High Purity Pion Beam at TRIUMF

An extension of the TRIUMF M13 low-energy pion channel designed to suppress positrons based on an energy-loss technique is described. A source of beam channel momentum calibration from the decay pi+ --> e+ nu is also described.

Proposal for an Experimental Program in Neutrino Physics and Proton Decay in the Homestake Laboratory

This report is intended to describe first, the principal physics reasons for an ambitious experimental program in neutrino physics and proton decay based on construction of a series of massive water Cherenkov detectors located deep underground (4850 ft) in the Homestake Mine of the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA); and second, the engineering design of the underground chambers to house the Cherenkov detector modules; and third, the conceptual design of the water Cherenkov detectors themselves for this purpose. Included in this document are preliminary costs and time-to-completion estimates which have been exposed to acknowledged experts in their respective areas. We have included some contingency factors. Nevertheless, we recognize that much more extensive documentation and contingency estimates will be needed for a full technical design report. In this proposal we show the event rates and physics sensitivity for beams from both FNAL (1300 km distant from Homestake) and BNL (2540 km distant from Homestake). The program we propose will benefit from a beam from FNAL because of the high intensities currently available from the Main Injector with modest upgrades. The possibility of tuning the primary proton energy over a large range from 30 to 120 GeV also adds considerable flexibility to the program from FNAL.

Photon sandwich detectors with WLS fiber readout

A photon detector for BNL experiment E949 is described. The detector consists of lead/scintillator ``sandwich'' of 25 layers of 5 mm thick scintillator BC404 and 24 layers of 2 mm lead absorber. Readout is implemented with 30-60 cm long WLS fibers (BCF99-29AA) glued into grooves in the BC404. Average yield was measured with cosmic rays to be about 43 p.e./MeV. Extruded plastic scintillation counters developed for sandwich detectors of photons for the KOPIO experiment are also described. For a 7 mm thick counter with 4.3 m long WLS fibers spaced at 7 mm a light yield of 18.7 p.e./MeV and time resolution of 0.71 ns were obtained. A prototype photon veto module consisting of 10 layers of 7 mm thick extruded plastic slabs interleaved with 1 mm lead sheets was tested.

Future Kaon Programs at BNL and FNAL

Future kaon decay programs at BNL and FNAL are discussed. The primary focus of these programs is the measurement of the golden modes, the neutral and charged kaon decays to a pion and two neutrinos. The observation of the charged mode by E787 at BNL is the first step in a series of measurements which will completely determine the unitarity triangle within the kaon system.

Measurement of B(K -> pnn)

The experimental measurement of positive kaons decaying to a positive pion and a neutrino, anti-neutrino pair (pnn) is reviewed. Recent results from experiment E787 at BNL are presented: with data from 1995--97 the branching ratio has been measured to be B(pnn) = (1.5^{+3.4}_{-1.2}) \times10^{-10}. The future prospects for additional data in this mode are examined.

Rare Kaon Decay Experiments

The status of rare kaon decay experiments is reviewed. With the current generation of experiments now finishing, several exciting new results are available. New limits in the search for Lepton Flavor Violation (LFV) will be discussed, as will new limits and measurements of the CKM matrix parameters. The next generation of rare kaon decay experiments and their contribution to determination of CKM parameters will also be discussed.

Eperimental Results on Radiative Kaon Decays

This paper reviews the current status of experimental measurements of radiative kaon decays. Several experiments at BNL, CERN and FNAL have recently or will soon complete data collection; as a result, several new results are available.

Search for T Violation in KMU3 Decay

We propose a new experiment at the AGS to search for the T-violating polarization of the muon normal to the decay plane of the K+ to mu+ pi0 nu decay. Motivated by the need for a stronger CP violation source to account for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, the experiment aims to search for T-violation beyond the Standard Model. The experiment will be performed with in-flight decays from an intense 2 GeV/c separated K+ beam at the AGS. We expect to analyze 10**9 events to obtain the sensitivity of delta Pt = +- 0.00013 at 1 sigma, corresponding to the sensitivity of +-0.0007 to Im(xi), an improvement by 40 over the present limit.
