Chemical bonding in americium oxides: x-ray spectroscopic view

The electronic structure and the chemical state in Am binary oxides and Am-doped UO$_2$ were studied by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy at shallow Am core ($4d$ and $5d$) edges. In particular, the Am $5f$ states were probed and the nature of their bonding to the oxygen states was analyzed. The interpretation of the experimental data was supported by the Anderson impurity model (AIM) calculations which took into account the full multiplet structure due to the interaction between $5f$ electrons as well as the interaction with the core hole. The sensitivity of the branching ratio of the Am $4d_{3/2}$ and $4d_{5/2}$ x-ray absorption lines to the chemical state of Am was shown using Am binary oxides as reference systems. The observed ratio for Am-doped UO$_2$ suggests that at least at low Am concentrations, americium is in the Am(III) state in the UO$_2$ lattice. To confirm the validity of the applied AIM approach, the analysis of the Am $4f$ x-ray photoelectron spectra of AmO$_2$ and Am$_2$O$_3$ was also performed which revealed a good agreement between experiment and calculations. As a whole, AmO$_2$ can be classified as the charge-transfer compound with the $5f$ occupancy ($n_f$) equal to 5.73 electrons, while Am$_2$O$_3$ is rather a Mott-Hubbard system with $n_f$=6.05.

Effect of carbon content on electronic structure of uranium carbides

The electronic structure of UC$_x$ (x=0.9, 1.0, 1.1, 2.0) was studied by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the C $K$ edge and measurements in the high energy resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) mode at the U $M_4$ and $L_3$ edges. The full-relativistic density functional theory calculations taking into account the $5f-5f$ Coulomb interaction $U$ and spin-orbit coupling (DFT+$U$+SOC) were also performed for UC and UC$_2$. While the U $L_3$ HERFD-XAS spectra of the studied samples reveal little difference, the U $M_4$ HERFD-XAS spectra show certain sensitivity to the varying carbon content in uranium carbides. The observed gradual changes in the U $M_4$ HERFD spectra suggest an increase in the C $2p$-U $5f$ charge transfer, which is supported by the orbital population analysis in the DFT+$U$+SOC calculations, indicating an increase in the U $5f$ occupancy in UC$_2$ as compared to that in UC. On the other hand, the density of states at the Fermi level were found to be significantly lower in UC$_2$, thus affecting the thermodynamic properties. Both the x-ray spectroscopic data (in particular, the C $K$ XAS measurements) and results of the DFT+$U$+SOC indicate the importance of taking into account $U$ and SOC for the description of the electronic structure of actinide carbides.

The chemical state of complex uranium oxides

We report here the first direct observation of U(V) in uranium binary oxides and analyze the gradual conversion of the U oxidation state in the mixed uranium systems. Our finding clarifies previous contradicting results and provides important input for the geological disposal of spent fuel, recycling applications and chemistry of uranium species.

Structural properties of amorphous metal carbides; theory and experiment

By means of theoretical modeling and experimental synthesis and characterization, we investigate the structural properties of amorphous Zr-Si-C. Two chemical compositions are selected, Zr0.31Si0.29C0.40 and Zr0.60Si0.33C0.07. The amorphous structures are generated in the theoretical part of our work, by the stochastic quenching (SQ) method, and detailed comparison is made as regards structure and density of the experimentally synthesized films. These films are analyzed experimentally using X-ray absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Our results demonstrate for the first time a remarkable agreement between theory and experiment concerning bond distances and atomic coordination of this complex amorphous metal carbide. The demonstrated power of the SQ method opens up avenues for theoretical predictions of amorphous materials in general.

The electronic structure of polyaniline and doped phases studied by soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies

The electronic structure of the conjugated polymer, polyaniline, has been studied by resonant and nonresonant X-ray emission spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation for the excitation. The measurements were made on polyaniline and a few doped (protonated) phases for both the carbon and nitrogen contents. The resonant X-ray emission spectra show depletion of the π electron bands due to the selective excitation which enhances the effect of symmetry selection rules. The valence band structures in the X-ray emission spectra attributed to the π bands show unambiguous changes of the electronic structure upon protonation. By comparing to X-ray absorption measurements, the chemical bonding and electronic configuration is characterized.

Resonant soft X-ray Raman scattering of NiO

Resonant soft X-ray Raman scattering measurements on NiO have been made at photon energies across the Ni 2p absorption edges. The details of the spectral features are identified as Raman scattering due to d-d and charge-transfer excitations. The spectra are interpreted within the single impurity Anderson model, including multiplets, crystal-field and charge-transfer effects. At threshold excitation, the spectral features consists of triplet-triplet and triplet-singlet transitions of the 3d8 configuration. For excitation energies corresponding to the charge-transfer region in the Ni 2p X-ray absorption spectrum of NiO, the emission spectra are instead dominated by charge-transfer transitions to the 3d9L-1 final state. Comparisons of the final states with other spectroscopical techniques are also made.

Electronic structure investigation of CeB6 by means of soft X-ray scattering

The electronic structure of the heavy fermion compound CeB6 is probed by resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering using photon energies across the Ce 3d and 4d absorption edges. The hybridization between the localized 4f orbitals and the delocalized valence-band states is studied by identifying the different spectral contributions from inelastic Raman scattering and normal fluorescence. Pronounced energy-loss structures are observed below the elastic peak at both the 3d and 4d thresholds. The origin and character of the inelastic scattering structures are discussed in terms of charge-transfer excitations in connection to the dipole allowed transitions with 4f character. Calculations within the single impurity Anderson model with full multiplet effects are found to yield consistent spectral functions to the experimental data.

Electronic structure investigation of CoO by means of soft X-ray scattering

The electronic structure of CoO is studied by resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering spectroscopy using photon energies across the Co 2p absorption edges. The different spectral contributions from the energy-loss structures are identified as Raman scattering due to d-d and charge-transfer excitations. For excitation energies close to the L3 resonance, the spectral features are dominated by quartet-quartet and quartet-doublet transitions of the 3d7 configuration. At excitation energies corresponding to the satellites in the Co 2p X-ray absorption spectrum of CoO, the emission features are instead dominated by charge-transfer transitions to the 3d8L-1 final state. The spectra are interpreted and discussed with the support of simulations within the single impurity Anderson model with full multiplet effects which are found to yield consistent spectral functions to the experimental data.

Large magnetic circular dichroism in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Mn L-edge of Mn-Zn ferrite

We report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) excited by circularly polarized x-rays on Mn-Zn ferrite at the Mn L2,3-resonances. We demonstrate that crystal field excitations, as expected for localized systems, dominate the RIXS spectra and thus their dichroic asymmetry cannot be interpreted in terms of spin-resolved partial density of states, which has been the standard approach for RIXS dichroism. We observe large dichroic RIXS at the L2-resonance which we attribute to the absence of metallic core hole screening in the insulating Mn-ferrite. On the other hand, reduced L3-RIXS dichroism is interpreted as an effect of longer scattering time that enables spin-lattice core hole relaxation via magnons and phonons occurring on a femtosecond time scale.

Uranium oxides investigated by X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies

X-ray absorption and resonant X-ray emission measurements at the O 1s edge of the uranium oxides UO2, U3O8 and UO3 are presented. The spectral shapes of the O Kα X-ray emission spectra of UO3 exhibit significant excitation energy dependence, from an asymmetric to a symmetric form, which differs from those of UO2 and U3O8. This energy dependence is attributed to a significant difference in the oxygen-uranium hybridization between two different sites in the crystal structure of UO3. The spectral shapes of UO2 and U3O8 are also found to be different but without significant energy dependence. The experimental spectra of the valence and conduction bands of the uranium oxides are compared to the results of electronic structure calculations available in the literature.

Spin transition in LaCoO3 investigated by resonant soft X-ray emission spectroscopy

The spin transition in LaCoO3 is investigated by temperature-dependent resonant soft X-ray emission spectroscopy near the Co 2p absorption edges. This element-specific technique is more bulk sensitive with respect to the temperature induced spin-state of the Co3+ ions in LaCoO3 than other high-energy spectroscopic methods. The spin transition is interpreted and discussed with ab-initio density-functional theory within the fixed-spin moment method, which is found to yield consistent spectral functions to the experimental data. The spectral changes for LaCoO3 as a function of temperature suggest a change in spin-state as the temperature is raised from 85 to 300 K while the system remains in the same spin state as the temperature is further increased to 510 K.

Magnetic circular dichroism in X-ray fluorescence of Heusler alloys at threshold excitation

The results of fluorescence measurements of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in Mn L_2,L_3 X-ray emission and absorption for Heusler alloys NiMnSb and Co2MnSb are presented. Very intense resonance Mn L_3 emission is found at the Mn 2p_3/2 threshold and is attributed to a peculiarity of the threshold excitation in materials with the half-metallic character of the electronic structure. A theoretical model for the description of resonance scattering of polarized x-rays is suggested.
