Quasi-periodic oscillations in superfluid magnetars

We study the time-evolution of axisymmetric oscillations of superfluid magnetars with a poloidal magnetic field and an elastic crust, working in Newtonian gravity. Extending earlier models, we study the effects of composition gradients and entrainment on the magneto-elastic wave spectrum and on the potential identification of the observed quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs). We use two-fluid polytropic equations of state to construct our stellar models, which mimic realistic composition gradient configurations. The basic features of the axial axisymmetric spectrum of normal fluid stars are reproduced by our results and in addition we find several magneto-elastic waves with a mixed character. In the core, these oscillations mimic the shear mode pattern of the crust as a result of the strong dynamical coupling between these two regions. Incorporating the most recent entrainment configurations in our models, we find that they have a double effect on the spectrum: the magnetic oscillations of the core have a frequency enhancement, while the mixed magneto-elastic waves originating in the crust are moved towards the frequencies of the single-fluid case. The distribution of lower-frequency magneto-elastic oscillations for our models is qualitatively similar to the observed magnetar QPOs with $ν< 155 $Hz. \emph{In particular, some of these QPOs could represent mixed magneto-elastic oscillations with frequencies not greatly different from the crustal modes of an unmagnetised star.} We find that many QPOs could even be accounted for using a model with a relatively weak polar field of $B_{p} \simeq 3\cdot 10^{14}$G, because of the superfluid enhancement of magnetic oscillations. Finally, we discuss the possible identification of 625 and 1837~Hz QPOs either with non-axisymmetric modes or with high-frequency axisymmetric QPOs excited by crustal mode overtones.

The inside-out view on neutron star magnetospheres

We construct hydromagnetic neutron star equilibria which allow for a non-zero electric current distribution in the exterior. The novelty of our models is that the neutron star's interior field is in equilibrium with its magnetosphere, thus bridging the gap between previous work in this area which either solves for the interior assuming a vacuum exterior or solves for the magnetosphere without modelling the star itself. We consider only non-rotating stars in this work, so our solutions are most immediately applicable to slowly-rotating systems such as magnetars. Nonetheless, we demonstrate that magnetospheres qualitatively resembling those expected for both magnetars and pulsars are possible within our framework. The "inside-out" approach taken in this paper should be more generally applicable to rotating neutron stars, where the interior and exterior regions are again not independent but evolve together.

Magnetic fields in superconducting neutron stars

The interior of a neutron star is likely to be predominantly a mixture of superfluid neutrons and superconducting protons. This results in the quantisation of the star's magnetic field into an array of thin fluxtubes, producing a macroscopic force very different from the Lorentz force of normal matter. We show that in an axisymmetric superconducting equilibrium the behaviour of a magnetic field is governed by a single differential equation. Solving this, we present the first self-consistent superconducting neutron star equilibria with poloidal and mixed poloidal-toroidal fields, also giving the first quantitative results for the corresponding magnetically-induced distortions to the star. The poloidal component is dominant in all our configurations. We suggest that the transition from normal to superconducting matter in a young neutron star may cause a large-scale field rearrangement.

Stratification, superfluidity and magnetar QPOs

The violent giant flares of magnetars excite QPOs which persist for hundreds of seconds, as seen in the X-ray tail following the initial burst. Recent studies, based on single-fluid barotropic magnetar models, have suggested that the lower-frequency QPOs correspond to magneto-elastic oscillations of the star. The higher frequencies, however, in particular the strong 625 Hz peak, have proved harder to explain, except as high mode multipoles. In this work we study the time evolutions of non-axisymmetric oscillations of two-fluid Newtonian magnetars with no crust. We consider models with superfluid neutrons and normal protons, and poloidal and toroidal background field configurations. We show that multi-fluid physics (composition-gradient stratification, entrainment) tends to increase Alfven mode frequencies significantly from their values in a single-fluid barotropic model. The higher-frequency magnetar QPOs may then be naturally interpreted as Alfven oscillations of the multi-fluid stellar core. The lower-frequency QPOs are less easily explained within our purely fluid core model, but we discuss the possibility that these are crustal modes.

Are there any stable magnetic fields in barotropic stars?

We construct barotropic stellar equilibria, containing magnetic fields with both poloidal and toroidal field components. We extend earlier results by exploring the effect of different magnetic field and current distributions. Our results suggest that the boundary treatment plays a major role in whether the poloidal or toroidal field component is globally dominant. Using time evolutions we provide the first stability test for mixed poloidal-toroidal fields in barotropic stars, finding that all these fields suffer instabilities due to one of the field components: these are localised around the pole for toroidal-dominated equilibria and in the closed-field line region for poloidal-dominated equilibria. Rotation provides only partial stabilisation. There appears to be very limited scope for the existence of stable magnetic fields in barotropic stars. We discuss what additional physics from real stars may allow for stable fields.

Magnetic neutron star equilibria with stratification and type-II superconductivity

We construct two-fluid equilibrium configurations for neutron stars with magnetic fields, using a self-consistent and nonlinear numerical approach. The two-fluid approach - likely to be valid for large regions of all but the youngest NSs - provides us with a straightforward way to introduce stratification and allows for more realistic models than the ubiquitous barotropic assumption. In all our models the neutrons are modelled as a superfluid, whilst for the protons we consider two cases: one where they are a normal fluid and another where they form a type-II superconductor. We consider a variety of field configurations in the normal-proton case and purely toroidal fields in the superconducting case. We find that stratification allows for a stronger toroidal component in mixed-field configurations, though the poloidal component remains the largest in all our models. We provide quantitative results for magnetic ellipticities of NSs, both in the normal- and superconducting-proton cases.

Instabilities in neutron stars with toroidal magnetic fields

We study $m=1$ oscillations and instabilities of magnetised neutron stars, by numerical time-evolution of linear perturbations of the system. The background stars are stationary equilibrium configurations with purely toroidal magnetic fields. We find that an $m=1$ instability of toroidal magnetic fields, already known from local analyses, may also be found in our relatively low-resolution global study. We present quantitative results for the instability growth rate and its suppression by rotation. The instability is discussed as a possible trigger mechanism for Soft Gamma Repeater (SGR) flares. Although our primary focus is evolutions of magnetised stars, we also consider perturbations about unmagnetised background stars in order to study $m=1$ inertial modes. We track these modes up to break-up frequency, extending known slow-rotation results.

Oscillations and instabilities in neutron stars with poloidal magnetic fields

We study the time evolution of non-axisymmetric linear perturbations of a rotating magnetised neutron star, whose magnetic field is multipolar and purely poloidal. The background stellar configurations are generated self-consistently, allowing for distortions to the density distribution from rotational and magnetic forces. We find that the behaviour of axial-led perturbations is dominated by an instability generic to poloidal fields, which is localised around the `neutral line' where the background field vanishes. Rotation acts to reduce the effect of this instability. Polar-led perturbations do not appear to be unstable and in this case we find global Alfvén modes, whose restoring force is the magnetic field. In a rotating magnetised star there are no pure Alfvén modes or pure inertial modes, but hybrids of these. We discuss the nature of magnetic instabilities and oscillations in magnetars and pulsars, finding the dominant Alfvén mode has a frequency comparable with observed magnetar QPOs.

Oscillations of rotating magnetised neutron stars with purely toroidal magnetic fields

We investigate the oscillation spectrum of rotating Newtonian neutron stars endowed with purely toroidal magnetic fields, using a time evolution code to evolve linear perturbations in the Cowling approximation. The background star is generated by numerically solving the MHD equilibrium equations and may be nonspherical by virtue of both rotation and magnetic effects; hence our perturbations and background are fully consistent. Whilst the background field is purely toroidal, the perturbed field is mixed poloidal-toroidal. From Fourier analysis of the perturbations we are able to identify a number of magnetically-restored Alfvén (or $a$-) modes. We show that in a rotating star pure inertial and $a$-modes are replaced by hybrid magneto-inertial modes, which reduce to $a$-modes in the nonrotating limit and inertial modes in the nonmagnetic limit. We show that the $r$-mode instability is suppressed by magnetic fields in sufficiently slowly rotating stars. In addition, we determine magnetic frequency shifts in the $f$-mode. We discuss the astrophysical relevance of our results, in particular for magnetar oscillations.

Magnetic fields in axisymmetric neutron stars

We derive general equations for axisymmetric Newtonian MHD and use these as the basis of a code for calculating equilibrium configurations of rotating magnetised neutron stars in a stationary state. We investigate the field configurations that result from our formalism, which include purely poloidal, purely toroidal and mixed fields. For the mixed-field formalism the toroidal component appears to be bounded at less than 7%. We calculate distortions induced both by magnetic fields and by rotation. From our non-linear work we are able to look at the realm of validity of perturbative work: we find for our results that perturbative-regime formulae for magnetic distortions agree to within 10% of the nonlinear results if the ellipticity is less than 0.15 or the average field strength is less than $10^{17}$ G. We also consider how magnetised equilibrium structures vary for different polytropic indices.
