A Note on Efimov Nonlocal and Nonpolynomial Quantum Scalar Field Theory

In frames of the nonlocal and nonpolynomial quantum theory of the one component scalar field in $D$-dimensional spacetime, stated by Gariy Vladimirovich Efimov, the expansion of the $\mathcal{S}$-matrix is revisited for different interaction Lagrangians and for some kinds of Gaussian propagators modified by different ultraviolet form factors $F$ which depend on some length parameter $l$. The expansion of the $\mathcal{S}$-matrix is of the form of a grand canonical partition function of some $D+N$-dimensional ($N\geq 1$) classical gas with interaction. The toy model of the realistic quantum field theory (QFT) is considered where the $\mathcal{S}$-matrix is calculated in closed form. Then, the functional Schwinger-Dyson and Schrödinger equations for the $\mathcal{S}$-matrix in Efimov representation are derived. These equations play a central role in the present paper. The functional Schwinger-Dyson and Schrödinger equations in Efimov representation do not involve explicit functional derivatives but involve a shift of the field which is the $\mathcal{S}$-matrix argument. The asymptotic solutions of the Schwinger-Dyson equation are obtained in different limits. Also, the solution is found in one heuristic case allowing us to study qualitatively the behavior of the $\mathcal{S}$-matrix for an arbitrary finite value of its argument. Self-consistency equations, which arise during the process of derivation, are of a great interest. Finally, in the light of the discussion of QFT functional equations, ultraviolet form factors and extra dimensions, the connection with functional (in terms of the Wilson-Polchinski and Wetterich-Morris functional equations) and holographic renormalization groups (in terms of the functional Hamilton-Jacobi equation) is made. In addition the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is formulated in an unconventional way.

Quantum Gases of Dipoles, Quadrupoles and Octupoles in Gross-Pitaevskii Formalism with Form Factor

Classical and quantum field theory of dipolar, axisymmetric quadrupolar and octupolar Bose gases is considered within a general approach. Dipole, axisymmetric quadrupole and octupole interaction potentials in the momentum representation are calculated. These results clearly demonstrate attraction and repulsion areas in corresponding gases. Then the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation, which plays a key role in the present paper, is derived from the corresponding functional. The zoology of the form factors appearing in GP equation is studied in details. The classes of proper for the description of spatially non-uniform condensates form factors are chosen. In the Thomas-Fermi approximation a general solution of the GP equation with a quasilocal form factor is obtained. This solution has an interesting form in terms of a double rapidly converging series that universally includes all the interactions considered. An important analysis of the condensate stability, in other words the study of condensate excitations, is also performed in this paper. In the Gaussian approximation (from the GP functional), a functional describing the perturbations of the condensate is derived in details. For a probe wave function in the form of a plane wave, a spectrum of Bogoliubov excitations was obtained, from which an equation describing the threshold momentum for the emergence of instability was derived. An important result of this paper is the dependence of the threshold on the momentum of a stationary condensate. For completeness of the presentation, the approximating expression in the form of a rapidly converging series is obtained for the corresponding dependence. Finally, in the conclusion a quantum hydrodynamic theory for dipolar, axisymmetric quadrupolar and octupolar gases is briefly presented, giving a clue to the experimental determination of the form factors.

On Functional Hamilton-Jacobi and Schrödinger Equations and Functional Renormalization Group

Functional Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equation, the central equation of the holographic renormalization group (HRG), functional Schrödinger equation, and generalized Wilson-Polchinski (WP) equation, the central equation of the functional renormalization group (FRG), are considered in $D$-dimensional coordinate and abstract (formal) spaces. Instead of extra coordinates or an FRG scale, a holographic scalar field $\varLambda$ is introduced. The extra coordinate (or scale) is obtained as the amplitude of delta-field or constant field configurations of $\varLambda$. A rigorous derivation of corresponding integro-differential equation hierarchies for Green functions (GFs) as well as the integration formula for functionals are given. Using the integration formula, the functional (arbitrary configuration of $\varLambda$) solution for the translation-invariant two-particle GF is obtained. For the delta-field and the constant field configurations of $\varLambda$ this solution is studied in detail. Separable solution for two-particle GF is briefly discussed. Then, rigorous derivation of the quantum HJ and the continuity functional equations from the functional Schrödinger equation as well as the semiclassical approximation are given. An iterative procedure for solving the functional Schrödinger equation is suggested. Translation-invariant solutions for various GFs (both hierarchies) on delta-field configuration of $\varLambda$ are obtained. In context of continuity equation and open quantum field systems an optical potential is briefly discussed. Modes coarse graining growth functional for WP functional is analyzed. An approximation scheme is proposed for the generalized WP equation. With an optimized regulator translation-invariant solutions for two-particle and four-particle amputated GFs from approximated WP hierarchy are found analytically.

Nonlocal Scalar Quantum Field Theory: Functional Integration, Basis Functions Representation and Strong Coupling Expansion

Nonlocal QFT of one-component scalar field $φ$ in $D$-dimensional Euclidean spacetime is considered. The generating functional (GF) of complete Green functions $\mathcal{Z}$ as a functional of external source $j$, coupling constant $g$, and spatial measure $dμ$ is studied. An expression for GF $\mathcal{Z}$ in terms of the abstract integral over the primary field $φ$ is given. An expression for GF $\mathcal{Z}$ in terms of integrals over the primary field and separable Hilbert space (HS) is obtained by means of a separable expansion of the free theory inverse propagator $\hat{L}$ over the separable HS basis. The classification of functional integration measures $\mathcal{D}\left[φ\right]$ is formulated, according to which trivial and two nontrivial versions of GF $\mathcal{Z}$ are obtained. Nontrivial versions of GF $\mathcal{Z}$ are expressed in terms of $1$-norm and $0$-norm, respectively. The definition of the $0$-norm generator $\varPsi$ is suggested. Simple cases of sharp and smooth generators are considered. Expressions for GF $\mathcal{Z}$ in terms of integrals over the separable HS with new integrands are obtained. For polynomial theories $φ^{2n},\, n=2,3,4,\ldots,$ and for the nonpolynomial theory $\sinh^{4}φ$, integrals over the separable HS in terms of a power series over the inverse coupling constant $1/\sqrt{g}$ for both norms ($1$-norm and $0$-norm) are calculated. Critical values of model parameters when a phase transition occurs are found numerically. A generalization of the theory to the case of the uncountable integral over HS is formulated. A comparison of two GFs $\mathcal{Z}$, one in the case of uncountable HS integral and one obtained using the Parseval-Plancherel identity, is given.

$\mathcal{S}$-Matrix of Nonlocal Scalar Quantum Field Theory in the Representation of Basis Functions

Nonlocal quantum theory of one-component scalar field in $D$-dimensional Euclidean spacetime is studied in representations of $\mathcal{S}$-matrix theory for both polynomial and nonpolynomial interaction Lagrangians. The theory is formulated on coupling constant $g$ in the form of an infrared smooth function of argument $x$ for space without boundary. Nonlocality is given by evolution of Gaussian propagator for the local free theory with ultraviolet form factors depending on ultraviolet length parameter $l$. By representation of the $\mathcal{S}$-matrix in terms of abstract functional integral over primary scalar field, the $\mathcal{S}$ form of a grand canonical partition function is found. And, by expression of $\mathcal{S}$-matrix in terms of the partition function, the representation for $\mathcal{S}$ in terms of basis functions is obtained. Derivations are given for discrete case where basis functions are Hermite functions, and for continuous case where basis functions are trigonometric functions. The obtained expressions for the $\mathcal{S}$-matrix are investigated within the framework of variational principle based on Jensen inequality. Equations with separable kernels satisfied by variational function $q$ are found and solved, yielding results for both the polynomial theory $φ^{4}$ and the nonpolynomial sine-Gordon theory. A new definition of the $\mathcal{S}$-matrix is proposed to solve additional divergences which arise in application of Jensen inequality for the continuous case. Analytical results are illustrated numerically. For simplicity of numerical calculation: the $D=1$ case is considered, and propagator for the free theory $G$ is in the form of Gaussian function typically in the Virton-Quark model. The formulation for nonlocal QFT in momentum $k$ space of extra dimensions with subsequent compactification into physical spacetime is discussed.

On Functional and Holographic Renormalization Group Methods in Stochastic Theory of Turbulence

A nonlocal quantum-field model is constructed for the system of hydrodynamic equations for incompressible viscous fluid (the stochastic Navier--Stokes (NS) equation and the continuity equation). This model is studied by the following two mutually parallel methods: the Wilson--Polchinski functional renormalization group method (FRG), which is based on the exact functional equation for the generating functional of amputated connected Green's functions (ACGF), and the Heemskerk--Polchinski holographic renormalization group method (HRG), which is based on the functional Hamilton--Jacobi (HJ) equation for the holographic boundary action. Both functional equations are equivalent to infinite hierarchies of integro-differential equations (coupled in the FRG case) for the corresponding families of Green's functions (GF). The RG-flow equations can be derived explicitly for two-particle functions. Because the HRG-flow equation is closed (contains only a two-particle GF), the explicit analytic solutions are obtained for the two-particle GF (in terms of the modified Bessel functions $I$ and $K$) in the framework of the minimal holographic model and its simple generalization, and these solutions have a remarkable property of minimal dependence on the details of the random force correlator (the function of the energy pumping into the system). The restrictions due to the time-gauged Galilean symmetry present in this theory, the problem of choosing the pumping function, and some generalizations of the standard RG-flow procedures are discussed in detail. Finally, the question of whether the HRG-solutions can be used to solve the FRG-flow equation for the two-particle GF (in particular, the relationship between the regulators in the two methods) is studied.

Cooper pairing of electrons and holes in graphene bilayer: Correlation effects

Cooper pairing of spatially separated electrons and holes in graphene bilayer is studied beyond the mean-field approximation. Suppression of the screening at large distances, caused by appearance of the gap, is considered self-consistently. A mutual positive feedback between appearance of the gap and enlargement of the interaction leads to a sharp transition to correlated state with greatly increased gap above some critical value of the coupling strength. At coupling strength below the critical, this correlation effect increases the gap approximately by a factor of two. The maximal coupling strength achievable in experiments is close to the critical value. This indicated importance of correlation effects in closely-spaced graphene bilayers at weak substrate dielectric screening. Another effect beyond mean-field approximation considered is an influence of vertex corrections on the pairing, which is shown to be very weak.

Electron-electron and electron-hole pairing in graphene structures

The superconducting pairing of electrons in doped graphene due to in-plane and out-of-plane phonons is considered. It is shown that the structure of the order parameter in the valley space substantially affects conditions of the pairing. Electron-hole pairing in graphene bilayer in the strong coupling regime is also considered. Taking into account retardation of the screened Coulomb pairing potential shows a significant competition between the electron-hole direct attraction and their repulsion due to virtual plasmons and single-particle excitations.

A new type of bound magnetic polaron state: the formation of long-range spin distortions

The structure of bound magnetic polarons in an antiferromagnetic matrix is studied in the framework of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Kondo-lattice models in the double exchange limit (J_H >> t). The conduction electron is bound by a nonmagnetic donor impurity and forms a ferromagnetic core of the size about the electron localization length (bound magnetic polaron). We find that the magnetic polaron produces rather long-range extended spin distortions of the antiferromagnetic background around the core. In a wide range of distances, these distortions decay as 1/r^2 and 1/r^4 in 2D and 3D cases, respectively. In addition, the magnetization of the core is smaller than its saturation value. Such a magnetic polaron state is favorable in energy in comparison to usually considered one (saturated core without extended distortions).
