Nuclear level density and thermal properties of $^{115}$Sn from neutron evaporation

The nuclear level density of $^{115}$Sn has been measured in an excitation energy range of $\sim $2 - 9 MeV using the experimental neutron evaporation spectra from the $^{115}$In($p,n$)$^{115}$Sn reaction. The experimental level densities were compared with the microscopic Hartree-Fock BCS (HFBCS), Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus combinatorial (HFB+C), and an exact pairing plus independent particle model (EP+IPM) calculations. It is observed that the EP+IPM provides the most accurate description of the experimental data. The thermal properties (entropy and temperature) of $^{115}$Sn have been investigated from the measured level densities. The experimental temperature profile as well as the calculated heat capacity show distinct signatures of a transition from the strongly-paired nucleonic phase to the weakly paired one in this nucleus.

Evidence for the reduction of nuclear level density away from the $β$-stability line

The isospin dependence of nuclear level density has been investigated by analyzing the spectra of evaporated neutrons from excited $^{116}$Sn and $^{116}$Te nuclei. These nuclei are populated via $p$ + $^{115}$In and $^{4}$He + $^{112}$Sn reactions in the excitation energy range of 18 - 26 MeV. Because of low excitation energy, the neutron spectra are predominantly contributed by the first-chance decay leading to the $β$-stable $^{115}$Sn and neutron-deficient $^{115}$Te as residues for the two cases. Theoretical analysis of the experimental spectra have been performed within the Hauser-Feshbach formalism by employing different models of the level density parameter. It is observed that the data could only be explained by the level density parameter that decreases monotonically when the proton number deviates from the $β$-stable value. This is also confirmed by performing a microscopic shell-model calculation with the Wood-Saxon mean field. The results have strong implication on the estimation of the level density of unstable nuclei, and calculation of astrophysical reaction rates relevant to $r$- and $rp$-processes.

Functions that preserve totally bounded sets vis-á-vis stronger notions of continuity

A function between two metric spaces is said to be totally bounded regular if it preserves totally bounded sets. These functions need not be continuous in general. Hence the purpose of this article is to study such functions vis-á-vis continuous functions and functions that are stronger than the continuous functions such as Cauchy continuous functions, some Lipschitz-type functions etc. We also present some analysis on strongly uniformly continuous functions which were first introduced in \cite{[BL2]} and study when these functions are stable under reciprocation.

Signatures of a spin-1/2 cooperative paramagnet in the diluted triangular lattice of Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$

We present a combination of thermodynamic and dynamic experimental signatures of a disorder driven dynamic cooperative paramagnet in a 50% site diluted triangular lattice spin-1/2 system, Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$. Magnetic ordering and spin freezing are absent down to 50 mK, far below the Curie Weiss scale of ~-134 K. We observe scaling collapses of the magnetic field- and temperature-dependent magnetic heat capacity and magnetisation data, respectively, in conformity with expectations from the random singlet physics. Our experiments establish the suppression of any freezing scale, if at all present, by more than three orders of magnitude, opening a plethora of interesting possibilities such as disorder-stabilized long range quantum entangled ground states.

Competing phases and critical behavior in three coupled spinless Luttinger liquids

We study electronic phase competition in a system of three coupled spinless Luttinger liquids using abelian bosonization, together with a perturbative renormalization group (RG) analysis. The scaling procedure generates off-diagonal contributions to the phase stiffness matrix, which require both rescaling as well as large rotations of the fields. These rotations, generally non-abelian in nature, are important for correctly obtaining the dominant electronic orders and critical behavior in different parameter regimes. They generate a coupling between different interaction channels even at the tree-level order in the coupling constant scaling equations. We study competing phases in this system, taking into account the aforementioned rotations, and determine its critical behavior in a variety of interaction parameter regimes where perturbative RG is possible. The phase boundaries are found to be of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type, and we specify the parameter regimes where valley-symmetry breaking, chiral orders, and restoration of $C_{3}$ symmetry may be observed. We discuss experimental systems where our approach and findings may be relevant.

The determination of α-spectroscopic factors and ANC of 16O states using 12C(20Ne,16O)16O reaction at Elab=150 MeV incident energy

The 12C(20Ne,16O)16O α-transfer reaction at Elab=150 MeV is first time used to determine the ANC of the 6.92 MeV and 7.12 MeV states of 16O. The 20Ne+ 12C potential parameters are also obtained from elastic scattering. The direct reaction code FRESCO is used to determine the α-spectroscopy factor (Sα ) of the three states of 16O (6.92 MeV, 7.12 MeV and 11.52 MeV) and ANC of the two states (6.92 MeV and 7.12 MeV) of 16O. The extracted ANC and Sα are compareable to previous measurements.

LiZn$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{8}$: A new geometrically frustrated cluster spin-glass

We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of a new cubic spinel LiZn$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{8}$ (LZVO) through x-ray diffraction, dc and ac susceptibility, magnetic relaxation, aging, memory effect, heat capacity and $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. A Curie-Weiss fit of the dc susceptibility $χ_{\mathrm{dc}}$($\mathit{T}$) yields a Curie-Weiss temperature $\mathrmθ_{\mathrm{CW}}$ = -185 K. This suggests strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions among the magnetic vanadium ions. The dc and ac susceptibility data indicate the spin-glass behavior below a freezing temperature $T_{f}$ $\simeq$ 3 K. The frequency dependence of the $T_{f}$ is characterized by the Vogel-Fulcher law and critical dynamic scaling behavior or power law. From both fitting, we obtained the value of the characteristic angular frequency $ω_{0}$ $\approx$ 3.56$\times$10$^{6}$ Hz, the dynamic exponent $\mathit{zv}$ $\approx$ 2.65, and the critical time constant $τ_{0}$ $\approx$ 1.82$\times$10$^{-6}$ s, which falls in the conventional range for typical cluster spin-glass (CSG) systems. The value of relative shift in freezing temperature $δT_{f}$ $\simeq$ 0.039 supports a CSG ground states. We also found aging phenomena and memory effects in LZVO. The asymmetric response of the magnetic relaxation below $T_{f}$ supports the hierarchical model. Heat capacity data show no long-range or short-range ordering down to 2 K. Only about 25% magnetic entropy change $(ΔS_{\mathrm{m}})$ signifies the presence of strong frustration in the system. The $^{7}$Li NMR spectra show a shift and broadening with decreasing temperature. The spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates show anomalies due to spin freezing around 3 K as the bulk magnetization.

The spin-1/2 coupled tetramer system Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$ _4$ probed by magnetization, specific heat, and $^{31}$P-NMR

We present the synthesis and a detailed investigation of structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline Ba(TiO)Cu$_{4}$(PO$_{4}$)$_{4}$ (BTCPO) via x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and $^{31}$P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements. BTCPO has a 2D layered structure with interlinked Cu$_{4}$O$_{12}$ tetramer units. A broad maximum is observed around 16.5 K in our magnetization data accompanied by a sharp anomaly around $T$ = 9.5 K in the heat capacity. An anomaly at $T$ = 9.5 K is also found in the temperature dependence of the $^{31}$P NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$. A power law behavior for the heat capacity as well as for the $^{31}$P $1/T_1$ below the ordering temperature could be obtained. The $^{31}$P NMR lineshape is asymmetric and the NMR shift tracks the bulk spin-susceptibility. We estimated the isotropic and axial components of the hyperfine coupling tensor to be as the $A^{iso}_{hf} \backsimeq 6794$ $\rm{Oe/μ_{B}}$ and $A^{ax}_{hf} \backsimeq 818$ $\rm{Oe/μ_{B}}$, respectively.

Structural, thermodynamic, and local probe investigations of a honeycomb material Ag$_{3}$LiMn$_{2}$O$_{6}$

The system Ag[Li$_{1/3}$Mn$_{2/3}$]O$_{2}$ belongs to a quaternary 3R-delafossite family and crystallizes in a monoclinic symmetry with space group $C\,2/m$ and the magnetic Mn$^{4+}$($S=3/2$) ions form a honeycomb network in the $ab$-plane. An anomaly around 50 K and the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling (Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_{CW}\sim-51$ K) were inferred from our magnetic susceptibility data. The magnetic specific heat clearly manifests the onset of magnetic ordering in the vicinity of 48\,K and the recovered magnetic entropy, above the ordering temperature, falls short of the expected value, implying the presence of short-range magnetic correlations. The (ESR) line broadening on approaching the ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ could be described in terms of a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) scenario with $T_{\rm KT}=40(1)$ K. $^{7}$Li NMR line-shift probed as a function of temperature tracks the static susceptibility (K$_{iso}$) of magnetically coupled Mn$^{4+}$ ions. The $^{7}$Li spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/$T$$_{1}$) exhibits a sharp decrease below about 50 K. Combining our bulk and local probe measurements, we establish the presence of an ordered ground state for the honeycomb system Ag$_{3}$LiMn$_{2}$O$_{6}$.Our ab-initio electronic structure calculations suggest that in the $ab$-plane, the nearest neighbor (NN) exchange interaction is strong and AFM, while the next NN and the third NN exchange interactions are FM and AFM respectively. In the absence of any frustration the system is expected to exhibit long-range, AFM order, in agreement with experiment.

Chiral $p-$wave superconductivity in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Te: signatures from bound-state spectra and wavefunctions

Surface superconductivity has recently been observed on the (001) surface of the topological crystalline insulator Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Te using point-contact spectroscopy, and theoretically proposed to be of the chiral $p-$wave type. In this paper, we closely examine the conditions for realizing a robust chiral $p-$wave order in this system, rather than conventional $s$-wave superconductivity. Further, within the $p$-wave superconducting phase, we identify parameter regimes where impurity bound (Shiba) states depend crucially on the existence of the chiral $p-$wave order, and distinguish them from other regimes where the chiral $p-$wave order does exist but the impurity-induced subgap bound states cannot be used as evidence for it. Such a distinction can provide an easily realizable experimental test for chiral $p-$wave order in this system. Notably, we have obtained exact analytical expressions for the bound state wavefunctions in point defects, in the chiral $p-$wave superconducting state, and find that instead of the usual $exponential$ decay profile that characterizes bound states, these states decay as a $power-law$ at large distances from the defect. As a possible application of our findings, we also show that the zero-energy Shiba states in point defects possess an internal SU(2) rotational symmetry which enables them to be useful as quantum qubits.

Unconventional magnetism in the 4d$^{4}$ based ($S=1$) honeycomb system Ag$_{3}$LiRu$_{2}$O$_{6}$

We have investigated the thermodynamic and local magnetic properties of the Mott insulating system Ag$_{3}$LiRu$_{2}$O$_{6}$ containing Ru$^{4+}$ (4$d$$^{4}$) for novel magnetism. The material crystallizes in a monoclinic $C2/m$ structure with RuO$_{6}$ octahedra forming an edge-shared two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with limited stacking order along the $c$-direction. The large negative Curie-Weiss temperature ($θ_{CW}$ = -57 K) suggests antiferromagnetic interactions among Ru$^{4+}$ ions though magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity show no indication of magnetic long-range order down to 1.8 K and 0.4 K, respectively. $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift follows the bulk susceptibility between 120-300 K and levels off below 120 K. Together with a power-law behavior in the temperature dependent spin-lattice relaxation rate between 0.2 and 2 K, it suggest dynamic spin correlations with gapless excitations. Electronic structure calculations suggest an $S = 1$ description of the Ru-moments and the possible importance of further neighbour interactions as also bi-quadratic and ring-exchange terms in determining the magnetic properties. Analysis of our $μ$SR data indicates spin freezing below 5 K but the spins remain on the borderline between static and dynamic magnetism even at 20 mK.

Structural and magnetic properties of a new cubic spinel LiRhMnO$_{4}$

We report the structural and magnetic properties of a new system LiRhMnO$_{4}$ (LRMO) through x-ray diffraction, bulk magnetization, heat capacity and $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. LRMO crystallizes in the cubic space group $\mathit{Fd}$$\bar{3}$$\mathit{m}$. From the DC susceptibility data, we obtained the Curie-Weiss temperature $\mathrmθ_{\mathrm{CW}}$ = -26 K and Curie constant $\mathit{C}$ = 1.79 Kcm$^{3}$/mol suggesting antiferromagnetic correlations among the magnetic Mn$^{4+}$ ions with an effective spin $\mathit{S}$ = $\frac{3}{2}$. At $\mathit{H}$ = 50 Oe, the field cooled and zero-field cooled magnetizations bifurcate at a freezing temperature, $T_{f}$ = 4.45 K, which yields the frustration parameter $\mathit{f=\frac{\midθ_{CW}\mid}{T_{f}}}>$5. AC susceptibility, shows a cusp-like peak at around $T_{f}$, with the peak position shifting as a function of the driving frequency, confirming a spin-glass-like transition in LRMO. LRMO also shows typical spin-glass characteristics such as memory effect, aging effect and relaxation. In the heat capacity, there is no sharp anomaly down to 2 K indicative of long-range ordering. The field sweep $^{7}$Li NMR spectra show broadening with decreasing temperature without any spectral line shift. The $^{7}$Li NMR spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates also show anomalies due to spin freezing near $T_{f}$.

More about cofinally complete metric spaces

Metric spaces satisfying properties stronger than completeness and weaker than compactness have been studied by many authors over the years. One such significant family is that of cofinally complete metric spaces. We discuss the relationship between cofinally complete metric spaces and the family of almost uniformly continuous functions, which has recently been introduced by Kyriakos Keremedis in \cite{[K]}. We also discuss several equivalent conditions for metric spaces whose completions are cofinally complete in terms of some geometric functional.

Impact of Building-Level Motor Protection on Power System Transient Behaviors

Protection strategies for transmission and distribution systems have been extensively investigated to facilitate better coordination of physical protection devices. A diverse range of functional motors with dedicated protection schemes are being used more and more in commercial, residential, and industrial buildings. This paper focuses on simulating several of the most popular protection schemes using the ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) model for three-phase and single-phase induction motors in existing commercial buildings connected to typical distribution feeders. To investigate the behaviors of single-phase motors stalling, the actions of motor protection and reconnections, and the impacts of device-level protection on system-level dynamics, we imposed voltage depressions at the head of a feeder fully loaded with functional induction motors. Several distribution feeders are represented in a standard IEEE 39-bus transmission system to simulate fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) and explore mitigation strategies by optimally configuring the building-level motor protection settings.

Fission fragment mass distribution in $^{210}$Po and $^{213}$At

Background: The influence of shell effect on the dynamics of the fusion fission process and it's evolution with excitation energy in the pre-actinide Hg-Pb region in general is a matter of intense research in recent years. In particular, a strong ambiguity remains for the neutron shell closed $^{210}$Po nucleus regarding the role of shell effect in fission around $\approx$ 30 - 40 MeV of excitation energy. Purpose: We have measured the fission fragment mass distribution of $^{210}$Po populated using fusion of $^{4}$He + $^{206}$Pb at different excitation energies and compare the result with recent theoretical predictions as well as with our previous measurement for the same nucleus populated through a different entrance channel. Mass distribution in the fission of the neighbouring nuclei $^{213}$At is also studied for comparison. Methods: Two large area Multi-wire Proportional Counters (MWPC) were used for complete kinematical measurement of the coincident fission fragments. The time of flight differences of the coincident fission fragments were used to directly extract the fission fragment mass distributions. Results: The measured fragment mass distribution for the reactions $^{4}$He + $^{206}$Pb and $^{4}$He + $^{209}$Bi were symmetric and the width of the mass distributions were found to increase monotonically with excitation energy above 36.7 MeV and 32.9 MeV, respectively, indicating the absence of shell effects at the saddle. However, in the fission of $^{210}$Po, we find minor deviation from symmetric mass distributions at the lowest excitation energy (30.8 MeV). Conclusion: Persistence of shell effect in fission fragment mass distribution of $^{210}$Po was observed at the excitation energy $\approx$ 31 MeV as predicted by the theory; at higher excitation energy, however, the present study reaffirms the absence of any shell correction in the fission of $^{210}$Po.

Role of Hund's splitting in electronic phase competition in ${\rm Pb}_{1-x}{\rm Sn}_{x}{\rm Te}$

We study the effect of Hund's splitting of repulsive interactions on electronic phase transitions in the multiorbital topological crystalline insulator Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Te, when the chemical potential is tuned to the vicinity of low-lying Type-II Van Hove singularities. Nontrivial Berry phases associated with the Bloch states impart momentum-dependence to electron interactions in the relevant band. We use a multipatch parquet renormalization group (RG) analysis for studying the competition of different electronic phases, and find that if the dominant fixed-point interactions correspond to antiparallel spin configurations, then a chiral $p$-wave Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov(FFLO) state is favored, otherwise, none of the commonly encountered electronic instabilities occur within the one-loop parquet RG approach.

Fission fragment mass distributions in reactions populating 200Pb

The fission fragment mass distributions have been measured in the reactions 16O + 184W and 19F+ 181Ta populating the same compound nucleus 200Pb? at similar excitation energies. It is found that the widths of the mass distribution increases monotonically with excitation energy, indicating the absence of quasi-fission for both reactions. This is contrary to two recent claims of the presence of quasi-fission in the above mentioned reactions.
