On modular balanced partition designs

Let $X$ be a finite set of integers with cardinality $\nu = \kappa \lambda$. A \emph{modular balanced partition design} is a triplet $(X, \mathcal{A}, \mathcal{B})$ satisfying the following conditions: \begin{itemize} \item $\mathcal{A}$ is a partition of $X$ into $\kappa$ blocks of size $\lambda$, such that every element of $X$ appears in exactly one block. If $\mathcal{A} = \{A_1, A_2, \ldots, A_{\kappa}\}$, then $\sum_{a\in A_i} a \equiv i \lambda \pmod{\nu}$, for each $i=1,2,\ldots,\kappa$ \item $\mathcal{B}$ is a partition of $X$ into $\lambda$ blocks of size $\kappa$, such that every element of $X$ appears in exactly one block. If $\mathcal{B} = \{B_1, B_2, \ldots, B_{\lambda}\}$, then $\sum_{b\in B_j} b \equiv j \kappa \pmod{\nu}$, for each $j=1,2,\ldots,\lambda$ \item $A_i \cap B_j$ has exactly one element, for any $A_i \in \mathcal{A}$, and $B_j \in \mathcal{B}$. \itemize} We prove the necessary conditions for the existence of a modular balanced partition design. Moreover, we investigate and identify a relationship between a modular balanced partition design and a subgroup magic rectangle. Then by using affine automorphisms of an Abelian group, we prove the existence of non-isomorphic modular balanced partition designs. Finally, we provide a method to construct a transversal design via a modular balanced partition design.

Urban Haze and Photovoltaics

Urban haze is a multifaceted threat. Foremost a major health hazard, it also affects the passage of light through the lower atmosphere. In this paper, we present a study addressing the impact of haze on the performance pf photovoltaic installations in cities. Using long-term, high resolution field data from Delhi and Singapore we derive an empirical relation between reduction in insolation and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration. This approach enables a straightforward way to estimate air pollution related losses to photovoltaic power generation anywhere on the planet. For Delhi, we find that insolation received by silicon PV panels was reduced by 11.5% plus minus 1.5% or 200 kWh/m2 per year between 2016 and 2017 due to air pollution. We extended this analysis to 16 more cities around the planet and estimated insolation reductions ranging from 2.0% (Singapore) to 9.1% (Beijing). Using spectrum data from Singapore, we projected how other photovoltaic technologies would be affected and found an additional reduction compared to silicon of between 23% relative for GaAs and 42% for a 1.64 eV perovskite material. Considering current installation targets and local prices for electricity, we project that annual losses in revenue from photovoltaic installations could exceed 20 million USD for Delhi alone, indicating that annual economic damage from air pollution to photovoltaic site operators and investors worldwide could be billions of dollars.

Classifier Fusion Method to Recognize Handwritten Kannada Numerals

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is one of the important fields in image processing and pattern recognition domain. Handwritten character recognition has always been a challenging task. Only a little work can be traced towards the recognition of handwritten characters for the south Indian languages. Kannada is one such south Indian language which is also one of the official language of India. Accurate recognition of Kannada characters is a challenging task because of the high degree of similarity between the characters. Hence, good quality features are to be extracted and better classifiers are needed to improve the accuracy of the OCR for Kannada characters. This paper explores the effectiveness of feature extraction method like run length count (RLC) and directional chain code (DCC) for the recognition of handwritten Kannada numerals. In this paper, a classifier fusion method is implemented to improve the recognition rate. For the classifier fusion, we have considered K-nearest neighbour (KNN) and Linear classifier (LC). The novelty of this method is to achieve better accuracy with few features using classifier fusion approach. Proposed method achieves an average recognition rate of 96%.

Packet Score based network security and Traffic Optimization

One of the critical threat to internet security is Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS). This paper by the introduction of automated online attack classification and attack packet discarding helps to resolve the network security issue by certain level. The incoming packets are assigned scores based on the priority associated with the attributes and on comparison with probability distribution of arriving packets on per packet basis.
