Flexible Parametrization of Generalized Parton Distributions: The Chiral-Odd Sector

We present a physically motivated parameterization of the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions. The parametrization is an extension of our previous one in the chiral-even sector which was based on the reggeized diquark model. While for chiral even generalized distributions a quantitative fit with uncertainty estimation can be performed using deep inelastic scattering data, nucleon electromagnetic, axial and pseudoscalar form factors measurements, and all available deeply virtual Compton scattering data, the chiral-odd sector is far less constrained. While awaiting the analysis of measurements on pseudoscalar mesons exclusive electroproduction which are key for the extraction of chiral odd GPDs, we worked out a connection between the chiral-even and chiral-odd reduced helicity amplitudes using Parity transformations. The connection works for a class of models including two-components models. This relation allows us to estimate the size of the various chiral odd contributions and it opens the way for future quantitative fits.

Extraction of $α_s$ from deep inelastic scattering at large $x$

We present an analysis of the role of the running coupling constant at the intersection of perturbative and nonperturbative QCD. Although the approaches that have been considered so far in these two regimes appear to be complementary to each other, a unified description might derive through the definition of the effective coupling, as they both provide ways of analyzing its freezing at low values of the scale. We extract the effective coupling from all available experimental data on the unpolarized structure function of the proton, $F_2^p$, at large values of Bjorken $x$, including the resonance region. We suggest that parton-hadron duality observed in this region can be explained if nonperturbative effects are included in the coupling constant. The outcome of our analysis is a smooth transition from perturbative to nonperturbative QCD physics, embodied in the running of the coupling constant at intermediate scales.

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

Self-Organizing Maps and Parton Distributions Functions

We present a new method to extract parton distribution functions from high energy experimental data based on a specific type of neural networks, the Self-Organizing Maps. We illustrate the features of our new procedure that are particularly useful for an anaysis directed at extracting generalized parton distributions from data. We show quantitative results of our initial analysis of the parton distribution functions from inclusive deep inelastic scattering.

New approach to the Parton Distribution Functions: Self-Organizing Maps

We propose a Parton Distribution Function (PDF) fitting technique which is based on an interactive neural network algorithm using Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs). SOMs are visualization algorithms based on competitive learning among spatially-ordered neurons. Our SOMs are trained with stochastically generated PDF samples. On every optimization iteration the PDFs are clustered on the SOM according to a user-defined feature and the most promising candidates are selected as a seed for the subsequent iteration. Our main goal is thus to provide a fitting procedure that, at variance with the global analyses and standard neural network approaches, allows for an increased control of the systematic bias by enabling user interaction in the various stages of the fitting process.

New avenue to the Parton Distribution Functions: Self-Organizing Maps

Neural network algorithms have been recently applied to construct Parton Distribution Function (PDF) parametrizations which provide an alternative to standard global fitting procedures. We propose a technique based on an interactive neural network algorithm using Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs). SOMs are a class of clustering algorithms based on competitive learning among spatially-ordered neurons. Our SOMs are trained on selections of stochastically generated PDF samples. The selection criterion for every optimization iteration is based on the features of the clustered PDFs. Our main goal is to provide a fitting procedure that, at variance with the standard neural network approaches, allows for an increased control of the systematic bias by enabling user interaction in the various stages of the process.

Generalized Parton Distributions and Hadronic Observables

Following a previous detailed study of unpolarized generalized parton distribution functions in the non-singlet sector, and at zero values of the skewness variable, $ζ$, we propose a physically motivated parametrization that is valid at $ζ\neq 0$. Our method makes use of information from the nucleon form factor data, from deep inelastuc scattering parton distribution functions, and from lattice results on the Mellin moments of generalized parton distributions. It provides, therefore, a step towards a model independent extraction of generalized distributions from the data, alternative to the mathematical ansatz of double distributions. Comparisons with recent experimental data on the proton are shown.

Generalized Parton Distributions from Hadronic Observables

We propose a physically motivated parametrization for the unpolarized generalized parton distributions, H and E, valid at both zero and non-zero values of the skewness variable, ζ. At ζ=0, H and E are determined using constraints from simultaneous fits of experimental data on both the nucleon elastic form factors and the deep inelastic structure functions. Lattice calculations of the higher moments constrain the parametrization at ζ> 0. Our method provides a step towards a model independent extraction of generalized distributions from the data that is alternative to the mathematical ansatz of double distributions.

Obtaining Parton Distribution Functions from Self-Organizing Maps

We present an alternative algorithm to global fitting procedures to construct Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) parametrizations. The proposed algorithm uses Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs) which at variance with the standard Neural Networks, are based on competitive-learning. SOMs generate a non-uniform projection from a high dimensional data s pace onto a low dimensional one (usually 1 or 2 dimensions) by clustering similar PDF representations together. The SOMs are trained on progressively narrower selections of data samples. The selection criterion is that of convergence towards a neighborhood of the experimental data. All available data sets on deep inelastic scattering in the kinematical region of 0.001 < x < 0.75, and 1 10 GeV^2 were implemented. The proposed fitting procedure, at variance with standard neural network approaches, allows for an increased control of the systematic bias by enabling the user to directly control the data selection procedure at various stages of the process.

The Transition between Perturbative and Non-Perturbative QCD

We study both polarized and unpolarized proton structure functions in the kinematical region of large Bjorken x and four-momentum transfer of few GeV^2. In this region the phenomenon of parton-hadron duality takes place between the smooth continuation of the deep inelastic scattering curve and the average of the nucleon resonances. We present results on a perturbative-QCD analysis using all recent accurate data with the aim of extracting the infrared behavior of the nucleon structure functions.

Microscopic Description of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering off Spin-0 Nuclei

We evaluate within a microscopic calculation the contributions of both coherent and incoherent deeply virtual Compton scattering from a spin-0 nucleus. The coherent contribution is obtained when the target nucleus recoils as a whole, whereas for incoherent scattering break-up configurations for the final nucleus into a an outgoing nucleon and an $A-1$ system are considered. The two processes encode different characteristics of generalized parton distributions.

Nuclear Medium Modifications of Hadrons from Generalized Parton Distributions

We study the structure of generalized parton distributions in spin 0 nuclei within a microscopic approach for nuclear dynamics. GPDs can be used on one side as tools to unravel the deep inelastic transverse structure of nuclei in terms of both transverse spatial and transverse momentum degrees of freedom. On the other, one can obtain information on GPDs themselves by observing how they become modified in the nuclear environment. We derive the structure of the nuclear deeply virtual Compton scattering tensor and generalized parton distributions at leading order in $Q$ in a field-theoretical framework. The nuclear generalized parton distributions are calculated using a two step process -- the convolution approach -- where the scattering process happens from a quark inside a nucleon, itself inside a nucleus, disregarding final state interactions with both the nuclear and nucleon debris. We point out that details of the nuclear long range interactions such as two-body currents, can be disregarded compared to the deep inelastic induced modifications of the bound GPDs. We show how the pattern of nuclear modifications predicted, and in particular the deviations of off-shell effects from the longitudinal convolution provide clear signals to be sought in experimental measurements. Finally, we find interesting relationships by studying Mellin moments in nuclei: in particular we predict the $A$-dependence for the $D$-term of GPDs within a microscopic approach, and the behavior with $t$ of the total momentum carried by quarks in a nucleus. The latter provides an important element for the evaluation of nuclear hadronization phenomena which are vital for interpreting current and future data at RHIC, HERMES and Jefferson Lab.

Generalized Parton Distributions and Transversity in Nucleons and Nuclei

We present an exploratory study using generalized parton distributions of several observables related to transverse degrees of freedom in hadronic structure -- the nucleon transverse momentum, the transverse radius, or impact parameter, and the momentum transfer, $t$, dependence of the longitudinal variable $x$ -- in both nucleons and nuclei.

Quark-hadron duality and higher twist contributions in structure functions

Quark-hadron duality is studied in a systematic way for polarized and unpolarized structure functions, by taking into account all the available data in the resonance region. In both cases, a precise perturbative QCD based analysis of the integrals of the structure functions in the resonance region has been performed: non perturbative contributions have been disentangled, higher twist contributions have been evaluated and compared with the ones extracted in the deep inelastic scattering region. A different behavior for the unpolarized and polarized structure functions at low Q^2 is found.

Generalized Parton Distributions: A New Avenue to Color Transparency Phenomena

Color Transparency studies have been since long suggested as a means to study the occurrence and relevance of small size hadronic configurations, predicted within QCD to dominate exclusive scattering processes, by monitoring the passage of hadrons through the nuclear medium at large four momentum transfer, $Q^2$. The validation through experiments of this picture -- the dominance of short separation components -- is however not straightforward. This situation motivated us to explore a description of Color Transparency in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) using a recent interpretation in impact parameter representation.

A Perturbative QCD Based Study of Polarized Nucleon Structure in the Transition Region and Beyond: "Quarks, Color Neutral Clusters, and Hadrons"

A large fraction of the world data on both polarized and unpolarized inclusive $ep$ scattering at large Bjorken $x$ lies in the resonance region where a correspondence with the deep inelastic regime, known as Bloom and Gilman's duality, was observed. Recent analyses of the $Q^2$ dependence of the data show that parton-hadron duality is inconsistent with the twist expansion at low values of the final state invariant mass. We investigate the nature of this disagreement, and we interpret its occurrence in terms of contributions from non partonic degrees of freedom in a preconfinement model.
