Beyond Gaia DR3: Tracing the [$α$/M]-[M/H] bimodality from the inner to the outer Milky Way disc with Gaia-RVS and convolutional neural networks

In June 2022, Gaia DR3 has provided the astronomy community with about one million spectra from the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) covering the CaII triplet region. However, one-third of the published spectra have 15<S/N<25 per pixel such that they pose problems for classical spectral analysis pipelines, and therefore, alternative ways to tap into these large datasets need to be devised. We aim to leverage the versatility and capabilities of machine learning techniques for supercharged stellar parametrisation by combining Gaia-RVS spectra with the full set of Gaia products and high-resolution, high-quality ground-based spectroscopic reference datasets. We developed a hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN) that combines the Gaia DR3 RVS spectra, photometry (G, G_BP, G_RP), parallaxes, and XP coefficients to derive atmospheric parameters (Teff, log(g) as well as overall [M/H]) and chemical abundances ([Fe/H] and [α/M]). We trained the CNN with a high-quality training sample based on APOGEE DR17 labels. With this CNN, we derived homogeneous atmospheric parameters and abundances for 886080 RVS stars that show remarkable precision and accuracy compared to external datasets (such as GALAH and asteroseismology). The CNN is robust against noise in the RVS data, and we derive very precise labels down to S/N=15. We managed to characterise the [α/M]-[M/H] bimodality from the inner regions to the outer parts of the Milky Way, which has never been done using RVS spectra or similar datasets. This work is the first to combine machine learning with such diverse datasets and paves the way for large-scale machine learning analysis of Gaia-RVS spectra from future data releases. Large, high-quality datasets can be optimally combined thanks to the CNN, thereby realising the full power of spectroscopy, astrometry, and photometry.

Chemical abundances of the young inner-disk open cluster NGC 6705 observed by APOGEE: sodium-rich and not $α$-enhanced

Previous results in the literature have found the young inner-disk open cluster NGC 6705 to be mildly $α$-enhanced. We examined this possibility via an independent chemical abundance analysis for 11 red-giant members of NGC 6705. The analysis is based on near-infrared APOGEE spectra and relies on LTE calculations using spherical model atmospheres and radiative transfer. We find a mean cluster metallicity of $\rm [Fe/H] = +0.13 \pm 0.04$, indicating that NGC 6705 is metal-rich, as may be expected for a young inner-disk cluster. The mean $α$-element abundance relative to iron is $\rm \langle [α/Fe]\rangle =-0.03 \pm 0.05$, which is not at odds with expectations from general Galactic abundance trends. NGC 6705 also provides important probes for studying stellar mixing, given its turn-off mass of M$\sim$3.3 M$_\odot$. Its red giants have low $^{12}$C abundances ([$^{12}$C/Fe]=$-$0.16) and enhanced $^{14}$N abundances ([$^{14}$N/Fe]=+0.51), which are key signatures of the first dredge-up on the red giant branch. An additional signature of dredge-up was found in the Na abundances, which are enhanced by [Na/Fe]=+0.29, with a very small non-LTE correction. The $^{16}$O and Al abundances are found to be near-solar. All of the derived mixing-sensitive abundances are in agreement with stellar models of approximately 3.3 M$_{\odot}$ evolving along the red giant branch and onto the red clump. As found in young open clusters with similar metallicities, NGC 6705 exhibits a mild excess in the s-process element cerium, with $\rm [Ce/Fe] = +0.13\pm0.07$.

A view of the H-band light-element chemical patterns in Globular Clusters under the AGB self-enrichment scenario

We discuss the self-enrichment scenario by AGB stars for the formation of multiple populations in globular clusters (GCs) by analyzing data set of giant stars observed in 9 Galactic GCs, covering a wide range of metallicities and for which the simultaneous measurements of C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si are available. To this aim we calculated 6 sets of AGB models, with the same chemical composition as the stars belonging to the first generation of each GC. We find that the AGB yields can reproduce the set of observations available, not only in terms of the degree of contamination shown by stars in each GC but, more important, also the observed trend with metallicity, which agrees well with the predictions from AGB evolution modelling. While further observational evidences are required to definitively fix the main actors in the pollution of the interstellar medium from which new generation of stars formed in GCs, the present results confirm that the gas ejected by stars of mass in the range $4~\rm M_{\odot} \leq \rm M \leq 8~\rm M_{\odot}$ during the AGB phase share the same chemical patterns traced by stars in GCs.

Nanoscale characterization of thin immersion silver coatings on copper substrates

Microelectronic-grade copper foils were immersion silver plated in a home-made non-cyanide alkaline silver nitrate - thiosulfate solution and in two commercially available industrial baths via contact reductive precipitation. The concentration depth profiles of the freshly deposited silver layers were afterwards analyzed at nanoscale resolution by means of Secondary Neutral Mass Spectrometry (SNMS) and Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GDOES). The thickness of deposited silver layers obtained with 30-60 s immersion time were in the range of 50-150 nm, depending on the parameters of the immersion procedure. Slight contamination of sulfur from the thiosulfate bath was detectable. Traces of Cr and Na could be observed as well around the interface between the copper substrate and silver deposit. Results also indicate that storage for longer time in air especially at higher than ambient temperatures induces a kind of ageing effect in the deposited layer, changing its composition. In case of samples prepared from home-made solution increasing amounts of copper together with its corrosion products became detectable.
