropy. Our results should inspire and open new ways toward the implementation of compact, efficient and embedded magnetocaloric devices for low temperature and space application. Its potential operating temperature range of 2 to 30 K makes it a great candidate for the liquefaction of hydrogen.

Search for the magnetocaloric effect in multiferroics oxides

In this paper, we report on the magnetocaloric properties of some selected multiferroic oxides, namely HoMn2O5 and La2(Ni,Co)MnO6 compounds which exhibit transition points from 10K up to almost room temperature. In order to avoid grain boundary effects and structural inhomogeneity observed frequently in polycrystalline samples, only single crystals were considered for this study.

Investigation of phonon behavior in Pr2NiMnO6 by micro-Raman spectroscopy

The temperature dependence of phonon excitations and the presence of spin phonon coupling in polycrystalline Pr2NiMnO6 samples were studied using micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Magnetic properties show a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition at 228 K and a saturation magnetization close to 4.95 \muB/f.u.. Three distinct Raman modes at 657, 642, and 511 cm-1 are observed. The phonon excitations show a clear hardening due to anharmonicity from 300 K down to 10 K. Further, temperature dependence of the 657 cm-1 mode shows only a small softening. This reflects the presence of a relatively weak spin-phonon coupling in Pr2NiMnO6 contrary to other double perovskites previously studied.

Phase formation, phonon behavior, and magnetic properties of novel ferromagnetic La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Ni) triple perovskites

In the quest for novel magnetoelectric materials, we have grown, stabilized and explored the properties of La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Mn) thin films. In this paper, we report the influence of the growth parameters that promote B/Al/Mn ordering in the pseudo-cubic unit cell and their likely influence on the magnetic and multiferroic properties. The temperature dependence of the magnetization shows that La3CoAlMnO9 is ferromagnetic up to 190 K while La3NiAlMnO9 shows a TC of 130 K. The behavior of these films are compared and contrasted with related La2BMnO6 double perovskites. It is observed that the insertion of AlO6 octahedra between CoO6 and MnO6 suppresses significantly the strength of the superexchange interaction, spin-phonon and spin-polar coupling.

Multiferroic double perovskites: Opportunities, Issues and Challenges

Despite the great technological and scientific importance, a well-controlled coupled behavior in magnetoelectric multiferroic materials at room temperature remains challenging. We demonstrate that the self-ordered A2BBO6 (e.g., A = La, B = Mn, and B = Ni) double perovskites provide a unique alternative opportunity to control and/or to induce such behavior in oxides. In this paper, we outline and discuss the various challenges and bottleneck issues related to this class of materials using La2NiMnO6 as a prototype. Details of the synthesis strategies, using pulsed laser deposition as a central tool, to obtain a meticulous control over cation ordering is illustrated. The possible impact of Ni/Mn cation ordering on the magnetic ground states, ferromagnetic transition temperature, phonon behavior, and spin-phonon coupling are presented. Our results are also compared with the current literature on related compounds.

Influence of Ni/Mn cation order on the spin-phonon coupling in multifunctional La2NiMnO6 epitaxial films by polarized Raman spectroscopy

We report the influence of Ni/Mn ordering on the spin-phonon coupling in multifunctional La2NiMnO6. Three types of films with different levels of structural order, including long-range Ni/Mn cation order, cation disorder, and an admixture of the ordered and disordered phases, are compared by polarized micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Each film displays a strong dependence on the polarization configuration and a unique set of Raman active phonon excitations. Long-range cation ordering results in the splitting of Raman active phonon peaks because of Brillouin zone folding and lowering symmetry. Phonon mode softening begins clearly at a distinct temperature for each sample revealing a strong spin-lattice interaction. It follows closely the magnetization curve in ordered films. Unlike the admixture and the ordered films, softening behavior is strongly suppressed in the cation-disordered films. These differences may be understood based on the variation in amplitude of the spin-spin correlation functions due to the local Ni/Mn cation ordering.

Long-range Ni/Mn structural order in epitaxial double perovskite La2NiMnO6 thin films

We report and compare the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of ordered La2NiMnO6 thin films and its disordered LaNi0.5Mn0.5O3 counterpart. An x-ray diffraction study reveals that the B-site Ni/Mn ordering induces additional XRD reflections as the crystal symmetry is transformed from a pseudocubic perovskite unit cell in the disordered phase to a monoclinic form with larger lattice parameters for the ordered phase. Polarized Raman spectroscopy studies reveal that the ordered samples are characterized by additional phonon excitations that are absent in the disordered phase. The appearance of these additional phonon excitations is interpreted as the clearest signature of Brillouin zone folding as a result of the long-range Ni/Mn ordering in La2NiMnO6. Both ordered and disordered materials display a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition. The ordered films display also a saturation magnetization close to 4.8 mB/f.u. and a transition temperature (FM-TC) around 270 K, while the disordered ones have only a 3.7 mB/f.u. saturation magnetization and a FM-TC around 138 K. The differences in their magnetic behaviours are understood based on the distinct local electronic configurations of their Ni/Mn cations.

Growth, magnetic properties and Raman scattering of La2NiMnO6 single crystals

Millimeter size single crystals of double perovskite La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) were grown by the High Temperature Solution Growth Method. The magnetic measurements and polarized Raman spectra between 5 and 350K provide evidence that the crystals have high degree of Ni(2+)/Mn(4+)ordering, small amount of lattice defects and highest Tc = 288K reported so far for ferromagnetic double perovskites. At a microscopic level the crystals are heavily twinned and the effect of twinning on the Raman spectra is analyzed in detail.

Stabilization and functional properties of La3NiAlMnO9 and La3CoAlMnO9 magnetoelectric triple perovskites

Ferromagnetic La3NiAlMnO9 (LNAMO) and La3CoAlMnO9 (LCAMO) triple-perovskite thin films are stabilized in the 750-860 oC temperature range in 100 to 900 mTorr O2 pressure range using pulsed-laser deposition. The LCAMO and LNAMO films exhibit ferromagnetism up to 190 K and 130 K respectively. The structural, optical and magnetic properties of these films demonstrate that the B-site 3d-cations, Al, Mn and Co or Ni ions, are structurally short-range ordered. The strong spin-lattice-polarization coupling in LCAMO is evidenced by the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the softening of the phonon frequencies starting in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition mimicking the behaviours of La2CoMnO6 double perovskite.

Raman study of Twin Free YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ (Ortho-II) Single Crystals

The polarized Raman scattering spectra from freshly cleaved $ab$, $ac$, and $bc$ surfaces of high quality twin free YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ (Ortho-II) single crystals ($T_c$=57.5 K and $ΔT = 0.6$ K) were studied between 80 and 300 K. All eleven $A_g$ Raman modes expected for the Ortho-II structure as well some modes of $B_{2g}$ and $B_{3g}$ symmetry were identified in close comparison with predictions of lattice dynamical calculations. The electronic scattering from the $ab$ planes is strongly anisotropic and decreases between 200 and 100 K within the temperature range of previously reported pseudogap opening. The coupling of phonons to Raman active electronic excitations manifested by asymmetric (Fano) profiles of several modes also decreases in the same range. Among the new findings that distinguish the Raman scattering of Ortho-II from that of Ortho-I phase is the unusual relationship ($α_{xx} \approx -α_{yy}$) between the elements of the Raman tensor of the apex oxygen $A_g$ mode.

Ferromagnetism and magneto-dielectric effect in insulating LaBiMn4/3Co2/3O6 thin films

High quality epitaxial thin films of LaBiMn4/3Co2/3O6 perovskite were fabricated on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates by the pulsed laser deposition technique. Magnetization measurements reveal a strong magnetic anisotropy and a ferromagnetic behavior that is in agreement with a super-exchange interaction between Mn4+ and Co2+ ions, which are randomly distributed in the B-site. A distinct anomaly is observed in the dielectric measurements at 130K corresponding to the onset of the magnetic ordering, suggesting a coupling. Above this temperature, the extrinsic Maxwell-Wagner effect is dominating. Theses results are explained using the Raman spectroscopic studies indicating a weak spin-lattice interaction around this magnetic transition.

Distortion-Dependent Raman Spectra and Mode Mixing in RMnO3 Perovskites

The polarized Raman spectra of orthorhombic RMnO3 series (R=La,Pr,Nd,Sm,Eu,Gd,Tb,Dy,Ho,Y) were studied at room temperature. The variation of phonon frequencies with R ionic radius rR as a whole confirms the commonly accepted Raman line assignments with two noticeable exceptions: (1) with decreasing rR the stretching Ag(1) and bending Ag(3) modes strongly mix for R=Sm to Tb, while for further decrease or rR (R=Dy,Ho,Y) the Ag(3) mode is observed at higher frequency than Ag(1) mode; (2) similar distortion-dependent mode mixing takes place for the rotational Ag(2) and O1(x) [Ag(7)] modes. The mode mixing is particularly strong for the RMnO3 compounds with rR values close to the transition from A-type to incommensurate sinusoidal antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures. The frequency of rotational Ag(2) and Ag(4) modes scales to the angles of MnO6 [101] and [010] rotations, respectively, and could be used as a measure of their value.
