Modulation of Autonomous Nervous System activity by gyrosonic stimulation

A novel audio binaural stimulus that generates rotational perceptions of sound movement in brain at a particular predetermined frequency is referred as gyrosonics. The influence of gyrosonics on autonomic nervous system of healthy subjects has been examined by analyzing heart rate variability (HRV) in time- and frequency- domain. The M-lagged Poincare plot shows that the parameters SD1, SD2 and ratio SD12 (SD1/SD2) increases with lagged number M, and M-dependence is well described by Pade' approximant $χ\frac{1+βM}{1+γM}$ where values of $χ$, $β$ and $ γ$ depend on parameters SD1,SD2 and SD12. The values of these parameters for different M are augmented after gyrosonic stimulation. The slope and magnitude of curvature of SD1 and SD12 vs M plot increase considerably due to stimulation. The DFA analysis exhibits decrease in value of exponent $α$ due to stimulation. This stimulation results slower Heart rate, higher values of the standard deviation SD and the root-mean squared successive differences (RMSSD) in RR-interval. The spectral power of both low (LF) - and high (HF) - frequency go up due to the stimulation. The results suggest an improvement of the sympatho-vagal balance due to this novel audio stimulus.

Lagged Poincaré and auto-correlation analysis of Heart rate variability in diabetes

The heart rate variability (HRV) in diabetic human subjects, has been analyzed using lagged Poincaré plot, auto-correlation and the detrended fluctuation analysis methods. The parameters $SD1$, and $SD12 (= SD1/SD2)$ for Poincaré plot for diabetic are lower than that for non-diabetic subjects and reverse is case for $SD2$ for all lagged number (m). The slope and the curvature of the plot SD12 vs m is much reduced for diabetic subject. The scatter plot of two successive interbeat intervals points out smaller variability in diabetic heart. The detrended fluctuation exponent has a higher value for diabetic group. The auto-correlation function of the deviation of interbeat interval in diabetic group shows highly correlated pattern when compared to that of normal one. The study suggests that the curvature of $SD12$ and auto-correlation method appear to be better way to assess the alteration of regulatory system on heart dynamics in diabetic condition.

Interplay of magnetic order and Jahn-Teller distortion in a model with strongly correlated electron system

The Hubbard model has been employed successfully to understand many aspects of correlation driven physical properties, in particular, the magnetic order in itenerant electron systems. In some systems such as Heusler alloys, manganites etc., it is known that, in addition to magnetic order, distortion induced by Jahn-Teller(J-T) effect also exists. In this paper, based on two-fold degenerate Hubbard model, the influence of magnetic order on J-T distortion is investigated. The electron correlation is treated using a spectral density approach and J-T interaction is added to the model. We find that magnetic order and structural distortion coexist at low temperature $T$ for a certain range of electron correlation strength $U$, J-T coupling strength $G$ and band occupation $n$. At T=0, for a given $n$ and $U$, magnetic order is present but distortion appears only for a $G$ larger than a critical value. We also studied the temperature dependence of lattice strain and magnetization choosing a $G$ close to the critical value.

Gyrosonics a Novel Stimulant for Autonomic Nervous System

Gyrosonics refers to novel audio binaural stimulus that produces rotational perceptions of sound movement in head at a particular predetermined frequency. Therapeutic effect observed with this is considered to be associated with modification of arousal of autonomic nervous system. The heart rate variability (HRV), non-invasive measure of autonomic nervous system, has been measured for group of 30 subjects for pre- and post- gyrosonic installation. The time- and frequency- domain analysis of HRV results show overall decrease in sympathetic response and increase in para- sympathetic response due to listening of gyro sonics.

Influence of Demagnetization Effect on Giant Magneto Impedance of soft Ferromagnetic Metal

The large change in electromagnetic impedance in ferromagnetic state of soft magnetic metals in presence of biasing magnetic field is associated with change in screening of electromagnetic field. The screening depends on the permeability of the metal. Apart from dependence on intrinsic properties of metal the permeability depends on size of the sample. It is observed that the decrease in MI in amorphous ferromagnetic ribbon of Fe40Ni40B20 alloy is large for long sample whereas corresponding change is small for short one with same biasing field. As intrinsic magnetic properties and bias field are same and the demagnetization factor increases with reduction of length of the sample the reduction of MI effect is associated with demagnetization field.

Very large Magneto-impedance and its scaling behavior in amorphous Fe73.5Nb3Cu1Si13.5B9 ribbon

Magneto-impedance (MI) effects have been observed for amorphous Fe73.5Nb3Cu1Si13.5B9 ribbon which has been excited by an a.c. magnetic field parallel to the length of the ribbon. Maximum relative change in MI as large as -99% was observed which has never been reported before. The relative change in MI, when plotted against scaled field was found to be nearly frequency independent. A phenomenological formula for magneto-impedance, Z(H), in a ferromagnetic material, is proposed based on Pade approximant to describe the scaled behavior of MI.

Magnetic Field and Displacement sensor based on Giant Magneto-impedance effect

A two-core transducer assembly using a Fe73.5Nb3Cu1Si13.5B9 ribbon to detect a change of magnetic field is proposed and tested for displacement (linear and angular) and current sensor. Two identical inductors, with the ribbon as core, are a part of two series resonance network, and are in high impedance state when excited by a small a.c field of 1MHz in absence of d.c biasing field (Hdc). When the magnetic state of one inductor is altered by biasing field, produced by a bar magnet or current carrying coil, an ac signal proportional to Hdc is generated by transducer. The results for the sensitivity and linearity with displacement (linear and angular) of a magnet and with field from the current carrying coil are presented for two particular configurations of the transducer. High sensitivities of voltage response as much as 12micro-volt/micro-meter and 3mV/degree have been obtained for the transducer as a linear and angular displacement sensor respectively in the transverse configuration of exciting a.c and biasing d.c fields.

Anisotropic Dependence of Giant Magneto-Impedance of Amorphous Ferromagnetic Ribbon on Biasing Field

The magneto-impedance (MI) in amorphous ribbon of nominal composition Fe73.5Nb3Cu1Si13.5B9 has been measured at 1MHz and at room temperature for different configurations of exciting a.c and biasing d.c. fields. A large drop in both resistance and reactance is observed as a function of d.c magnetic field. When the d.c and a.c fields are parallel but normal to the axis of ribbon, smaller magnetic field is needed to reduce the impedance to its small saturated value compared to the situation when fields are along the axis of ribbon. Larger d.c. field is required to lower the impedance when the d.c field acts perpendicular to the plane of the ribbon. Such anisotropy in magneto-impedance is related to the anisotropic response of the magnetization of ribbon. The large change of impedance is attributed to large variation of a.c permeability on the direction and magnitude of the dc biasing field.

Giant magneto-impedance in Ag-doped La0.7Sr0.3MnO3

The resistive and reactive parts of the magneto-impedance of sintered ferromagnetic samples of La0.7Sr0.3-xAgxMnO3 (x = 0.05, 0.25) have been measured at room temperature (<Tc) over frequency interval 1KHz to 15MHz and in presence of magnetic field up to 4KOe. The field dependence of relative change in resistance is small in KHz region but increases strongly for higher frequency of excitation. The maximum value of relative change in resistance at H =4KOe was found to be around 70% at 15MHz frequency. On the contrary the corresponding change in reactance has less frequency sensitivity and the maximum occurs at 1MHz frequency. The magneto-impedance is negative for all frequencies. The 'normalized magneto-impedance' as defined by [Z(H)-Z(0)]/[Z(0)-Z(4K)] when plotted against scaled field H/H1/2 is found to be frequency independent ; H1/2 is the field where 'normalized magneto-impedance' is reduced to half its maximum. A phenomenological formula for magneto-impedance Z (H) in ferromagnetic material is proposed based on Pade approximant. The formula for Z (H) predicts the scaled behavior of 'normalized magneto-impedance'.

Model of the Interplay of Band J-T Effect with Magnetic Order Mediated by Exchange Interaction

A model calculation is presented with the aim to study the interplay between magnetic and structural transitions. The model consists of an orbitally doubly degenerate conduction band and a periodic array of local moments. The band electrons interact with the local spins via the s-f interaction. The interaction of the band electrons with phonons is introduced by including band Jahn-Teller (J-T) interaction. The model Hamiltonian, including the above terms, is solved for the single particle Greens function. In doing this an ansatz for selfenergy of electrons, which was developed earlier has been utilized. The quasiparticle density of states (QDOS) and hence the orbital populations are calculated treating the ferromagnetism of local moments in the mean field approximation. The critical value of electron-phonon interaction ($G$) for the appearance of the band J-T distortion is higher in the ferromagnetic state. The strain appears at a critical temperature ($T_s$) when $G$ is greater than the critical value. The onset of ferromagnetism at $T_C$ ($<T_s$) arrests the growth of the strain. It is concluded that the magnetization hinders the structural transition. The quasiparticle density of states are presented to interpret these results.

Stress - and Magneto-Impedance in Co71-xFexCr7Si8B14 (x = 0, 2) amorphous ribbons

Systematic measurements of stress impedance (SI) and magneto-impedance (MI) have been carried out using Co-rich amorphous ribbons of nominal composition Co71-xFexCr7Si8B14 (x = 0, 2) at various excitation frequencies and bias fields and at room temperature. The impedance, Z, for both the samples was found to be very sensitive functions of applied tensile stress (up to 100MPa) exhibiting a maximum SI ratio as much as 80% at low frequency ~ 0.1MHz. The nature of variation of impedance, Z, changes with the excitation frequency especially at higher frequencies in MHz region where it exhibits a peak. Magnetization measurements were also performed to observe the effects of applied stress and magnetization decreases with the application of stress confirming the negative magnetostriction co-efficient of both the samples. Both the samples exhibited negative magneto-impedance when the variation of Z is observed with the applied bias magnetic field, H. Maximum MI ratio as large as 99% has been observed for both the samples at low fields ~ 27Oe. The impedance as functions of applied magnetic field, Z(H), decreases with the application of stress thus making the MI curves broader. Based on the electromagnetic screening and magnetization dynamics and incorporating the Gilbert and the Bloch-Bloembergen damping and stress dependent anisotropy, the SI has been calculated and is found to describe well the stress and field dependence of impedance of the two samples.

Simulation of stress-impedance effects in low magnetostrictive films

A theoretical study of stress-impedance effect based on the solution of Landau-Lifsitz-Gilbert equation has been carried out. The results show that stress impedance effects depend largely on several extrinsic (external bias field, external frequency) and intrinsic (orientation and magnitude of uniaxial anisotropy, damping) parameters.

Excitation Amplitude Dependence of Low Frequency Magneto-impedance of Amorphous Fe73.5Nb3Cu1Si13.5B9 Ribbon

Magneto-impedance (MI) of soft ferromagnetic materials is a sensitive function of the amplitude and frequency of exciting a.c magnetic field. MI (Z) of amorphous ferromagnetic ribbon of nominal composition Fe73.5Nb3 Cu1 Si13.5 B9 is measured at different excitation currents with frequency ranging from 30kHz to 120KHz The excitation (a.c) and biasing (d.c) magnetic fields Hdc are parallel to ribbon axis. At zero dc fields, Z exhibits non-linear dependence on excitation amplitude whereas at higher d.c fields (9Oe) Z is nearly independent of excitation amplitude. The impedance is maximum at zero bias field and sharply decreases as Hdc increases and almost zero hysterisis has been observed as Hdc is scanned. The maximum relative change of impedance (Z(H)-Z(H=0))/Z(H=0) is found to increase from nearly 45 to 60 percent when the excitation fields goes up from 14A/m to 140A/m. The large MI is associated with screening of electromagnetic field by magnetization induced by exciting ac field.

An Inexpensive Arterial Pressure Wave Sensor and its application in different physiological condition

Arterial Blood Pressure wave monitoring is considered to be important in assessment of cardiovascular system. We developed a novel pulse wave detection system using low frequency specific piezoelectric material as pressure wave sensor. The transducer detects the periodic change in the arterial wall diameter produced by pressure wave and the amplified signal after integration represents the pressure wave. The signal before integration is proportional to the rate of change of pressure wave and it not only reproduces the pressure waveform faithfully, but also its sharper nature helps to reliably detect the heart period variability (HPV). We have studied the position-specific (e.g. over carotid or radial artery) nature of change of this pulse wave signal (shape and amplitude) and also the changes at different physiological states.

Effect of strain on the transport properties of the manganite systems

The effect of strain on the resistivity and thermopower of ferromagnetic manganites has been examined based on the model that incorporates the electron-lattice interaction through the Jahn-Teller effect and an effective hopping determined by nearest neighbour spin-spin correlation of t2g electrons. The metal insulator transition temperature associated with resistivity decreases with increase in strain. In the presence of large strain the system remains in the semiconducting state. Thermopower (S) is positive and increasing function of strain and it exhibits a maximum with temperature. The temperature where maximum of S appears, shifts towards higher (lower) value with in the presence of magnetic field (strain). A large magneto-thermopower that depends on strain is obtained around metal-insulator transition.

Pseudogap and its influence on normal and superconducting states of cuprates

A model incorporating simultaneous superconducting and lattice instabilities has been studied in detail to estimate the nature of coupling and inter-play between them. The phase diagram is obtained in the temperature-filling plane at different values of the parameters of the model. It is found that a pseudogap develops in the distorted phase that inhibits the appearance of the superconducting transition. The superconducting instability is strongest for the regime of filling where the van Hove singularity in the 2D density of states is close to the chemical potential. The pseudogap, developed in the distorted phase, is a function of temperature via the temperature dependence of the distortion itself. Transport properties, namely resistivity and thermopower are found to be strongly dependent on the variations of the pseudogap.

Coexistence of Band Jahn Teller Distortion and superconductivity in correlated systems

The co-existence of band Jahn-Teller (BJT) effect with superconductivity (SC) is studied for correlated systems, with orbitally degenerate bands using a simple model. The Hubbard model for a doubly degenerate orbital with the on-site intraorbital Coulomb repulsion treated in the slave boson formalism and the interorbital Coulomb repulsion treated in the Hartree-Fock mean field approximation, describes the correlated system. The model further incorporates the BJT interaction and a pairing term to account for the lattice distortion and superconductivity respectively. It is found that structural distortion tends to suppress superconductivity and when SC sets in at low temperatures, the growth of the lattice distortion is arrested. The phase diagram comprising of the SC and structural transition temperatures $T_c$ and $T_s$ versus the dopant concentration $δ$ reveals that the highest obtainable $T_c$ for an optimum doping is limited by structural transition. The dependence of the occupation probabilities of the different bands as well as the density of states (DOS) in the distorted-superconducting phase, on electron correlation has been discussed.
