NvDEx-100 Conceptual Design Report

Observing nuclear neutrinoless double beta (0vbb) decay would be a revolutionary result in particle physics. Observing such a decay would prove that the neutrinos are their own antiparticles, help to study the absolute mass of neutrinos, explore the origin of their mass, and may explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in our universe by lepton number violation. We propose developing a time projection chamber (TPC) using high-pressure 82SeF6 gas and top-metal silicon sensors for read-out in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 82Se, called the NvDEx experiment. Besides being located at CJPL with the world's thickest rock shielding, NvDEx combines the advantages of the high Qbb (2.996 MeV) of 82Se and the TPC's ability to distinguish signal and background events using their different topological characteristics. This makes NvDEx unique, with great potential for low-background and high-sensitivity 0vbb searches. NvDEx-100, a NvDEx experiment phase with 100 kg of SeF6 gas, is being built, with plans to complete installation at CJPL by 2025. This report introduces 0vbb physics, the NvDEx concept and its advantages, and the schematic design of NvDEx-100, its subsystems, and background and sensitivity estimation.

Microscopic study of K-Selection Rule Violation in $^{182}$W K=10$^+$ Isomer Decay

In this paper we study the microscopic mechanism for the retarded decay of K-isomers to lower K bands. We do angular momentum projection from suitable intrinsic states. The retardation arises from poor overlap between the low K and high K bands in the integral over Euler angles. Deformed HF and angular momentum projection calculations are done for the decay of the $K=10^+$ isomer band to the ground band of $^{182}W$. K-mixing is unimportant and the K quantum numbers of the bands are quite good. There is significant difference in the reduced matrix elements of transition operators in our formalism and that in the rotational model. Angular momentum projection gives J-selection rule but there is no K selection rule for reduced matrix elements of electromagnetic multipole operators. Thus, E2 and M1 transitions from the K isomer to the ground band of $^{182}W$ are finite but retarded in angular momentum projection theory, as in experiments. This provides a theoretical basis for the study of K-isomers and their decay modes. Quantitative results are presented. The microscopic model gives J-selection rule and angular momentum conservation for combined matter and radiation systems.

Systematic study of high-K isomers in the midshell Gd and Dy nuclei

High-K isomers are well known in the rare-earth region and provide unique access to the high spin structures of the nuclei. With the current interest in the study of neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei at Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facilities, we present here theoretical results of the band structures of neutron-rich Gd and Dy nuclei, including the high K-isomers. Apart from the already known K-isomers, we predict some more K-isomers and these are suggested for future studies at RIB facilities. Self-consistent Deformed Hartree-Fock and Angular Momentum Projection theories are used to get the intrinsic structures, band-spectra and electromagnetic transitions probabilities of the ground band as well as bands based on isomers.

Isospin-symmetry breaking in superallowed Fermi beta-decay due to isospin-nonconserving forces

We investigate isospin-symmetry breaking effects in the sd-shell region with large-scale shell-model calculations, aiming to understand the recent anomalies observed in superallowed Fermi beta-decay. We begin with calculations of Coulomb displacement energies (CDE's) and triplet displacement energies (TDE's) by adding the T=1,J=0 isospin nonconserving (INC) interaction into the usual isospin-invariant Hamiltonian. It is found that CDE's and TDE's can be systematically described with high accuracy. A total number of 122 one- and two-proton separation energies are predicted accordingly, and locations of the proton drip-line and candidates for proton-emitters are thereby suggested. However, attempt to explain the anomalies in the superallowed Fermi beta-decay fails because these well-fitted T=1,J=0 INC interactions are found no effects on the nuclear matrix elements. It is demonstrated that the observed large isospin-breaking correction in the 32Cl beta-decay, the large isospin-mixing in the 31Cl beta-decay, and the small isospin-mixing in the 23Al beta-decay can be consistently understood by introducing additional T=1,J=2 INC interactions related to the s1/2 orbit.

Preliminary study of feasibility of an experiment looking for excited state double beta transitions in tin

An attempt to study the feasibility of a new experiment to search for double beta decay in $^{112}$Sn and $^{124}$Sn was carried out by using ultra-low background HPGe detector (244 cm$^{3}$) inside the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN (Italy). A small sample of natural Sn was examined for 2367.5 h. The radioactive contamination of the sample has been estimated. The data has also been considered to calculate the present sensitivity for the proposed search; half-life limits $\sim$ $10^{17} - 10^{18}$ years for $β^{+}$EC and EC-EC processes in $^{112}$Sn and $\sim$ $10^{18}$ years for $β^{-}β^{-}$ transition in $^{124}$Sn were measured. In the last section of the paper the enhancement of the sensitivity for a proposed experiment with larger mass to reach theoretically estimated values of half-lives is discussed.

Study of Energy Spectra and Electromagnetic moments of Double Beta Decay Nuclei in Deformed Hartree-Fock Model

Spectroscopy of nuclei in the mass range A=76 to A=130, participating in double beta decay processes are studied in the framework of the self-consistent deformed Hartree-Fock (HF) and angular momentum (J) projection model. Spectra of ground bands have been studied and compared with available experimental results for even-even parent and daughter as well as for intermediate odd-odd nuclei. To test the reliability of the wave functions we have also calculated the reduced E2 transition matrix elements, electric quadrupole moments and magnetic dipole moments for these nuclei. The calculated results are compared with the experimental findings and substantial agreement is achieved.

Rotational Bands and Electromagnetic Transitions of some even-even Neodymium Nuclei in J-Projected Hartree-Fock Model

Rotational structures of even-even $^{148-160}$Nd nuclei are studied with the self-consistent deformed Hartree-Fock (HF) and angular momentum (J) projection model. Spectra of ground band, recently observed $K=4^{-}$, $K=5^{-}$ and a few more excited, positive and negative parity bands have been studied upto high spin values. Apart from these detailed electromagnetic properties (like E2, M1 matrix elements) of all the bands have been obtained. There is substantial agreement between our model calculations and available experimental data. Predictions are made about the band structures and electromagnetic properties of these nuclei. Some 4-qasiparticle K-isomeric bands and their electromagnetic properties are predicted.
