On the Performance of Multihop THz Wireless System Over Mixed Channel Fading with Shadowing and Antenna Misalignment

The existing relay-assisted terahertz (THz) wireless system is limited to dual-hop transmission with pointing errors and short-term fading without considering the shadowing effect. This paper analyzes the performance of a multihop-assisted backhaul communication mixed with an access link under the shadowed fading with antenna misalignment errors. We derive statistical results of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the multihop link by considering independent but not identically distributed (i.ni.d) $α$-$μ$ fading channel with pointing errors employing channel-assisted (CA) and fixed-gain (FG) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying for each hop. We analyze the outage probability, average BER, and ergodic capacity performance of the mixed system considering the generalized-$K$ shadowed fading model with AF and decode-and-forward (DF) protocols employed for the access link. We derive exact expressions of the performance metrics for the CA-multihop system with the DF relaying for the last hop and upper bound of the performance for the FG-multihop system using FG and DF relaying at the last relay. We also develop asymptotic analysis in the high SNR to derive the diversity order of the system and use computer simulations to provide design and deployment aspects of multiple relays in the backhaul link to extend the communication range for THz wireless transmissions.

Unified Performance Assessment of Optical Wireless Communication over Multi-Layer Underwater Channels

In this paper, we model the multi-layer vertical underwater link as a cascaded channel and unify the performance analysis for the underwater optical communication (UWOC) system using generalized Gamma (GG), exponential GG (EGG), exponentiated Weibull (EW), and Gamma-Gamma (ΓΓ) oceanic turbulence models. We derive unified analytical expressions for probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) for the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) considering independent and non-identical (i.ni.d.) turbulent models and zero bore-sight model for pointing errors. We develop performance metrics of the considered UWOC system using outage probability, average bit error rate (BER), and ergodic capacity with asymptotic expressions for outage probability and average BER. We develop the diversity order of the proposed system to provide a better insight into the system performance at a high SNR. We also integrate a terrestrial OWC (TOWC) subjected to the combined effect of generalized Malaga atmospheric turbulence, fog-induced random path gain, and pointing errors to communicate with the UWOC link using the fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying. We analyze the performance of the mixed TWOC and multi-layer UWOC system by deriving PDF, CDF, outage probability, and average BER using the bivariate Fox H-function. We use Monte-Carlo simulation results to validate our exact and asymptotic expressions and demonstrate the performance of the considered underwater UWOC system using measurement-based parametric data available for turbulent oceanic channels.

Performance of Hybrid THz and Multi-Antenna RF System with Diversity Combining

Recent studies investigate single-antenna radio frequency (RF) systems mixed with terahertz (THz) wireless communications. This paper considers a two-tier system of THz for backhaul and multiple-antenna assisted RF for the access network. We analyze the system performance by employing both selection combining (SC) and maximal ratio combining (MRC) receivers for the RF link integrated with the THz using the fixed-gain amplify and forward (AF) protocol. We develop the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end signal-to-noise (SNR) of the dual-hop system over independent and non-identically distributed (i.ni.d.) $α$-$μ$ fading channels with a statistical model for misalignment errors in the THz wireless link. We use the derived statistical results to develop analytical expressions of the outage probability, average bit error rate (BER), and ergodic capacity for the performance assessment of the considered system. We develop diversity order of the system using asymptotic analysis in the high SNR region, demonstrating the scaling of system performance with the number of antennas. We use computer simulations to show the effect of system and channel parameters on the performance of the hybrid THz-RF link with multi-antenna diversity schemes.

Unified Performance Analysis of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Empowered Free Space Optical Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an excellent use case for line-of-sight (LOS) based technologies such as free-space optical (FSO) communications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of RIS-empowered FSO (RISE-FSO) systems by unifying Fisher-Snedecor (F), Gamma-Gamma (GG), and Malaga (M) distributions for atmospheric turbulence with zero-boresight pointing errors over deterministic as well as random path-loss in foggy conditions with heterodyne detection (HD) and intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) methods. By deriving the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the direct-link (DL) with the statistical effect of atmospheric turbulence, pointing errors, and random fog, we develop exact expressions of PDF and CDF of the resultant channel for the RISE-FSO system. Using the derived statistical results, we present exact expressions of outage probability, average bit-error-rate (BER), ergodic capacity, and moments of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both DL-FSO and RISE-FSO systems. We also develop an asymptotic analysis of the outage probability and average BER and derive the diversity order of the considered systems. We validate the analytical expressions using Monte-Carlo simulations and demonstrate the performance scaling of the FSO system with the number of RIS elements for various turbulence channels, detection techniques, and weather conditions.

Performance of Dual-Hop Relaying for OWC System Over Foggy Channel with Pointing Errors and Atmospheric Turbulence

Optical wireless communication (OWC) over atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors is a well-studied topic. Still, there is limited research on signal fading due to random fog in an outdoor environment for terrestrial wireless communications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence with a negligible line-of-sight (LOS) direct link. We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) pointing errors, random fog with Gamma distributed attenuation coefficient, double generalized gamma (DGG) atmospheric turbulence, and asymmetrical distance between the source and destination. We develop density and distribution functions of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence (FPT) channel and distribution function for the combined channel with random fog and pointing errors (FP). Using the derived statistical results, we present analytical expressions of the outage probability, average SNR, ergodic rate, and average bit error rate (BER) for both FP and FPT channels in terms of OWC system parameters. We also develop simplified and asymptotic performance analysis to provide insight on the system behavior analytically under various practically relevant scenarios. We demonstrate the mutual effects of channel impairments and pointing errors on the OWC performance, and show that the relaying system provides significant performance improvement compared with the direct transmissions, especially when pointing errors and fog becomes more pronounced.

Fixed-Gain AF Relaying for RF-THz Wireless System over $α$-$κ$-$μ$ Shadowed and $α$-$μ$ Channels

Recent research investigates the decode-and-forward (DF) relaying for mixed radio frequency (RF) and terahertz (THz) wireless links with zero-boresight pointing errors. In this letter, we analyze the performance of a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying for the RF-THz link to interface the access network on the RF technology with wireless THz transmissions. We develop probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end SNR for the relay-assisted system in terms of bivariate Fox's H function considering $α$-$μ$ fading for the THz system with non-zero boresight pointing errors and $α$-$κ$-$μ$ shadowed ($α$-KMS) fading model for the RF link. Using the derived PDF and CDF, we present exact analytical expressions of the outage probability, average bit-error-rate (BER), and ergodic capacity of the considered system. We also analyze the outage probability and average BER asymptotically for a better insight into the system behavior at high SNR. We use simulations to compare the performance of the AF relaying having a semi-blind gain factor with the recently proposed DF relaying for THz-RF transmissions.

Performance Analysis of Dual-Hop THz Wireless Transmission for Backhaul Applications

THz transmissions suffer from pointing errors due to antenna misalignment and incur higher path loss from the molecular absorption in addition to the channel fading. In this paper, we employ an amplify-and-forward (AF) dual-hop relaying to mitigate the effect of pointing errors and extend the range of the THz wireless system for backhaul connectivity. We provide statistical analysis on the performance of the considered system by deriving analytical expressions for the outage probability, average bit-error-rate (BER), average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and a lower bound on the ergodic capacity over independent and identical (i.i.d) $α$-$μ$ fading combined with the statistical effect of pointing errors. Using computer simulations, we validate the derived analysis of the relay-assisted system. We also demonstrate the effect of the system parameters on outage probability and average BER with the help of diversity order. We show that data rates up to several \mbox{Gbps} can be achieved using THz transmissions, which is desirable for next-generation wireless systems, especially for backhaul applications.

Multihop RIS-Assisted FSO-RF System Over Double Generalized Gamma Fading

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology to avoid signal blockage by creating virtual line-of-sight (LOS) connectivity for free-space optical (FSO) and radio frequency (RF) wireless systems. This paper considers a mixed FSO-RF system by employing multiple RISs in both the links for multihop transmissions to extend the communication range. We develop probability density function (PDF) and cumulative density function (CDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the cascaded channels by considering double generalized gamma (dGG) turbulence with pointing errors for the FSO link and the dGG distribution to model the signal fading for the RF. We derive exact closed-form expressions of the outage probability, average bit-error-rate (BER), and ergodic capacity using the decode-and-forward (DF) relaying for the mixed system. We also present asymptotic analysis on the performance in the high SNR regime depicting the impact of channel parameters on the diversity order of the system. We use computer simulations to demonstrate the effect of system and channel parameters on the RIS-aided multihop transmissions.

Terahertz Wireless Transmissions with Maximal Ratio Combining over Fluctuating Two-Ray Fading

Mitigating channel fading and transceiver impairments are desirable for high-speed terahertz (THz) wireless links. This paper analyzes the performance of a multi-antenna THz wireless system by considering the combined effect of pointing errors and fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading model. We provide a statistical characterization of the maximal ratio combining (MRC) receiver over independent and nonidentical (i.ni.d.) channel conditions in terms of multi-variate Fox's H by deriving density and distribution functions of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a single-link THz link using incomplete Gamma function. We develop exact analytical expressions of outage probability, average bit-error-rate (BER), and ergodic capacity for both single-antenna and MRC receivers. We also present the diversity order of the system by deriving asymptotic expressions for outage probability and average BER at high SNR to obtain insights into the system performance. We validate our derived analytical expressions with Monte-Carlo simulations and demonstrate the effect of various system and channel parameters on the performance of single and multi-antenna THz wireless communications.

Performance Analysis of Dual-Hop Relaying for THz-RF Wireless Link with Asymmetrical Fading

Terahertz (THz) frequency bands can be promising for data transmissions between the core network and access points (AP) for next-generation wireless systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a dual-hop THz-RF wireless system where an AP facilitates data transmission between a core network and user equipment (UE). We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with an independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) fading model for THz and RF links using the $α$-$μ$ distribution, the THz link with pointing errors, and asymmetrical relay position. We derive a closed-form expression of the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the THz-RF link, which is valid for continuous values of $μ$ for a generalized performance analysis over THz fading channels. Using the derived CDF, we analyze the performance of the THz-RF relayed system using decode-and-forward (DF) protocol by deriving analytical expressions of diversity order, moments of SNR, ergodic capacity, and average BER in terms of system parameters. We also analyze the considered system with an i.i.d. model and develop simplified performance to provide insight on the system behavior analytically under various practically relevant scenarios. Simulation and numerical analysis show a significant effect of fading parameters of the THz link and a nominal effect of normalized beam-width on the performance of the relay-assisted THz-RF system.

Performance of Dual-Hop Relaying for THz-RF Wireless Link

The use of Terahertz (THz) frequency bands for data transmissions between the core network and an access point can be promising for next generation wireless systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a dual-hop relaying for THz-RF wireless link for backhaul applications. Considering the $α-μ$ fading channel and a statistical model of pointing errors, we derive a novel closed-form expression of the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the THz link, which is also valid for non-integer values of $μ$. Using the CDF, we derive analytical expressions of the end-to-end SNR and lower bound on ergodic capacity of a decode-and-forward (DF) assisted THz-RF relaying in terms of system parameters. Using analytical results of the direct link and computer simulations, we demonstrate that the THz-RF relaying is a viable technology for wireless backhaul, providing a significant increase of almost $25 \%$ in the spectral efficiency, compared to the direct transmissions.

Simplified Performance Analysis of OWC System Over Atmospheric Turbulence with Pointing Error

Optical wireless communication (OWC) is highly vulnerable to the atmospheric turbulence and pointing error. Performance analysis of the OWC system under the combined channel effects of pointing errors and atmospheric turbulence is desirable for its efficient deployment. The widely used Gamma- Gamma statistical model for atmospheric turbulence, which consists of Bessel function, generally leads to complicated analytical expressions. In this paper, we consider the three-parameter exponentiated Weibull model for the atmospheric turbulence to analyze the ergodic rate and average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance of a single-link OWC system. We derive simplified analytical expressions on the performance under the combined effect of atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors in terms of system parameters. We also derive approximate expressions on the performance under the atmospheric turbulence by considering negligible pointing error. In order to evaluate the performance at high SNR, we also develop asymptotic bounds on the average SNR and ergodic rate for the considered system. We demonstrate the tightness of derived expressions through numerical and simulation analysis along with a comparison to the performance obtained using the Gamma-Gamma model.

Performance Analysis of Relay-Assisted OWC Over Foggy Channel with Pointing Error

Signal fading due to atmospheric channel impairments and pointing error is a major bottleneck for the performance of optical wireless communication (OWC). In this paper, we consider an amplify-and-forward (AF) optical relaying to enhance the performance of the OWC system with a negligible line-of-sight (LOS) link under the combined effect of fog and pointing error. We analyze the end-to-end performance of the relay-assisted system, which consists of complicated probability distribution functions. We derive analytical expressions of the outage probability, average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and ergodic rate in terms of OWC system parameters. We also develop an exact integral-form expression of these performance metrics using the half-harmonic mean of individual SNRs to validate the tightness of the derived analytical expressions. The numerical and simulation analysis shows that the proposed dual-hop relaying has significant performance improvement when comparing to the direct transmission over considered channel impairments. Compared to the direct transmission, the relay-assisted system requires almost $30$ times less transmission power to achieve the same outage probability. The considered system also provides a significant gain in the average SNR and ergodic rate for practical scenarios of OWC deployment.

Multi-Gigabit Wireline Systems over Copper: An Interference Cancellation Perspective

Interference cancellation is the main driving technology in enhancing the transmission rates over telephone lines above 100 Mbps. Still, crosstalk interference in multi-pair digital subscriber line (DSL) systems at higher frequencies has not been dealt with sufficiently. The upcoming G.(mg) fast DSL system envisions the use of extremely high bandwidth and full-duplex transmissions generating significantly higher crosstalk and self-interference signals. More powerful interference cancellation techniques are required to enable multi-gigabit per second data rate transmission over copper lines. In this article, we analyze the performance of interference cancellation techniques, with a focus on novel research approaches and design considerations for efficient interference mitigation for multi-gigabit transmission over standard copper lines. We also detail novel approaches for interference cancellation in the upcoming technologies.

Distributed Learning for Channel Allocation Over a Shared Spectrum

Channel allocation is the task of assigning channels to users such that some objective (e.g., sum-rate) is maximized. In centralized networks such as cellular networks, this task is carried by the base station which gathers the channel state information (CSI) from the users and computes the optimal solution. In distributed networks such as ad-hoc and device-to-device (D2D) networks, no base station exists and conveying global CSI between users is costly or simply impractical. When the CSI is time varying and unknown to the users, the users face the challenge of both learning the channel statistics online and converge to a good channel allocation. This introduces a multi-armed bandit (MAB) scenario with multiple decision makers. If two users or more choose the same channel, a collision occurs and they all receive zero reward. We propose a distributed channel allocation algorithm that each user runs and converges to the optimal allocation while achieving an order optimal regret of O\left(\log T\right). The algorithm is based on a carrier sensing multiple access (CSMA) implementation of the distributed auction algorithm. It does not require any exchange of information between users. Users need only to observe a single channel at a time and sense if there is a transmission on that channel, without decoding the transmissions or identifying the transmitting users. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm using simulated LTE and 5G channels.

Stochastic-Geometry Based Characterization of Aggregate Interference in TVWS Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, we characterize the worst-case interference for a finite-area TV white space heterogeneous network using the tools of stochastic geometry. We derive closed-form expressions on the probability distribution function (PDF) and an average value of the aggregate interference for various values of path loss exponent. The proposed characterization of the interference is simple and can be used in improving the spectrum access techniques. Using the derived PDF, we demonstrate the performance gain in the spectrum detection of an eigenvalue-based detector for cognitive radio networks.

Large Matrix Asymptotic Analysis of ZF and MMSE Crosstalk Cancelers for Wireline Channels

We present asymptotic expressions for user throughput in a multi-user wireline system with a linear decoder, in increasingly large system sizes. This analysis can be seen as a generalization of results obtained for wireless communication. The features of the diagonal elements of the wireline channel matrices make wireless asymptotic analyses inapplicable for wireline systems. Further, direct application of results from random matrix theory (RMT) yields a trivial lower bound. This paper presents a novel approach to asymptotic analysis, where an alternative sequence of systems is constructed that includes the system of interest in order to approximate the spectral efficiency of the linear zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) crosstalk cancelers. Using works in the field of large dimensional random matrices, we show that the user rate in this sequence converges to a non-zero rate. The approximation of the user rate for both the ZF and MMSE cancelers are very simple to evaluate and does not need to take specific channel realizations into account. The analysis reveals the intricate behavior of the throughput as a function of the transmission power and the channel crosstalk. This unique behavior has not been observed for linear decoders in other systems. The approximation presented here is much more useful for the next generation G.fast wireline system than earlier digital subscriber line (DSL) systems as previously computed performance bounds, which are strictly larger than zero only at low frequencies. We also provide a numerical performance analysis over measured and simulated DSL channels which show that the approximation is accurate even for relatively low dimensional systems and is useful for many scenarios in practical DSL systems.

Energy Efficiency of Opportunistic Device-to-Device Relaying Under Lognormal Shadowing

Energy consumption is a major limitation of low power and mobile devices. Efficient transmission protocols are required to minimize an energy consumption of the mobile devices for ubiquitous connectivity in the next generation wireless networks. Opportunistic schemes select a single relay using the criteria of the best channel and achieve a near-optimal diversity performance in a cooperative wireless system. In this paper, we study the energy efficiency of the opportunistic schemes for device-to-device communication. In the opportunistic approach, an energy consumed by devices is minimized by selecting a single neighboring device as a relay using the criteria of minimum consumed energy in each transmission in the uplink of a wireless network. We derive analytical bounds and scaling laws on the expected energy consumption when the devices experience log-normal shadowing with respect to a base station considering both the transmission as well as circuit energy consumptions. We show that the protocol improves the energy efficiency of the network comparing to the direct transmission even if only a few devices are considered for relaying. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of the protocol by means of simulations in realistic scenarios of the wireless network.
