Photon-mediated charge-exchange reactions between 39K atoms and 40Ca+ ions in a hybrid trap

We present experimental evidence of charge exchange between laser-cooled potassium $^{39}$K atoms and calcium $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions in a hybrid atom-ion trap and give quantitative theoretical explanations for the observations. The $^{39}$K atoms and $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions are held in a magneto-optical (MOT) and a linear Paul trap, respectively. Fluorescence detection and high resolution time of flight mass spectra for both species are used to determine the remaining number of $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions, the increasing number of $^{39}$K$^+$ ions, and $^{39}$K number density as functions of time. Simultaneous trap operation is guaranteed by alternating periods of MOT and $^{40}$Ca$^+$ cooling lights, thus avoiding direct ionization of $^{39}$K by the $^{40}$Ca$^+$ cooling light. We show that the K-Ca$^+$ charge-exchange rate coefficient increases linearly from zero with $^{39}$K number density and, surprisingly, the fraction of $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions in the 4p\,$^2$P$_{1/2}$ electronically-excited state. Combined with our theoretical analysis, we conclude that these data can only be explained by a process that starts with a potassium atom in its electronic ground state and a calcium ion in its excited 4p\,$^2$P$_{1/2}$ state producing ground-state $^{39}$K$^+$ ions and metastable, neutral Ca\,(3d4p$^3$P$_1$) atoms, releasing only 150 cm$^{-1}$ equivalent relative kinetic energy. Charge-exchange between either ground- or excited-state $^{39}$K and ground-state $^{40}$Ca$^+$ is negligibly small as no energetically-favorable product states are available. Our experimental and theoretical rate coefficients of $9\times10^{-10}$ cm$^3$/s are in agreement given the uncertainty budgets.

Photodissociation of trapped Rb$^+_2$ : Implications for simultaneous trapping of atoms and molecular ions

The direct photodissociation of trapped $^{85}$Rb$_2^+$ (rubidium) molecular ions by the cooling light for the $^{85}$Rb magneto-optical trap (MOT) is studied, both experimentally and theoretically. Vibrationally excited Rb$_{2}^{+}$ ions are created by photoionization of Rb$_{2}$ molecules formed photoassociatively in the Rb MOT and are trapped in a modified spherical Paul trap. The decay rate of the trapped Rb$_{2}^{+}$ ion signal in the presence of the MOT cooling light is measured and agreement with our calculated rates for molecular ion photodissociation is observed. The photodissociation mechanism due to the MOT light is expected to be active and therefore universal for all homonuclear diatomic alkali metal molecular ions.

Hybrid ion, atom and light trap

We present an unique experimental arrangement which permits the simultaneous trapping and cooling of ions and neutral atoms, within a Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity. The versatility of this hybrid trap experiment enables a variety of studies with trapped mixtures. The motivations behind the production of such a hybrid trap system are explained, followed by details of how the experiment is put together. Several experiments that have been performed with this system are presented and some opportunities with this system are discussed. However the primary emphasis is focussed on the aspects that pertain to the trapped ions, in this hybrid system.

Soil Classification Using GATree

This paper details the application of a genetic programming framework for classification of decision tree of Soil data to classify soil texture. The database contains measurements of soil profile data. We have applied GATree for generating classification decision tree. GATree is a decision tree builder that is based on Genetic Algorithms (GAs). The idea behind it is rather simple but powerful. Instead of using statistic metrics that are biased towards specific trees we use a more flexible, global metric of tree quality that try to optimize accuracy and size. GATree offers some unique features not to be found in any other tree inducers while at the same time it can produce better results for many difficult problems. Experimental results are presented which illustrate the performance of generating best decision tree for classifying soil texture for soil data set.
