Superconductive Ultra-compact Magnetically Coupled Resonator with Twin-spiral Structure

We describe a practical design of an ultra-compact on-chip superconductive micro-resonator as a potential magnetic element of metamaterial. The achieved resonator size with respect to the wavelength in our experiment is about λ/ 14400. The resonator consists of two superconducting Nb spirals, sandwiched face to face, with a small gap filled with dielectric. The spirals are turning in opposite directions: one clockwise, another counter-clockwise. We study the resonator spectral response and its inner modes using numerical simulation in HFSS. In experiment with a Laser Scanning Microscope (LSM) we confirm the predictions for the resonance frequencies of Nb superconductive resonator and its inner modes structures. Small size and the ease of manufacturing make the two-spiral resonator an attractive solution for superconductive filters, coupling circuits, and as a magnetic component of a metamaterial.

Microwave Nonlinearity and Photoresponse of Superconducting Resonators with Columnar Defect Micro-Channels

Micro-channels of nanosized columnar tracks were planted by heavy-ion irradiation into superconducting microwave microstrip resonators that were patterned from YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films on LaAlO3 substrates. Three different ion fluences were used, producing different column densities, with each fluence having a successively greater impact on the nonlinearity of the device, as compared to a control sample. Photoresponse images made with a 638 nm rastered laser beam revealed that the channel is a location of enhanced photoresponse and a hot spot for the generation of intermodulation distortion. The microwave photoresponse technique was also advanced in this work by investigating the role of coupling strength on the distribution of photoresponse between inductive and resistive components.

Superconducting RF Metamaterials Made with Magnetically Active Planar Spirals

Superconducting metamaterials combine the advantages of low-loss, large inductance (with the addition of kinetic inductance), and extreme tunability compared to their normal metal counterparts. Therefore, they allow realization of compact designs operating at low frequencies. We have recently developed radio frequency (RF) metamaterials with a high loaded quality factor and an electrical size as small as $\sim$$λ$658, ($λ$ is the free space wavelength) by using Nb thin films. The RF metamaterial is composed of truly planar spirals patterned with lithographic techniques. Linear transmission characteristics of these metamaterials show robust Lorentzian resonant peaks in the sub- 100 MHz frequency range below the $T_c$ of Nb. Though Nb is a non-magnetic material, the circulating currents in the spirals generated by RF signals produce a strong magnetic response, which can be tuned sensitively either by temperature or magnetic field thanks to the superconducting nature of the design. We have also observed strong nonlinearity and meta-stable jumps in the transmission data with increasing RF input power until the Nb is driven into the normal state. We discuss the factors modifying the induced magnetic response from single and 1-D arrays of spirals in the light of numerical simulations.
