Growth, strain and spin orbit torques in epitaxial NiMnSb films sputtered on GaAs

We report current-induced spin torques in epitaxial NiMnSb films on a commercially available epi-ready GaAs substrate. The NiMnSb was grown by co-sputtering from three targets using optimised parameter. The films were processed into micro-scale bars to perform current-induced spin-torque measurements. Magnetic dynamics were excited by microwave currents and electric voltages along the bars were measured to analyse the symmetry of the current-induced torques. We found that the extracted symmetry of the spin torques matches those expected from spin-orbit interaction in a tetragonally distorted half-Heusler crystal. Both field-like and damping-like torques are observed in all the samples characterised, and the efficiency of the current-induced torques is comparable to that of ferromagnetic metal/heavy metal bilayers.

Spin-transport in superconductors

Spin-transport in superconductors is a subject of fundamental and technical importance with the potential for applications in superconducting-based cryogenic memory and logic. Research in this area is rapidly intensifying with recent discoveries establishing the field of superconducting spintronics. In this perspective we provide an overview of the experimental state-of-the-art with a particular focus on local and nonlocal spin-transport in superconductors, and propose device schemes to demonstrate the viability of superconducting spin-based devices.

Magnetic-field-orientation-dependent triplet supercurrents in Josephson junctions with symmetric and asymmetric exchange-spring interfaces

Josephson junctions with s-wave superconductors (S) and multiple ferromagnetic (F) layers carry spin-triplet supercurrents in the presence of magnetically inhomogeneous spin-mixer interfaces. Here, we report magnetic Josephson junctions with exchange-spring and double exchange-spring ("spin-mixer") Co/Py interfaces. At the Co/Py interface, exchange coupling is strong with respect to the magnetic anisotropy of Py and so, depending on the direction and magnitude of an external magnetic field, a non-collinear magnetic structure forms in Py creating the necessary magnetic inhomogeneity for singlet-to-triplet pair conversion. We detect supercurrents through Py with a thickness exceeding 10 nm, which is much larger than the singlet pair coherence length, suggesting the propagation of magnetically tuneable triplet supercurrents.

Magnetic exchange fields and domain wall superconductivity at an all-oxide superconductor / ferromagnet insulator interface

At a superconductor-ferromagnet (S/F) interface, the F layer can introduce a magnetic exchange field within the S layer, which acts to locally spin split the superconducting density of states. The effect of magnetic exchange fields on superconductivity has been thoroughly explored at S-ferromagnet insulator (S/FI) interfaces for isotropic s-wave S and a thickness that is smaller than the superconducting coherence length. Here we report a magnetic exchange field effect at an all-oxide S/FI interface involving the anisotropic d-wave high temperature superconductor praseodymium cerium copper oxide (PCCO) and the FI praseodymium calcium manganese oxide (PCMO). The magnetic exchange field in PCCO, detected via magnetotransport measurements through the superconducting transition, is localized to the PCCO/PCMO interface with an average magnitude that depends on the presence or absence of magnetic domain walls in PCMO. The results are promising for the development of all-oxide superconducting spintronic devices involving unconventional pairing and high temperature superconductors.

Spin-pumping-induced inverse spin-Hall effect in Nb/Ni80Fe20 bilayers and its strong decay across the superconducting transition temperature

We quantify the spin Hall angle θSH and spin diffusion length lsd of Nb from inverse spin-Hall effect (iSHE) measurements in Nb/Ni80Fe20 bilayers under ferromagnetic resonance. By varying the Nb thickness tNb and comparing to a Ni80Fe20/Pt reference sample, room temperature values of θSH and lsd for Nb are estimated to be approximately -0.001 and 30 nm, respectively. We also investigate the iSHE as a function of temperature T for different tNb. Above the superconducting transition temperature Tc of Nb, a clear tNb-dependent T evolution of the iSHE is observed whereas below Tc, the iSHE voltage drops rapidly and is below the sensitivity of our measurement setup at a lower T. This suggests the strong decay of the quasiparticle (QP) charge-imbalance relaxation length across Tc, as supported by an additional investigation of the iSHE in a different sample geometry along with model calculation. Our finding suggests careful consideration should be made when developing superconductor spin-Hall devices that intend to utilize QP-mediated spin-to-charge interconversion.

Different Evolution of Intrinsic Gap in Kondo Semiconductors SmB6 and YbB12

Dependence of the spectral functions on temperature and rare-earth substitution was examined in detail for Kondo semiconductor alloys Sm1-xEuxB6 and Yb1-xLuxB12 by bulk-sensitive photoemission. It is found that the 4f lattice coherence and intrinsic (small) energy gap are robust for SmB6 against the Eu substitution up to x = 0.15 while both collapse by Lu substitution already at x = 0.125 for YbB12. Our results suggest that the mechanism of the intrinsic gap formation is different between SmB6 and YbB12 although they were so far categorized in the same kind of Kondo semiconductors.

Axially symmetric multi-baryon solutions and their quantization in the chiral quark soliton model

In this paper, we study axially symmetric solutions with $B=2-5$ in the chiral quark soliton model. In the background of axially symmetric chiral fields, the quark eigenstates and profile functions of the chiral fields are computed self-consistently. The resultant quark bound spectrum are doubly degenerate due to the symmetry of the chiral field. Upon quantization, various observable spectra of the chiral solitons are obtained. Taking account of the Finkelstein-Rubinstein constraints, we show that our results exactly coincide with the physical observations for B=2 and 4 while B=3 and 5 do not.
