Unusual Single-Ion Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in Ce_(1-x)La_xNi_9Ge_4

We report on specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements on the compound Ce_(1-x)La_xNi_9Ge_4 for various concentrations ranging from the stoichiometric system with x=0 to the dilute limit x=0.95. Our data reveal single-ion scaling with the Ce-concentration and the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat c/T approximately 5.5 J K^(-2)mol^(-1) at T=0.08K for the stoichiometric compound x=0 without any trace of magnetic order. While in the doped samples c/T increases logarithmically below 3K down to 50mK, their magnetic susceptibility behaves Fermi liquid like below 1K. These properties make the compound Ce_(1-x)La_xNi_9Ge_4 a unique system on the borderline between Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid physics.

Crossover from Non-Equilibrium to Equilibrium Behavior in the Time-Dependent Kondo Model

We investigate the equilibration of a Kondo model that is initially prepared in a non-equilibrium state towards its equilibrium behavior. Such initial non-equilibrium states can e.g. be realized in quantum dot experiments with time-dependent gate voltages. We evaluate the non-equilibrium spin-spin correlation function at the Toulouse point of the Kondo model exactly and analyze the crossover between non-equilibrium and equilibrium behavior as the non-equilibrium initial state evolves as a function of the waiting time for the first spin measurement. Using the flow equation method we extend these results to the experimentally relevant limit of small Kondo couplings.

Exploiting environmental resonances to enhance qubit quality factors

We discuss dephasing times for a two-level system (including bias) coupled to a damped harmonic oscillator. This system is realized in measurements on solid-state Josephson qubits. It can be mapped to a spin-boson model with a spectral function with an approximately Lorentzian resonance. We diagonalize the model by means of infinitesimal unitary transformations (flow equations), and calculate correlation functions, dephasing rates, and qubit quality factors. We find that these depend strongly on the environmental resonance frequency $Ω$; in particular, quality factors can be enhanced significantly by tuning $Ω$ to lie below the qubit frequency $Δ$.

Changes in non-Fermi liquid behavior with annealing due to lattice disorder in UCu_4Pd

The magnetic and electronic properties of non-Fermi liquid UCu_4Pd depend on annealing conditions. Local structural changes due to this annealing are reported from U L_III- and Pd K-edge x-ray absorption fine-structure measurements. In particular, annealing decreases the fraction of Pd atoms on nominally Cu 16e sites and the U-Cu pair-distance distribution width. This study provides quantitative information on the amount of disorder in UCu_4Pd and allows an assessment of its possible importance to the observed non-Fermi liquid behavior.

Semi-analytical solution of the Kondo model in a magnetic field

The single impurity Kondo model at zero temperature in a magnetic field is solved by a semi-analytical approach based on the flow equation method. The resulting problem is shown to be equivalent to a resonant level model with a non-constant hybridization function. This nontrivial effective hybridization function encodes the quasiparticle interaction in the Kondo limit, while the magnetic field enters as the impurity orbital energy. The evaluation of static and dynamic quantities of the strong-coupling Kondo model becomes very simple in this effective model. We present results for thermodynamic quantities and the dynamical spin-structure factor and compare them with NRG calculations.

Order and nFl Behavior in UCu4Pd

We have studied the role of disorder in the non-Fermi liquid system UCu4Pd using annealing as a control parameter. Measurement of the lattice parameter indicates that this procedure increases the crystallographic order by rearranging the Pd atoms from the 16e to the 4c sites. We find that the low temperature properties depend strongly on annealing. Whereas the non-Fermi liquid behavior in the specific heat can be observed over a larger temperature range after annealing, the clear non-Fermi liquid behavior of the resistivity of the unannealed sample below 10 K disappears. We come to the conclusion that this argues against the Kondo disorder model as an explanation for the non-Fermi liquid properties of both as-prepared and annealed UCu4Pd.

Flow equation analysis of the anisotropic Kondo model

We use the new method of infinitesimal unitary transformations to calculate zero temperature correlation functions in the strong-coupling phase of the anisotropic Kondo model. We find the dynamics on all energy scales including the crossover behaviour from weak to strong coupling. The integrable structure of the Hamiltonian is not used in our approach. Our method should also be useful in other strong-coupling models since few other analytical methods allow the evaluation of their correlation functions on all energy scales.

Symmetric Anderson impurity model with a narrow band

The single channel Anderson impurity model is a standard model for the description of magnetic impurities in metallic systems. Usually, the bandwidth represents the largest energy scale of the problem. In this paper, we analyze the limit of a narrow band, which is relevant for the Mott-Hubbard transition in infinite dimensions. For the symmetric model we discuss two different effects: i) The impurity contribution to the density of states at the Fermi surface always turns out to be negative in such systems. This leads to a new crossover in the thermodynamic quantities that we investigate using the numerical renormalization group. ii) Using the Lanczos method, we calculate the impurity spectral function and demonstrate the breakdown of the skeleton expansion on an intermediate energy scale. Luttinger's theorem, as an example of the local Fermi liquid property of the model, is shown to still be valid.

Absence of hysteresis at the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in infinite dimensions

The nature of the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in the infinite-dimensional Hubbard model is investigated by Quantum Monte Carlo simulations down to temperature T=W/140 (W=bandwidth). Calculating with significantly higher precision than in previous work, we show that the hysteresis below T_{IPT}\simeq 0.022W, reported in earlier studies, disappears. Hence the transition is found to be continuous rather than discontinuous down to at least T=0.325T_{IPT}. We also study the changes in the density of states across the transition, which illustrate that the Fermi liquid breaks down before the gap opens.
