Phase transitions in Lu$_2$Ir$_3$Si$_5$

We report the results of our investigations on a polycrystalline sample of Lu$_2$Ir$_3$Si$_5$ which crystallizes in the U$_2$Co$_3$Si$_5$ type structure (Ibam). These investigations comprise powder X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and high temperature (120-300 K) heat capacity studies. Our results reveal that the sample undergoes a superconducting transition below 3.5 K. It also undergoes a first order phase transition between 150-250 K as revealed by an upturn in the resistivity, a diasmagnetic drop in the magnetic susceptibility and a large anomaly (20-30 J/mol K) in the specific heat data. We observe a huge thermal hysteresis of almost 45 K between the cooling and warming data across this high temperature transition in all our measurements. Low temperature X-ray diffraction measurements at 87 K reveals that the compound undergoes a structural change at the high temperature transition. Resistivity data taken in repeated cooling and warming cycles indicate that at the high temperature transition, the system goes into a highly metastable state and successive heating/cooling curves are found to lie above the previous one and the resistance keeps increasing with every thermal cycle. The room temperature resistance of a thermaly cycled piece of the sample decays exponentialy with time with a decay time constant estimated to be about 10$^4$ secs. The anomaly (upturn) in the resistivity and the large drop (almost 45%) in the susceptibility across the high temperature transition suggest that the observed structural change is accompanied or induced by an electronic transition.

Observation of spin glass state in weakly ferromagnetic Sr$_2$FeCoO$_6$ double perovskite

We report the observation of spin glass state in the double perovskite oxide Sr$_{2}$FeCoO$_{6}$ prepared through sol-gel technique. Initial structural studies using x rays reveal that the compound crystallizes in tetragonal $I 4/m$ structure with lattice parameters, $a$ = 5.4609(2) Åand $c$ = 7.7113(7) Å. The temperature dependent powder x ray studies reveal no structural phase transition in the temperature range 10 -- 300 K. However, the unit cell volume shows an anomaly coinciding with the magnetic transition temperature thereby suggesting a close connection between lattice and magnetism. Neutron diffraction studies and subsequent bond valence sums analysis show that in Sr$_{2}$FeCoO$_{6}$, the $B$ site is randomly occupied by Fe and Co in the mixed valence states of Fe$^{3+}$/Fe$^{4+}$ and Co$^{3+}$/Co$^{4+}$. The random occupancy and mixed valence sets the stage for inhomogeneous magnetic exchange interactions and in turn, for the spin glass like state in this double perovskite which is observed as an irreversibility in temperature dependent dc magnetization at $T_f\sim$ 75 K. Thermal hysteresis observed in the magnetization profile of Sr$_{2}$FeCoO$_{6}$ is indicative of the mixed magnetic phases present. The dynamic magnetic susceptibility displays characteristic frequency dependence and confirms the spin glass nature of this material. Dynamical scaling analysis of $χ'(T)$ yields a critical temperature $T_{ct}$ = 75.14(8) K and an exponent $zν$ = 6.2(2) typical for spin glasses. The signature of presence of mixed magnetic interactions is obtained from the thermal hysteresis in magnetization of Sr$_{2}$FeCoO$_{6}$. Combining the neutron and magnetization results of Sr$_2$FeCoO$_6$, we deduce the spin states of Fe to be in low spin while that of Co to be in low spin and intermediate spin.

Magnetic phases evolution in the LaMn1-xFexO3+y system

We have investigated the crystal structure and magnetic properties for polycrystalline samples of LaMn1-xFexO3+y, in the whole range x=0.0 to x=1.0, prepared by solid state reaction in air. All samples show the ORT-2 orthorhombic structure that suppresses the Jahn-Teller distortion, thus favoring a ferromagnetic (FM) superexchange (SE) interaction between Mn^{3+}-O-Mn^{3+}. For x=0.0 the oxygen excess (y ~ 0.09) produces vacancies in the La and Mn sites and generates a fraction around 18% of Mn^{4+} ions and 82% of the usual Mn^{3+} ions, with possible double exchange interaction between them. The Fe doping in this system is known to produce only stable Fe^{3+} ions. We find an evolution from a fairly strong FM phase with a Curie temperature T_{C} ~ 160 K, for x=0.0, to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with T_{N} = 790 K, for x=1.0, accompanied by clear signatures of a cluster-glass behavior. For intermediate Fe contents a mixed-phase state occurs, with a gradual decrease (increase) of the FM (AFM) phase, accompanied by a systematic transition broadening for 0.2 < x < 0.7. A model based on the expected exchange interaction among the various magnetic-ion types, accounts very well for the saturation-magnetization dependence on Fe doping.

Anomalous magnetic and transport properties of La(0.8-x)Eu(x)Sr0.2MnO3 (0.04 l.e. x l.e. 0.36) compounds

Anomalous magnetic and transport properties observed in the La0.8-xEuxSr0.2MnO3 (0.04 l.e x l.e. 0.36) compounds are presented in this paper. The Curie temperature (TC) decreases from 260 K for x = 0.04 to 188 K for x = 0.16 and surprisingly thereafter increases for higher Eu concentrations (x > 0.16) and becomes nearly constant ~230 K. Resistivity increases with Eu concentration up to x = 0.16 but decreases for higher Eu concentration (x > 0.16). In the magnetoresistance data, in addition to a peak corresponding to the insulator-metal transition at (TI-M1), a second peak is also observed at a relatively lower temperature, (TI-M2). Both TI-M1 and TI-M2 follow the same trend as TC. The unique variation of TC and magnetoresistance is explained on the basis of structure and disorder correlated to microscopic electronic phase segregation. The studies with the existing studies also point to the universibility of this consideration.

Magnetocaloric effect in R2Ti3Ge4 (R = Gd, Tb and Er) Compounds

Heat capacity of polycrystalline R2Ti3Ge4 (R = Gd, Tb and Er) compounds (Orthorhombic, Sm5Ge4-type, Space group Pnma) has been studied in the temperature range of 1.8 K to 300 K in various applied magnetic fields. The compounds with magnetic lanthanide elements show interesting low field magnetism intrigued by possible presence of competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions. The magnetocaloric effect in these compounds is estimated from the field dependent heat capacity data. The magnetic entropy change and the adiabatic temperature change in the vicinity of the magnetic transition are found to be significant.

Enhancement of flux pinning and high critical current density in graphite doped MgB2 superconductor

We report the synthesis and characterization of graphite (C) doped MgB2-xCx (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) samples. The crystal structure and microstructural characterization have been investigated by x-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis. The superconducting properties especially Jc and Hc2 have been measured by employing physical property measurement system. We found that the graphite doping affects the lattice parameters as well as the microstructure of MgB2 superconductor. In case of optimally doped (x=0.1) sample, the critical current density at 5K corresponds to 1.1 x 10^6 and 5.3 x 10^4 A/cm^2 for 3T and 5T fields respectively. The upper critical field has been enhanced nearly two times after doping. The flux pinning behavior has been investigated by flux pinning force density curve and it reveals that the flux pinning behaviour has improved significantly by doping. TEM micrographs show the graphite nanoparticles of size ~5-10 nm which are invariably present in MgB2 grains. These nanoparticles act as flux pinning centre and are responsible for enhancement of superconducting properties of MgB2.

Tuning the Competing magnetic interactions in RTiGe (R = Tb, Er) Compounds and tailoring the Magnetocaloric effect

The tetragonal layered compounds TbTiGe and ErTiGe order antiferromagnetically at 276 K and 39 K, respectively. Partial substitution of Mo for Ti in these two compounds modifies the magnetic interactions giving rise to a ferromagnetic ground state which results in an enhanced magnetocaloric effect. The magnetic entropy change in ErTi0.85Mo0.15Ge for a magnetic field change of 5 T is ~10.5 J/kg/K against ~0.8 J/kg/K for ErTiGe in the vicinity of the magnetic transition. Thus, magnetocaloric properties of such layered materials may be tunable by suitable chemical substitutions.

Magnetization and heat capacity studies of double perovskite compounds Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6

Here we report the magnetic and heat capacity studies of the double perovskite com-pounds Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6. Antiferromagnetic transitions are inferred at 54 K and 47 K in Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6, respectively in the magnetization measure-ments. Heat capacity measurements show large jumps at the corresponding temperatures and confirm the bulk magnetic ordering. Both the measurements provide clear indication of the ordering of the rare earth moments also along with the Ruthenium moments. How-ever, the heat capacity results suggest that the ordering of rare earth magnetic moments is spread over a large temperature range and is affected by a large crystal field effect on Ru and rare earth ions. The anomaly observed in the magnetization measurements at 42 K (below the magnetic ordering) in Ba2SmRuO6 is discerned as a reorientation of Sm3+ moments

Magnetic, magneto-thermal and magneto-transport properties in SmMn2Si2-xGex compounds

The effect of Ge substitution for Si in SmMMn2Si2-xGex compounds has been studied. The Sm ordering temperature is found to be much larger in the compound with x=2, as compared to the compounds with x=0 and 1. The increase in the intra layer Mn-Mn distance is found to be responsible for this increase. Among these three compounds, SmMn2Ge2 is found to show re-entrant ferromagnetism at low temperatures. The magnetic contribution to the heat capacity has been found in all the three compounds. The splitting of the ground state multiplet has been estimated by fitting the magnetic part of the heat capacity data using the Schottky formula. The isothermal magnetic entropy change is found to remain the same for x=0 and 1, but decrease in the compound with x=2, though the nature of magnetic transition changes from second order to first order, as x is increased from 0 to 2. The electrical resistivity increases with Ge concentration. The excess resistivity in the antiferromagnetic region has been calculated.

Multiple magnetic transitions and magnetocaloric effect in Gd1-xSmxMn2Ge2 compounds

Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline samples of Gd1-xSmxMn2Ge2 have been studied. All the compounds except GdMn2Ge2 show re-entrant ferromagnetic behavior. Multiple magnetic transitions observed in these compounds are explained on the basis of the temperature dependences of the exchange strengths of the rare earth and Mn sublattices. Magnetocaloric effect is found to be positive at the re-entrant ferromagnetic transition, whereas it is negative at the antiferro-ferromagnetic transition. In SmMn2Ge2, the magnetic entropy change associated with the re-entrant transition is found to decrease with field, which is attributed to the admixture effect of the crystal field levels. The isothermal magnetic entropy change is found to decrease with increase in Sm concentration.

High critical current density and improved flux pinning in bulk MgB2 synthesized by Ag addition

In the present investigation, we report a systematic study of Ag admixing in MgB2 prepared by solid-state reaction at ambient pressure. All the samples in the present investigation have been subjected to structural/ microstructural characterization employing x-rays diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) techniques. The magnetization measurements were performed by physical property measurement system (PPMS). The TEM investigations reveal the formation of MgAg nanoparticles in Ag admixed samples. These nanoparticles may enhance critical current density due to their size (~5-20 nm) compatible with coherence length of MgB2 (~5-6 nm). In order to study the flux pinning effect of Ag admixing in MgB2, the evaluation of intragrain critical current density (Jc) has been carried out through magnetic measurements on the fine powdered version of the as synthesized samples. The optimum result on intragrain Jc is obtained for 10 at.% Ag admixed sample at 5K. This corresponds to 9.23x10^7 A/cm^2 in self-field,5.82x10^7 A/cm^2 at 1T,4.24 x10^6 A/cm^2 at 3.6T and 1.52x10^5 A/cm^2 at 5T. However, intragrain Jc values for MgB2 sample without Ag admixing are 2.59x10^6 A/cm^2,1.09x10^6A/cm^2,4.53x10^4 A/cm^2 and 2.91x10^3A/cm^2 at 5 K in self field, 1T, 3.6T and 5T respectively.. The high value of intragrain Jc for Ag admixed MgB2 superconductor has been attributed to the inclusion of MgAg nanoparticles into the crystal matrix of MgB2, which are capable of providing effective flux pinning centres. A feasible correlation between microstructural features and superconducting properties has been put forward.

Heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect in polycrystalline Gd1-xSmxMn2Si2

We report the magnetocaloric effect in terms of isothermal magnetic entropy change as well as adiabatic temperature change, calculated using the heat capacity data. Using the zero field heat capacity data, the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity has been estimated. The variations in the magnetocaloric behavior have been explained on the basis of the magnetic structure of these compounds. The refrigerant capacities have also been calculated for these compounds.

Swift-heavy-ion-irradiation-induced enhancement in electrical conductivity of chemical solution deposited La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 thin films

Epitaxial thin films of La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 manganite, deposited using Chemical Solution Deposition technique, were irradiated by 200 MeV Ag+15 ions with a maximum ion dose up to 1x10^12 ions/cm2. Temperature- and magnetic field-dependent resistivity measurements on all the films (before and after irradiation) reveal a sustained decrease in resistivity with increasing ion dose. A maximum dose of 1x10^12 ions/cm2 suppresses resistivity by factors of 3 and 10, at 330 K [insulator-metal (I-M) transition] and at 10 K, respectively. On the other hand, with increasing ion dose, the magnetoresistance (MR) enhances in the vicinity of I-M transition but decreases at low temperatures. These results, corroborated by surface morphology of films, suggest that the origin of such properties lies in the irradiation induced improved crystallinity and epitaxial orientation, enhanced connectivity between grains, and conglomeration of grains which result in better conductivity at grain boundaries.

Correlation between magnetism and magnetocaloric effect in RCo2-based Laves phase compounds

By virtue of the itinerant electron metamagnetism (IEM), the RCo2 compounds with R=Er, Ho and Dy are found to show first order magnetic transition at their ordering temperatures. The inherent instability of Co sublattice magnetism is responsible for the occurrence of IEM, which leads to interesting magnetic and related properties. The systematic studies of the variations in the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the RCo2-based compounds show that the magnetovolume effect plays a decisive role in determining the nature of magnetic transitions and hence the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in these compound. It is found that the spin fluctuations arising due to the magnetovolume effect reduce the strength of IEM in these compounds, which subsequently lead to a reduction in the MCE. Most of the substitutions at the Co site are found to result in a positive magnetovolume effect, leading to an initial increase in the ordering temperature. Application of pressure, on the other hand, causes a reduction in the ordering temperature due to the negative magnetovolume effect. A comparative study of the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of RCo2 compounds under various substitutions and applied pressure is presented. Analysis of the magnetization data using the Landau theory has shown that there is a strong correlation between the Landau coefficient (B) and the MCE. The variations seen in the order of magnetic transition and the MCE values seem to support the recent model proposed by Khmelevskyi and Mohn for the occurrence of IEM in RCo2 compounds.

Role of Fe substitution on the anomalous magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance behavior in Tb(Ni1-xFex)2 compounds

We report the magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance results obtained in Tb(Ni1-xFex)2 compounds with x=0, 0.025 and 0.05. Fe substitution leads to an increase in the ordering temperature from 36 K for x=0 to 124 K for x=0.05. Contrary to a single sharp MCE peak seen in TbNi2, the MCE peaks of the Fe substituted compounds are quite broad. We attribute the anomalous MCE behavior to the randomization of the Tb moments brought about by the Fe substitution. Magnetic and magnetoresistance results seem to corroborate this proposition. The present study also shows that the anomalous magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance behavior seen in the present compounds is similar to that of Ho(Ni,Fe)2 compounds.

Effect of Ge substitution for Si on the anomalous magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance properties of GdMn2Si2 compounds

The effect of Ge substitution on the magnetization, heat capacity, magnetocaloric effect and magnetoresistance of GdMn2Si2-xGex (x=0, 1, and 2) compounds has been studied. The magnetic transition associated with the Gd ordering is found to change from second order to first order on Ge substitution. Magnetic contributions to the total heat capacity and the entropy have been estimated. Magnetocaloric effect has been calculated in terms of adiabatic temperature change (deltaTad) as well as isothermal magnetic entropy change (deltaSM) using the heat capacity data. The temperature dependence of the magnetocaloric effect in all the three compounds have shown broad peaks. The maximum values of deltaSM and deltaTad for GdMn2Ge2 are found to be 5.9 J/kgK and 1.2 K, respectively. The magnetoresistance is found to be very large and positive with a maximum value of about 22% in the case of GdMn2Ge2. In the other two compounds also, the magnetoresistance is predominantly positive, except in the vicinity of the Gd ordering temperature. The anomalous nature of the magnetocaloric effect and the magnetoresistance has been attributed to the canted magnetic structure of these compounds.

Large magnetoresistance in intermetallic compounds R2Mn3Si5 (R = Tb, Dy and Ho)

Magnetization (M) and magnetoresistance (MR) measurements on polycrystalline R2Mn3Si5 (R = Tb, Dy and Ho) compounds (tetragonal, space group P4/mnc) have been carried out in the temperature range of 2 K-300 K, in various applied fields. Both, the rare earth and the Mn, are found to carry magnetic moments in these compounds. Mn has two sub-lattices (Mn1 and Mn2) that order magnetically at two different temperatures. Rare earth and Mn1 moments order ferromagnetically at TC1 whereas Mn2 is found to magnetically order at TC2 (TC1 = 89 K, 86 K, 78 K and TC2 = 18 K, 34 K, 16 K for R = Tb, Dy and Ho compounds, respectively). Magnetoresistance measurements reveal large negative MR values of about 50 % near TC2 at 9 T in all these compounds. This giant magnetoresistance is attributed to the spin-dependent scattering effects, competing exchange interactions and the layered structure of these compounds

Direct Correlation between 1/f-magneto-noise and magnetoresistance in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and (La0.5Pr0.2)Ba0.3MnO3 manganites

Temperature- and magnetic field-dependent electrical noise and electrical resistivity measurements were carried out on epitaxial thin films of a large bandwidth La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and a disordered intermediate bandwidth (La0.5Pr0.2)Ba0.3MnO3 manganite system. The power spectraldensity was dominated by 1/f-noise. This 1/f-noise was observed to follow the overall temperature dependence of the resistivity. Moreover, in these compounds the magneto-noise effect was found to be of nearly the same magnitude as the magnetoresistance. This direct correlation between magneto-noise and magnetoresistance suggests that the enhanced 1/f-noise has its origin in intrinsic charge-carrier density fluctuations.
