Covariant superspace approaches to ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity

We provide a unified description of the three covariant superspace approaches to ${\cal N}=2$ conformal supergravity in four dimensions: (i) conformal superspace; (ii) $\mathsf{U}(2)$ superspace; and (iii) $\mathsf{SU}(2)$ superspace. Each of them can be used to formulate general supergravity-matter systems, although conformal superspace has the largest structure group and is intimately related to the superconformal tensor calculus. We review the structure of covariant projective multiplets and demonstrate how they are used to describe pure and matter-coupled supergravity, including locally superconformal off-shell sigma models. Higher-derivative invariants, topological invariants and super-Weyl anomalies are also briefly discussed.

Self-dual supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models

In four-dimensional N=1 Minkowski superspace, general nonlinear sigma models with four-dimensional target spaces may be realised in term of CCL (chiral and complex linear) dynamical variables which consist of a chiral scalar, a complex linear scalar and their conjugate superfields. Here we introduce CCL sigma models that are invariant under U(1) "duality rotations" exchanging the dynamical variables and their equations of motion. The Lagrangians of such sigma models prove to obey a partial differential equation that is analogous to the self-duality equation obeyed by U(1) duality invariant models for nonlinear electrodynamics. These sigma models are self-dual under a Legendre transformation that simultaneously dualises (i) the chiral multiplet into a complex linear one; and (ii) the complex linear multiplet into a chiral one. Any CCL sigma model possesses a dual formulation given in terms of two chiral multiplets. The U(1) duality invariance of the CCL sigma model proves to be equivalent, in the dual chiral formulation, to a manifest U(1) invariance rotating the two chiral scalars. Since the target space has a holomorphic Killing vector, the sigma model possesses a third formulation realised in terms of a chiral multiplet and a tensor multiplet. The family of U(1) duality invariant CCL sigma models includes a subset of N=2 supersymmetric theories. Their target spaces are hyper Kahler manifolds with a non-zero Killing vector field. In the case that the Killing vector field is triholomorphic, the sigma model admits a dual formulation in terms of a self-interacting off-shell N=2 tensor multiplet. We also identify a subset of CCL sigma models which are in a one-to-one correspondence with the U(1) duality invariant models for nonlinear electrodynamics. The target space isometry group for these sigma models contains a subgroup U(1) x U(1).

Superspace approaches to $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity

The superspace formalism for $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity in four dimensions is a powerful geometric setting to engineer off-shell supergravity-matter theories, including higher-derivative couplings. This review provides a unified description of the three superspace approaches to $\mathcal{N}=1$ conformal supergravity: (i) conformal superspace; (ii) $\mathsf{U}(1)$ superspace; and (iii) the Grimm-Wess-Zumino formalism. The prepotential formulation for the latter is discussed. We briefly describe the known off-shell formulations for Poincaré and anti-de Sitter supergravity theories as conformal supergravity coupled to certain compensators. As simple applications of the formalism, we present the superfield equations of motion for various off-shell formulations for pure Poincaré and anti-de Sitter supergravity, and show that every solution of these equations is also a solution of the equations of motion for conformal supergravity.

AdS superprojectors

Within the framework of ${\mathcal N}=1$ anti-de Sitter (AdS) supersymmetry in four dimensions, we derive superspin projection operators (or superprojectors). For a tensor superfield $\mathfrak{V}_{α(m)\dotα (n)} := \mathfrak{V}_{(α_1...α_m) (\dot α_1...\dot α_n)}$ on AdS superspace, with $m$ and $n$ non-negative integers, the corresponding superprojector turns $\mathfrak{V}_{α(m)\dot α(n)} $ into a multiplet with the properties of a conserved conformal supercurrent. It is demonstrated that the poles of such superprojectors correspond to (partially) massless multiplets, and the associated gauge transformations are derived. We give a systematic discussion of how to realise the unitary and the partially massless representations of the ${\mathcal N}=1$ AdS${}_4$ superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp} (1|4)$ in terms of on-shell superfields. As an example, we present an off-shell model for the massive gravitino multiplet in AdS$_4$. We also prove that the gauge-invariant actions for superconformal higher-spin multiplets factorise into products of minimal second-order differential operators.

A Geometric Model of Arbitrary Spin Massive Particle

A new model of relativistic massive particle with arbitrary spin (($m,s$)-particle) is suggested. Configuration space of the model is a product of Minkowski space and two-dimensional sphere, ${\cal M}^6 = {\Bbb R}^{3,1} \times S^2$. The system describes Zitterbewegung at the classical level. Together with explicitly realized Poincaré symmetry, the action functional turns out to be invariant under two types of gauge transformations having their origin in the presence of two Abelian first-class constraints in the Hamilton formalism. These constraints correspond to strong conservation for the phase-space counterparts of the Casimir operators of the Poincaré group. Canonical quantization of the model leads to equations on the wave functions which prove to be equivalent to the relativistic wave equations for the massive spin-$s$ field.

Free massless higher-superspin superfields on the anti-de Sitter superspace

Free massless higher-superspin superfields on the N=1, D=4 anti-de Sitter superspace are introduced. The linearized gauge transformations are postulated. Two families of dually equivalent gauge-invariant action functionals are constructed for massless half-integer-superspin s+1/2 (s >= 2) and integer-superspin s (s >= 1) superfields. For s=1, one of the formulations for half-integer superspin multiplets reduces to linearized minimal N=1 supergravity with a cosmological term, while the other is the lifting to the anti-de Sitter superspace of linearized non-minimal n=-1 supergravity.

Goldstino superfields for spontaneously broken N=2 supersymmetry

We examine spontaneously broken N=2 supersymmetry in four dimensions and associate a spinor superfield with each Goldstino via a finite supersymmetry transformation with parameters that are the Grassmann coordinates of N=2 superspace. Making use of a special choice of coset parametrization allows us to develop a version of nonlinearly realized N=2 supersymmetry for which the associated Goldstino superfields are defined on harmonic superspace, thereby providing a natural mechanism for construction of a Goldstino action. The corresponding superfield Lagrangian is an O(4) multiplet. This property is used to reformulate the Goldstino action in projective superspace and in conventional N=2 superspace. We show how to generate matter couplings of the Goldstinos to supersymmetric matter using the N=2 harmonic, projective and full superspaces. As a bi-product of our consideration, we also derive an N=2 chiral Goldstino action.

On the component structure of N = 1 supersymmetric nonlinear electrodynamics

We analyze the component structure of models for 4D N = 1 supersymmetric nonlinear electrodynamics that enjoy invariance under continuous duality rotations. The N = 1 supersymmetric Born-Infeld action is a member of this family. Such dynamical systems have a more complicated structure, especially in the presence of supergravity, as compared with well-studied effective supersymmetric theories containing at most two derivatives (including nonlinear Kahler sigma-models). As a result, when deriving their canonically normalized component actions, it becomes impractical and cumbersome to follow the traditional approach of (i) reducing to components; and then (ii) applying a field-dependent Weyl and local chiral transformation. It proves to be more efficient to follow the Kugo-Uehara scheme which consists of (i) extending the superfield theory to a super-Weyl invariant system; and then (ii) applying a plain component reduction along with imposing a suitable super-Weyl gauge condition. Here we implement this scheme to derive the bosonic action of self-dual supersymmetric electrodynamics coupled to the dilaton-axion chiral multiplet and a Kahler sigma-model. In the fermionic sector, the action contains higher derivative terms. In the globally supersymmetric case, a nonlinear field redefinition is explicitly constructed which eliminates all the higher derivative terms and brings the fermionic action to a one-parameter deformation of the Akulov-Volkov action for the Goldstino. The Akulov-Volkov action emerges, in particular, in the case of the N = 1 supersymmetric Born-Infeld action.

Chiral supergravity actions and superforms

The superform construction of supergravity actions, christened the "ectoplasm method," is based on the use of a closed super d-form in the case of d space-time dimensions. In known examples, such superforms are obtained by iteratively solving nontrivial cohomological problems. The latter usually makes this scheme no less laborious than the normal coordinate method for deriving component actions for matter-coupled supergravity. In this note we present an alternative procedure to generate required superforms in four space-time dimensions, which makes use of self-dual vector multiplets. It provides the shortest derivation of chiral actions in two different theories: (i) N = 1 old minimal supergravity; and (ii) N = 2 conformal supergravity. The N = 2 superform construction is developed here for the first time. Although our consideration is restricted to the case of four dimensions, a generalization to higher dimensions is plausible.

On conformal supergravity and projective superspace

The projective superspace formulation for four-dimensional N = 2 matter-coupled supergravity presented in arXiv:0805.4683 makes use of the variant superspace realization for the N = 2 Weyl multiplet in which the structure group is SL(2,C) x SU(2) and the super-Weyl transformations are generated by a covariantly chiral parameter. An extension to Howe's realization of N = 2 conformal supergravity in which the tangent space group is SL(2,C) x U(2) and the super-Weyl transformations are generated by a real unconstrained parameter was briefly sketched. Here we give the explicit details of the extension.

4D N = 2 Supergravity and Projective Superspace

This paper presents a projective superspace formulation for 4D N = 2 matter-coupled supergravity. We first describe a variant superspace realization for the N = 2 Weyl multiplet. It differs from that proposed by Howe in 1982 by the choice of the structure group (SO(3,1) x SU(2) versus SO(3,1) x U(2)), which implies that the super-Weyl transformations are generated by a covariantly chiral parameter instead of a real unconstrained one. We introduce various off-shell supermultiplets which are curved superspace analogues of the superconformal projective multiplets in global supersymmetry and which describe matter fields coupled to supergravity. A manifestly locally supersymmetric and super-Weyl invariant action principle is given. Off-shell locally supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models are presented in this new superspace.

On the two-loop four-derivative quantum corrections in 4D N = 2 superconformal field theories

In \cN = 2, 4 superconformal field theories in four space-time dimensions, the quantum corrections with four derivatives are believed to be severely constrained by non-renormalization theorems. The strongest of these is the conjecture formulated by Dine and Seiberg in hep-th/9705057 that such terms are generated only at one loop. In this note, using the background field formulation in \cN = 1 superspace, we test the Dine-Seiberg proposal by comparing the two-loop F^4 quantum corrections in two different superconformal theories with the same gauge group SU(N): (i) \cN = 4 SYM (i.e. \cN = 2 SYM with a single adjoint hypermultiplet); (ii) \cN = 2 SYM with 2N hypermultiplets in the fundamental. According to the Dine-Seiberg conjecture, these theories should yield identical two-loop F^4 contributions from all the supergraphs involving quantum hypermultiplets, since the pure \cN = 2 SYM and ghost sectors are identical provided the same gauge conditions are chosen. We explicitly evaluate the relevant two-loop supergraphs and observe that the F^4 corrections generated have different large N behaviour in the two theories under consideration. Our results are in conflict with the Dine-Seiberg conjecture.

Low-energy dynamics in N = 2 super QED: Two-loop approximation

The two-loop (Euler-Heisenberg-type) effective action for N = 2 supersymmetric QED is computed using the N = 1 superspace formulation. The effective action is expressed as a series in supersymmetric extensions of F^{2n}, where n=2,3,..., with F the field strength. The corresponding coefficients are given by triple proper-time integrals which are evaluated exactly. As a by-product, we demonstrate the appearance of a non-vanishing F^4 quantum correction at the two-loop order. The latter result is in conflict with the conclusion of hep-th/9710142 that no such quantum corrections are generated at two loops in generic N = 2 SYM theories on the Coulomb branch. We explain a subtle loophole in the relevant consideration of hep-th/9710142 and re-derive the F^4 term from harmonic supergraphs.

Effective action of beta-deformed N=4 SYM theory and AdS/CFT

We compute the one-loop effective action in \N=1 conformal SU(N) gauge theory which is an exactly marginal deformation of the \N=4 SYM theory. We consider an abelian background of constant \N = 1 gauge field and single chiral scalar. While for finite N the effective action depends non-trivially on the deformation parameter β, this dependence disappears in the large N limit if the parameter βis real. This conclusion matches the strong-coupling prediction coming from the form of a D3-brane probe action in the dual supergravity background: for the simplest choice of the D3-brane position the probe action happens to be the same as for a D3-brane in AdS_5 x S^5 placed parallel to the boundary of AdS_5. This suggests that in the real βdeformation case there exists a large N non-renormalization theorem for the 4-derivative term in the action.

4D, N =1 Higher Spin Gauge Superfields and Quantized Twistors

For the gauge massless higher spin 4D, N = 1 off-shell supermultiplets previously developed, we provide evidence of a twistor-like oscillator realization that is intrinsically related to the superfield structure of the dynamical variables and gauge transformations. Gauge invariant field strengths and linearized Bianchi identities for these multiplets are worked out. It is further argued, inspired by earlier non- supersymmetric constructions due to Klishevich and Zinoviev, that a massive superspin-$s$ multiplet can be described as a gauge-invariant dynamical system involving massless multiplets of superspins s, s-1/2, ..., 0. A gauge-invariant formulation for the massive gravitino multiplet is discussed in some detail.

Self-dual effective action of N = 4 SYM revisited

More evidence is provided for the conjectured correspondence between the D3-brane action in AdS_5 x S^5 and the low-energy effective action for N = 4 SU(N) SYM on its Coulomb branch, where the gauge group SU(N) is spontaneously broken to SU(N-1) x U(1) and the dynamics is described by a single N = 2 vector multiplet corresponding to the U(1) factor of the unbroken group. Using an off-shell formulation for N = 4 SYM in N = 2 harmonic superspace, within the background-field quantization scheme we compute the two-loop quantum correction to a holomorphic sector of the effective action, which is a supersymmetric completion of interactions of the form Ω((F^+)^2 |Y|^{-4}) (F^+)^2(F^-)^2 |Y|^{-4}, with F^\pm the (anti) self-dual components of the U(1) gauge field strength, and Y the complex scalar belonging to the vector multiplet. In the one-loop approximation, Ωwas shown in hep-th/9911221 to be constant. It is demonstrated in the present paper that Ω\propto (F^+)^2 |Y|^{-4} at the two-loop order. The corresponding coefficient proves to agree with the F^6 coefficient in the D3-brane action, after implementing the nonlinear field redefinition which was sketched in hep-th/9810152 and which relates the N = 2 vector multiplet component fields with those living on the D3-brane. In the approximation considered, our results are consistent with the conjecture of hep-th/9810152 that the N = 4 SYM effective action is self-dual under N = 2 superfield Legendre transformation, and also with the stronger conjecture of hep-th/0001068 that it is self-dual under supersymmetric U(1) duality rotations.

Massive 4D, N = 1 Superspin 1 & 3/2 Multiplets and Dualities

Lagrangians for several new off-shell 4D, N = 1 supersymmetric descriptions of massive superspin-1 and superspin-3/2 multiplets are described. Taken together with the models previously constructed, there are now four off-shell formulations for the massive gravitino multiplet (superspin-1) and six off-shell formulations for the massive graviton multiplet (superspin-3/2). Duality transformations are derived which relate some of these dynamical systems.
