Commissioning and testing of pre-series triple GEM prototypes for CBM-MuCh in the mCBM experiment at the SIS18 facility of GSI

Large area triple GEM chambers will be employed in the first two stations of the MuCh system of the CBM experiment at the upcoming Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research FAIR in Darmstadt/Germany. The GEM detectors have been designed to take data at an unprecedented interaction rate (up to 10 MHz) in nucleus-nucleus collisions in CBM at FAIR. Real-size trapezoidal modules have been installed in the mCBM experiment and tested in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the SIS18 beamline of GSI as a part of the FAIR Phase-0 program. In this report, we discuss the design, installation, commissioning, and response of these GEM modules in detail. The response has been studied using the free-streaming readout electronics designed for the CBM-MuCh and CBM-STS detector system. In free-streaming data, the first attempt on an event building based on the timestamps of hits has been carried out, resulting in the observation of clear spatial correlations between the GEM modules in the mCBM setup for the first time. Accordingly, a time resolution of $\sim$15\,ns have been obtained for the GEM detectors.

A new type of RPC with very low resistive material

There are several working groups that are currently working on high rate RPC's using different materials such as Si-based Ceramics, Low-resistive Glass, low-resistive bakelite etc. A new type of single gap RPC has been fabricated using very low-resistive carbon-loaded PTFE material to compete with all these other groups and materials. In terms of bulk resistivity, this material is the lowest and should in principle be able to work at the highest rates, provided the material can withstand working bias and radiation. The efficiency and noise rate of the RPC are measured with cosmic rays. The detail method of fabrication and first experimental results are presented.

Study of stability of gain and energy resolution for GEM detector in high rate operation

Study of the stability of gain and energy resolution for a triple GEM detector has been performed under continuous radiation of X-ray with high rate, using premixed gas of Argon and CO$_2$ in 70/30 ratio and conventional NIM electronics. A strong Fe$^{55}$ X-ray source is used for this study. The novelty of this study is that for the stability test same source is used to irradiate the GEM chamber and to monitor the spectrum. The radiation is not collimated to a point but exposed to a larger area. Effect of temperature and pressure on these parameters are also studied. The detail method of measurement and the first test results are presented in this article.

Studies of the effect of rate on gain for straw tube detector

Basic R & D have been carried out with one small straw tube detector prototype with premixed gas of Ar+CO2 in 70:30 and 90:10 ratio. The gain and the energy resolution are measured with Fe55 X-ray source. Effect of temperature and pressure on these parameters are measured. The variation of gain and energy resolution with rate per unit length are also measured. The details of the test set-up, the method of measurement and the test results are presented in this paper.

Jet measurements in pp, p--Pb and Pb--Pb collisions with ALICE at the LHC

We present a systematic study of jet measurements in pp, p--Pb and Pb--Pb collisions using the ALICE detector at the LHC. Jet production cross sections are measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76 and 7~TeV, in p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02~TeV and in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76~TeV. Jet shape observables and fragmentation distributions are measured in pp collisions at 7~TeV. Jets are reconstructed at midrapidity in a wide range of transverse momentum using sequential recombination jet finding algorithms ($k_{\rm T}$, anti-$k_{\rm T}$, and SISCone) with several values of jet resolution parameter $R$ in the range 0.2 -- 0.6. Measurements are compared to Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations and predictions from Monte Carlo (MC) event generators such as PYTHIA, PHOJET and HERWIG. Jet production cross sections are well reproduced by NLO pQCD calculations in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$~=~2.76~TeV. MC models could not explain the jet cross sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV, whereas jet shapes and fragmentation distributions are rather well reproduced by these models. The jet nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm pPb}$ in p--Pb collisions is found to be consistent with unity indicating the absence of large modifications of the initial parton distribution or strong final state effects on jet production, whereas a large jet suppression is observed in Pb--Pb central events with respect to peripheral events indicating formation of a dense medium in central Pb--Pb events.

Charged particle jet measurements with the ALICE experiment in proton-proton collisions at the LHC

We present preliminary results of measurements of charged particle jet properties in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed using $\rm anti-k_{T}, k_{T}$ and SISCone jet finding algorithms with resolution parameter $R=0.4$ in the range of transverse momentum from 20 to 100 GeV/$c$ in the midrapidity region ($\midη\mid\textless$ 0.5). The uncorrected charged jet spectra obtained using the three different jet finders show good agreement. The data are compared to predictions from PYTHIA-Perugia0, PYTHIA-Perugia2011, and PHOJET. The mean charged particle multiplicity in leading jets increases with increasing jet $p_{\rm T}$ and is consistent with model predictions. The radial distributions of transverse momentum about the jet direction and the distributions of the average radius containing 80% of the total jet $p_{\rm T}$ found in the jet cone ($R = 0.4$ in this analysis), indicate that high $p_{\rm T}$ jets are more collimated than low $p_{\rm T}$ jets.

Photon multiplicity measurements at forward rapidity in the ALICE experiment at CERN

We present the first preliminary results on photon multiplicity measurements at LHC at forward pseudorapidity (2.3 $\textless$ $η$ $\textless$ 3.9) in proton-proton ($pp$) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. The multiplicity distribution is found to be reasonably well explained by a double Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD). The average photon multiplicity increases logarithmically with $\sqrt{s}$. It is found that none of the models we used (PYTHIA6D6T, PHOJET, and HERWIG) could explain the data.

Elliptic flow ($v_2$) in pp collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider: A hydrodynamical approach

At Large Hadron Collider energy, the expected large multiplicities suggests the presence of collective behavior even in pp collisions. A hydrodynamical approach has been applied to estimate the expected elliptic flow measured by the azimuthal asymmetry parameter $v_2$, in pp collisions at $\surd$s = 14 TeV. $v_2$ of $π^-$ is found to be strongly dependent on the parton density profile inside a proton [e.g., surface diffuseness parameter ($ξ$)]. For $ξ$ = 0.105, $v_2$ is found to be positive while at $ξ$ = 0.25, $v_2$ is close to zero and approaches negative values at large $p_t$. The impact parameter dependence of $v_2$ has also been studied.

Chiral Twisting of a Smectic-A Liquid Crystal

Chiral twisting of the molecular orientation within the layer of a smectic-A liquid crystal has been investigated using circular dichroism spectroscopy. The results indicate that a rotation of the layers away from the alignment direction is induced by the surface electroclinic effect. This leads to an interfacial region where the molecular director twists from the alignment direction until it reaches the layer normal direction. A theory is presented to explain the observed field and temperature dependence of the circular dichroism.
