Symbolic integration of a product of two spherical bessel functions with an additional exponential and polynomial factor

We present a mathematica package that performs the symbolic calculation of integrals of the form \int^{\infty}_0 e^{-x/u} x^n j_ν (x) j_μ (x) dx where $j_ν (x)$ and $j_μ (x)$ denote spherical Bessel functions of integer orders, with $ν\ge 0$ and $μ\ge 0$. With the real parameter $u>0$ and the integer $n$, convergence of the integral requires that $n+ν+μ\ge 0$. The package provides analytical result for the integral in its most simplified form. The novel symbolic method employed enables the calculation of a large number of integrals of the above form in a fraction of the time required for conventional numerical and Mathematica based brute-force methods. We test the accuracy of such analytical expressions by comparing the results with their numerical counterparts.

Symbolic computation of the Hartree-Fock energy from a chiral EFT three-nucleon interaction at N$^2$LO

We present the first of a two-part Mathematica notebook collection that implements a symbolic approach for the application of the density matrix expansion (DME) to the Hartree-Fock (HF) energy from a chiral effective field theory (EFT) three-nucleon interaction at N$^2$LO. The final output from the notebooks is a Skyrme-like energy density functional that provides a quasi-local approximation to the nonlocal HF energy. In this paper, we discuss the derivation of the HF energy and its simplification in terms of the scalar/vector-isoscalar/isovector parts of the one-body density matrix. Furthermore, a set of steps is described and illustrated on how to extend the approach to other three-nucleon interactions.

Nuclear matter from chiral low-momentum interactions

Nuclear matter calculations based on low-momentum interactions derived from chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon effective field theory interactions and fit only to few-body data predict realistic saturation properties with controlled uncertainties. This is promising for a unified description of nuclei and to develop a universal density functional based on low-momentum interactions.

Density Matrix Expansion for Low-Momentum Interactions

A first step toward a universal nuclear energy density functional based on low-momentum interactions is taken using the density matrix expansion (DME) of Negele and Vautherin. The DME is adapted for non-local momentum-space potentials and generalized to include local three-body interactions. Different prescriptions for the three-body DME are compared. Exploratory results are given at the Hartree-Fock level, along with a roadmap for systematic improvements within an effective action framework for Kohn-Sham density functional theory.

Low-momentum interactions in three- and four-nucleon scattering

Low momentum two-nucleon interactions obtained with the renormalization group method and the similarity renormalization group method are used to study the cutoff dependence of low energy 3N and 4N scattering observables. The residual cutoff dependence arises from omitted short-ranged 3N (and higher) forces that are induced by the renormalization group transformations, and may help to estimate the sensitivity of various 3N and 4N scattering observables to short-ranged many-body forces.

Block Diagonalization using SRG Flow Equations

By choosing appropriate generators for the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) flow equations, different patterns of decoupling in a Hamiltonian can be achieved. Sharp and smooth block-diagonal forms of phase-shift equivalent nucleon-nucleon potentials in momentum space are generated as examples and compared to analogous low-momentum interactions ("v_lowk").

Convergence in the no-core shell model with low-momentum two-nucleon interactions

The convergence of no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations using renormalization group evolved low-momentum two-nucleon interactions is studied for light nuclei up to Li-7. Because no additional transformation was used in applying the NCSM framework, the energy calculations satisfy the variational principle for a given Hamiltonian. Dramatic improvements in convergence are found as the cutoffs are lowered. The renormalization group equations are truncated at two-body interactions, so the evolution is only approximately unitary and converged energies for A > 2 vary with the cutoff. This approximation is systematic, however, and for useful cutoff ranges the energy variation is comparable to natural-size truncation errors inherent from the initial chiral effective field theory potential.

Decoupling in the Similarity Renormalization Group for Nucleon-Nucleon Forces

Decoupling via the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) of low-energy nuclear physics from high-energy details of the nucleon-nucleon interaction is examined for two-body observables and few-body binding energies. The universal nature of this decoupling is illustrated and errors from suppressing high-momentum modes above the decoupling scale are shown to be perturbatively small.

Three-Body Forces Produced by a Similarity Renormalization Group Transformation in a Simple Model

A simple class of unitary renormalization group transformations that force hamiltonians towards a band-diagonal form produce few-body interactions in which low- and high-energy states are decoupled, which can greatly simplify many-body calculations. One such transformation has been applied to phenomenological and effective field theory nucleon-nucleon interactions with success, but further progress requires consistent treatment of at least the three-nucleon interaction. In this paper we demonstrate in an extremely simple model how these renormalization group transformations consistently evolve two- and three-body interactions towards band-diagonal form, and introduce a diagrammatic approach that generalizes to the realistic nuclear problem.

Weinberg Eigenvalues and Pairing with Low-Momentum Potentials

The nonperturbative nature of nucleon-nucleon interactions evolved to low momentum has recently been investigated in free space and at finite density using Weinberg eigenvalues as a diagnostic. This analysis is extended here to the in-medium eigenvalues near the Fermi surface to study pairing. For a fixed value of density and cutoff Lambda, the eigenvalues increase arbitrarily in magnitude close to the Fermi surface, signaling the pairing instability. When using normal-phase propagators, the Weinberg analysis with complex energies becomes a form of stability analysis and the pairing gap can be estimated from the largest attractive eigenvalue. With Nambu-Gorkov Green's functions, the largest attractive eigenvalue goes to unity close to the Fermi surface, indicating the presence of bound states (Cooper pairs), and the corresponding eigenvector leads to the self-consistent gap function.

Similarity Renormalization Group for Nucleon-Nucleon Interactions

The similarity renormalization group (SRG) is based on unitary transformations that suppress off-diagonal matrix elements, forcing the hamiltonian towards a band-diagonal form. A simple SRG transformation applied to nucleon-nucleon interactions leads to greatly improved convergence properties while preserving observables, and provides a method to consistently evolve many-body potentials and other operators.

Are low-energy nuclear observables sensitive to high-energy phase shifts?

Conventional nucleon-nucleon potentials with strong short-range repulsion require contributions from high-momentum wave function components even for low-energy observables such as the deuteron binding energy. This can lead to the misconception that reproducing high-energy phase shifts is important for such observables. Interactions derived via the similarity renormalization group decouple high-energy and low-energy physics while preserving the phase shifts from the starting potential. They are used to show that high-momentum components (and high-energy phase shifts) can be set to zero when using low-momentum interactions, without losing information relevant for low-energy observables.

Low-momentum interactions with smooth cutoffs

Nucleon-nucleon potentials evolved to low momentum, which show great promise in few- and many-body calculations, have generally been formulated with a sharp cutoff on relative momenta. However, a sharp cutoff has technical disadvantages and can cause convergence problems at the 10-100 keV level in the deuteron and triton. This motivates using smooth momentum-space regulators as an alternative. We generate low-momentum interactions with smooth cutoffs both through energy-independent renormalization group methods and using a multi-step process based on the Bloch-Horowitz approach. We find greatly improved convergence for calculations of the deuteron and triton binding energies in a harmonic oscillator basis compared to results with a sharp cutoff. Even a slight evolution of chiral effective field theory interactions to lower momenta is beneficial. The renormalization group preserves the long-range part of the interaction, and consequently the renormalization of long-range operators, such as the quadrupole moment, the radius and 1/r, is small. This demonstrates that low-energy observables in the deuteron are reproduced without short-range correlations in the wave function.

Convergence of the Born Series with Low-Momentum Interactions

The nonperturbative nature of nucleon-nucleon interactions as a function of a momentum cutoff is studied using Weinberg eigenvalues as a diagnostic. This investigation extends an earlier study of the perturbative convergence of the Born series to partial waves beyond the 3S1-3D1 channel and to positive energies. As the cutoff is lowered using renormalization-group or model-space techniques, the evolution of nonperturbative features at large cutoffs from strong short-range repulsion and the iterated tensor interaction are monitored via the complex Weinberg eigenvalues. When all eigenvalues lie within the unit circle, the expansion of the scattering amplitude in terms of the interaction is perturbative, with the magnitude of the largest eigenvalue setting the rate of convergence. Major decreases in the magnitudes of repulsive eigenvalues are observed as the Argonne v18, CD-Bonn or Nijmegen potentials are evolved to low momentum, even though two-body observables are unchanged. For chiral EFT potentials, running the cutoff lower tames the impact of the tensor force and of new nonperturbative features entering at N3LO. The efficacy of separable approximations to nuclear interactions derived from the Weinberg analysis is studied as a function of cutoff, and the connection to inverse scattering is demonstrated.

Variational Calculations using Low-Momentum Potentials with Smooth Cutoffs

Recent variational calculations of the deuteron and the triton illustrate that simple wave function ansatze become more effective after evolving the nucleon-nucleon potential to lower momentum (``V_lowk''). However, wave function artifacts from the use of sharp cutoffs in relative momentum decrease effectiveness for small cutoffs (< 2 fm^-1) and slow down convergence in harmonic oscillator bases. These sharp cutoff artifacts are eliminated when V_lowk is generated using a sufficiently smooth cutoff regulator.

Is nuclear matter perturbative with low-momentum interactions?

The nonperturbative nature of inter-nucleon interactions is explored by varying the momentum cutoff of a two-nucleon potential. Conventional force models, which have large cutoffs, are nonperturbative because of strong short-range repulsion, the iterated tensor interaction, and the presence of bound or nearly-bound states. But for low-momentum interactions with cutoffs around 2 fm^{-1}, the softened potential combined with Pauli blocking leads to corrections in nuclear matter in the particle-particle channel that are well converged at second order in the potential, suggesting that perturbation theory can be used in place of Brueckner resummations. Calculations of nuclear matter using the low-momentum two-nucleon force V_{low k} with a corresponding leading-order three-nucleon (3N) force from chiral effective field theory (EFT) exhibit nuclear binding in the Hartree-Fock approximation, and become less cutoff dependent with the inclusion of the dominant second-order contributions. The role of the 3N force is essential to obtain saturation, and the contribution to the total potential energy is compatible with EFT power-counting estimates.

Variational Calculations of Nuclei with Low-Momentum Potentials

Variational calculations of the deuteron and the triton illustrate that simple wave function ansätze become more effective after evolving the nucleon-nucleon potential to lower momentum (``$V_{low k}$''). This is consistent with many-body wave functions becoming much less correlated at lower cutoffs, as shown by two-particle wave functions and pair-distribution functions in nuclear matter. These results motivate a program to explore variational many-body calculations of binding energies and other low-energy nuclear properties using low-momentum potentials.
