MIMIC-IV-Ext-PE: Using a large language model to predict pulmonary embolism phenotype in the MIMIC-IV dataset

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a leading cause of preventable in-hospital mortality. Advances in diagnosis, risk stratification, and prevention can improve outcomes. There are few large publicly available datasets that contain PE labels for research. Using the MIMIC-IV database, we extracted all available radiology reports of computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) scans and two physicians manually labeled the results as PE positive (acute PE) or PE negative. We then applied a previously finetuned Bio_ClinicalBERT transformer language model, VTE-BERT, to extract labels automatically. We verified VTE-BERT's reliability by measuring its performance against manual adjudication. We also compared the performance of VTE-BERT to diagnosis codes. We found that VTE-BERT has a sensitivity of 92.4% and positive predictive value (PPV) of 87.8% on all 19,942 patients with CTPA radiology reports from the emergency room and/or hospital admission. In contrast, diagnosis codes have a sensitivity of 95.4% and PPV of 83.8% on the subset of 11,990 hospitalized patients with discharge diagnosis codes. We successfully add nearly 20,000 labels to CTPAs in a publicly available dataset and demonstrate the external validity of a semi-supervised language model in accelerating hematologic research.

Coupling of structure and magnetism to spin splitting in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites are famous for the diversity of their chemical compositions, phases and phase transitions, and associated physical properties. We use a combination of experimental and computational techniques to reveal strong coupling between structure, magnetism, and spin splitting in a representative of the largest family of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites: the formates. With the help of first-principles simulations, we find spin splitting in both conduction and valence bands of [NH$_2$NH$_3$]Co(HCOO)$_3$, induced by spin-orbit interactions, which can reach up to 14~meV. Our magnetic measurements reveal that this material exhibits canted antiferromagnetism below 15.5 K. The direction of the associated antiferromagnetic order parameter is strongly coupled with the spin splitting already in the centrosymmetric phase, allowing for the creation and annihilation of spin splitting through the application of a magnetic field. Furthermore, the structural phase transition into experimentally observed polar Pna2$_1$ phase completely changes the aforementioned spin splitting and its coupling to magnetic degrees of freedom. This reveals that in [NH$_2$NH$_3$]Co(HCOO)$_3$, the structure and magnetism are strongly coupled to spin splitting in a way that allows for its manipulation through both magnetic and electric fields. As an example, for a given point inside the Brillouin zone of centrosymmetric Pnma phase of [NH$_2$NH$_3$]Co(HCOO)$_3$, spin splitting can be turned on/off by aligning the antiferromagnetic vector along certain crystallographic directions or through inducing a polar phase by the application of an electric field. We believe that our findings offer an important step toward fundamental understanding and practical applications of materials with coupled properties.

The application of encoder-decoder neural networks in high accuracy and efficiency slit-scan emittance measurements

A superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) photo injector is in operation at the electron linac for beams with high brilliance and low emittance (ELBE) radiation center and generates continuous wave (CW) electron beams with high average current and high brightness for user operation since 2018. The speed of emittance measurement at the SRF gun beamline can be increased by improving the slit-scan system, thus the measurement time for one phase space mapping can be shortened from about 15 minutes to 90 seconds. A parallel algorithm and machine learning have been used to reduce the beamlet image noise. In order to estimate the uncertainty in the calculation of normalized emittance, we analyze the main error contributions such as slit position uncertainty, image noise, space charge effects and energy measurement inaccuracy.

A photometric study of two contact binaries: CRTS J025408.1+265957 and CRTS J012111.1+272933

We performed new photometric observations for two contact binaries (i.e., CRTS J025408.1+265957 and CRTS J012111.1+272933), which were observed by the 1.0-m telescope at Xingjiang Astronomical Observatory. From our light curves and several survey data, we derived several sets of photometric solutions. We found that CRTS J025408.1+265957 and CRTS J012111.1+272933 were Aand W-type W UMa, respectively. The results imply that the spot migrates or disappears in two contact binaries, which were identified by chromospheric activity emissions (e.g. H{\alpha} emission) from LAMOST spectra. From the O-C curves, the orbital periods of two contact binaries may be increasing, which is interpreted by the mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one. With mass transferring, two contact binaries may evolve from the contact configurations to semi-detected ones as predicted by the theory of thermal relaxation oscillation.

Half-integer quantized anomalous thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev material $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$

Heat transport mediated by Majorana edge modes in a magnetic insulator leads to a half-integer thermal quantum Hall conductance, which has recently been reported for the two-dimensional honeycomb material $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. While the conventional electronic Hall effect requires a perpendicular magnetic field, we find that this is not the case in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. Strikingly, the thermal Hall plateau appears even for a magnetic field with no out-of-plane components. The field-angular variation of the quantized thermal Hall conductance has the same sign structure of the topological Chern number, which is either $\pm$1, as the Majorana band structure of the pure Kitaev spin liquid. This observation of a half-integer anomalous thermal Hall effect firmly establishes that the Kitaev interaction is primarily responsible and that the non-Abelian topological order associated with fractionalization of the local magnetic moments persists even in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$.

Precise CCD positions of Triton in 2014-2016 using the newest Gaia DR1 star catalogue

755 new CCD observations during the years 2014-2016 have been reduced to derive the precise positions of Triton, the first satellite of Neptune. The observations were made by the 1 m telescope at Yunnan Observatory over fifteen nights. The positions of Triton are measured with respect to the stars in Gaia DR1 star catalogue. The theoretical position of Triton was retrieved from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) ephemeris nep081xl, while the position of Neptune was obtained from the JPL ephemeris DE431mx. Our results show that the mean O-Cs (observed minus computed) are 0.042 and -0.006 arcsec in right ascension and declination respectively. The dispersions of our observations are estimated at about 0.012 arcsec in each direction.

New Views of EIT Wave and CME from STEREO

On 2007 December 7, a small filament located in a small active region AR 10977 erupted and led to a B1.4 flare. An EIT wave associated with this eruption was observed both by SOHO/EIT and by EUVI on board STEREO. According to the observations from SOHO/LASCO and STEREO/COR A, we found that there was no CME associated with the EIT wave. This seems to challenge the argument that the cause of EIT waves is CME. However the data from STEREO/COR B indicated that there was a narrow CME associated with the EIT wave. This suggests that studying CMEs by investigating observations made in one direction alone may not be able to guarantee the reliability of the results.
