Coupled spin dynamics in epitaxial trilayer heterostructures of ferrimagnetic garnet

The magnetization dynamics of an all-garnet trilayer consisting of Y3Fe5O12/Y3Fe3Al2O12/Y3Fe5O12 (YIG/YIAG/YIG) is analysed. The two magnetic YIG layers, separated by a 4 nm thick paramagnetic YIAG layer, are coupled via dipolar interactions leading to the formation of hybrid magnon modes distinct from the modes found in a single YIG layer. The YIAG exchange-decouples the YIG layers while enabling lattice coherence, maintaining the low damping of the YIG. Both ferromagnetic resonance and micro-Brillouin light scattering measurements were used to characterize the sample and its hybrid dynamics, which showed excellent agreement with an analytical reciprocal space model of spin-wave dynamics and with micromagnetic modeling of a dipolarly coupled magnetic heterostructure.

Reciprocal Space Approach to Dipolarly Coupled Magnetic Hetero-Structures

We present an analytical framework capable of describing spin-waves dynamic in magnetic hetero-structures composed of a pair of exchange-decoupled magnetic layers separated by a nonmagnetic spacer, focusing in particular on garnet-based multilayers. The model captures the formation of collective spin-wave modes, namely symmetric and antisymmetric, arising from dipolar coupling and provides direct access to the dispersion relation of the system and consequent interference phenomena. This formalism establishes a versatile theoretical tool for the predictive design of dipolarly coupled magnonic devices, providing access to their eigenfrequencies and mode shapes.

Observation and control of hybrid spin-wave-Meissner-current transport modes

Superconductors are materials with zero electrical resistivity and the ability to expel magnetic fields known as the Meissner effect. Their dissipationless diamagnetic response is central to magnetic levitation and circuits such as quantum interference devices. Here, we use superconducting diamagnetism to shape the magnetic environment governing the transport of spin waves - collective spin excitations in magnets that are promising on-chip signal carriers - in a thin-film magnet. Using diamond-based magnetic imaging, we observe hybridized spin-wave-Meissner-current transport modes with strongly altered, temperature-tunable wavelengths. We extract the temperature-dependent London penetration depth from the wavelength shifts and realize local control of spin-wave refraction using a focused laser. Our results demonstrate the versatility of superconductor-manipulated spin-wave transport and have potential applications in spin-wave gratings, filters, crystals and cavities.

Finite-element simulations of hysteretic ac losses in a magnetically coated superconducting tubular wire subject to an oscillating transverse magnetic field

Numerical simulations of hysteretic ac losses in a tubular superconductor/paramagnet heterostructure subject to an oscillating transverse magnetic field are performed within the quasistatic approach, calling upon the COMSOL finite-element software package and exploiting magnetostatic-electrostatic analogues. It is shown that one-sided magnetic shielding of a thin, type-II superconducting tube by a coaxial paramagnetic support results in a slight increase of hysteretic ac losses as compared to those for a vacuum environment, when the support is placed inside; a spectacular shielding effect with a possible reduction of hysteretic ac losses by orders of magnitude, however, ensues, depending on the magnetic permeability and the amplitude of the applied magnetic field, when the support is placed outside.
