Low temperature synthesis, magnetic and magnetotransport properties of (La1-xLux)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (0 < x < 0.12) system

We have been able to synthesize Lu+3 substituted La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) by an auto-combustion method. Synthesis of this compound is not successful by conventional ceramic or other chemical methods. Magnetic and electrical transport properties of the Lu substituted LCMO [(La1-xLux)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (0 < x < 0.12)] system have been investigated and compared with those of the Y+3, Pr+3, Dy+3 and Tb+3 substituted LCMO systems. All the compounds show a ferromagnetic metal to paramagnetic insulator transition at TC. The tolerance factor reduces from 0.917 for x = 0 to 0.909 for x = 0.12 and for this range all are ferromagnetic metals indicating the dominance of the coupling between spins due to double exchange over the antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction. The transition temperatures and magnetization decrease as the Lu concentration increases. This is satisfactorily accounted for on the basis of transition from ferromagnetic at x = 0 to canted spin order for x > 0. All the samples show higher magnitude of MR compared to that in pure LCMO at 80 kOe field in the temperature range of 5 to 320K. A fairly high value of low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) of about 30% is obtained in all the samples at a field less than 5 kOe.

Possible Competition between superconductivity and magnetism in RuSr2Gd1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10-d (Ru-1222) Rutheno-cuprate compounds

The RuSr2Gd1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10-d (Ru-1222) compounds, with varying oxygen content, crystallize in a tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4/mmm). Resistance (R) versus temperature (T) measurements show that the air-annealed samples exhibit superconductivity with superconducting transition temperature (Tc) onset at around 32 K and R=0 at 3.5 K. On the other hand, the N2-annealed sample is semiconducting down to 2 K. Magneto-transport measurements on air-annealed sample in applied magnetic fields of 3 and 6 Tesla show a decrease in both Tc onset and TR=0. Magnetoresistance of up to 20% is observed in N2-annealed sample at 2 K and 3 T applied field. The DC magnetization data (M vs. T) reveal magnetic transitions (Tmag.) at 100 K and 106 K, respectively, for both air- and N2-annealed samples. Ferromagnetic components in the magnetization are observed for both samples at 5K and 20 K. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) seems to compete with the magnetic transition temperature (Tmag.). Our results suggest that the magnetic ordering temperature (Tmag.) of Ru moments in RuO6 octahedra may have direct influence/connection with the appearance of superconductivity in Cu-O2 planes of Ru-1222 compounds. Magneto-transport studies on (Pr1/3Sm2/3)2/3A1/3MnO3 (A = Ca, Sr and Ba) compounds

Magnetic and transport properties of (Pr1/3Sm2/3)2/3A1/3MnO3 (A = Ca, Sr and Ba) compounds, prepared by the citrate gel route, have been investigated. These compounds are found to crystallize in the orthorhombic structure. Charge ordering transport behavior is indicated only in Ca-substituted compound. The Sr- and Ba-substituted compounds show metal-insulator transition and semiconducting-like behavior, respectively. The magnetoresistance is highest in the Ba substituted compound. All the three samples show irreversibility in magnetization as a function of temperature in zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) plots. The non-saturating magnetization, even at 5K and 4 Tesla field, are observed in Ca as well Ba-substituted compounds.

Properties of magnetite nanoparticles synthesized through a novel chemical route

We have developed a simple precipitation route to synthesize magnetite (Fe3O4) nano-particles with controlled size without any requirement of calcination step at high temperatures. The study of these nano-particles indicates an enhancement in saturation magnetization with reduction in size down to ~10 nm beyond which the magnetization reduces. The latter is attributed to surface effects becoming predominant as surface to core volume ratio increases. From the view -point of applications, 10 nm size of magnetite particles seems to be the optimum.

Superconductivity in the intermetallic compound YRhAl

The intermetallic compound, YRhAl, has been prepared and is found to be isomorphic with RRhAl (R=Pr, Nd, Gd, Ho and Tm) compounds crystallizing in the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure (Space group Pnma). Heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements in the He-3 temperature range reveal that this compound is superconducting with a transition temperature, Tc, of 0.9 K. The electronic specific heat coefficient, gamma, and the Debye temperature are found to be 6.1 mJ/mole K and 197 K, respectively. The specific heat jump at the superconducting transition temperature is found to be consistent with the BCS weak-coupling limit. This combined with the earlier observation of superconductivity in LaRhAl (Tc = 2.4 K) having a different structure than that of YRhAl, suggests that the underlying structure is not very crucial for the occurrence of superconductivity in RRhAl series of compounds.

Magnetoelectricity at room temperature in Bi0.9-xTbxLa0.1FeO3 system

Magnetoelectric compounds with the general formula, Bi0.9-xRxLa0.1FeO3 (R =Gd, Tb, Dy, etc.), have been synthesized. These show the coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism, possess high dielectric constant and exhibit magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. Such materials may be of great significance in basic as well as applied research.

Systematic induction of superconductivity in Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O6.3 system

Compounds of series YBa2Cu3O7-d (d = 0.7), being synthesized by solid-state synthesis route with x = 0.0, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20, crystallize in single-phase form with tetragonal structure (space group P4/mmm). The c-lattice parameter increases with increasing x, indicating successful substitution of Y3+ by bigger Ca2+ ion. Resistance versus temperature (R vs. T) measurements show that pristine sample (x = 0.0) is semiconducting down to 5 K. Induction of superconductivity is seen with an increase in x. The x = 0.10 sample exhibit the onset of superconducting transition (Tconset) at around 42 K without attaining zero resistance superconducting transition temperature (TcR=0) state down to 5 K. For x = 0.15 and 0.20 samples TcR=0 is observed at 25 K and 35 K with Tconset of 52 K and 61 K respectively. Thermo-electric power (S) measurements in temperature range of 5 - 300 K, exhibited TcS=0 at around 25 K and 35 K respectively for x = 0.15 and 0.20 samples. Further a sign change in S from +ve to -ve is observed at low temperatures for x = 0.0 sample. Room temperature +ve S value decreases with increase in x, indicating enhanced number of mobile holes. The Magneto-transport measurements under applied magnet ic fields of 3 and 6 Tesla show the broadening of superconducting transition for x = 0.15, and 0.20 samples. For x = 0.10 sample the superconducting transition is suppressed in applied fields of 3 and 6 Tesla. Our results will help in constructing the complete phase diagram of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-d compounds with various x and d.

Structural and magnetic properties of MSr2Y1.5Ce0.5Cu2Oz (M-1222) compounds with M = Fe and Co

MSr2Y1.5Ce0.5Cu2Oz (M-1222) compounds, with M = Fe and Co, have been synthesized through a solid-state reaction route. Both compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm). A Rietveld structural refinement of room-temperature neutron diffraction data for Fe-1222 reveals that nearly half the Fe remains at the M site, while the other half goes to the Cu site in the CuO2 planes. Existence of Fe at two different lattice sites, is also confirmed by 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy from which it is inferred that nearly 50% of the total Fe occupies the Cu site in the CuO2 planes as Fe3+, whereas the other 50 % is located at the M site with nearly 40 % as Fe4+ and around 10% as Fe3+. For the M = Co compound, nearly 84 % of Co remains at its designated M site, while the rest occupies the Cu site in the CuO2 planes. The oxygen content, z, based on oxygen occupancies refined from the neutron diffraction data, comes close to 9.0 for both the samples The ZFC and FC magnetization curves as a function of temperature show a complex behavior for both Fe-1222 and Co-1222 compounds.

Superconductivity of up to 80 K for Tb-123 - TbSr2Cu2.7Mo0.3O7

The Tb-123 phase has been synthesized in single-phase form with the composition TbSr2Cu2.7Mo0.3O7 by solid-state reaction route and its phase purity is confirmed by neutron powder diffraction experiments. As-synthesized sample does not show superconductivity down to 5 K. An unusually high antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (TN) of around 7 K is seen for Tb. After 120-atm-O2 post-annealing, bulk superconductivity is achieved in the compound at around 30 K, without any significant effect on TN. To achieve higher oxygen content and higher Tc, the as-synthesized sample is subjected to high-pressure oxygenation (HPO) carried out in a closed cell at 5 GPa and 400 oC in the presence of AgO as an excess-oxygen source. This sample exhibited superconductivity onset at around 80 K with a Meissner fraction of larger than 10 % at 5 K. Our observation of superconductivity at 80 K is the highest Tc to-date among the Tb-123 compounds.

Effect of Mo-Substitution on Superconductivity, Flux Pinning and Critical Currents of la(1.5)Nd(0.5)Ca(1)Ba(2)Cu(5)O(z0

Mo-substituted triple perovskite superconducting samples with the stoichiometric composition La(1.5)Nd(0.5)Ca(1)Ba(2)[Cu(1-x)Mo(x)](5)O(z), [LNCBCuMO] with x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.10, have been investigated using X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and oxygen content measurements. The observed reduction in Tc with increasing Mo content (x) in LNCBCuMO, can be attributed to the decrease in hole concentration. Magnetization measurements as a function of temperature and field (H), exhibit an M-H hysteresis loop, which indicates moderate flux pinning, which can be attributed to the pinning centers created by Mo substitution at Cu sites. The critical current density, Jc, deduced from the M-H data satisfies the flux creep model.

Glass component induced hysteresis/memory effect in magnetoresistance of ferromagnetic Pr0.9Sr0.1CoO2.99

Pr0.9Sr0.1CoO2.99 sample exhibits magnetoresistivity (MR) of up to 40 % at 5 K with a strong hysteresis/memory effect. Magnetisation measurements on Pr0.9Sr0.1CoO2.99 in an applied field of 100 Oe show that, as temperature decreases, the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) magnetisation curves branch clearly at 50 K, and a cusp appears in the ZFC branch at Tcusp 20 K. Magnetisation measurements in various fields between 100 and 10,000 Oe show that both the ZFC-FC branching temperature and, Tcusp, decrease with increasing field. The magnetization-field isotherms at 5 and 10 K show hysteresis loops typical of ferromagnets. No appreciable MR is seen in this compound at 50 K, i.e. at a temperature close to ZFC-FC branching temperature. At 20 K, negative MR of above 16% is observed without any hysteresis effect. We believe that the appearance of a ferromagnetic component at 5 K and 10 K (i.e. at temperatures below Tcusp) within the spin glass state of Co spins is responsible for both large MR and the prominent hysteresis/memory effect in MR.

Cation intermixing and ordering phenomenon in MO layer of MSr2YCu2Oz (M1212) compounds with M = Fe, Co, Al, and Ga: A neutron powder diffraction study

Various MSr2YCu2Oz (M1212 with M = Fe, Co, Al and Ga) compounds have been synthesized through a solid state reaction route. All these compounds are derived from the basic CuBa2YCu2O7 structure. Rietveld structural refinement of the room-temperature neutron diffraction data for Fe-1212 reveals that nearly half of Fe remains at the M site, while the other half goes to the Cu site in the CuO2 plane. For the M = Co, Al and Ga compounds, the basic unit cell gets doubled due to two distinct M sites in the M-O layer and the space group Ima2, without any cation intermixing is found more appropriate. For the M = Fe sample, magnetic ordering of Fe spins is seen from magnetization data below 70 K. In the case of the M = Co compound, a shallow down-turn in magnetic susceptibility is seen below 150 K, indicating low dimensional magnetic characteristics of the CoO layer. The compounds with M = Al and Ga show paramagnetic behaviour in their magnetization data down to 5 K. The oxygen content, established for each compound based on oxygen occupancies, refined from the neutron diffraction data comes close to 7.0 for each.

Magnetization studies on superconducting MgB$_2$ - lower and upper critical fields and critical current density

Magnetization studies have been carried out on superconducting MgB$_2$ (T$_c$=37K) in the temperature range of 2-50K and in magnetic field up to 5 Tesla. From these measurements, values of the lower critical field H$_c1$(0), upper critical field H$_c2$(0) at zero K are estimated to be ~300 Oe and ~12.5 Tesla, respectively, which yield a value of ~26 for the Ginzburg-Landau parameter, k. Magnetization hysteresis loops have been obtained at various temperatures from which the magnetization critical current density is estimated using Bean's critical state model.
