Homological index for 1-forms and a Milnor number for isolated singularities

We introduce a notion of a homological index of a holomorphic 1-form on a germ of a complex analytic variety with an isolated singularity, inspired by X. Gómez-Mont and G.-M. Greuel. For isolated complete intersection singularities it coincides with the index defined earlier by two of the authors. Subtracting from this index another one, called radial, we get an invariant of the singularity which does not depend on the 1-form. For isolated complete intersection singularities this invariant coincides with the Milnor number. We compute this invariant for arbitrary curve singularities and compare it with the Milnor number introduced by R.-O. Buchweitz and G.-M. Greuel for such singularities.

An exponential function on the set of varieties

Let $\cal R$ be either the Grothendieck semiring (semiring with multiplication) of complex algebraic varieties, or the Grothendieck ring of these varieties, or the Grothendieck ring localized by the class of the complex affine line. We introduce a construction which defines operations of taking powers of series over these (semi)rings. This means that, for a power series $A(t)=1+\sum\limits_{i=1}^\infty A_i t^i$ with the coefficients $A_i$ from $\cal R$ and for $M\in {\cal R}$, there is defined a series $(A(t))^M$ (with coefficients from $\cal R$ as well) so that all the usual properties of the exponential function hold.We also express in these terms the generating function of the Hilbert scheme of points (0-dimensional subschemes) on a surface.

The Alexander polynomial of a plane curve singularity via the ring of functions on it

We prove two formulae which express the Alexander polynomial $Δ^C$ of several variables of a plane curve singularity $C$ in terms of the ring ${\cal O}_{C}$ of germs of analytic functions on the curve. One of them expresses $Δ^C$ in terms of dimensions of some factors corresponding to a (multi-indexed) filtration on the ring ${\cal O}_{C}$. The other one gives the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial $Δ^C$ as Euler characteristics of some explicitly described spaces (complements to arrangements of projective hyperplanes). The final version of this article will be published in the Duke Mathematical Journal.

Integrals with respect to the Euler characteristic over spaces of functions and the Alexander polynomial

We discuss some formulae which express the Alexander polynomial (and thus the zeta-function of the classical monodromy transformation) of a plane curve singularity in terms of the ring of functions on the curve. One of them describes the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial or of zeta-function of the monodromy transformation as Euler characteristics of some explicitly constructed spaces. For the Alexander polynomial these spaces are complements to arrangements of projective hyperplanes in projective spaces. For the zeta-function they are disjoint unions of such spaces. Under the influence of a result by J.Denef and F.Loeser it was understood that this results are connected with the notion of the motivic integration or rather with its version (in some sense a dual one) where the space of arcs is substituted by the space of functions. The aim of this paper is to discuss the notion of the integral with respect to the Euler characteristics (or with respect to the generalized Euler characteristic) over the space of functions (or over its projectivization) and its connection with the formulae for the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial and of the zeta-function of the monodromy transformation as Euler characteristics of some spaces. The paper will be published in Proceedings of the Steklov Mathematical Institute.

Integration with respect to Euler characteristic over the projectivization of the space of functions and the Alexander polynomial of a plane curve singularity

We discuss a notion of integration with respect to the Euler characteristic in the projectivization $¶{\cal O}_{\C^n,0}$ of the ring ${\cal O}_{\C^n,0}$ of germs of functions on $C^n$ and show that the Alexander polynomial and the zeta-function of a plane curve singularity can be expressed as certain integrals over $¶{\cal O}_{\C^2,0}$ with respect to the Euler characteristic.

On the topology of germs of meromorphic functions and applications

In a previous paper the authors elaborated notions and technique which could be applied to compute such invariants of polynomials as Euler characteristics of fibres and zeta-functions of monodromy transformations associated with a polynomial. Some crucial basic properties of the notions related to the topology of meromorphic germs were not discussed there. This has produced some lack of understanding of the general constructions. The aim of this note is to partially fill in this gap. At the same time we describe connections with some previous results and generalizations of them.

On atypical values and local monodromies of meromorphic functions

A meromorphic function on a compact complex analytic manifold defines a $\bc\infty$ locally trivial fibration over the complement of a finite set in the projective line $\bc\bp^1$. We describe zeta-functions of local monodromies of this fibration around atypical values. Some applications to polynomial functions on $\bc^n$ are described.

On the zeta-function of a polynomial at infinity

We use the notion of Milnor fibres of the germ of a meromorphic function and the method of partial resolutions for a study of topology of a polynomial map at infinity (mainly for calculation of the zeta-function of a monodromy). It gives effective methods of computation of the zeta-function for a number of cases and a criterium for a value to be atypical at infinity.
