Scalable on-chip integration of diamond color centers for cryogenic quantum photonics

Chip integration of quantum emitters is a crucial milestone for scalable quantum photonic information processing. Among optically active defect centers for quantum photonics, diamond color centers are promising because of their long spin coherence times and high photon emission rates. However, for a coherent-photon emission, they typically require a cryogenic environment to protect optical coherence from thermal phonons, which makes chip integration challenging. In this paper, we develop a chip-integrated diamond photonic crystal cavity embedding an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. We confirm cryogenic operation by observing Purcell enhancement of NV-center emission via an edge-coupled optical fiber. This result demonstrates successful integration of diamond color centers, a photonic crystal cavity, and an optical waveguide-fiber package, representing a key step toward scalable diamond-based quantum communication platforms.

Water Cherenkov detectors with fiber enhanced PMT for cosmic ray observation

Water Cherenkov detectors (WCDs) have been widely used in cosmic ray observations. This paper presents, for the first time, a cost-effective WCD design integrating a small photomultiplier tube (PMT) with wavelength-shifting fiber (WLS fiber) bundles. A WCD prototype was constructed in our laboratory, utilizing a fiber-PMT photosensor composed of a small PMT optically coupled with a WLS fiber bundle. This work details the structure of the fiber-PMT and the WCD. Measurements show the photosensor's time shift is 6.71 ns. Using cosmic ray muons, the WCD prototype demonstrated a light yield up to 30 photoelectrons with 2.3 ns time resolution under optimal conditions. Furthermore, tests under different trigger configurations indicate good performance uniformity. These findings validate the feasibility of the proposed design. A comparative analysis between a WCD using a standalone PMT and one equipped with the fiber-PMT shows that the fiber-PMT achieves nearly a 200\% improvement in light yield, albeit with a slight reduction in time performance.

Simulating a quantum commensurate-incommensurate phase transition using two Raman coupled one dimensional condensates

We study a transition between a homogeneous and an inhomogeneous phase in a system of one-dimensional, Raman tunnel-coupled Bose gases. The homogeneous phase shows a flat density and phase profile, whereas the inhomogeneous ground state is characterized by periodic density ripples, and a soliton staircase in the phase difference. We show that under experimentally viable conditions the transition can be tuned by the wavevector difference $Q$ of the Raman beams and can be described by the Pokrovsky-Talapov model for the relative phase between the two condensates. Local imaging available in atom chip experiments allows to observe the soliton lattice directly, while modulation spectroscopy can be used to explore collective modes, such as the phonon mode arising from breaking of translation symmetry by the soliton lattice. In addition, we investigate regimes where the cold atom experiment deviates from the Pokrovsky-Talapov field theory. We predict unusual mesoscopic effects arising from the finite size of the system, such as quantized injection of solitons upon increasing $Q$, or the system size. For moderate values of $Q$ above criticality, we find that the density modulations in the two gases interplay with the relative phase profile and introduce novel features in the spatial structure of the mode wave-functions. Using an inhomogeneous Bogoliubov theory, we show that spatial quantum fluctuations are intertwined with the emerging soliton staircase. Finally, we comment on the prospects of the ultra-cold atom setup as a tunable platform studying quantum aspects of the Pokrovsky-Talapov theory in and out-of-equilibrium.

Putative spin liquid in the triangle-based iridate Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$

We report on thermodynamic, magnetization, and muon spin relaxation measurements of the strong spin-orbit coupled iridate Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$, which constitutes a new frustration motif made up a mixture of edge- and corner-sharing triangles. In spite of strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction of the order of 100~K, we find no hint for long-range magnetic order down to 23 mK. The magnetic specific heat data unveil the $T$-linear and -squared dependences at low temperatures below 1~K. At the respective temperatures, the zero-field muon spin relaxation features a persistent spin dynamics, indicative of unconventional low-energy excitations. A comparison to the $4d$ isostructural compound Ba$_3$RuTi$_2$O$_9$ suggests that a concerted interplay of compass-like magnetic interactions and frustrated geometry promotes a dynamically fluctuating state in a triangle-based iridate.

Spontaneous structural distortion of metallic Shastry-Sutherland system DyB4 by quadrupole-spin-lattice coupling

DyB4 has a two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland (Sh-S) lattice with strong Ising character of the Dy ions. Despite the intrinsic frustrations, surprisingly, it undergoes two successive transitions: a magnetic ordering at TN = 20K, and a quadrupole ordering at TQ=12.5 K. From high-resolution neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction studies, we have obtained full structural information on this material in all phases, and demonstrate that structural modifications occurring at quadrupolar transition lead to the lifting of frustrations inherent in the Sh-S model. Our study thus provides a complete experimental picture of how the intrinsic frustration of the Sh-S lattice can be lifted by the coupling to quadrupole moments. We show that two other factors, i.e. strong spin-orbit coupling and long-range RKKY interaction in metallic DyB4, play an important role in this behavior.

Spin excitations in hole-overdoped iron-based superconductors

Understanding the overall features of magnetic excitation is essential for clarifying the mechanism of Cooper pair formation in iron-based superconductors. In particular, clarifying the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity is a central challenge because magnetism may play a key role in their exotic superconductivity. BaFe2As2 is one of ideal systems for such investigation because its superconductivity can be induced in several ways, allowing a comparative examination. Here we report a study on the spin fluctuations of the hole-overdoped iron-based superconductors Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.5 and 1.0; Tc = 36 K and 3.4 K, respectively) over the entire Brillouin zone using inelastic neutron scattering. We find that their spin spectra consist of spin wave and chimney-like dispersions. The chimney-like dispersion can be attributed to the itinerant character of magnetism. The band width of the spin wave-like dispersion is almost constant from the non-doped to optimum-doped region, which is followed by a large reduction in the overdoped region. This suggests that the superconductivity is suppressed by the reduction of magnetic exchange couplings, indicating a strong relationship between magnetism and superconductivity in iron-based superconductors.

Inhomogeneities and impurities in a dense one-dimensional Rydberg lattice gas

We consider a dense one-dimensional laser-driven Rydberg lattice gas with perfect nearest-neighbor blockade. The ground state of this system can be found analytically in certain parameter regimes even when the applied fields are inhomogeneous in space. We will use this unique feature to investigate the effect of an impurity - introduced by the local variation of the laser parameters - on the correlations of the many-body ground state. Moreover, we explore the role of a staggered laser field which alternates from site to site thereby breaking the sublattice symmetry. We demonstrate that this technique, which can be applied experimentally, reveals insights into the role of long-range interactions on the critical properties of a Rydberg gas. Our work highlight novel possibilities for the exploration of many-body physics in Rydberg lattice gases based on locally tuneable laser fields.

Equilibration of quantum hard rods in one dimension

We study the out-of-equilibrium evolution of a strongly interacting quantum spin chain which is mapped on a system of hard rods that are coherently deposited on and removed from a lattice. We show that this closed quantum system approaches an equilibrium steady state which strongly resembles a microcanonical ensemble of classical hard rods. Starting from the fully coherent evolution equation we derive a Master equation for the evolution of the number of hard rods on the lattice. This equation does not only capture properties of the equilibrium state but also describes the dynamical non-equilibrium evolution into it for the majority of initial conditions. We analyze this in detail for hard rods of varying size.

Magnetic field-induced instability of the cooperative paramagnetic state in Zn$_x$Co$_{4-x}$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2$

Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques with and without application of an external magnetic field $H$, the magnetic ground states of Zn$_x$Co$_{4-x}$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2$ ($x=0,1$) were studied. Our results show that for $x=0$, the ground state is a magnetic long-range ordered (LRO) state where each tetrahedron forms an "umbrella"-type structure. On the other hand, for $x=1$, no static ordering was observed down to 1.5 K, which resembles the behavior found in the isostructural quantum system Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2$. When $H$ field is applied, however the $x=1$ system develops the same LRO state as $x=0$. This indicates that the $x=1$ disordered state is in the vicinity of the $x=0$ ordered state.

Two-dimensional Rydberg gases and the quantum hard squares model

We study a two-dimensional lattice gas of atoms that are photo-excited to high-lying Rydberg states in which they interact via the van-der-Waals interaction. We explore the regime of dominant nearest neighbor interaction where this system is intimately connected to a quantum version of Baxter's hard squares model. We show that the strongly correlated ground state of the Rydberg gas can be analytically described by a projected entangled pair state that constitutes the ground state of the quantum hard squares model. This correspondence allows us to identify a first order phase boundary where the Rydberg gas undergoes a transition from a disordered (liquid) phase to an ordered (solid) phase.

Coupling of spin and orbital excitations in the iron-based superconductor FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5)

We present a combined analysis of neutron scattering and photoemission measurements on superconducting FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5). The low-energy magnetic excitations disperse only in the direction transverse to the characteristic wave vector (1/2,0,0), whereas the electronic Fermi surface near (1/2,0,0) appears to consist of four incommensurate pockets. While the spin resonance occurs at an incommensurate wave vector compatible with nesting, neither spin-wave nor Fermi-surface-nesting models can describe the magnetic dispersion. We propose that a coupling of spin and orbital correlations is key to explaining this behavior. If correct, it follows that these nematic fluctuations are involved in the resonance and could be relevant to the pairing mechanism.

Investigation of the spin-glass regime between the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases in Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_x$Te$_{1-x}$

Using bulk magnetization along with elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, we have investigated the phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ and the nature of magnetic correlations in three nonsuperconducting samples of Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.9}$, Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.15}$Te$_{0.85}$ and Fe$_{1.02}$Se$_{0.3}$Te$_{0.7}$. A cusp and hysteresis in the temperature dependence of the magnetization for the $x=0.15$ and 0.3 samples indicates spin-glass (SG) ordering below $T_{\rm sg} = 23$K. Neutron scattering measurements indicate that the spin-glass behavior is associated with short-range spin density wave (SDW) ordering characterized by a static component and a low-energy dynamic component with a characteristic incommensurate wave vector of ${\bf Q}_m = (0.46, 0, 0.50)$ and an anisotropy gap of $\sim$ 2.5 meV. Our high ${\bf Q}$-resolution data also show that the systems undergo a glassy structural distortion that coincides with the short-range SDW order.

Glassy Spin Freezing and Gapless Spin Dynamics in a Spatially Anisotropic Triangular Antiferromagnet Ag2MnO2

Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, we show that upon cooling a spatially anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet Ag$_2$MnO$_2$ freezes below $T_f ~\sim 50$ K into short range collinear state. The static spin correlations are extremely two-dimensional, and the spin fluctuations are gapless with two characteristic relaxation rates that behave linearly with temperature.

Spin-lattice order in frustrated ZnCr2O4

Using synchrotron X-rays and neutron diffraction we disentangle spin-lattice order in highly frustrated ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ where magnetic chromium ions occupy the vertices of regular tetrahedra. Upon cooling below 12.5 K the quandary of anti-aligning spins surrounding the triangular faces of tetrahedra is resolved by establishing weak interactions on each triangle through an intricate lattice distortion. The resulting spin order is however, not simply a Néel state on strong bonds. A complex co-planar spin structure indicates that antisymmetric and/or further neighbor exchange interactions also play a role as ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ resolves conflicting magnetic interactions.

Weakly coupled $s = 1/2$ quantum spin singlets in Ba$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$

Using single crystal inelastic neutron scattering with and without application of an external magnetic field and powder neutron diffraction, we have characterized magnetic interactions in Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. Even without field, we found that there exist three singlet-to-triplet excitation modes in $(h,h,l)$ scattering plane. Our complete analysis shows that the three modes are due to spatially anisotropic interdimer interactions that are induced by local distortions of the tetrahedron of oxygens surrounding the Jahn-Teller active Cr$^{5+} (3d^1)$. The strong intradimer coupling of $J_0 = 2.38(2)$ meV and weak interdimer interactions ($|J_{\rm inter}| \leq 0.52(2)$ meV) makes Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ a good model system for weakly-coupled $s = 1/2$ quantum spin dimers.

External magnetic field effects on a distorted kagome antiferromagnet

We report bulk magnetization, and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements under an external magnetic field, $H$, on the weakly coupled distorted kagome system, Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl. Our results show that the ordered state below 6.7 K is a canted antiferromagnet and consists of large antiferromagnetic $ac$-components and smaller ferromagnetic $b$-components. By first-principle calculations and linear spin wave analysis, we present a simple spin hamiltonian with non-uniform nearest neighbor exchange interactions resulting in a system of coupled spin trimers with a single-ion anisotropy that can qualitatively reproduce the spin dynamics of Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl.

Non-resonant and Resonant X-ray Scattering Studies on Multiferroic TbMn2O5

Comprehensive x-ray scattering studies, including resonant scattering at Mn L-edge, Tb L- and M-edges, were performed on single crystals of TbMn2O5. X-ray intensities were observed at a forbidden Bragg position in the ferroelectric phases, in addition to the lattice and the magnetic modulation peaks. Temperature dependences of their intensities and the relation between the modulation wave vectors provide direct evidences of exchange striction induced ferroelectricity. Resonant x-ray scattering results demonstrate the presence of multiple magnetic orders by exhibiting their different temperature dependences. The commensurate-to-incommensurate phase transition around 24 K is attributed to discommensuration through phase slipping of the magnetic orders in spin frustrated geometries. We proposed that the low temperature incommensurate phase consists of the commensurate magnetic domains separated by anti-phase domain walls which reduce spontaneous polarizations abruptly at the transition.
