Exchange-correlation orbital functionals in current-density-functional theory: Application to a quantum dot in magnetic fields

The description of interacting many-electron systems in external magnetic fields is considered in the framework of the optimized effective potential method extended to current-spin-density functional theory. As a case study, a two-dimensional quantum dot in external magnetic fields is investigated. Excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo results is obtained when self-interaction corrected correlation energies from the standard local spin-density approximation are added to exact-exchange results. Full self-consistency within the complete current-spin-density-functional framework is found to be of minor importance.

Parameter Identification of Pressure Sensors by Static and Dynamic Measurements

Fast identification methods of pressure sensors are investigated. With regard to a complete accurate sensor parameter identification two different measurement methods are combined. The approach consists on one hand in performing static measurements - an applied pressure results in a membrane deformation measured interferometrically and the corresponding output voltage. On the other hand optical measurements of the modal responses of the sensor membranes are performed. This information is used in an inverse identification algorithm to identify geometrical and material parameters based on a FE model. The number of parameters to be identified is thereby generally limited only by the number of measurable modal frequencies. A quantitative evaluation of the identification results permits furthermore the classification of processing errors like etching errors. Algorithms and identification results for membrane thickness, intrinsic stress and output voltage will be discussed in this contribution on the basis of the parameter identification of relative pressure sensors.

The Role of Bound States in Time-Dependent Quantum Transport

Charge transport through a nanoscale junction coupled to two macroscopic electrodes is investigated for the situation when bound states are present. We provide numerical evidence that bound states give rise to persistent, non-decaying current oscillations in the junction. We also show that the amplitude of these oscillations can exhibit a strong dependence on the history of the applied potential as well as on the initial equilibrium configuration. Our simulations allow for a quantitative investigation of several transient features. We also discuss the existence of different time-scales and address their microscopic origin.

Orbital currents in the Colle-Salvetti correlation energy functional and the degeneracy problem

Popular density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy typically fail to reproduce the degeneracy of different ground states of open-shell atoms. As a remedy, functionals which explicitly depend on the current density have been suggested. We present an analysis of this problem by investigating functionals that explicitly depend on the Kohn-Sham orbitals. Going beyond the exact-exchange approximation by adding correlation in the form of the Colle-Salvetti functional we show how current-dependent terms enter the Colle-Salvetti expression and their relevance is evaluated. A very good description of the degeneracy of ground-states for atoms of the first and second row of the periodic table is obtained.

Comparison of exact-exchange calculations for solids in current-spin-density- and spin-density-functional theory

The relative merits of current-spin-density- and spin-density-functional theory are investigated for solids treated within the exact-exchange-only approximation. Spin-orbit splittings and orbital magnetic moments are determined at zero external magnetic field. We find that for magnetic (Fe, Co and Ni) and non-magnetic (Si and Ge) solids, the exact-exchange current-spin-density functional approach does not significantly improve the accuracy of the corresponding spin-density functional results.

First-principles approach to Non-Collinear Magnetism: towards Spin-dynamics

A description of non-collinear magnetism in the framework of spin-density functional theory is presented for the exact exchange energy functional which depends explicitly on two-component spinor orbitals. The equations for the effective Kohn-Sham scalar potential and magnetic field are derived within the optimized effective potential (OEP) framework. With the example of a magnetically frustrated Cr monolayer it is shown that the resulting magnetization density exhibits much more non-collinear structure than standard calculations. Furthermore, a time-dependent generalization of the non-collinear OEP method is well suited for an ab-initio description of spin dynamics. We also show that the magnetic moments of solids Fe, Co and Ni are well reproduced.

A time-dependent approach to electron pumping in open quantum systems

We propose a time-dependent approach to investigate the motion of electrons in quantum pump device configurations. The occupied one-particle states are propagated in real time and used to calculate the local electron density and current. An advantage of the present computational scheme is that the same computational effort is required to simulate monochromatic, polychromatic and nonperiodic drivings. Furthermore, initial state dependence and history effects are naturally accounted for. This approach can also be embedded in the framework of time-dependent density functional theory to include electron-electron interactions. In the special case of periodic drivings we combine the Floquet theory with nonequilibrium Green's functions and obtain a general expression for the pumped current in terms of inelastic transmission probabilities. This latter result is used for benchmarking our propagation scheme in the long-time limit. Finally, we discuss the limitations of Floquet-based schemes and suggest our approach as a possible way to go beyond them.

Optimized Effective Potential Method in Current-Spin Density Functional Theory

Current-spin density functional theory (CSDFT) provides a framework to describe interacting many-electron systems in a magnetic field which couples to both spin- and orbital-degrees of freedom. Unlike in usual (spin-) density functional theory, approximations to the exchange-correlation energy based on the model of the uniform electron gas face problems in practical applications. In this work, explicitly orbital-dependent functionals are used and a generalization of the Optimized Effective Potential (OEP) method to the CSDFT framework is presented. A simplifying approximation to the resulting integral equations for the exchange-correlation potentials is suggested. A detailed analysis of these equations is carried out for the case of open-shell atoms and numerical results are given using the exact-exchange energy functional. For zero external magnetic field, a small systematic lowering of the total energy for current-carrying states is observed due to the inclusion of the current in the Kohn-Sham scheme. For states without current, CSDFT results coincide with those of spin density functional theory.

On the degeneracy of atomic states within exact-exchange (spin-) density functional theory

The problem of degenerate ground states of open-shell atoms is investigated in spin-restricted and unrestricted density functional theory using the exact exchange energy functional. For the spin-unrestricted case, spurious energy splittings of the order of 2 to 3 kcal/mol are found for atoms of the second and third period which is larger than the splittings obtained from recently proposed approximate exchange functionals depending explicitly on the current density. In remarkable contrast, for spin-restricted calculations the degeneracy of different atomic ground states is recovered to within less than 0.6 kcal/mol.

Time-dependent quantum transport: A practical scheme using density functional theory

We present a computationally tractable scheme of time-dependent transport phenomena within open-boundary time-dependent density-functional-theory. Within this approach all the response properties of a system are determined from the time-propagation of the set of ``occupied'' Kohn-Sham orbitals under the influence of the external bias. This central idea is combined with an open-boundary description of the geometry of the system that is divided into three regions: left/right leads and the device region (``real simulation region''). We have derived a general scheme to extract the set of initial states in the device region that will be propagated in time with proper transparent boundary-condition at the device/lead interface. This is possible due to a new modified Crank-Nicholson algorithm that allows an efficient time-propagation of open quantum systems. We illustrate the method in one-dimensional model systems as a first step towards a full first-principles implementation. In particular we show how a stationary current develops in the system independent of the transient-current history upon application of the bias. The present work is ideally suited to study ac transport and photon-induced charge-injection. Although the implementation has been done assuming clamped ions, we discuss how it can be extended to include dissipation due to electron-phonon coupling through the combined simulation of the electron-ion dynamics as well as electron-electron correlations.

Harmonic Sums and Mellin Transforms up to two-loop Order

A systematic study is performed on the finite harmonic sums up to level four. These sums form the general basis for the Mellin transforms of all individual functions $f_i(x)$ of the momentum fraction $x$ emerging in the quantities of massless QED and QCD up to two--loop order, as the unpolarized and polarized splitting functions, coefficient functions, and hard scattering cross sections for space and time-like momentum transfer. The finite harmonic sums are calculated explicitly in the linear representation. Algebraic relations connecting these sums are derived to obtain representations based on a reduced set of basic functions. The Mellin transforms of all the corresponding Nielsen functions are calculated.

Optimized Effective Potential Method for Polymers

The optimized effective potential (OEP) method allows for calculation of the local, effective single particle potential of density functional theory for explicitly orbital-dependent approximations to the exchange-correlation energy functional. In the present work the OEP method is used together with the approximation due to Krieger, Li and Iafrate (KLI). We present the first application of this method to polymers. KLI calculations have been performed for the insulating polyethylene and the results have been compared to those from other orbital-dependent potentials. Various properties of the band structure are also calculated. The single-particle band gap strongly depends on the basis set with larger basis sets yielding narrow gaps. For the highest occupied orbital energy the difference is more pronounced. In order to get the right band gap in OEP the exchange contribution to the derivative discontinuity is calculated and added to the Kohn-Sham gap.

Orbital Dependent Exchange-Only Methods for Periodic Systems

Various orbital-dependent exchange-only potentials are studied which exhibit correct long-range asymptotic behaviour. We present the first application of these potentials for polymers and by one of these potentials for molecules. Kohn-Sham type calculations have been carried out for polyethylene in order to make valuable comparison of these potentials with each other as well as with Hartree-Fock and exchange-only LDA methods. The Kohn-Sham band gap obtained with the optimized effective potetial method is corrected with the exchange contribution to the derivative discontinuity of the exchange-correlation potential. The corrected band gap obtained with the Slater's exchange potential is 9.7 eV close to the experiment.
