Double superconducting transition and low-temperature specific heat study of Pr(Os$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_4$Sb$_{12}$

The double superconducting transition in PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$, first observed in specific heat $C(T)$ measurements of single crystal samples, is the subject of an in-depth study. The double superconducting transitions of a batch of single crystals were measured before and after they were annealed for 5 days at $500^{\circ}$C, with no observed change. $C(T)$ measurements near $T_c$ for PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ in several magnetic fields are also presented, detailing the evolution of the double transition up to 1 T. Samples of Pr(Os$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_4$Sb$_{12}$ with $0.01 \leq x \leq 0.04$ also appear to display a double superconducting transition in specific heat. In addition, samples with the smallest Ru concentration measured ($x=0.01$) may even display a different type of superconductivity than pure PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ ($x=0$).

Microwave Spectroscopy of PrOs_4Sb_12: Josephson-Coupled Two-Band Superconductivity and Itinerant f Electrons

We report microwave surface impedance measurements made on a single crystal of PrOs_4Sb_12 across the frequency range 0.5 to 21 GHz. The penetration depth data provide clear thermodynamic evidence for superconductivity arising in two bands coupled by Josephson pair-tunneling, indicating two order parameters with the same symmetry. Detailed conductivity spectra obtained using high-resolution bolometry confirm this picture and extend it, revealing the itinerant nature of the Pr f electrons through the observation of quasiparticles with heavily renormalized mass.

Scattering of p$μ$ muonic atoms in solid hydrogen

We present the results of experimental and theoretical study of the scattering of low energy p$μ$ atoms in solid hydrogen cooled to 3 K. The resulting emission of low energy p$μ$ atoms from the hydrogen layer into the adjacent vacuum was much higher than that predicted by calculations which ignored the solid nature of the hydrogen. New differential scattering cross sections have been calculated for the collisions of p$μ$ atoms on solid hydrogen to acount for its quantum crystalline nature. Analysis of the experimental data performed using such cross sections shows the important role of the coherent scattering in p$μ$ atom diffusion. For p$μ$ energies lower than the Bragg cutoff limit (2 meV) the elastic Bragg scattering vanishes which makes the total scattering cross section fall by several orders of magnitude, and thus the hydrogen target becomes transparent allowing the emission of cold p$μ$ atoms to occur.

Neutron beam test of CsI crystal for dark matter search

We have studied the response of Tl-doped and Na-doped CsI crystals to nuclear recoils and $γ$'s below 10 keV. The response of CsI crystals to nuclear recoil was studied with mono-energetic neutrons produced by the $^3$H(p,n)$^3$He reaction. This was compared to the response to Compton electrons scattered by 662 keV $γ$-ray. Pulse shape discrimination between the response to these $γ$'s and nuclear recoils was studied, and quality factors were estimated. The quenching factors for nuclear recoils were derived for both CsI(Na) and CsI(Tl) crystals.

Resonant Scattering of Muonic Hydrogen Atoms and Dynamics of Muonic Molecular Complex

Resonant scattering of muonic hydrogen atoms via back decay of molecular complex, a key process in the understanding of epithermal muonic molecular formation, is analyzed. The limitations of the effective rate approximation are discussed and the importance of the explicit treatment of the back decay is stressed. An expression of the energy distribution for the back-decayed atoms is given.

Measurement of the Resonant $dμt$ Molecular Formation Rate in Solid HD

Measurements of muon-catalyzed dt fusion ($dμt \to ^4He+n+μ^-$) in solid HD have been performed. The theory describing the energy dependent resonant molecular formation rate for the reaction $μt$ + HD $\to [(dμt)pee]^*$ is compared to experimental results in a pure solid HD target. Constraints on the rates are inferred through the use of a Monte Carlo model developed specifically for the experiment. From the time-of- flight analysis of fusion events in 16 and 37 $μg\cdot cm^{-2}$ targets, an average formation rate consistent with 0.897$\pm$(0.046)$_{stat}\pm$ (0.166)$_{syst}$ times the theoretical prediction was obtained.

Time-of-Flight Spectroscopy of Muonic Hydrogen Atoms and Molecules

Studies of muonic hydrogen atoms and molecules have been performed traditionally in bulk targets of gas, liquid or solid. At TRIUMF, Canada's meson facility, we have developed a new type of target system using multilayer thin films of solid hydrogen, which provides a beam of muonic hydrogen atoms in vacuum. Using the time-of-flight of the muonic atoms, the energy-dependent information of muonic reactions are obtained in direct manner. We discuss some unique measurements enabled by the new technique, with emphasis on processes relevant to muon catalyzed fusion.

Using Thin Film Targets for Muonic Atoms and Muon Catalyzed Fusion Studies

Studies of muonic atoms and muon catalyzed fusion have been conventionally done in a bulk target of gas, liquid or solid hydrogen isotopes. The use of thin film targets developed at TRIUMF have notable advantages in tackling some of the most important questions in the field, which could be further exploited at future high intensity muon sources. We review the technique of the thin film method with emphasis on recent results and a future proposal.

Resonant Formation of $dμt$ Molecules in Deuterium: An Atomic Beam Measurement of Muon Catalyzed dt Fusion

Resonant formation of $dμt$ molecules in collisions of muonic tritium ($μt$) on D$_2$ was investigated using a beam of $μt$ atoms, demonstrating a new direct approach in muon catalyzed fusion studies. Strong epithermal resonances in $dμt$ formation were directly revealed for the first time. From the time-of-flight analysis of $2036\pm 116$ $dt$ fusion events, a formation rate consistent with $0.73\pm (0.16)_{meas} \pm (0.09)_{model}$ times the theoretical prediction was obtained. For the largest peak at a resonance energy of $0.423 \pm 0.037$ eV, this corresponds to a rate of $(7.1 \pm 1.8) \times 10^9$ s$^{-1}$, more than an order of magnitude larger than those at low energies.

A fast programmable trigger for isolated cluster counting in the BELLE experiment

We have developed a fast programmable trigger processor board based on a field programmable gate array and a complex programmable logic device for use in the BELLE experiment. The trigger board accommodates 144 ECL input signals, 2 NIM input signals, 24 ECL output signals, and the VME bus specification. An asynchronous trigger logic for counting isolated clusters is used. We have obtained trigger latency of 50 ns with a full access to input and output signals via a VME interface. The trigger logic can be modified at any time depending on the experimental conditions.

Test of CsI(Tl) crystals for the Dark Matter Search

Searches for weakly interacting massive particles(WIMP) can be based on the dete ction of nuclear recoil energy in CsI(Tl) crystals. We demonstrate that low energy gamma rays down to few keV is detected with CsI(Tl) crystal detector. A clear peak at 6 keV is observed using X-ray source. Good energy resolution and linearity have been achieved down to X-ray region. In addition, we also show that alpha particles and gamma rays can be clearly separated using the different time characteristics of the crystal.

Soft Pomeron Intercept

We show that simple Regge pole fits to the imaginary and the real part of the elastic amplitude in pp and pbar p collisions give a value of 1.096+0.012-0.009 for the pomeron intercept. Preliminary results of the new global fits to all hadron total cross sections as well as to the proton structure function at low x and low Q2 are briefly mentioned.

Muon Catalyzed Fusion in 3 K Solid Deuterium

Muon catalyzed fusion in deuterium has traditionally been studied in gaseous and liquid targets. The TRIUMF solid-hydrogen-layer target system has been used to study the fusion reaction rates in the solid phase of D_2 at a target temperature of 3 K. Products of two distinct branches of the reaction were observed; neutrons by a liquid organic scintillator, and protons by a silicon detector located inside the target system. The effective molecular formation rate from the upper hyperfine state of $μd$ and the hyperfine transition rate have been measured: $\tildeλ_(3/2)=2.71(7)_{stat.}(32)_{syst.} μ/s$, and $\tildeλ_{(3/2)(1/2)} =34.2(8)_{stat.}(1)_{syst.} μ/s$. The molecular formation rate is consistent with other recent measurements, but not with the theory for isolated molecules. The discrepancy may be due to incomplete thermalization, an effect which was investigated by Monte Carlo calculations. Information on branching ratio parameters for the s and p wave d+d nuclear interaction has been extracted.

Characterization of Solidified Gas Thin Film Targets via Alpha Particle Energy Loss

A method is reported for measuring the thickness and uniformity of thin films of solidified gas targets. The energy of alpha particles traversing the film is measured and the energy loss is converted to thickness using the stopping power. The uniformity is determined by measuring the thickness at different positions with an array of sources. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to study the film deposition mechanism. Thickness calibrations for a TRIUMF solid hydrogen target system are presented.

Bounds on the Soft Pomeron Intercept

The Donnachie-Landshoff fit of total cross sections has now become a standard reference for models of total, elastic and diffractive cross-sections. Adopting their philosophy that simple-pole exchanges should account for all data to present energies, we assess the uncertainties on their fits. Our best estimate for the pomeron intercept is $1.096^{+0.012}_{-0.009}$, but several models have a good chi square for intercepts in the range [1.07,1.11].
