Low-complexity neural network equalization for long-haul coherent transmission with cascaded semiconductor optical amplifiers

In this letter, we numerically investigate a long-haul coherent data transmission system with a cascade of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). We exploit low-complexity neural networks that can be implemented in real time to compensate for the accumulated distortions induced by a cascade of SOAs. This equalization provides an order-of-magnitude reduction in bit error rate at low dispersion (in the O-band), whereas higher dispersion degrades performance.

Trainable dynamical masking for readout-free optical computing

Nonlinear systems, transforming an input signal into a high-dimensional output feature space, can be used for non-conventional computing. This approach, however, requires a change of system parameters during training rather than coefficients in a software program. We propose here to use available off-the-shelf high-speed optical communication devices and technologies to implement a trainable dynamical mask in addition to or even instead of the traditional readout layer for extreme learning machine-based computing. The computational potential of the proposed approach is demonstrated with both regression and time series prediction tasks.

SOA-based reservoir computing using up-sampling

We introduce a new approach to reservoir computing based on up-sampling and modulation, utilizing semiconductor optical amplifier and photodetector as nonlinear elements without conventionally used delay loop. We demonstrated the 400-step prediction capability of the proposed scheme for the Mackey-Glass time series test.

Quasi-classical Langmuir wave collapse in a magnetic field

The anisotropy due to a magnetic field is shown to result in significant changes in Langmuir collapse. Using a variational approach, the quasi-classical collapse phenomenon is investigated analytically. A hierarchy of quasi-classical collapses is determined, along with the structure of a field in the proximity of a stationary singularity that is sustained by the continuous absorption of wave energy from a wave packet.

New approaches to coding information using inverse scattering transform

Remarkable mathematical properties of the integrable nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) can offer advanced solutions for the mitigation of nonlinear signal distortions in optical fibre links. Fundamental optical soliton, continuous and discrete eigenvalues of the nonlinear spectrum have already been considered for transmission of information in fibre-optic channels. Here we propose to apply signal modulation to the kernel of the Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equations (GLME) that offers the advantage of a relatively simple decoder design. First, we describe an approach based on exploiting the general N-soliton solution of the NLSE for simultaneous coding of $N$ symbols involving $4\times N$ coding parameters. As a specific elegant sub-class of the general schemes we introduce a soliton orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SOFDM) method. This method is based on the choice of identical imaginary parts of the N-soliton solution eigenvalues, corresponding to equidistant soliton frequencies making it similar to the conventional OFDM scheme, thus, allowing use of the efficient fast Fourier transform algorithm to recover the data. Then, we demonstrate how to use this new approach to control signal parameters in the case of the continuous spectrum.

Mutual information in nonlinear communication channel. Preliminary analytical results in large SNR and small nonlinearity limit

Applying perturbation theory to the path-integral representation for the mutual information of the nonlinear communication channel described by the nonlinear Shrödinger equation (NLSE) with the additive Gaussian noise we analyze the analytical expression for the mutual information at large signal-to-noise ratio ($\mathrm{SNR}$) and small nonlinearity. We classify all possible corrections to the mutual information in nonlinearity parameter and demonstrate that all singular in $\mathrm{SNR}$ terms vanish in the final result. Furthermore our analytical result demonstrates that the corrections to Shannon's contribution to the mutual information in the leading order in $\mathrm{SNR}$ are of order of squared nonlinearity parameter. We outline the way for the calculation of these corrections in the further investigations.

Calculation of mutual information for nonlinear communication channel at large SNR

Using the path-integral technique we examine the mutual information for the communication channel modelled by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additive Gaussian noise. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation is one of the fundamental models in nonlinear physics, and it has a broad range of applications, including fiber optical communications --- the backbone of the Internet. At large signal-to-noise ratio ($\mathrm{SNR}$) we present the mutual information through the path-integral which is convenient for the perturbative expansion in nonlinearity. In the limit of small noise and small nonlinearity we derive analytically the first nonzero nonlinear correction to the mutual information for the channel.

Optimal input signal distribution and per-sample mutual information for nondispersive nonlinear optical fiber channel at large SNR

We consider a model nondispersive nonlinear optical fiber channel with additive white Gaussian noise at large $\mathrm{SNR}$ (signal-to-noise ratio) in the intermediate power region. Using Feynman path-integral technique we for the first time find the optimal input signal distribution maximizing the channel's per-sample mutual information. The finding of the optimal input signal distribution allows us to improve previously known estimates for the channel capacity. The output signal entropy, conditional entropy, and per-sample mutual information are calculated for Gaussian, half-Gaussian and modified Gaussian input signal distributions. We explicitly show that in the intermediate power regime the per-sample mutual information for the optimal input signal distribution is greater than the per-sample mutual information for the Gaussian and half-Gaussian input signal distributions.

Pattern generation by dissipative parametric instability

Nonlinear instabilities are responsible for spontaneous pattern formation in a vast number of natural and engineered systems ranging from biology to galaxies build-up. We propose a new instability mechanism leading to pattern formation in spatially extended nonlinear systems based on a periodic antiphase modulation of spectrally-dependent losses arranged in a zig-zag way: an effective filtering is imposed at symmetrically located wavenumbers k and -k in alternating order. The properties of the dissipative parametric instability differ from the features of the both key classical concepts of modulation instabilities: the Benjamin-Feir, and the Faraday instability. We demonstrate how dissipative parametric instability can lead to the formation of stable patterns in one and two-dimensional systems. The proposed instability mechanism is generic and can naturally occur or can be implemented in various physical systems.

Conditional probability calculations for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additive noise

The method for computation of conditional probability density function for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additive noise is developed. We present in a constructive form the conditional probability density function in the limit of a small noise and analytically derive it in a weakly nonlinear case. The general theory results are illustrated using fibre-optic communications as a particular, albeit practically very important, example.

The laminar-turbulent transition in a fibre laser

Studying transition to a highly disordered state of turbulence from a linearly stable coherent laminar state is conceptually and technically challenging and immensely important, e.g. all pipe and channel flows are of that type. In optics, understanding how systems lose coherence with increase of spatial size or excitation level is an open fundamental problem of practical importance. Here we identify, arguably, the simplest system where this classical problem can be studied: we learnt to operate a fibre laser in laminar and turbulent regimes. We show that laminar phase is an analogue of a one-dimensional coherent condensate and turbulence onset is through a spatial loss of coherence. We discover a new mechanism of laminar-turbulent transition in laser operation: condensate destruction by the clustering of dark and grey solitons. This is important both for the design of devices exploiting coherent dynamics and for conceptually new technologies based on systems operating far from thermodynamic equilibrium.

Shannon capacity of nonlinear regenerative channels

We compute Shannon capacity of nonlinear channels with regenerative elements. Conditions are found under which capacity of such nonlinear channels is higher than the Shannon capacity of the classical linear additive white Gaussian noise channel. We develop a general scheme for designing the proposed channels and apply it to the particular nonlinear sine-mapping. The upper bound for regeneration efficiency is found and the asymptotic behavior of the capacity in the saturation regime is derived.

Soliton-based discriminator of non-coherent optical pulses

We introduce a concept of noncoherent optical pulse discrimination from a coherent (or partially coherent) signal of the same energy using a phenomenon of soliton generation. The impact of randomisation of the optical signal content on the observable characteristics of solitons generation is examined and quantified for a particular example of rectangular pulse.

Information capacity of optical fiber channels with zero average dispersion

We study the statistics of optical data transmission in a noisy nonlinear fiber channel with a weak dispersion management and zero average dispersion. Applying path integral methods we have found exactly the probability density functions of channel output both for a non-linear noisy channel and for a linear channel with additive and multiplicative noise. We have obtained analytically a lower bound estimate for the Shannon capacity of considered nonlinear fiber channel.
