Moir\'e-free ultrathin iron oxide film: FeO(111) on Ag(111)

Ultrathin iron oxide films epitaxially grown on the (111)- and (0001)-oriented metal single crystal supports exhibit unique electronic, catalytic and magnetic properties not observed for the corresponding bulk oxides. These properties originate mainly from the presence of Moir\'e superstructures which, in turn, disqualify ultrathin films as model systems imitating bulk materials. We present a route for the preparation of a close-packed Moir\'e-free ultrathin iron oxide film, namely FeO(111) on Ag(111). Experimental scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirm perfect structural order in the film. Density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations suggest full relaxation of the oxide layer that adopts the atomic lattice of the crystalline support and exhibits properties similar to those of a free-standing FeO. The results open new pathways for model-type studies of electronic, catalytic and magnetic properties of fully-relaxed iron oxide films and related systems.

Nonequilibrium transport equations and ab initio study of adsorption processes on carbon nanotubes

In a theoretical study of gas adsorption on carbon nanotubes (CNT) nonequilibrium processes of ionization, polarization, surface diffusion and desorption of atoms are considered self-consistently. The approach is based on Zubarev's method of nonequilibrium statistical operator and reaction-diffusion theory. The set of nonlinear transport equations are obtained for the chosen parameters of description: the average numbers of adsorbed atoms, ionized and polarized atoms in the electromagnetic field of CNT, and the average number of atoms desorbed from the CNT surface. Ab initio simulations are conducted for a "gas-single wall carbon nanotube" system for gases of particular practical interest: He and NO. The obtained values of adsorption energy reveal preferable localization sites of absorbed He atoms as well as their dependency on adsorption distances. A significant effect of NO adsorption on CNT electronic properties is demonstrated. The effect of presence of vacancies on adsorption nature is analyzed. It is shown that under the influence of vacancy formation the CNT structure undergoes reconstruction that enables chemisorption of NO molecules.

Magnetization Enhancement in Magnetite Nanoparticles Capped with Alginic Acid

We report on the effect of organic acid capping on the behavior of magnetite nanoparticles. The nanoparticles of magnetite were obtained using microwave activated process, and the magnetic properties as well as the electron magnetic resonance behavior were studied for the Fe3O4 nanoparticles capped with alginic acid. The capped nanoparticles exhibit improved crystalline structure of the surface which leads to an enhanced magnetization. The saturation magnetization Ms increases to ~75% of the bulk magnetization. The improved structure also facilitates quantization of spin-wave spectrum in the finite size nanoparticles and this in turn is responsible for unconventional behavior at low temperatures. In magnetic resonance these anomalies are manifested as an unusual increase in the resonant field Hr(T) and also as a maximum of the spectroscopic splitting geff parameter at low temperatures. The unconventional behavior of the nanoparticles also leads to pronounced upturn of magnetization at low temperatures and a deviation from the Bloch law M(T) T^3/2.

Morphology and magnetic properties of Fe3O4-alginic acid nanocomposites

Morphology, structure and magnetic properties of nanocomposites of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and alginic acid (AA) are studied. Magnetite Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the nanoparticles capped with alginic acid exhibit very distinct properties. The chemical bonding between alginic acid and surface of magnetite nanoparticles results in recovery of surface magnetization. On the other hand, it also leads to enhanced surface spin disorder and unconventional behavior of magnetization observed in Fe3O4-AA nanocomposites at low temperatures.
