Swift observations of GRB050128: the early X-ray afterglow

Swift discovered GRB050128 with the Burst Alert Telescope and promptly pointed its narrow field instruments to monitor the afterglow. X-ray observations started 108 s after the trigger time. The early decay of the afterglow is relatively flat with a temporal decay modeled with a power law with index ~ -0.3. A steepening occurs at later times (~ 1500 s) with a power law index of ~ -1.3. During this transition, the observed X-ray spectrum does not change. We interpret this behaviour as either an early jet break or evidence for a transition from the fast cooling regime to the slow cooling regime in a wind environment.

Effects of polarized organosilane self-assembled monolayers on organic single-crystal field-effect transistors

The surface conductivity is measured by a four-probe technique for pentacene and rubrene single-crystals laminated on polarized and nearly unpolarized molecular monolayers with application of perpendicular electric fields. The polarization of the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) shifts the threshold gate voltage, while maintaining a very low subthreshold swing of the single-crystal devices (0.11 V/decade). The results, excluding influences of parasitic contacts and grain boundaries, demonstrate SAM-induced nanoscale charge injection up to ~10^12 cm^-2 at the surface of the organic single crystals.

External Control of Magnetism in Semiconductors at High Temperature (~100K)

We demonstrate the electrical and optical control of ferromagnetism in semiconductor heterostructures at high temperatures of 100-117 K. The heterostructures consist of Mn delta-doped GaAs and p-type AlGaAs, where the overlap of the hole wavefunction with the Mn delta-doping profile leads to high ferromagnetic transition temperature TC of over 100 K (max. 172 K). We are able to isothermally change the paramagnetic state to the ferromagnetic state and vice versa, by applying a gate electric-field or by light irradiation. The large modulation of TC (DTC ~15 K) at high temperatures (> ~100 K) demonstrated here may pave the way to functional device applications compatible with the present semiconductor technology.

High Energy Photons, Neutrinos and Gravitational Waves from Gamma-Ray Bursts

Most of the current knowldege about GRB is based on electromagnetic observations at MeV and lower energies. Here we focus on some recent theoretical work on GRB, in particular the higher energy (GeV-TeV) photon emission, and two potentially important non-electromagnetic channels, the TeV and higher energy neutrino signals, and the gravitational wave signals expected from GRB.

Dispersion of the Break Energy in the GRB Internal Shock Model

In order to investigate the dispersion of the spectral break energy in gamma-ray bursts, we simulate internal shocks, including effects of shell-splitting after shell collisions and the Thomson optical depth due to electron--positron pairs produced by synchrotron photons. We produce pseudo observational data and estimate the break energy. If the distribution of initial Lorentz factors of shells has only one peak, many pulses with a break energy much lower than the typical observed value should be detected, while the effect of the Thomson optical depth reduces pulses with a break energy of $>1$ MeV. If the Lorentz factor distribution has multiple peaks, the distribution of the break energy can be consistent with observations.

Development of the 50-Mev DTL for the Jaeri/Kek Joint Project

An Alvaretz-type DTL, to accelerate the H- ion beam from 3 to 50 MeV, is being constructed as the injector for the JAERI/KEK Joint Project. The following components of the DTL have been developed: (1) a cylindrical tank, made by copper electroforming; (2) rf contactors; (3) a pulse-excited quadrupole magnet with a hollow coil made by copper electroforming; (4) a switching-regulator-type pulsed-power supply for the quadrupole magnet. High-power tests of the components have been conducted using a short-model tank. Moreover a breakdown experiment of the copper electrodes has been carried out in order to study the properties of several kinds of copper materials.
