Search for gravitational lensing signatures in LIGO-Virgo binary black hole events

We search for signatures of gravitational lensing in the binary black hole events detected by Advanced LIGO and Virgo during their first two observational runs. In particular, we look for three effects: 1) evidence of lensing magnification in the individual signals due to galaxy lenses, 2) evidence of multiple images due to strong lensing by galaxies, 3) evidence of wave optics effects due to point-mass lenses. We find no compelling evidence of any of these signatures in the observed gravitational wave signals. However, as the sensitivities of gravitational wave detectors improve in the future, detecting lensed events may become quite likely.

Carnegie Supernova Project-II: The Near-infrared Spectroscopy Program

Shifting the focus of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) cosmology to the near-infrared (NIR) is a promising way to significantly reduce the systematic errors, as the strategy minimizes our reliance on the empirical width-luminosity relation and uncertain dust laws. Observations in the NIR are also crucial for our understanding of the origins and evolution of these events, further improving their cosmological utility. Any future experiments in the rest-frame NIR will require knowledge of the SN Ia NIR spectroscopic diversity, which is currently based on a small sample of observed spectra. Along with the accompanying paper, Phillips et al. (2018), we introduce the Carnegie Supernova Project-II (CSP-II), to follow up nearby SNe Ia in both the optical and the NIR. In particular, this paper focuses on the CSP-II NIR spectroscopy program, describing the survey strategy, instrumental setups, data reduction, sample characteristics, and future analyses on the data set. In collaboration with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) Supernova Group, we obtained 661 NIR spectra of 157 SNe Ia. Within this sample, 451 NIR spectra of 90 SNe Ia have corresponding CSP-II follow-up light curves. Such a sample will allow detailed studies of the NIR spectroscopic properties of SNe Ia, providing a different perspective on the properties of the unburned material, radioactive and stable nickel produced, progenitor magnetic fields, and searches for possible signatures of companion stars.

Zero-Magnetic Field Fractional Quantum States

Since the discovery of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in 1982 there has been considerable theoretical discussion on the possibility of fractional quantization of conductance in the absence of Landau levels formed by a quantizing magnetic field. Although various situations have been theoretically envisaged, particularly lattice models in which band flattening resembles Landau levels, the predicted fractions have never been observed. In this Letter, we show that odd and even denominator fractions can be observed, and manipulated, in the absence of a quantizing magnetic field, when a low-density electron system in a GaAs based one-dimensional quantum wire is allowed to relax in the second dimension. It is suggested that such a relaxation results in formation of a zig-zag array of electrons with ring paths which establish a cyclic current and a resultant lowering of energy. The behavior has been observed for both symmetric and asymmetric confinement but increasing the asymmetry of the confinement potential, to result in a flattening of confinement, enhances the appearance of new fractional states. We find that an in-plane magnetic field induces new even denominator fractions possibly indicative of electron pairing. The new quantum states described here have implications both for the physics of low dimensional electron systems and also for quantum technologies. This work will enable further development of structures which are designed to electrostatically manipulate the electrons for the formation of particular configurations. In turn, this could result in a designer tailoring of fractional states to amplify particular properties of importance in future quantum computation.

Periastron Observations of TeV Gamma-Ray Emission from a Binary System with a 50-year Period

We report on observations of the pulsar / Be star binary system PSR J2032+4127 / MT91 213 in the energy range between 100 GeV and 20 TeV with the VERITAS and MAGIC imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays. The binary orbit has a period of approximately 50 years, with the most recent periastron occurring on 2017 November 13. Our observations span from 18 months prior to periastron to one month after. A new, point-like, gamma-ray source is detected, coincident with the location of PSR J2032+4127 / MT91 213. The gamma-ray light curve and spectrum are well-characterized over the periastron passage. The flux is variable over at least an order of magnitude, peaking at periastron, thus providing a firm association of the TeV source with the pulsar / Be star system. Observations prior to periastron show a cutoff in the spectrum at an energy around 0.5 TeV. This result adds a new member to the small population of known TeV binaries, and it identifies only the second source of this class in which the nature and properties of the compact object are firmly established. We compare the gamma-ray results with the light curve measured with the X-ray Telescope (XRT) on board the Neil Gehrels \textit{Swift} Observatory and with the predictions of recent theoretical models of the system. We conclude that significant revision of the models is required to explain the details of the emission we have observed, and we discuss the relationship between the binary system and the overlapping steady extended source, TeV J2032+4130.

VERITAS and Fermi-LAT observations of new HAWC sources

The HAWC (High Altitude Water Cherenkov) collaboration recently published their 2HWC catalog, listing 39 very high energy (VHE; >100~GeV) gamma-ray sources based on 507 days of observation. Among these, there are nineteen sources that are not associated with previously known TeV sources. We have studied fourteen of these sources without known counterparts with VERITAS and Fermi-LAT. VERITAS detected weak gamma-ray emission in the 1~TeV-30~TeV band in the region of DA 495, a pulsar wind nebula coinciding with 2HWC J1953+294, confirming the discovery of the source by HAWC. We did not find any counterpart for the selected fourteen new HAWC sources from our analysis of Fermi-LAT data for energies higher than 10 GeV. During the search, we detected GeV gamma-ray emission coincident with a known TeV pulsar wind nebula, SNR G54.1+0.3 (VER J1930+188), and a 2HWC source, 2HWC J1930+188. The fluxes for isolated, steady sources in the 2HWC catalog are generally in good agreement with those measured by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. However, the VERITAS fluxes for SNR G54.1+0.3, DA 495, and TeV J2032+4130 are lower than those measured by HAWC and several new HAWC sources are not detected by VERITAS. This is likely due to a change in spectral shape, source extension, or the influence of diffuse emission in the source region.

Measurement of Cosmic-ray Electrons at TeV Energies by VERITAS

Cosmic-ray electrons and positrons (CREs) at GeV-TeV energies are a unique probe of our local Galactic neighborhood. CREs lose energy rapidly via synchrotron radiation and inverse-Compton scattering processes while propagating within the Galaxy and these losses limit their propagation distance. For electrons with TeV energies, the limit is on the order of a kiloparsec. Within that distance there are only a few known astrophysical objects capable of accelerating electrons to such high energies. It is also possible that the CREs are the products of the annihilation or decay of heavy dark matter (DM) particles. VERITAS, an array of imaging air Cherenkov telescopes in southern Arizona, USA, is primarily utilized for gamma-ray astronomy, but also simultaneously collects CREs during all observations. We describe our methods of identifying CREs in VERITAS data and present an energy spectrum, extending from 300 GeV to 5 TeV, obtained from approximately 300 hours of observations. A single power-law fit is ruled out in VERITAS data. We find that the spectrum of CREs is consistent with a broken power law, with a break energy at 710 $\pm$ 40$_{stat}$ $\pm$ 140$_{syst}$ GeV.

(Anti-)Chiral Supervariable Approach to Nilpotent and Absolutely Anticommuting Conserved Charges of Reparameterization Invariant Theories: A Couple of Relativistic Toy Models as Examples

We exploit the potential and power of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST invariant restrictions on the (anti-)chiral supervariables to derive the proper (anti-)BRST symmetries for the reparameterization invariant one (0+1)-dimensional (1D) toy models of the free relativistic particle as well as free spinning (i.e. supersymmetric) relativistic particle within the framework of (anti-)chiral supervariable approach to BRST formalism. Despite the (anti-)chiral super expansions of the (anti-)chiral supervariables, we observe that the (anti-)BRST charges, for the above toy models, turn out to be absolutely anticommuting in nature. This is one of the novel observations of our present endeavor. For this proof, we utilize the beauty and strength of Curci-Ferrari (CF) type restriction in the case of spinning relativistic particle but no such restriction is required in the case of the free scalar relativistic particle. We have also captured the nilpotency property of the conserved charges as well as the (anti-)BRST invariance of the appropriate Lagrangian(s) of our present toy models within the framework of (anti-)chiral supervariable approach.

Measurement of the Iron Spectrum in Cosmic Rays by VERITAS

We present a new measurement of the energy spectrum of iron nuclei in cosmic rays from 20 to 500 TeV. The measurement makes use of a template-based analysis method, which, for the first time, is applied to the energy reconstruction of iron-induced air showers recorded by the VERITAS array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The event selection makes use of the direct Cherenkov light which is emitted by charged particles before the first interaction, as well as other parameters related to the shape of the recorded air shower images. The measured spectrum is well described by a power law $\frac{\mathrm{d} F}{\mathrm{d} E}=f_0\cdot \left(\frac{E}{E_0}\right)^{-γ}$ over the full energy range, with $γ= 2.82 \pm 0.30 \mathrm{(stat.)} ^{+0.24}_{-0.27} \mathrm{(syst.)}$ and $f_0 = \left( 4.82 \pm 0.98 \mathrm{(stat.)}^{+2.12}_{-2.70} \mathrm{(syst.)} \right)\cdot 10^{-7}$m$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$sr$^{-1}$TeV$^{-1}$ at $E_0=50$TeV, with no indication of a cutoff or spectral break. The measured differential flux is compatible with previous results, with improved statistical uncertainty at the highest energies.

Nebular Spectroscopy of the `Blue Bump' Type Ia Supernova 2017cbv

We present nebular phase optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2017cbv. The early light curves of SN~2017cbv showed a prominent blue bump in the $U$, $B$ and $g$ bands lasting for $\sim$5 d. One interpretation of the early light curve was that the excess blue light was due to shocking of the SN ejecta against a nondegenerate companion star -- a signature of the single degenerate scenario. If this is the correct interpretation, the interaction between the SN ejecta and the companion star could result in significant H$α$ (or helium) emission at late times, possibly along with other species, depending on the companion star and its orbital separation. A search for H$α$ emission in our +302 d spectrum yields a nondetection, with a $L_{Hα}$$<$8.0$\times$10$^{35}$ erg/s (given an assumed distance of $D$=12.3 Mpc), which we have verified by implanting simulated H$α$ emission into our data. We make a quantitative comparison to models of swept-up material stripped from a nondegenerate companion star, and limit the mass of hydrogen that might remain undetected to $M_{\rm H} < 1 \times 10^{-4}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$. A similar analysis of helium star related lines yields a $M_{\rm He} < 5 \times 10^{-4}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$. Taken at face value, these results argue against a nondegenerate H or He-rich companion in Roche lobe overflow as the progenitor of SN 2017cbv. Alternatively, there could be weaknesses in the envelope-stripping and radiative transfer models necessary to interpret the strong H and He flux limits.

HESS J1943+213: An Extreme Blazar Shining Through The Galactic Plane

HESS J1943+213 is a very-high-energy (VHE; $>$100 GeV) $γ$-ray source in the direction of the Galactic Plane. Studies exploring the classification of the source are converging towards its identification as an extreme synchrotron BL Lac object. Here we present 38 hours of VERITAS observations of HESS J1943+213 taken over two years. The source is detected with $\sim$20 standard deviations significance, showing a remarkably stable flux and spectrum in VHE $γ$-rays. Multi-frequency very-long-baseline array (VLBA) observations of the source confirm the extended, jet-like structure previously found in the 1.6 GHz band with European VLBI Network and detect this component in the 4.6 GHz and the 7.3 GHz bands. The radio spectral indices of the core and the jet and the level of polarization derived from the VLBA observations are in a range typical for blazars. Data from VERITAS, $Fermi$-LAT, $Swift$-XRT, FLWO 48$''$ telescope, and archival infrared and hard X-ray observations are used to construct and model the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the source with a synchrotron-self-Compton model. The well-measured $γ$-ray peak of the SED with VERITAS and $Fermi$-LAT provides constraining upper limits on the source redshift. Possible contribution of secondary $γ$-rays from ultra-high-energy cosmic ray-initiated electromagnetic cascades to the $γ$-ray emission is explored, finding that only a segment of the VHE spectrum can be accommodated with this process. A variability search is performed across X-ray and $γ$-ray bands. No statistically significant flux or spectral variability is detected.

A Very High Energy $γ$-Ray Survey towards the Cygnus Region of the Galaxy

We present results from deep observations towards the Cygnus region using 300 hours of very-high-energy (VHE) $γ$-ray data taken with the VERITAS Cherenkov telescope array and over seven years of high-energy $γ$-ray data taken with the Fermi satellite at an energy above 1 GeV. As the brightest region of diffuse $γ$-ray emission in the northern sky, the Cygnus region provides a promising area to probe the origins of cosmic rays. We report the identification of a potential Fermi-LAT counterpart to VER J2031+415 (TeV J2032+4130), and resolve the extended VHE source VER J2019+368 into two source candidates (VER J2018+367* and VER J2020+368*) and characterize their energy spectra. The Fermi-LAT morphology of 3FGL 2021.0+4031e (the Gamma-Cygni supernova remnant) was examined and a region of enhanced emission coincident with VER J2019+407 was identified and jointly fit with the VERITAS data. By modeling 3FGL J2015.6+3709 as two sources, one located at the location of the pulsar wind nebula CTB 87 and one at the quasar QSO J2015+371, a continuous spectrum from 1 GeV to 10 TeV was extracted for VER J2016+371 (CTB 87). An additional 71 locations coincident with Fermi-LAT sources and other potential objects of interest were tested for VHE $γ$-ray emission, with no emission detected and upper limits on the differential flux placed at an average of 2.3% of the Crab Nebula ux. We interpret these observations in a multiwavelength context and present the most detailed $γ$-ray view of the region to date.

Modification of microstructure and micromagnetic properties in Gd-Fe thin films by rapid thermal processing

Impact of rapid thermal processing (RTP) on microstructure and magnetic properties of Gd-Fe thin films have been investigated with a special emphasis to magnetic microstructure. 100 nm thick amorphous Gd-Fe film shows elongated stripe domains with characteristic feature size of 122 nm, which signifies the development of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in this system. RTP at 550^oC for different time intervals viz. 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes induces the crystallization of Fe over the amorphous Gd-Fe matrix. Cross-sectional imaging with transmission electron microscope reveals the presence of Fe nanocrystal and the reacted film-substrate interface, which has also been verified by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. With increasing RTP time, the characteristic size and the threshold height of the topographic feature increases. While the magnetic contrast drops down for the processed films, the increasing threshold height of the nanocrystalline grains results a topography dominated mixed phase in the magnetic force microscopy images. The magnetization measurements clearly indicate a re-orientation of the magnetization direction from perpendicular to the plane of the surface. To unravel the effect of anisotropy modification on domain structure, 3D micromagnetic simulations have been performed, which showed that with 50% reduction of original anisotropy, the magnetization tries to orient in the plane of the surface, whereas an in-plane (along xz plane) tilt angle of 30^o has been estimated to be the threshold for the decrease in perpendicular component of magnetization in the investigated Gd-Fe thin film system.

Superfield Approach to Nilpotency and Absolute Anticommutativity of Conserved Charges: 2D non-Abelian 1-Form Gauge Theory

We exploit the theoretical strength of augmented version of superfield approach (AVSA) to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism to express the nilpotency and absolute anticommutativity properties of the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST conserved charges for the two $(1+1)$-dimensional (2D) non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory (without any interaction with matter fields) in the language of superspace variables, their derivatives and suitable superfields. In the proof of absolute anticommutativity property, we invoke the strength of Curci-Ferrari (CF) condition for the (anti-)BRST charges. No such outside condition/restriction is required in the proof of absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-)co-BRST conserved charges. The latter observation (as well as other observations) connected with (anti-)co-BRST symmetries and corresponding conserved charges are novel results of our present investigation. We also discuss the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST symmetry invariance of the appropriate Lagrangian densities within the framework of AVSA. In addition, we dwell a bit on the derivation of the above fermionic (nilpotent) symmetries by applying the AVSA to BRST formaism where only the (anti-)chiral superfields are used.

A surge of light at the birth of a supernova

It is difficult to establish the properties of massive stars that explode as supernovae. The electromagnetic emission during the first minutes to hours after the emergence of the shock from the stellar surface conveys important information about the final evolution and structure of the exploding star. However, the unpredictable nature of supernova events hinders the detection of this brief initial phase. Here we report the serendipitous discovery of a newly born, normal type IIb supernova (SN 2016gkg), which reveals a rapid brightening at optical wavelengths of about 40 magnitudes per day. The very frequent sampling of the observations allowed us to study in detail the outermost structure of the progenitor of the supernova and the physics of the emergence of the shock. We develop hydrodynamical models of the explosion that naturally account for the complete evolution of the supernova over distinct phases regulated by different physical processes. This result suggests that it is appropriate to decouple the treatment of the shock propagation from the unknown mechanism that triggers the explosion.

Stabilization of Broad Area Semiconductor Laser sources by simultaneous index and pump modulations

We show that the emission of broad area semiconductor amplifiers and lasers can be efficiently stabilized by introducing, two-dimensional periodic modulations simultaneously on both the refractive index and the pump (gain-loss) profiles, in the transverse and longitudinal directions. The interplay between such index and gain-loss modulations efficiently suppresses the pattern forming instabilities, leading to highly stable and bright narrow output beams from such sources. We also determine the stabilization performance of the device as a function of pump current and linewidth enhancement factor.

Spatiotemporal stabilization proof of concept of Broad Area Semiconductor laser sources

We provide a numerical proof of concept of a stabilization mechanism for BAS laser sources. The scheme is based on the simultaneous introduction of in-phase two-dimensional modulations on the refractive index and pump (gain). We numerically proof total stabilization in BAS laser sources, both in space and time. We also examine the interplay between the index and gain modulations and the effect of the slow relaxation of carriers on the stabilization performance.

Self-Organised Fractional Quantisation in a Hole Quantum Wire

We have investigated hole transport in one-dimensional quantum wires in strained germanium two-dimensional layers. The ballistic conductance characteristics show the regular quantised plateaux in units of n2e2/h, where n is an integer. Additionally, new quantised levels are formed which correspond to values of n = 1/4 reducing to 1/8 in the presence of a strong parallel magnetic field which lifts the spin degeneracy but does not quantise the wavefunction. A further plateau is observed corresponding to n = 1/32 which does not change in the presence of a parallel magnetic field. These values indicate that the system is behaving as if charge was fractionalised with values e/2 and e/4, possible mechanisms are discussed.
