High dynamic range imaging with a single-mode pupil remapping system : a self-calibration algorithm for redundant interferometric arrays

The correction of the influence of phase corrugation in the pupil plane is a fundamental issue in achieving high dynamic range imaging. In this paper, we investigate an instrumental setup which consists in applying interferometric techniques on a single telescope, by filtering and dividing the pupil with an array of single-mode fibers. We developed a new algorithm, which makes use of the fact that we have a redundant interferometric array, to completely disentangle the astronomical object from the atmospheric perturbations (phase and scintillation). This self-calibrating algorithm can also be applied to any - diluted or not - redundant interferometric setup. On an 8 meter telescope observing at a wavelength of 630 nm, our simulations show that a single mode pupil remapping system could achieve, at a few resolution elements from the central star, a raw dynamic range up to 10^6; depending on the brightness of the source. The self calibration algorithm proved to be very efficient, allowing image reconstruction of faint sources (mag = 15) even though the signal-to-noise ratio of individual spatial frequencies are of the order of 0.1. We finally note that the instrument could be more sensitive by combining this setup with an adaptive optics system. The dynamic range would however be limited by the noise of the small, high frequency, displacements of the deformable mirror.

High dynamic range imaging by pupil single-mode filtering and remapping

Because of atmospheric turbulence, obtaining high angular resolution images with a high dynamic range is difficult even in the near infrared domain of wavelengths. We propose a novel technique to overcome this issue. The fundamental idea is to apply techniques developed for long baseline interferometry to the case of a single-aperture telescope. The pupil of the telescope is broken down into coherent sub-apertures each feeding a single-mode fiber. A remapping of the exit pupil allows interfering all sub-apertures non-redundantly. A diffraction-limited image with very high dynamic range is reconstructed from the fringe pattern analysis with aperture synthesis techniques, free of speckle noise. The performances of the technique are demonstrated with simulations in the visible range with an 8 meter telescope. Raw dynamic ranges of 1:$10^6$ can be obtained in only a few tens of seconds of integration time for bright objects.

Velocity Dispersion of Excited H2

We present a study of the high rotational bands (J > 2) of H2 toward 4 early type galactic stars: HD 73882, HD 192639, HD 206267, and HD 207538. In each case, the velocity dispersion - characterized by the spectrum fitting parameter b - increases with the level of excitation, a phenomenon that has previously been detected by the Copernicus and IMAPS observatories. In particular, we show with 4 sigma confidence that for HD 192639 it is not possible to fit all J levels with a single b value, and that higher b values are needed for the higher levels. The amplitude of the line broadening, which can be as high as 10 km s^-1, makes explanations such as inhomogeneous spatial distribution unlikely. We investigate a mechanism in which the broadening is due to the molecules that are rotationally excited through the excess energy acquired after their formation on a grain (H2-formation pumping). We show that different dispersions would be a natural consequence of this mechanism. We note however that such process would require a formation rate 10 times higher then what was inferred from other observations. In view of the difficulty to account for the velocity dispersion as thermal broadening (T would be around 10,000 K), we conclude then that we are most certainly observing some highly turbulent warm layer associated with the cold diffuse cloud. Embedded in a magnetic field, it could be responsible for the high quantities of CH+ measured in the cold neutral medium.

Deuterated molecular hydrogen in the Galactic ISM. New observations along seven translucent sightlines

We present column density measurements of the HD molecule in the interstellar gas toward 17 Galactic stars. The values for the seven most heavily reddened sightlines, with E(B-V) = 0.38-0.72, are derived from observations with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The other ten values are from a reanalysis of spectra obtained with Copernicus. In all cases, high-resolution ground-based observations of KI and/or the CH molecule were used to constrain the gas velocity structure and to correct for saturation effects. Comparisons of the column densities HD, CH, CN, and KI in these 17 sightlines indicate that HD is most tightly correlated with CH. Stringent lower limits to the interstellar D/H ratio, derived from the HD/2H2 ratio, range from 3.7 10^(-7) to 4.3 10^(-6). Our results also suggest that the HD/H2 ratio increases with the molecular fraction f(H2) and that the interstellar D/H ratio might be obtained from HD by probing clouds with f(H2) = 1. Finally, we note an apparent relationship between the molecular fractions of hydrogen and deuterium.

Tiny-Scale Molecular Structures in the Magellanic Clouds (Part 1)

We report on the {\small FUSE} detections of the HD and CO molecules {\bf on the lines of sight towards three Large Magellanic stars}: Sk $-$67D05, Sk $-$68D135, and Sk $-$69D246. HD is also detected for the first time {\bf on the lines of sight towards two Small Magellanic Cloud stars}: AV 95 and Sk 159. While the HD and CO abundances are expected to be lower in the Large Magellanic Cloud where molecular fractions are a third of the Galactic value and where the photodissociation flux is up to thousands times larger, we report an average HD/H$_2$ ratio of 1.4$\pm$0.5 ppm and CO/H$_2$ ratio ranging from 0.8 to 2.7 ppm similar to the Galactic ones. We tentatively identify a deuterium reservoir (hereafter D--reservoir) towards the Small Magellanic Cloud, along the light path to AV 95. We derive a D/H ratio ranging from 1. 10$^{-6}$ to 1.1 10$^{-5}$.

FUSE Survey of the Local Interstellar Medium within 200 Parsec

We present FUSE observations of the interstellar gas toward 30 white dwarf and 1 subdwarf (SdO) stars. These sightlines probe the Local Bubble (LB) and the local interstellar medium (LISM) near the LB. Our survey detected only diffuse H_2 molecular clouds along six sightlines. There is no evidence from this study that H_2 exists well inside the perimeter of the LB. The kinematical temperature for H_2 is less than the usual temperature observed in the local interstellar clouds, implying different gas phases in the LISM. The relative abundance ratios of Si II, P II, and Fe II give insight about the dust content. These ratios vary, but are similar to the depletion patterns observed in warm and halo diffuse clouds in more distant sightlines in the Galaxy. The N I/O I and Ar I/O I ratios are significantly subsolar within the LB. Outside the LB a larger scatter is observed from subsolar to solar. Because Ar and N are only weakly depleted into dust grains if at all, the deficiencies of their neutral forms are likely due to photoionization. The evidence for significant ionization of N (and hence Ar) is strengthened by the detection and measurement of N II, which is a dominant ion for this element toward many sightlines. These observations imply that photoionization is the main ionization mechanism in the LISM and do not support the existence of a highly ionized condition in the past. In view of the variations observed in the different atomic and ionic ratios, the photoionization conditions vary significantly in the LB and the LISM. [Abridged.]

Oxygen Gas Phase Abundance Revisited

We present new measurements of the interstellar gas-phase oxygen abundance along the sight lines towards 19 early-type galactic stars at an average distance of 2.6 kpc. We derive O {\small I} column densities from {\it HST}/STIS observations of the weak 1355 Åintersystem transition. We derive total hydrogen column densities [N(H {\small I})+2N(H$_2$)] using {\it HST}/STIS observations of \lya and {\it FUSE} observations of molecular hydrogen. The molecular hydrogen content of these sight lines ranges from f(H$_2$) = 2N(H$_2$)/[N(H {\small I})+2N(H$_2$)] = 0.03 to 0.47. The average $ $ of 6.3$\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ mag$^{-1}$ with a standard deviation of 15% is consistent with previous surveys. The mean oxygen abundance along these sight lines, which probe a wide range of galactic environments in the distant ISM, is 10$^6$ \oh = $408 \pm 13$ (1 $σ$ in the mean). %$({\rm O/H})_{gas} = 408 \pm 14$(1 $σ$). We see no evidence for decreasing gas-phase oxygen abundance with increasing molecular hydrogen fraction and the relative constancy of \oh suggests that the component of dust containing the oxygen is not readily destroyed. We estimate that, if 60% of the dust grains are resilient against destruction by shocks, the distant interstellar total oxygen abundance can be reconciliated with the solar value derived from the most recent measurements %by Holweger and by Allende Prieto, Lambert & Asplund: of 10$^6$ \oh$_\odot$ = 517 $\pm$ 58 (1 $σ$). We note that the smaller oxygen abundances derived for the interstellar gas within 500 pc %by Meyer, Cardelli & Jura or from nearby B star surveys are consistent with a local elemental deficit.

Quasi-molecular lines in Lyman wings of cool DA white dwarfs; Application to FUSE observations of G231-40

We present new theoretical calculations of the total line profiles of Lyman alpha and Lyman beta which include perturbations by both neutral hydrogen AND protons and all possible quasi-molecular states of H_2 and H_2^+. They are used to improve theoretical modeling of synthetic spectra for cool DA white dwarfs. We compare them with FUSE observation of G231-40. The appearance of the line wings between Lyman alpha and Lyman beta is shown to be sensitive to the relative abundance of hydrogen ions and neutral atoms, and thereby to provide a temperature diagnostic for stellar atmospheres and laboratory plasmas.

Deuterium abundance toward G191-B2B: Results from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) Mission

High-resolution spectra of the hot white dwarf G191-B2B, covering the wavelength region 905-1187A, were obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). This data was used in conjunction with existing high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope STIS observations to evaluate the total HI, DI, OI and NI column densities along the line of sight. Previous determinations of N(DI) based upon GHRS and STIS observations were controversial due to the saturated strength of the DI Lyman-alpha line. In the present analysis the column density of DI has been measured using only the unsaturated Lyman-beta and Lyman-gamma lines observed by FUSE. A careful inspection of possible systematic uncertainties tied to the modeling of the stellar continuum or to the uncertainties in the FUSE instrumental characteristics has been performed. The column densities derived are: log N(DI) = 13.40 +/-0.07, log N(OI) = 14.86 +/-0.07, and log N(NI) = 13.87 +/-0.07 quoted with 2-sigma uncertainties. The measurement of the HI column density by profile fitting of the Lyman-alpha line has been found to be unsecure. If additional weak hot interstellar components are added to the three detected clouds along the line of sight, the HI column density can be reduced quite significantly, even though the signal-to-noise ratio and spectral resolution at Lyman-alpha are excellent. The new estimate of N(HI) toward G191-B2B reads: log N(HI) = 18.18 +/-0.18 (2-sigma uncertainty), so that the average (D/H) ratio on the line of sight is: (D/H) = 1.66 (+0.9/-0.6) *10^-5 (2-sigma uncertainty).

Deuterium Abundance Toward WD2211-495: Results from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) Mission

We present a deuterium abundance analysis of the line of sight toward the white dwarf WD2211-495 observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Numerous interstellar lines are detected on the continuum of the stellar spectrum. A thorough analysis was performed through the simultaneous fit of interstellar absorption lines detected in the four FUSE channels of multiple observations with different slits. We excluded all saturated lines in order to reduce possible systematic errors on the column density measurements. We report the determination of the average interstellar D/O and D/N ratios along this line of sight at the 95% confidence level: D/O = 4.0 +/-1.2 *10^-2; D/N = 4.4 +/-1.3 *10^-1. In conjunction with FUSE observations of other nearby sight lines, the results of this study will allow a deeper understanding of the present-day abundance of deuterium in the local interstellar medium and its evolution with time.
