Opportunistic Relay Selection over Generalized Fading and Inverse Gamma Composite Fading Mixed Multicast Channels: A Secrecy Tradeoff

The secrecy performance of realistic wireless multicast scenarios can be significantly deteriorated by the simultaneous occurrence of multipath and shadowing. To resolve this security threat, in this work an opportunistic relaying-based dual-hop wireless multicast framework is proposed in which the source dispatches confidential information to a bunch of receivers via intermediate relays under the wiretapping attempts of multiple eavesdroppers. Two scenarios, i.e. non-line of sight (NLOS) and line of sight (LOS) communications along with the multiplicative and LOS shadowing are considered where the first scenario assumes eta-mu and eta-mu/inverse Gamma (IG) composite fading channels and the latter one follows kappa-mu and kappa-mu/IG composite fading channels as the source to relay and relay to receiver's as well as eavesdropper's links, respectively. Secrecy analysis is accomplished by deriving closed-form expressions of three familiar secrecy measures i.e. secure outage probability for multicasting, probability of non-zero secrecy multicast capacity, and ergodic secrecy multicast capacity. We further capitalize on those expressions to observe the effects of all system parameters which are again corroborated via Monte-Carlo simulations. Our observations indicate that a secrecy tradeoff between the number of relays and number of receivers, eavesdroppers, and shadowing parameters can be established to maintain the admissible security level by decreasing the detrimental influences of fading, shadowing, the number of multicast receivers and eavesdroppers.

Towards Prevention of Sportsmen Burnout: Formal Analysis of Sub-Optimal Tournament Scheduling

Scheduling a sports tournament is a complex optimization problem, which requires a large number of hard constraints to satisfy. Despite the availability of several such constraints in the literature, there remains a gap since most of the new sports events pose their own unique set of requirements, and demand novel constraints. Specifically talking of the strictly time bound events, ensuring fairness between the different teams in terms of their rest days, traveling, and the number of successive games they play, becomes a difficult task to resolve, and demands attention. In this work, we present a similar situation with a recently played sports event, where a suboptimal schedule favored some of the sides more than the others. We introduce various competitive parameters to draw a fairness comparison between the sides and propose a weighting criterion to point out the sides that enjoyed this schedule more than the others. Furthermore, we use root mean squared error between an ideal schedule and the actual ones for each side to determine unfairness in the distribution of rest days across their entire schedules. The latter is crucial, since successively playing a large number of games may lead to sportsmen burnout, which must be prevented.

Fog based Secure Framework for Personal Health Records Systems

The rapid development of personal health records (PHR) systems enables an individual to collect, create, store and share his PHR to authorized entities. Health care systems within the smart city environment require a patient to share his PRH data with a multitude of institutions' repositories located in the cloud. The cloud computing paradigm cannot meet such a massive transformative healthcare systems due to drawbacks including network latency, scalability and bandwidth. Fog computing relieves the burden of conventional cloud computing by availing intermediate fog nodes between the end users and the remote servers. Aiming at a massive demand of PHR data within a ubiquitous smart city, we propose a secure and fog assisted framework for PHR systems to address security, access control and privacy concerns. Built under a fog-based architecture, the proposed framework makes use of efficient key exchange protocol coupled with ciphertext attribute based encryption (CP-ABE) to guarantee confidentiality and fine-grained access control within the system respectively. We also make use of digital signature combined with CP-ABE to ensure the system authentication and users privacy. We provide the analysis of the proposed framework in terms of security and performance.

Blockchain-Enabled EHR Framework for Internet of Medical Things

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) offers an infrastructure made of smart medical equipment and software applications for health services. Through the internet, the IoMT is capable of providing remote medical diagnosis and timely health services. The patients can use their smart devices to create, store and share their electronic health records (EHR) with a variety of medical personnel including medical doctors and nurses. However, unless the underlying combination within IoMT is secured, malicious users can intercept, modify and even delete the sensitive EHR data of patients. Patients also lose full control of their EHR since most health services within IoMT are constructed under a centralized platform outsourced in the cloud. Therefore, it is appealing to design a decentralized, auditable and secure EHR system that guarantees absolute access control for the patients while ensuring privacy and security. Using the features of blockchain including decentralization, auditability and immutability, we propose a secure EHR framework which is mainly maintained by the medical centers. In this framework, the patients' EHR data are encrypted and stored in the servers of medical institutions while the corresponding hash values are kept on the blockchain. We make use of security primitives to offer authentication, integrity and confidentiality of EHR data while access control and immutability is guaranteed by the blockchain technology. The security analysis and performance evaluation of the proposed framework confirms its efficiency.

Objective Diagnosis for Histopathological Images Based on Machine Learning Techniques: Classical Approaches and New Trends

Histopathology refers to the examination by a pathologist of biopsy samples. Histopathology images are captured by a microscope to locate, examine, and classify many diseases, such as different cancer types. They provide a detailed view of different types of diseases and their tissue status. These images are an essential resource with which to define biological compositions or analyze cell and tissue structures. This imaging modality is very important for diagnostic applications. The analysis of histopathology images is a prolific and relevant research area supporting disease diagnosis. In this paper, the challenges of histopathology image analysis are evaluated. An extensive review of conventional and deep learning techniques which have been applied in histological image analyses is presented. This review summarizes many current datasets and highlights important challenges and constraints with recent deep learning techniques, alongside possible future research avenues. Despite the progress made in this research area so far, it is still a significant area of open research because of the variety of imaging techniques and disease-specific characteristics.

VSDM: A Virtual Service Device Management Scheme for UPnP-Based IoT Networks

The ubiquitous nature of IoT devices has brought new and exciting applications in computing and communication paradigms. Due to its ability to enable auto-configurable communication between IoT devices, pervasive applications, and remote clients, the use of the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol is widespread. However, the advertisement and discovery mechanism of UPnP incurs significant overhead on resource-constrained IoT devices. In this paper, we propose a delegation-based approach that extends the UPnP protocol by offloading the service advertisement and discovery-related overhead from resource-limited IoT devices to the resource-rich neighbours of a UPnP-enabled IoT network. Our experimental evaluations demonstrate that the proposed scheme shows significant improvement over the basic UPnP, reducing energy consumption and network overhead.

An Overview of UPnP-based IoT Security: Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Prospective Solutions

Advances in the development and increased availability of smart devices ranging from small sensors to complex cloud infrastructures as well as various networking technologies and communication protocols have supported the rapid expansion of Internet of Things deployments. The Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol has been widely accepted and used in the IoT domain to support interactions among heterogeneous IoT devices, in part due to zero configuration implementation which makes it feasible for use in large-scale networks. The popularity and ubiquity of UPnP to support IoT systems necessitate an exploration of security risks associated with the use of the protocol for IoT deployments. In this work, we analyze security vulnerabilities of UPnP-based IoT systems and identify attack opportunities by the adversaries leveraging the vulnerabilities. Finally, we propose prospective solutions to secure UPnP-based IoT systems from adversarial operations.

RDSP: Rapidly Deployable Wireless Ad Hoc System for Post-Disaster Management

In post-disaster scenarios, such as after floods, earthquakes, and in war zones, the cellular communication infrastructure may be destroyed or seriously disrupted. In such emergency scenarios, it becomes very important for first aid responders to communicate with other rescue teams in order to provide feedback to both the central office and the disaster survivors. To address this issue, rapidly deployable systems are required to re-establish connectivity and assist users and first responders in the region of incident. In this work, we describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of a rapidly deployable system for first response applications in post-disaster situations, named RDSP. The proposed system helps early rescue responders and victims by sharing their location information to remotely located servers by utilizing a novel routing scheme. This novel routing scheme consists of the Dynamic ID Assignment (DIA) algorithm and the Minimum Maximum Neighbor (MMN) algorithm. The DIA algorithm is used by relay devices to dynamically select their IDs on the basis of all the available IDs of networks. Whereas, the MMN algorithm is used by the client and relay devices to dynamically select their next neighbor relays for the transmission of messages. The RDSP contains three devices; the client device sends the victim's location information to the server, the relay device relays information between client and server device, the server device receives messages from the client device to alert the rescue team. We deployed and evaluated our system in the outdoor environment of the university campus. The experimental results show that the RDSP system reduces the message delivery delay and improves the message delivery ratio with lower communication overhead.

Hybrid Nano Communications

In this paper, we propose a hybrid nano communication (HNC) system that integrates three possible modes of nano communications: terahertz communication (TC), molecular communication (MC), and neural communication (NC). The paper provides some insights into how the required four key building blocks, namely, terahertz to molecular (T2M) relay interface, molecular to terahertz (M2T) interface, molecular to neural (M2N) relay, and neural to molecular (N2M) interface can be designed to implement the HNC system. In addition, the capacity analysis for the hybrid channel is provided. Sub-channels' capacities are also calculated. Finally, numerical results are presented to comprehend the data transmission capacity of the proposed HNC system.

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA): How It Meets 5G and Beyond

Due to massive connectivity and increasing demands of various services and data-hungry applications, a full-scale implementation of the fifth generation (5G) wireless systems requires more effective radio access techniques. In this regard, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has recently gained ever-growing attention from both academia and industry. Compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques, NOMA is superior in terms of spectral efficiency and is thus appropriate for 5G and Beyond. In this article, we provide an overview of NOMA principles and applications. Specifically, the article discusses the fundamentals of power-domain NOMA with single and multiple antennas in both uplink and downlink settings. In addition, the basic principles of code-domain NOMA are elaborated. Further, the article explains various resource allocation techniques such as user pairing and power allocation for NOMA systems; discusses the basic form of cooperative NOMA and its variants; and addresses several opportunities and challenges associated with the compatibility of NOMA with other advanced communication paradigms such as heterogeneous networks and millimeter wave communications.

Capacity and outage analysis of a dual-hop decode-and-forward relay-aided NOMA scheme

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is regarded as a candidate radio access technique for the next generation wireless networks because of its manifold spectral gains. A two-phase cooperative relaying strategy (CRS) is proposed in this paper by exploiting the concept of both downlink and uplink NOMA (termed as DU-CNOMA). In the proposed protocol, a transmitter considered as a source transmits a NOMA composite signal consisting of two symbols to the destination and relay during the first phase, following the principle of downlink NOMA. In the second phase, the relay forwards the symbol decoded by successive interference cancellation to the destination, whereas the source transmits a new symbol to the destination in parallel with the relay, following the principle of uplink NOMA. The ergodic sum capacity, outage probability, and outage sum capacity are investigated comprehensively along with analytical derivations, under both perfect and imperfect successive interference cancellation. The performance improvement of the proposed DU-CNOMA over the conventional CRS using NOMA, is proved through analysis and computer simulation. Furthermore, the correctness of the author's analysis is proved through a strong agreement between simulation and analytical results.

A Fuzzy System based Approach to Extend Network Lifetime for En-Route Filtering Schemes in WSNs

Wireless sensor networks suffer from false report injection attacks. This results in energy drain over sensor nodes on the event traversal route. Novel en-route filtering schemes counter this problem by filtering these attacks on designated verification nodes. However, these filtering schemes among other limitations inherently are network lifetime inefficient. Generally, report traversal paths and verification nodes are also fixed. In this paper, we cater these limitations in our proposed scheme. Simulation experiments results show that proposed schemes outperforms existing en-route filtering schemes in networks lifetime. We employed a Fuzzy Logic System to select forwarding nodes from candidate nodes based on current network conditions. Proposed scheme gains in network lifetime, and energy-efficiency while having comparable false report filtering efficiency.

Resource Allocation for Downlink NOMA Systems: Key Techniques and Open Issues

This article presents advances in resource allocation (RA) for downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, focusing on user pairing (UP) and power allocation (PA) algorithms. The former pairs the users to obtain the high capacity gain by exploiting the channel gain difference between the users, while the later allocates power to users in each cluster to balance system throughput and user fairness. Additionally, the article introduces the concept of cluster fairness and proposes the divideand- next largest difference-based UP algorithm to distribute the capacity gain among the NOMA clusters in a controlled manner. Furthermore, performance comparison between multiple-input multiple-output NOMA (MIMO-NOMA) and MIMO-OMA is conducted when users have pre-defined quality of service. Simulation results are presented, which validate the advantages of NOMA over OMA. Finally, the article provides avenues for further research on RA for downlink NOMA.

Secure Channel for Molecular Communications

Molecular communication in nanonetworks is an emerging communication paradigm that uses molecules as information carriers. Achieving a secure information exchange is one of the practical challenges that need to be considered to address the potential of molecular communications in nanonetworks. In this article, we have introduced secure channel into molecular communications to prevent eavesdropping. First, we propose a Diffie Hellman algorithm-based method by which communicating nanomachines can exchange a secret key through molecular signaling. Then, we use this secret key to perform ciphering. Also, we present both the algorithm for secret key exchange and the secured molecular communication system. The proposed secured system is found effective in terms of energy consumption.

Fuzzy Ontology-Based Sentiment Analysis of Transportation and City Feature Reviews for Safe Traveling

Traffic congestion is rapidly increasing in urban areas, particularly in mega cities. To date, there exist a few sensor network based systems to address this problem. However, these techniques are not suitable enough in terms of monitoring an entire transportation system and delivering emergency services when needed. These techniques require real-time data and intelligent ways to quickly determine traffic activity from useful information. In addition, these existing systems and websites on city transportation and travel rely on rating scores for different factors (e.g., safety, low crime rate, cleanliness, etc.). These rating scores are not efficient enough to deliver precise information, whereas reviews or tweets are significant, because they help travelers and transportation administrators to know about each aspect of the city. However, it is difficult for travelers to read, and for transportation systems to process, all reviews and tweets to obtain expressive sentiments regarding the needs of the city. The optimum solution for this kind of problem is analyzing the information available on social network platforms and performing sentiment analysis. On the other hand, crisp ontology-based frameworks cannot extract blurred information from tweets and reviews; therefore, they produce inadequate results. In this regard, this paper proposes fuzzy ontology-based sentiment analysis and SWRL rule-based decision-making to monitor transportation activities and to make a city- feature polarity map for travelers. This system retrieves reviews and tweets related to city features and transportation activities. The feature opinions are extracted from these retrieved data, and then fuzzy ontology is used to determine the transportation and city-feature polarity. A fuzzy ontology and an intelligent system prototype are developed by using Protégé OWL and Java, respectively.
