YSix closely related YbT$_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Co, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir) heavy fermion compounds with large local moment degeneracy

Heavy fermion compounds represent one of the most strongly correlated forms of electronic matter and give rise to low temperature states that range from small moment ordering to exotic superconductivity, both of which are often in close proximity to quantum critical points. These strong electronic correlations are associated with the transfer of entropy from the local moment degrees of freedom to the conduction electrons, and, as such, are intimately related to the low temperature degeneracy of the (originally) moment bearing ion. Here we report the discovery of six closely related Yb-based heavy fermion compounds, YbT$_2$Zn$_{20}$, that are members of the larger family of dilute rare earth bearing compounds: RT$_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Co, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir). This discovery doubles the total number of Yb-based heavy fermion materials. Given these compounds' dilute nature, systematic changes in T only weakly perturb the Yb site and allow for insight into the effects of degeneracy on the thermodynamic and transport properties of these model correlated electron systems.

Thermal expansion and effect of pressure on superconductivity in CuxTiSe2

We report measurements of thermal expansion on a number of polycrystalline CuxTiSe2 samples corresponding to the parts of x - T phase diagram with different ground states, as well as the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature for samples with three different values of Cu-doping. Thermal expansion data suggest that the x - T phase diagram may be more complex than initially reported. T_c data at elevated pressure can be scaled to the ambient pressure CuxTiSe2 phase diagram, however, significantly different scaling factors are needed to accommodate the literature data on the charge density wave transition suppression under pressure.

Separation of energy scales in the kagome antiferromagnet TmAgGe: a magnetic-field-orientation study up to 55 T

TmAgGe is an antiferromagnet in which the spins are confined to distorted kagome-like planes at low temperatures. We report angle-dependent measurements of the magnetization $M$ in fields of up to 55 T that show that there are two distinct and separate energy scales present in TmAgGe, each responsible for a set of step-like metamagnetic transitions; weak exchange interactions and strong crystalline electric field (CEF) interactions. Simulations of $M$ using a three-dimensional, free-energy minimization technique allow us to specify for the first time the physical origin of the metamagnetic transitions in low, in-plane fields. We also show that the transitions observed with the field perpendicular to the kagome planes are associated with the CEF-split multiplet of Tm.

Thermal Expansion and Magnetostriction of the Ising Antiferromagnet TbNi2Ge2

We have measured the linear thermal expansion and magnetostriction of the Ising antiferromagnet TbNi2Ge2 along its c-axis from room temperature to 2 K and in magnetic fields to 14 T. We find a magnetic phase diagram that agrees with earlier work and estimate aspects of its uniaxial pressure dependence. We also find a new high field feature near 10 T which may signal the onset of an additional field-induced phase.

A versatile and compact capacitive dilatometer

We describe the design, construction, calibration, and operation of a relatively simple differential capacitive dilatometer suitable for measurements of thermal expansion and magnetostriction from 300 K to below 1 K with a low-temperature resolution of about 0.05 angstroms. The design is characterized by an open architecture permitting measurements on small samples with a variety of shapes. Dilatometers of this design have operated successfully with a commercial physical property measurement system, with several types of cryogenic refrigeration systems, in vacuum, in helium exchange gas, and while immersed in liquid helium (magnetostriction only) to temperatures of 30 mK and in magnetic fields to 45 T.

High temperature ferromagnetism in GdFe2Zn20: large, local moments embedded in the nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid compound YFe2Zn20

The RFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ series manifests strongly correlated electron behavior for the non-magnetic R = Y member and remarkably high temperature, ferromagnetic ordering ($T_C$ = 86 K) for the local moment bearing R = Gd member (a compound that is less than 5% atomic Gd). In contrast, the isostructural RCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ series manifests a more typical ordering temperature ($T_N$ = 5.7 K for GdCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$) and YCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ does not show signs of correlated electron behavior. Studies of R(Fe$_x$Co$_{1-x}$)$_2$Zn$_{20}$ (R = Gd, Y), combined with bandstructure calculations for the end members, reveal that YFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid and that the remarkably high $T_C$ associated with GdFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is the result of submerging a large local moment into such a highly polarizable matrix. These results indicate that the RFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ series, and more broadly the RT$_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir, Pt) isostructural family of compounds, offer an exceptionally promising phase space for the study of the interaction between local moment and correlated electron effects near the dilute R limit.

Anisotropic thermal expansion and uniaxial pressure dependence of superconducting and magnetic transitions in ErNi2B2C

We present anisotropic thermal expansion measurements on single crystalline ErNi2B2C. All three, superconducting, antiferromagnetic and weak ferromagnetic phase transitions are unambiguously distinguished in the data. Anisotropic uniaxial pressure dependencies of the transitions are estimated based on the Ehrenfest relation, leading to a conclusion, in particular, that weak ferromagnetic state will be suppressed by small, order of several kbar, hydrostatic pressure.

Effects of mixed rare earth occupancy on the low temperature properties of (R, R',R''...)Ni2Ge2 single crystals

Temperature and applied magnetic field dependent magnetization measurements on 34 single crystalline samples of (R, R',R''...)Ni2Ge2 compounds (R, R', R'', etc. being primarily Gd-Lu, Y), were made. These measurements reveal that, despite extremes in local moment anisotropy, the average de Gennes parameter is a remarkably good predictor of the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. In addition, the pronounced metamagnetic phase transitions seen in the low temperature phase of TbNi2Ge2 are found to be remarkably robust to high substitution levels of Gd and 25% substitutions of other heavy rare earths.

Magnetic field induced orientation of superconducting MgB$_2$ crystallites determined by X-ray diffraction

X-ray diffraction studies of fine polycrystalline samples of MgB$_2$ in the superconducting state reveal that crystals orient with their \emph{c}-axis in a plane normal to the direction of the applied magnetic field. The MgB$_2$ samples were thoroughly ground to obtain average grain size 5 - 10 $μ$m in order to increase the population of free single crystal grains in the powder. By monitoring Bragg reflections in a plane normal to an applied magnetic field we find that the powder is textured with significantly stronger (\emph{0,0,l}) reflections in comparison to (\emph{h,k,0}), which remain essentially unchanged. The orientation of the crystals with the \emph{ab}-plane parallel to the magnetic field at all temperatures below $T_c$ demonstrates that the sign of the torque under magnetic field does not alter, in disagreement with current theoretical predictions.

Anisotropic thermal expansion and magnetostriction of YNi$_2$B$_2$C single crystals

We present results of anisotropic thermal expansion and low temperature magnetostriction measurements on YNi$_2$B$_2$C single crystals grown by high temperature flux and floating zone techniques. Quantum oscillations of magnetostriction were observed at low temperatures for $H \| c$ starting at fields significantly below $H_{c2}$ ($H < 0.7 H_{c2}$). Large irreversible, longitudinal magnetostriction was seen in both, in-plane and along the c-axis, directions of the applied magnetic field in the intermediate superconducting state. Anisotropic uniaxial pressure dependencies of $T_c$ were evaluated using results of zero field, thermal expansion measurements.

Effect of field dependent core size on reversible magnetization of high-$κ$ superconductors

The field dependence of the vortex core size $ξ(B)$ is incorporated in the London model, in order to describe reversible magnetization $M(B,T)$ for a number of materials with large Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$. The dependence $ξ(B)$ is directly related to deviations in $M(\ln B)$ from linear behavior prescribed by the standard London model. A simple method to extract $ξ(B)$ from the magnetization data is proposed. For most materials examined, $ξ(B)$ so obtained decreases with increasing field and is in qualitative agreement both with behavior extracted from $μ$SR and small angle neutron scattering data and with that predicted theoretically.

Magnetic field-induced quantum critical point in YbPtIn and YbPt$_{0.98}$In single crystals

Detailed anisotropic (H$\parallel$ab and H$\parallel$c) resistivity and specific heat measurements were performed on online-grown YbPtIn and solution-grown YbPt$_{0.98}$In single crystals for temperatures down to 0.4 K, and fields up to 140 kG; H$\parallel$ab Hall resistivity was also measured on the YbPt$_{0.98}$In system for the same temperature and field ranges. All these measurements indicate that the small change in stoichiometry between the two compounds drastically affects their ordering temperatures (T$_{ord}\approx3.4$ K in YbPtIn, and $\sim2.2$ K in YbPt$_{0.98}$In). Furthermore, a field-induced quantum critical point is apparent in each of these heavy fermion systems, with the corresponding critical field values of YbPt$_{0.98}$In (H$^{ab}_c$ around 35-45 kG and H$^{c}_c\approx120$ kG) also reduced compared to the analogous values for YbPtIn (H$^{ab}_c\approx60$ kG and H$^{c}_c>140$ kG)

Superconducting and Normal State Properties of Neutron Irradiated MgB2

We have performed a systematic study of the evolution of the superconducting and normal state properties of neutron irradiated MgB$_2$ wire segments as a function of fluence and post exposure annealing temperature and time. All fluences used suppressed the transition temperature, Tc, below 5 K and expanded the unit cell. For each annealing temperature Tc recovers with annealing time and the upper critical field, Hc2(T=0), approximately scales with Tc. By judicious choice of fluence, annealing temperature and time, the Tc of damaged MgB2 can be tuned to virtually any value between 5 and 39 K. For higher annealing temperatures and longer annealing times the recovery of Tc tends to coincide with a decrease in the normal state resistivity and a systematic recovery of the lattice parameters.

Field-induced non-Fermi-liquid resistivity of stoichiometric YbAgGe single crystals

We have investigated hexagonal YbAgGe down to 70 mK by measuring the magnetic-field and temperature dependence of the resistivity rho of single crystals in fields up to 14 T. Our results extend the H-T phase diagram to the lowest temperatures for H applied in the basal plane and along the c-axis. In particular, critical fields for the suppression of several magnetic phases are determined. The temperature dependence of rho(T) is unusual: whereas at low H, rho(T) reveals a temperature exponent n>=2, we find 1<=n<1.5 and strong enhancement of the temperature dependence of rho(T) close to and beyond the highest critical field for each field direction. For H applied in the basal plane, at high fields a conventional T^2 dependence of rho(T) is reached above 10 T accompanied by an approach to saturation of a strong drop in the residual resistivity. YbAgGe appears to be one of few Yb-based stoichiometric systems, where quantum-critical behaviour may be induced by a magnetic field.

Low Temperature Thermodynamic Properties of the Heavy Fermion Compound YbAgGe Close to the Field-Induced Quantum Critical Point

We present temperature and field dependent heat capacity and magnetization data taken at temperatures down to 50 mK and in an applied magnetic field up to 11.5 Tesla for YbAgGe, a heavy-fermion compound with a field induced quantum critical point. These data clearly indicate that the same electronic degrees of freedom are responsible for the features seen in both specific heat and magnetization data. In addition, they further refine the different boundaries suggested for the H - T phase diagram of YbAgGe through previous, magneto-transport measurements, and allow for further understanding of different phases on the H - T phase diagram, in particular, clearly disconnecting the field-induced quantum critical point in YbAgGe from any sort of saturation of the Yb moment in higher applied magnetic field.

Direct observation of Fe spin reorientation in single crystalline YbFe6Ge6

We have grown single crystals of YbFe6Ge6 and LuFe6Ge6 and characterized their anisotropic behaviour through low field magnetic susceptibility, field-dependent magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity measurements. The Yb+3 valency is confirmed by LIII XANES measurements. YbFe6Ge6 crystals exhibit a field-dependent, sudden reorientation of the Fe spins at about 63 K, a unique effect in the RFe6Ge6 family (R = rare earths) where the Fe ions order anti-ferromagnetically with Neel temperatures above 450 K and the R ions' magnetism appears to behave independently. The possible origins of this unusual behaviour of the ordered Fe moments in this compound are discussed.

Electronic structure and anisotropic transport properties in hexagonal YPtIn and LuAgGe ternary compounds

We present anisotropic, zero applied magnetic field, temperature dependent resistivity measurements on hexagonal, non-magnetic, YPtIn and LuAgGe single crystals. For these materials the in-plane resistivity, $ρ_{ab}$, is significantly higher than the $c$ - axis one, $ρ_c$, with $ρ_{ab}/ρ_c \approx 1.4$ for YPtIn and $\approx 4.2 - 4.7$ for LuAgGe. The connection between the electronic structure and the anisotropic transport properties is discussed using density functional calculations that link the observed anisotropy with a specific shape of Fermi surface and anisotropy of the Fermi velocities.

Field-Dependent Hall Effect in Single Crystal Heavy Fermion YbAgGe below 1K

We report the results of a low temperature (T >= 50 mK) and high field (H <= 180 kOe) study of the Hall resistivity in single crystals of YbAgGe, a heavy fermion compound that demonstrates field-induced non-Fermi-liquid behavior near its field-induced quantum critical point. Distinct features in the anisotropic, field-dependent Hall resistivity sharpen on cooling down and at the base temperature are close to the respective critical fields for the field-induced quantum critical point. The field range of the non-Fermi-liquid region decreases on cooling but remains finite at the base temperature with no indication of its conversion to a point for T -> 0. At the base temperature, the functional form of the field-dependent Hall coefficient is field direction dependent and complex beyond existing simple models thus reflecting the multi-component Fermi surface of the material and its non-trivial modification at the quantum critical point.
