A Statistical Study on Force-Freeness of Solar Magnetic Fields in the Photosphere

It is an indisputable fact that solar magnetic fields are force-free in the corona, where force free fields means that current and magnetic fields are parallel and there is no Lorentz force in the fields. While the force-free extent of photospheric magnetic fields remains open. In this paper, the statistical results about it is given. The vector magnetograms (namely, $B_{x}$, $B_{y}$ and $B_{z}$ in heliocentric coordinates) are employed, which are deduced and calibrated from Stokes spectra, observed by Solar Magnetic Field Telescope (SMFT) at Huairou Solar Observing Station (HSOS) are used. We study and calibrated 925 magnetograms calibrated by two sets of calibration coefficients, that indicate the relations between magnetic fields and the strength of Stokes spectrum and can be calculated either theoretically or empirically. The statistical results show that the majority of active region magnetic fields are not consistent with the force-free model.

Abundances of neutron-capture elements in G 24-25. A halo-population CH subgiant

The differences between the neutron-capture element abundances of halo stars are important to our understanding of the nucleosynthesis of elements heavier than the iron group. We present a detailed abundance analysis of carbon and twelve neutron-capture elements from Sr up to Pb for a peculiar halo star G24-25 with [Fe/H] = -1.4 in order to probe its origin. The equivalent widths of unblended lines are measured from high resolution NOT/FIES spectra and used to derive abundances based on Kurucz model atmospheres. In the case of CH, Pr, Eu, Gd, and Pb lines, the abundances are derived by fitting synthetic profiles to the observed spectra. Abundance analyses are performed both relative to the Sun and to a normal halo star G16-20 that has similar stellar parameters as G24-25. We find that G24-25 is a halo subgiant star with an unseen component. It has large overabundances of carbon and heavy s-process elements and mild overabundances of Eu and light s-process elements. This abundance distribution is consistent with that of a typical CH giant. The abundance pattern can be explained by mass transfer from a former asymptotic giant branch component, which is now a white dwarf.

Error Analysis regarding the calculation of NLFF Field

Field extrapolation is an alternative method to study chromospheric and coronal magnetic fields. In this paper, two semi-analytical solutions of force- free fields (Low and Lou, 1990) have been used to study the errors of nonlin- ear force-free (NLFF) fields based on force-free factor alpha. Three NLFF fields are extrapolated by approximate vertical integration (AVI) Song et al. (2006), boundary integral equation (BIE) Yan and Sakurai (2000) and optimization (Opt.) Wiegelmann (2004) methods. Compared with the first semi-analytical field, it is found that the mean values of absolute relative standard deviations (RSD) of alpha along field lines are about 0.96-1.05, 0.94-1.07 and 0.46-0.72 for AVI, BIE and Opt. fields, respectively. While for the second semi-analytical field, they are about 0.80-1.02, 0.63-1.34 and 0.33-0.55 for AVI, BIE and Opt. fields, respectively. As for the analytical field, the calculation error of hjRSDji is about 0.1 » 0.2. It is also found that RSD does not apparently depend on the length of field line. These provide the basic estimation on the deviation of extrapolated field obtained by proposed methods from the real force-free field.

Combined Limits on WIMPs from the CDMS and EDELWEISS Experiments

The CDMS and EDELWEISS collaborations have combined the results of their direct searches for dark matter using cryogenic germanium detectors. The total data set represents 614 kg.d equivalent exposure. A straightforward method of combination was chosen for its simplicity before data were exchanged between experiments. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-section. For a WIMP mass of 90 GeV/c^2, where this analysis is most sensitive, a cross-section of 3.3 x 10^{-44} cm^2 is excluded at 90% CL. At higher WIMP masses, the combination improves the individual limits, by a factor 1.6 above 700 GeV/c^2. Alternative methods of combining the data provide stronger constraints for some ranges of WIMP masses and weaker constraints for others.

Search for inelastic dark matter with the CDMS II experiment

Results are presented from a reanalysis of the entire five-tower data set acquired with the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory, with an exposure of 969 kg-days. The analysis window was extended to a recoil energy of 150 keV, and an improved surface-event background-rejection cut was defined to increase the sensitivity of the experiment to the inelastic dark matter (iDM) model. Three dark matter candidates were found between 25 keV and 150 keV. The probability to observe three or more background events in this energy range is 11%. Because of the occurrence of these events the constraints on the iDM parameter space are slightly less stringent than those from our previous analysis, which used an energy window of 10-100 keV.

Results from a Low-Energy Analysis of the CDMS II Germanium Data

We report results from a reanalysis of data from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Data taken between October 2006 and September 2008 using eight germanium detectors are reanalyzed with a lowered, 2 keV recoil-energy threshold, to give increased sensitivity to interactions from Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with masses below ~10 GeV/c^2. This analysis provides stronger constraints than previous CDMS II results for WIMP masses below 9 GeV/c^2 and excludes parameter space associated with possible low-mass WIMP signals from the DAMA/LIBRA and CoGeNT experiments.

Order statistics and heavy-tail distributions for planetary perturbations on Oort cloud comets

This paper tackles important aspects of comets dynamics from a statistical point of view. Existing methodology uses numerical integration for computing planetary perturbations for simulating such dynamics. This operation is highly computational. It is reasonable to wonder whenever statistical simulation of the perturbations can be much more easy to handle. The first step for answering such a question is to provide a statistical study of these perturbations in order to catch their main features. The statistical tools used are order statistics and heavy tail distributions. The study carried out indicated a general pattern exhibited by the perturbations around the orbits of the important planet. These characteristics were validated through statistical testing and a theoretical study based on Opik theory.

Linearly and Circularly Polarized Emission in Sagittarius A*

We perform general relativistic ray-tracing calculations of the transfer of polarized synchrotron radiation through the relativistic accretion flow in Sagittarius (Sgr) A*. Based on a two-temperature magneto-rotational-instability (MRI) induced accretion mode, the birefringence effects are treated self-consistently. By fitting the spectrum and polarization of Sgr A* from millimeter to near-infrared bands, we are able to not only constrain the basic parameters related to the MRI and the electron heating rate, but also limit the orientation of the accretion torus. These constraints lead to unique polarimetric images, which may be compared with future millimeter and sub-millimeter VLBI observations. In combination with general relativistic MHD simulations, the model has the potential to test the MRI with observations of Sgr A*.

Micromegas TPC studies at high magnetic fields using the charge dispersion signal

The International Linear Collider (ILC) Time Projection Chamber (TPC) transverse space-point resolution goal is 100 microns for all tracks including stiff 90 degree tracks with the full 2 meter drift. A Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) readout TPC can achieve the target resolution with existing techniques using 1 mm or narrower pads at the expense of increased detector cost and complexity. The new MPGD readout technique of charge dispersion can achieve good resolution without resorting to narrow pads. This has been demonstrated previously for 2 mm x 6 mm pads with GEMs and Micromegas in cosmic ray tests and in a KEK beam test in a 1 Tesla magnet. We have recently tested a Micromegas-TPC using the charge dispersion readout concept in a high field super-conducting magnet at DESY. The measured Micromegas gain was found to be constant within 0.5% for magnetic fields up to 5 Tesla. With the strong suppression of transverse diffusion at high magnetic fields, we measure a flat 50 micron resolution at 5 Tesla over the full 15 cm drift length of our prototype TPC.

Spin projection in the shell model Monte Carlo method and the spin distribution of nuclear level densities

We introduce spin projection methods in the shell model Monte Carlo approach and apply them to calculate the spin distribution of level densities for iron-region nuclei using the complete $(pf+g_{9/2})$-shell. We compare the calculated distributions with the spin-cutoff model and extract an energy-dependent moment of inertia. For even-even nuclei and at low excitation energies, we observe a significant suppression of the moment of inertia and odd-even staggering in the spin dependence of level densities.

The nuclear moment of inertia and spin distribution of nuclear levels

We introduce a simple model to calculate the nuclear moment of inertia at finite temperature. This moment of inertia describes the spin distribution of nuclear levels in the framework of the spin-cutoff model. Our model is based on a deformed single-particle Hamiltonian with pairing interaction and takes into account fluctuations in the pairing gap. We derive a formula for the moment of inertia at finite temperature that generalizes the Belyaev formula for zero temperature. We show that a number-parity projection explains the strong odd-even effects observed in shell model Monte Carlo studies of the nuclear moment of inertia in the iron region.

Breakdown of the coexistence of spin-singlet superconductivity and itinerant ferromagnetism

We discuss the possibility of coexistence of spin-singlet superconductivity and ferromagnetism in a model where the same electrons are assumed responsible for both of them. Our calculations include both zero and finite momentum pairing states with both s-wave and d-wave pairing symmetry. Under the mean-field approximation, the thermodynamic potential of the non-magnetic superconducting (SC) state is shown to be always lower than that of the superconducting ferromagnetic (SF) state. It follows that the spin-singlet SF state is energetically unfavorable, and a spin-triplet SF state is more likely to survive in metals such as UGe$_{2}$ and ZrZn$_{2}$.

Signature of a Pairing Transition in the Heat Capacity of Finite Nuclei

The heat capacity of iron isotopes is calculated within the interacting shell model using the complete $(pf+0g_{9/2})$-shell. We identify a signature of the pairing transition in the heat capacity that is correlated with the suppression of the number of spin-zero neutron pairs as the temperature increases. Our results are obtained by a novel method that significantly reduces the statistical errors in the heat capacity calculated by the shell model Monte Carlo approach. The Monte Carlo results are compared with finite-temperature Fermi gas and BCS calculations.

Level Densities by Particle-Number Reprojection Monte Carlo Methods

A particle-number reprojection method is applied in the framework of the shell model Monte Carlo approach to calculate level densities for a family of nuclei using Monte Carlo sampling for a single nucleus. In particular we can also calculate level densities of odd-even and odd-odd nuclei despite a new sign problem introduced by the projection on an odd number of particles. The method is applied to level densities in the iron region using the complete $pf+g_{9/2}$-shell. The single-particle level density parameter $a$ and the backshift parameter $Δ$ are extracted by fitting the microscopically calculated level densities to the backshifted Bethe formula. We find good agreement with experimental level densities with no adjustable parameters in the microscopic calculations. The parameter $a$ is found to vary smoothly with mass and does not show odd-even effects. The calculated backshift parameter $Δ$ displays an odd-even staggering effect versus mass and is in better agreement with the experimental data than are the empirical values.

Parity Dependence of Nuclear Level Densities

A simple formula for the ratio of the number of odd- and even-parity states as a function of temperature is derived. This formula is used to calculate the ratio of level densities of opposite parities as a function of excitation energy. We test the formula with quantum Monte Carlo shell model calculations in the $(pf+g_{9/2})$-shell. The formula describes well the transition from low excitation energies where a single parity dominates to high excitations where the two densities are equal.

Particle-Number Reprojection in the Shell Model Monte Carlo Method: Application to Nuclear Level Densities

We introduce a particle-number reprojection method in the shell model Monte Carlo that enables the calculation of observables for a series of nuclei using a Monte Carlo sampling for a single nucleus. The method is used to calculate nuclear level densities in the complete $(pf+g_{9/2})$-shell using a good-sign Hamiltonian. Level densities of odd-A and odd-odd nuclei are reliably extracted despite an additional sign problem. Both the mass and the $T_z$ dependence of the experimental level densities are well described without any adjustable parameters. The single-particle level density parameter is found to vary smoothly with mass. The odd-even staggering observed in the calculated backshift parameter follows the experimental data more closely than do empirical formulae.
