GraphShed: A Data-derived Graph-based waterShed Group Finder

This study introduces GraphShed, a data-derived group-finder that applies top-down watershed segmentation to Voronoi-induced graphs, identifying galaxy systems directly from the density field via a GraphShed-derived linking length, with no density thresholds or tunable parameters. A GraphShed galaxy group catalog compared to a Friends-of-Friends (FoF) catalog built from the IllustrisTNG100-1 simulation with a box size of $\sim 75$ Mpc/h yielding $1067$ and $987$ systems, respectively. The GraphShed-derived linking length adapts to the global clustering power of the sample, varying by $\sim 18 \%$ relative to FoF across different sample selections; thus, catalog differences originate in the watershed segmentation. Cross-catalog comparison shows that $\sim 58 \%$ of FoF systems are identically reproduced by GraphShed, $\sim 5 \%$ are completely removed, and the remainder are partially shaved and/or split into multiple systems. While the $M_{200}$ distributions of the two catalogs are statistically consistent, other structural properties including, $R_{200}$, sphericity, compactness, spin, and centroid shift, differ significantly in at least some richness ranges. The unweighted two-point correlation function of GraphShed systems exhibits a higher amplitude on small scales, $r \lesssim 1$ Mpc/h, and agrees with FoF for $r\gtrsim 5$ Mpc/h. A velocity-based classification reveals that GraphShed resolves more interacting pairs than FoF, demonstrating its ability to distinguish nearby overdense structures that position-only methods merge into single systems. These results demonstrate that GraphShed preserves cosmological statistics while providing a more resolved detection of galaxy systems and their dynamical interactions.

CMB Bounds on Primordial Black Holes via Radiation Capture

We explore the capture of neutrinos and photons in the cosmic neutrino and photon background by primordial black holes (PBHs). We model this phenomenon as a gravitational interaction that effectively modifies the continuity equations for radiation and PBH densities and the cosmic expansion history. We find that the observability of this modified cosmic history is highly sensitive to PBH mass, and only extraordinarily massive PBHs would leave observable trace on the temperature and E-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Specifically, Planck data restrict PBH abundance to $f_{\rm pbh}\lesssim 10^{-1}$ for PBH masses above $10^{15} M_\odot$, getting considerably tighter for higher masses. We expect substantial improvement as high-resolution measurements of larger CMB multipoles become available. A future cosmic-variance-limited experiment, with $\ell_{\rm max}=7000$, would set $f_{\rm pbh}\lesssim 10^{-1}-8\times 10^{-5}$ (for the fiducial $Λ$CDM cosmology) across $10^{13}-10^{18}M_\odot$. These constraints would be comparable to the current limits at the high-mass end of the spectrum [Carr et al, 2026]. The gravitational interaction of PBHS with the cosmic background radiation and its imprints on CMB would thus provide an independent complementary probe of extraordinarily massive PBH abundance.

Quantifying Weighted Morphological Content of Large-Scale Structures via Simulation-Based Inference

We perform a simulation-based forecasting analysis to compare the cosmological constraining power of higher-order summary statistics of the large-scale structure, the Minkowski Functionals (MFs) and a class weighted morphological measure known as the Conditional Moments of Derivatives (CMD), with that of the redshift-space halo power spectrum multipoles (PS), with a particular focus on their sensitivity to nonlinear and anisotropic features in redshift space. Our analysis relies on halo catalogs from the Big Sobol Sequence simulations at redshift $z=0.5$, employing a likelihood-free inference framework implemented via neural posterior estimation. At the fiducial Quijote cosmology and for a Gaussian smoothing scale of $R=15\,h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}$, CMD provide systematically tighter constraints than MFs. Combining MFs and CMD into a joint estimator improves the precision by $27\%^{+9\%}_{-5\%}$ for $σ_8$ and $26\%^{+7\%}_{-5\%}$ for $Ω_{\mathrm{m}}$ relative to MFs alone, highlighting the complementary anisotropy-sensitive information captured by the CMD in contrast to the scalar morphological content encapsulated by the MFs. We compare the combined statistic MFs+CMD with the PS at matched effective scales ($k_{\max}\simeq0.16\,h\,\mathrm{Mpc^{-1}}$) under three halo-selection conditions: all halos, fixed number density, and mass-selected ($M>3\times10^{13}\,h^{-1}M_\odot$). In the mass-selected configuration, the (weighted) morphological estimator outperforms the power spectrum by $45\%^{+20\%}_{-9\%}$ for $σ_8$ and $43\%^{+10\%}_{-7\%}$ for $Ω_{\mathrm{m}}$. We also extend the simulation-based forecast analysis across a continuous range of cosmological parameters and multiple smoothing scales for morphological measures.

Graph-based Summary Statistics for Revealing the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background in Pulsar Timing Arrays

In this work, we propose a graph-based method implemented on the pulsar timing residuals (PTRs) for stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) detection within the nano-Hertz frequency regime and examining uncertainties of its parameters. We construct a correlation graph with pulsars as its nodes, and analyze the graph-based summary statistics, including structural characteristics of complex network, for identifying SGWB in the real and synthetic datasets. The effect of the number of pulsars, the observation time span, and the strength of the SGWB on the graph-based feature vector is evaluated. Our results demonstrate that the Discriminative Summary Statistics for common signal detection consists of the average clustering coefficient and the edge weight fluctuation. The SGWB detection conducted after the observation of a common signal and then exclusion of non-Hellings \& Downs templates is performed by the second cumulant of edge weight for angular separation thresholds $\barζ\gtrsim 40^{\circ}$. The lowest detectable value of SGWB strain amplitude utilizing our graph-based measures at the current PTAs sensitivity is $A_{\rm SGWB}\gtrsim 1.2\times 10^{-15}$. Fisher forecasts confirmed that the uncertainty levels of $\log_{10} A_{\rm SGWB}$ and spectral index reach $1.5\%$ and $19.5\%$, respectively, at $2σ$ confidence interval. A weak evidence for an SGWB at $\sim 2.3σ$ level is obtained by applying our graph-based method to the NANOGrav 15-year dataset.

Cosmic Strings-induced CMB anisotropies in light of Weighted Morphology

Motivated by the morphological measures in assessing the geometrical and topological properties of a generic cosmological stochastic field, we propose an extension of the weighted morphological measures, specifically the $n$th conditional moments of derivative (cmd-$n$). This criterion assigns a distinct weight to each excursion set point based on the associated field. We apply the cmd-$n$ on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) to identify the cosmic string networks (CSs) through their unique Gott-Kaiser-Stebbins effect on the temperature anisotropies. We also formulate the perturbative expansion of cmd-$n$ for the weak non-Gaussian regime up to $\mathcal{O}(σ_0^3)$. We propose a comprehensive pipeline designed to analyze the morphological properties of string-induced CMB maps within the flat sky approximation. To evaluate the robustness of our proposed criteria, we employ string-induced high-resolution flat-sky CMB simulated patches of $7.2$ deg$^2$ size with a resolution of $0.42$ arc-minutes. Our results demonstrate that the minimum detectable value of cosmic string tension is $Gμ\gtrsim 1.9\times 10^{-7}$ when a noise-free map is analyzed with normalized cmd-$n$. Whereas for the ACT, CMB-S4, and Planck-like experiments at 95.45\% confidence level, the normalized cmd-$n$ can distinguish the CSs network for $Gμ\gtrsim2.9 \times 10^{-7}$, $Gμ\gtrsim 2.4\times 10^{-7}$ and $Gμ\gtrsim 5.8\times 10^{-7}$, respectively. The normalized cmd-$n$ exhibits a significantly enhanced capability in detecting CSs relative to the Minkowski Functionals.

Impact of Redshift Space Distortion on Persistent Homology of cosmic matter density field

By employing summary statistics obtained from Persistent Homology (PH), we investigate the influence of Redshift Space Distortions (RSD) on the topology of excursion sets formed through the super-level filtration method applied to three-dimensional matter density fields. The synthetic fields simulated by the Quijote suite in both real and redshift spaces are smoothed by accounting for the Gaussian smoothing function with different scales. The RSD leads a tendency for clusters ($\tildeβ_0$) to shift towards higher thresholds, while filament loops ($\tildeβ_1$) and cosmic voids ($\tildeβ_2$) migrate towards lower thresholds. Notably, $\tildeβ_2$ exhibits greater sensitivity to RSD compared to clusters and independent loops. As the smoothing scales increase, the amplitude of the reduced Betti number curve ($\tildeβ_k$) decreases, and the corresponding peak position shifts towards the mean threshold. Conversely, the amplitude of $\tildeβ_k$ remains almost unchanged with variations in redshift for $z\in[0-3]$. The analysis of persistent entropy and the overall abundance of $k$-holes indicates that the linear Kaiser effect plays a significant role compared to the non-linear effect for $R \gtrsim 30$ Mpc $h^{-1}$ at $z=0$, whereas persistent entropy proves to be a reliable measure against non-linear influences.

Imprint of massive neutrinos on Persistent Homology of large-scale structure

Exploiting the Persistent Homology technique and its complementary representations, we examine the footprint of summed neutrino mass ($M_ν$) in the various density fields simulated by the publicly available Quijote suite. The evolution of topological features by utilizing the super-level filtration on three-dimensional density fields at zero redshift, reveals a remarkable benchmark for constraining the cosmological parameters, particularly $M_ν$ and $σ_8$. The abundance of independent closed surfaces (voids) compared to the connected components (clusters) and independent loops (filaments), is more sensitive to the presence of $M_ν$ for $R=5$ Mpc $h^{-1}$ irrespective of whether using the total matter density field ($m$) or CDM+baryons field ($cb$). Reducing the degeneracy between $M_ν$ and $σ_8$ is achieved via Persistent Homology for the $m$ field but not for the $cb$ field. The uncertainty of $M_ν$ at $1σ$ confidence interval from the joint analysis of Persistent Homology vectorization for the $m$ and $cb$ fields smoothed by $R=5$ Mpc $h^{-1}$ at $z=0$ reaches $0.0152$ eV and $0.1242$ eV, respectively. Noticing the use of the 3-dimensional underlying density field at $z=0$, the mentioned uncertainties can be treated as the theoretical lower limits.

Probing the Anisotropy and Non-Gaussianity in the Redshift Space through the Conditional Moments of the First Derivative

Focusing on the redshift space observations with plane-parallel approximation and relying on the rotational dependency of the general definition of excursion sets, we introduce the so-called conditional moments of the first derivative ($cmd$) measures for the smoothed matter density field in three dimensions. We derive the perturbative expansion of $cmd$ for the real space and redshift space where peculiar velocity disturbs the galaxies' observed locations. Our criteria can successfully recognize the contribution of linear Kaiser and Finger-of-God effects. Our results demonstrate that the $cmd$ measure has significant sensitivity for pristine constraining the redshift space distortion parameter $β=f/b$ and interestingly, the associated normalized quantity in the Gaussian linear Kaiser limit has only $β$ dependency. Implementation of the synthetic anisotropic Gaussian field approves the consistency between the theoretical and numerical results. Including the first-order contribution of non-Gaussianity perturbatively in the $cmd$ criterion implies that the N-body simulations for the Quijote suite in the redshift space have been mildly skewed with a higher value for the threshold greater than zero. The non-Gaussianity for the perpendicular direction to the line of sight in the redshift space for smoothing scales $R\gtrsim 20$ Mpc h$^{-1}$ is almost the same as the real space. In contrast, the non-Gaussianity along the line of sight direction in redshift space is magnified. The Fisher forecasts indicate an almost significant enhancement in constraining the cosmological parameters, $Ω_m$, $σ_8$, and $n_s$ when using $cmd+cr$ jointly.

CMB Polarization by the Asymmetric Template of Scalar Perturbations

Inspired by a dipole asymmetric template for the CMB temperature map in the primordial scalar fluctuations observed by Planck at a large scale, we examine the contribution of a similar template for power asymmetry in modifying the linear polarization pattern of CMB. Replacing un-modulated temperature fluctuation with dipolar modulated one in time evolution equations somehow breaks linear perturbation in the various components of the CMB map. This non-linearity allows deflecting CMB polarization in patterns that contain divergence-free components. The explicit expressions for the angular power spectra of the electric and magnetic-type parities of linear polarization are derived in the form of the line of sight integral solutions. Our results demonstrate that the electric-type polarization is modified and the magnetic-type polarization would be produced. Such imprints depend on the linear and square of the asymmetric amplitude for $E$- and $B$-modes power spectra, respectively. For the observed dipole template, the value of $B$ polarization spectrum at the large scale ($\ell\lesssim 10$) is almost equivalent to the power spectrum obtained from Compton scattering in the presence of tensor perturbation with tensor to scalar ratio about $r\simeq0.005$.

Clustering of Excursion Sets in Financial Market

Relying on the excursion set theory, we compute the number density of local extrema and crossing statistics versus the threshold for the stock market indices. Comparing the number density of excursion sets calculated numerically with the theoretical prediction for the Gaussian process confirmed that all data sets used in this paper have a surplus (almost lack) value of local extrema (up-crossing) density at low (high) thresholds almost around the mean value implying universal properties for stock indices. We estimate the clustering of geometrical measures based on the excess probability of finding the pairs of excursion sets, which clarify well statistical coherency between markets located in the same geographical region. The cross-correlation of excursion sets between various markets is also considered to construct the matrix of agglomerative hierarchical clustering. Our results demonstrate that the peak statistics is more capable of capturing blocks. Incorporating the partitioning approach, we implement the Singular Value Decomposition on the matrix containing the maximum value of unweighted Two-Point Correlation Function of peaks and up-crossing to compute the similarity measure. Our results support that excursion sets are more sensitive than standard measures to elucidate the existence of {\it a priori} crisis.

Persistent Homology of Fractional Gaussian Noise

In this paper, we employ the persistent homology (PH) technique to examine the topological properties of fractional Gaussian noise (fGn). We develop the weighted natural visibility graph algorithm, and the associated simplicial complexes through the filtration process are quantified by PH. The evolution of the homology group dimension represented by Betti numbers demonstrates a strong dependency on the Hurst exponent ($H$). The coefficients of the birth and death curve of the $k$-dimensional topological holes ($k$-holes) at a given threshold depend on $H$ which is almost not affected by finite sample size. We show that the distribution function of a lifetime for $k$-holes decays exponentially and the corresponding slope is an increasing function versus $H$, and more interestingly, the sample size effect completely disappears in this quantity. The persistence entropy logarithmically grows with the size of the visibility graph of a system with almost $H$-dependent prefactors. On the contrary, the local statistical features are not able to determine the corresponding Hurst exponent of fGn data, while the moments of eigenvalue distribution ($M_{n}$) for $n\ge1$ reveal a dependency on $H$, containing the sample size effect. Finally, the PH shows the correlated behavior of electroencephalography for both healthy and schizophrenic samples.

Homology Groups of Embedded Fractional Brownian Motion

A well-known class of non-stationary self-similar time series is the fractional Brownian motion (fBm) considered to model ubiquitous stochastic processes in nature. In this paper, we study the homology groups of high-dimensional point cloud data (PCD) constructed from synthetic fBm data. We covert the simulated fBm series to a PCD, a subset of unit $D$-dimensional cube, employing the time delay embedding method for a given embedding dimension and a time-delay parameter. In the context of persistent homology (PH), we compute topological measures for embedded PCD as a function of associated Hurst exponent, $H$, for different embedding dimensions, time-delays and amount of irregularity existed in the dataset in various scales. Our results show that for a regular synthetic fBm, the higher value of the embedding dimension leads to increasing the $H$-dependency of topological measures based on zeroth and first homology groups. To achieve a reliable classification of fBm, we should consider the small value of time-delay irrespective of the irregularity presented in the data. More interestingly, the value of scale for which the PCD to be path-connected and the post-loopless regime scale are more robust concerning irregularity for distinguishing the fBm signal. Such robustness becomes less for the higher value of embedding dimension.

Planck Limits on Cosmic String Tension Using Machine Learning

We develop two parallel machine-learning pipelines to estimate the contribution of cosmic strings (CSs), conveniently encoded in their tension ($Gμ$), to the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background radiation observed by {\it Planck}. The first approach is tree-based and feeds on certain map features derived by image processing and statistical tools. The second uses convolutional neural network with the goal to explore possible non-trivial features of the CS imprints. The two pipelines are trained on {\it Planck} simulations and when applied to {\it Planck} \texttt{SMICA} map yield the $3σ$ upper bound of $Gμ\lesssim 8.6\times 10^{-7}$. We also train and apply the pipelines to make forecasts for futuristic CMB-S4-like surveys and conservatively find their minimum detectable tension to be $Gμ_{\rm min}\sim 1.9\times 10^{-7}$.

Clustering of Local Extrema in Planck CMB maps

The clustering of local extrema will be exploited to examine Gaussianity, asymmetry, and the footprint of the cosmic-string network on the CMB observed by Planck. The number density of local extrema ($n_{\rm pk}$ for peak and $n_{\rm tr}$ for trough) and sharp clipping ($n_{\rm pix}$) statistics support the Gaussianity hypothesis for all component separations. However, the pixel at the threshold reveals a more consistent treatment with respect to end-to-end simulations. A very tiny deviation from associated simulations in the context of trough density, in the threshold range $θ\in [-2-0]$ for NILC and CR component separations, are detected. The unweighted two-point correlation function, of the local extrema, illustrates good consistency between different component separations and corresponding Gaussian simulations for almost all available thresholds. However, for high thresholds, a small deficit in the clustering of peaks is observed with respect to the Planck fiducial $Λ$CDM model. To put a significant constraint on the amplitude of the mass function based on the value of $Ψ$ around the Doppler peak ($θ\approx 70-75$ arcmin), we should consider $\vartheta\lesssim 0.0$. The scale-independent bias factors for the peak above a threshold for large separation angle and high threshold level are in agreement with the value expected for a pure Gaussian CMB. Applying the $n_{\rm pk}$, $n_{\rm tr}$, $Ψ_{\rm pk-pk}$ and $Ψ_{\rm tr-tr}$ measures on the tessellated CMB map with patches of $7.5^2$ deg$^2$ size prove statistical isotropy in the Planck maps. The peak clustering analysis puts the upper bound on the cosmic-string tension, $Gμ^{(\rm up)} \lesssim 5.59\times 10^{-7}$, in SMICA.

Cosmological consequences of intrinsic alignments super-sample covariance

We examine cosmological constraints from high precision weak lensing surveys including super-sample covariance (SSC) due to the finite survey volume. Specifically, we focus on the contribution of {\it beat coupling} in the intrinsic alignments as a part of full cosmic shear signal under flat sky approximation. The SSC-effect grows by going to lower redshift bin and indicates considerable footprint on the intermediate and high multipoles for cumulative signal to noise ratio (SNR). The SNR is reduced by $\approx 10\%$ as a consequence of including the intrinsic alignments super-sample covariance, for the full cosmic shear signal, depending on the amplitude of intrinsic alignments, the ellipticity dispersion and the survey redshift ranges, while the contribution of photometric redshift error can be ignored in the cumulative signal to noise ratio. Using the Fisher-matrix formalism, we find that the impact of large modes beyond the volume of the surveys on the small modes alters the intrinsic alignments. However, corresponding impact on the cosmological parameters estimation is marginal compared to that of for gravitational weak lensing, particularly, when all available redshift bins are considered. Our results also demonstrate that, including SSC-effect on the intrinsic alignments in the analytical covariance matrix of full cosmic shear leads to increase marginally the confidence interval for $σ_8$ by $\approx 10\%$ for a sample with almost high intrinsic alignments amplitude.

Birefringent Graphene Oxide Liquid Crystals in Micro-channels for Optical Switch

We propose a mechanical-hydrodynamical experimental setup in which the microfluidic motion manipulates the optical birefringence of levitated graphene oxide liquid crystal. The birefringence of the sample is changed by flowing graphene oxide liquid crystal in the micro-channel. By measuring the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices at five flow rates, one can determine the value of the birefringence of the samples, precisely. Our results demonstrate that, by adjusting the concentration and flow rate of dispersion of the graphene oxide nano flakes, the induced birefringence can be controlled. It is also shown that this approach can be used as an optical switch.

The Three Hundred Project: correcting for the hydrostatic-equilibrium mass bias in X-ray and SZ surveys

Accurate and precise measurements of masses of galaxy clusters are key to derive robust constraints on cosmological parameters. Rising evidence from observations, however, confirms that X-ray masses, obtained under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium, might be underestimated, as previously predicted by cosmological simulations. We analyse more than 300 simulated massive clusters, from `The Three Hundred Project', and investigate the connection between mass bias and several diagnostics extracted from synthetic X-ray images of these simulated clusters. We find that the azimuthal scatter measured in 12 sectors of the X-ray flux maps is a statistically significant indication of the presence of an intrinsic (i.e. 3D) clumpy gas distribution. We verify that a robust correction to the hydrostatic mass bias can be inferred when estimates of the gas inhomogeneity from X-ray maps (such as the azimuthal scatter or the gas ellipticity) are combined with the asymptotic external slope of the gas density or pressure profiles, which can be respectively derived from X-ray and millimetric (Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect) observations. We also obtain that mass measurements based on either gas density and temperature or gas density and pressure result in similar distributions of the mass bias. In both cases, we provide corrections that help reduce both the dispersion and skewness of the mass bias distribution. These are effective even when irregular clusters are included leading to interesting implications for the modelling and correction of hydrostatic mass bias in cosmological analyses of current and future X-ray and SZ cluster surveys.

Light scattering through the graphene oxide liquid crystal in a micro-channel

In this paper, we examine the light scattering by the flow of levitated flakes in a micro-channel to characterize the tunable functionality of the graphene oxide liquid crystal in the nematic phase. Light interaction with the mentioned material is decomposed to the scattered and transmitted parts and they can determine the orientation of the flakes. Our results demonstrate that, pumping the graphene oxide sample through the micro-channel leads to increase the amplitude of scattered light. The time averaged of scattered light intensity grows by increasing volume fraction. We also find that, the higher volume fraction, the sooner reaching to saturated normalized scattered intensity is. To get deep insight about our experimental results, we rely on the general theoretical properties of the light scattering cross-section incorporating the fluctuation of director vector and dielectric tensor. Our proposal is a promising approach to carry out the mechanical-hydrodynamical approach for controlling the orientation of a typical liquid crystal.
