The Gluonic Operator Matrix Elements at O(α_s^2) for DIS Heavy Flavor Production

We calculate the $O(α_s^2)$ gluonic operator matrix elements for the twist--2 operators, which contribute to the heavy flavor Wilson coefficients in unpolarized deeply inelastic scattering in the region $Q^2 \gg m^2$, up to the linear terms in the dimensional parameter $\varepsilon$, ($D= 4 + \varepsilon$). These quantities are required for the description of parton distribution functions in the variable flavor number scheme (VFNS). The $O(α_s^2 \varepsilon)$ terms contribute at the level of the $O(α_s^3)$ corrections through renormalization. We also comment on additional terms, which have to be considered in the fixed (FFNV) and variable flavor number scheme, adopting the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme for the running coupling constant.

Heavy flavor operator matrix elements at $O(a_s^3)$

The heavy quark effects in deep--inelastic scattering in the asymptotic regime $Q^2 \gg m^2$ can be described by heavy flavor operator matrix elements. Complete analytic expressions for these objects are currently known to ${\sf NLO}$. We present first results for fixed moments at ${\sf NNLO}$. This involves a recalculation of fixed moments of the corresponding ${\sf NNLO}$ anomalous dimensions, which we thereby confirm.

First $O(α_s^3)$ heavy flavor contributions to deeply inelastic scattering

In the asymptotic limit $Q^2 \gg m^2$, the heavy flavor Wilson coefficients for deep--inelastic scattering factorize into the massless Wilson coefficients and the universal heavy flavor operator matrix elements resulting from light--cone expansion. In this way, one can calculate all but the power corrections in $(m^2/Q^2)^k, k > 0$. The heavy flavor operator matrix elements are known to ${\sf NLO}$. We present the last 2--loop result missing in the unpolarized case for the renormalization at 3--loops and first 3--loop results for terms proportional to the color factor $T_F^2$ in Mellin--space. In this calculation, the corresponding parts of the ${\sf NNLO}$ anomalous dimensions \cite{LARIN,MVVandim} are obtained as well.

Crystal-field level inversion in lightly Mn-doped Sr3Ru2O7

Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7, in which 4d-Ru is substituted by the more localized 3d-Mn, is studied by x-ray dichroism and spin-resolved density functional theory. We find that Mn impurities do not exhibit the same 4+ valence of Ru, but act as 3+ acceptors; the extra eg electron occupies the in-plane 3dx2-y2 orbital instead of the expected out-of-plane 3d3z2-r2. We propose that the 3d-4d interplay, via the ligand oxygen orbitals, is responsible for this crystal-field level inversion and the material's transition to an antiferromagnetic, possibly orbitally-ordered, low-temperature state.

Higher order corrections to heavy flavour production in deep inelastic scattering

In the asymptotic limit $Q^2 \gg m^2$, the non-power corrections to the heavy flavour Wilson coefficients in deep--inelastic scattering are given in terms of massless Wilson coeffcients and massive operator matrix elements. We start extending the existing NLO calculation for these operator matrix elements by calculating the O($ε$) terms of the two--loop expressions and having first investigations into the three--loop diagrams needed to O($α_s^3$).

Heavy Flavour Production in Deep--Inelastic Scattering - Two--Loop Massive Operator Matrix Elements and Beyond

We calculate the O($\eps$)--term of the two--loop massive operator matrix elements for twist 2--operators, which contribute to the heavy flavour Wilson coefficients in unpolarized deep--inelastic scattering in the asymptotic limit $Q^2 \gg m^2.$ Our calculation was performed in Mellin space using Mellin--Barnes integrals and generalized hypergeometric functions. The O($\eps$)--term contributes in the renormalization at 3--loop order.

Determining the crystal-field ground state in rare earth Heavy Fermion materials using soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy

We infer that soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy is a versatile method for the determination of the crystal-field ground state symmetry of rare earth Heavy Fermion systems, complementing neutron scattering. Using realistic and universal parameters, we provide a theoretical mapping between the polarization dependence of Ce $M_{4,5}$ spectra and the charge distribution of the Ce $4f$ states. The experimental resolution can be orders of magnitude larger than the $4f$ crystal field splitting itself. To demonstrate the experimental feasibility of the method, we investigated CePd$_2$Si$_2$, thereby settling an existing disagreement about its crystal-field ground state.

Difference Equations in Massive Higher Order Calculations

The calculation of massive 2--loop operator matrix elements, required for the higher order Wilson coefficients for heavy flavor production in deeply inelastic scattering, leads to new types of multiple infinite sums over harmonic sums and related functions, which depend on the Mellin parameter $N$. We report on the solution of these sums through higher order difference equations using the summation package {\tt Sigma}.

Calculation of Massive 2-Loop Operator Matrix Elements with Outer Gluon Lines

Massive on-shell operator matrix elements and self-energy diagrams with outer gluon lines are calculated analytically at $O(α_s^2)$, using Mellin-Barnes integrals and representations through generalized hypergeometric functions. This method allows for a direct evaluation without decomposing the integrals using the integration-by-parts method.

The high-energy gamma-ray fluence and energy spectrum of GRB 970417a from observations with Milagrito

Evidence of TeV emission from GRB970417a has been previously reported using data from the Milagrito detector. Constraints on the TeV fluence and the energy spectrum are now derived using additional data from a scaler system that recorded the rate of signals from the Milagrito photomultipliers. This analysis shows that if emission from GRB970417a has been observed, it must contain photons with energies above 650 GeV. Some consequences of this observation are discussed.

Ultra-peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions

We report the first observation of exclusive $ρ$ production in ultra-peripheral collisions at RHIC. The $ρ$ are produced electromagnetically at large impact parameters where no hadronic interactions occur. The produced $ρ$ have a small perpendicular momentum, consistent with production that is coherent on both the photon emitting and scattering nuclei. We observe both exclusive $ρ$ production, and $ρ$ production accompanied by electromagnetic dissociation of both nuclei. We discuss models of vector meson production and the correlation with nuclear breakup. We also observe $e^+e^-$ pair production in these ultra-peripheral collisions.

Testing the Markov condition in ion channel recordings

A statistical test is presented to decide whether data are adequately described by probabilistic functions of finite state Markov chains (''hidden Markov models'') as applied in the analysis of ion channel data. Particularly, the test can be used to decide whether a system obeys the Markov condition. Simulation studies are performed in order to investigate the sensitivity of the proposed test against violations of the model assumptions. The test can be applied analogously to Markov models.
