Magnetic Properties and Electronic Configurations of Mn Ions in the Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ Studied by X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

The magnetic properties and the electronic excitations of the new diluted magnetic semiconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ have been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Mn $L_{2,3}$ edge. The sum rule analysis of the XMCD spectra yields the net spin moment of $0.45μ_{\text{B}}$/Mn and the small orbital moment of $0.05μ_{\text{B}}$/Mn. This indicates that the Mn atoms are in the high-spin configurations of $d^{5}$, whereas the presence of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions between the Mn ions reduces the net spin moment. RIXS spectra show broad peaks from 1 to 6 eV energy loss, which originate from the $d$-$d$ crystal field excitations of the Mn ions. Based on a comparison of the RIXS line shapes with those of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As, we conclude that the ground state of Mn in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ consists not only of the charge-transferred $3d^{5}\underline{L}$ electron configuration ($\underline{L}$: ligand hole) with weakly bound holes as in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As, but also of the pure $3d^{5}$ configuration with free holes.

Nuclear spin pumping by pulling effect

The nuclear-to-electron spin angular momentum conversion via hyperfine coupling in a normal metal (NM)/ferromagnet (FM) bilayer system is theoretically investigated by using the nonequilibrium Green's function method. The spin current generated by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is found to be enhanced by the pulling effect in the FM when the temperature is lower than NMR resonance frequency. In a Co/Pt bilayer system, we show that the spin current by NMR becomes larger than that of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR).

Magnetic Phase Diagram of Frustrated Spin Ladder

Frustrated spin ladders show magnetization plateaux depending on the rung-exchange interaction and frustration defined by the ratio of first and second neighbor exchange interactions in each chain. This paper is the first report on its magnetic phase diagram. Using the variational matrix-product state method, we accurately determine phase boundaries. Several kinds of magnetization plateaux are induced by the frustration and the strong correlation among quasi-particles on a lattice. The appropriate description of quasi-particles and their relevant interactions are changed by a magnetic field. We find that the frustration differentiates the triplet quasi-particle from the singlet one in kinetic energy.

Spin current noise of the spin Seebeck effect and spin pumping

We theoretically investigate the fluctuation of a pure spin current induced by the spin Seebeck effect and spin pumping in a normal metal (NM)/ferromagnet (FM) bilayer system. Starting with a simple FI--NM interface model with both spin-conserving and spin-non-conserving processes, we derive general expressions of the spin current and the spin-current noise at the interface within second-order perturbation of the FI--NM coupling strength, and estimate them for an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) --platinum interface. We show that the spin-current noise can be used to determine the effective spin carried by a magnon, modified by the spin-non-conserving process at the interface. In addition, we show that it provides information on the effective spin of a magnon, heating at the interface under spin pumping, and spin Hall angle of the NM.

Theory of spin Peltier effect

A microscopic theory of the spin Peltier effect in a bilayer structure comprising a paramagnetic metal (PM) and a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) based on the nonequilibrium Green's function method is presented. Spin current and heat current driven by temperature gradient and spin accumulation are formulated as functions of spin susceptibilities in the PM and the FI, and are summarized by Onsager's reciprocal relations. By using the current formulae, we estimate heat generation and absorption at the interface driven by the heat-current injection mediated by spins from PM into FI.

Spin transport in half-metallic ferromagnets

We theoretically investigate spin transport in half-metallic ferromagnets at finite temperatures. The side-jump and skew-scattering contributions to spin Hall conductivity are derived using the Kubo formula. The electron-magnon interaction causes a finite density of states in the energy gap of the minority-spin band and induces spin Hall conductivity. We show that spin Hall conductivity is proportional to $T^{3/2}$, with $T$ being temperature and is sensitive to $T$. We propose that spin Hall conductivity may be a tool to study the minority-spin state.

Strong Suppression of the Spin Hall Effect in the Spin Glass State

We have measured spin Hall effects in spin glass metals, CuMnBi alloys, with the spin absorption method in the lateral spin valve structure. Far above the spin glass temperature Tg where the magnetic moments of Mn impurities are randomly frozen, the spin Hall angle of CuMnBi ternary alloy is as large as that of CuBi binary alloy. Surprisingly, however, it starts to decrease at about 4Tg and becomes as little as 7 times smaller at 0.5Tg. A similar tendency was also observed in anomalous Hall effects in the ternary alloys. We propose an explanation in terms of a simple model considering the relative dynamics between the localized moment and the conduction electron spin.

Fermi Surfaces and $p$-$d$ Hybridization in the Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ Studied by Soft X-ray Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

The electronic structure of the new diluted magnetic semiconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x=0.30$, $y=0.15$) in single crystal form has been investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). %High density of states of nondispersive bands composed of the Zn $3d$ orbitals are observed with ultraviolet incident light. Measurements with soft x-rays clarify the host valence-band electronic structure primarily composed of the As $4p$ states. Two hole pockets around the $Γ$ point, a hole corrugated cylinder surrounding the $Γ$ and Z points, and an electron pocket around the Z point are observed, and explain the metallic transport of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$. This is contrasted with Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As (GaMnAs), where it is located above the As $4p$ valence-band maximum (VBM) and no Fermi surfaces have been clearly identified. Resonance soft x-ray ARPES measurements reveal a nondispersive (Kondo resonance-like) Mn $3d$ impurity band near the Fermi level, as in the case of GaMnAs. However, the impurity band is located well below the VBM, unlike the impurity band in GaMnAs, which is located around and above the VBM. We conclude that, while the strong hybridization between the Mn $3d$ and the As $4p$ orbitals plays an important role in creating the impurity band and inducing high temperature ferromagnetism in both systems, the metallic transport may predominantly occur in the host valence band in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and in the impurity band in GaMnAs.

Observation of huge thermal spin currents in magnetic multilayers

Thermal spin pumping constitutes a novel mechanism for generation of spin currents; however their weak intensity constitutes a major roadblock for its usefulness. We report a phenomenon that produces a huge spin current in the central region of a multilayer system, resulting in a giant spin Seebeck effect in a structure formed by repetition of ferromagnet/metal bilayers. The result is a consequence of the interconversion of magnon and electron spin currents at the multiple interfaces. This work opens the possibility to design thin film heterostructures that may boost the application of thermal spin currents in spintronics.

Photoemission and X-ray Absorption Studies of the Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ba$_{1-y}$K$_{y}$(Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ Isostructural to Fe-based Superconductors

The electronic and magnetic properties of a new diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, which is isostructural to so-called 122-type Fe-based superconductors, are investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonance photoemission spectroscopy (RPES). Mn $L_{2,3}$-edge XAS indicates that the doped Mn atoms have the valence 2+ and strongly hybridize with the $4p$ orbitals of the tetrahedrally coordinating As ligands. The Mn $3d$ partial density of states (PDOS) obtained by RPES shows a peak around 4 eV and relatively high between 0-2 eV below the Fermi level ($E_{F}$) with little contribution at $E_{F}$, similar to that of the archetypal DMS Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As. This energy level creates $d^{5}$ electron configuration with $S=5/2$ local magnetic moments at the Mn atoms. Hole carriers induced by K substitution for Ba atoms go into the top of the As $4p$ valence band and are weakly bound to the Mn local spins. The ferromagnetic correlation between the local spins mediated by the hole carriers induces ferromagnetism in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Origin of the Phonon Hall Effect in Rare-Earth Garnets

The phonon Hall effect has been observed in the paramagnetic insulator, Tb3Gd5O12. A magnetic field applied perpendicularly to a heat current induces a temperature gradient that is perpendicular to both the field and the current. We show that this effect is due to resonant skew scattering of phonons from the crystal field states of superstoichiometric Tb^3+ ions. This scattering originates from the coupling between the quadrupole moment of Tb^3+ ions and the lattice strain. The estimated magnitude of the effect is consistent with experimental observations at T=5 K, and can be significantly enhanced by increasing temperature.

Zero-Field Fiske Resonance Coupled with Spin-waves in Ferromagnetic Josephson Junctions

AC Josephson current density in a Josephson junction with DC bias is spatially modulated by an external magnetic field, and induces an electromagnetic (EM) field inside the junction. The current-voltage ($I$-$V$) curve exhibits peaks due to the resonance between the EM field and the spatially modulated AC Josephson current density. This is called {\it Fiske resonance}. Such a spatially modulated Josephson current density can be also induced by a non-uniform insulating barrier and the Fiske resonance appears without external magnetic field. This is called zero-field Fiske resonance (ZFFR). In this paper, we theoretically study the ZFFR coupled with spin-waves in a superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor junction (ferromagnetic Josephson junction) with a non-uniform ferromagnetic insulating barrier. The resonant mode coupled with spin-waves can be induced without external magnetic field. We find that the $I$-$V$ curve shows resonant peaks associated with composite excitations of spin-waves and the EM field in the junction. The voltage at the resonance is obtained as a function of the normal modes of EM field. The ZFFRs coupled with spin-waves are found as peak structures in the DC Josephson current density as a function of bias voltage.

Possible method to observe breathing mode of magnetic domain wall in Josephson junction

A magnetic domain wall (DW) behaves as a massive particle with elasticity. Sliding and oscillation of the DW have been observed experimentally, whereas vibration of a width in the DW, "breathing mode", has not been measured so far. We theoretically propose how to observe the breathing mode by the Josephson junction having a ferromagnetic layer between superconducting electrodes. The current-voltage (I-V) curve is calculated by an equivalent circuit of the resistively shunted junction model. The breathing mode is identified by stepwise structures in the I-V curve, which appear at the voltages V=n(hbar/2e)omega with the fundamental constant hbar/e, integer number n, and the frequency of the breathing mode omega.

Effect of anisotropic spin absorption on the Hanle effect in lateral spin valves

We have succeeded in fully describing dynamic properties of spin current including the different spin absorption mechanism for longitudinal and transverse spins in lateral spin valves, which enables to elucidate intrinsic spin transport and relaxation mechanism in the nonmagnet. The deduced spin lifetimes are found independent of the contact type. From the transit-time distribution of spin current extracted from the Fourier transform in Hanle measurement data, the velocity of the spin current in Ag with Py/Ag Ohmic contact turns out much faster than that expected from the widely used model.

New Diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Li(Zn,Mn)P with decoupled charge and spin doping

We report the discovery of a new diluted magnetic semiconductor, Li(Zn,Mn)P, in which charge and spin are introduced independently via lithium off-stoichiometry and the isovalent substitution of Mn2+ for Zn2+, respectively. Isostructural to (Ga,Mn)As, Li(Zn,Mn)P was found to be a p-type ferromagnetic semiconductor with excess Lithium providing charge doping. First principles calculations indicate that excess Li is favored to partially occupy the Zn site, leading to hole doping. Ferromagnetism is mediated in semiconducting samples of relative low mobile carriers with a small coercive force, indicating an easy spin flip.

Temperature Dependence of Thermopower in Strongly Correlated Multiorbital Systems

Temperature dependence of thermopower in the multiorbital Hubbard model is studied by using the dynamical mean-field theory with the non-crossing approximation impurity solver. It is found that the Coulomb interaction, the Hund coupling, and the crystal filed splitting bring about non-monotonic temperature dependence of the thermopower, including its sign reversal. The implication of our theoretical results to some materials is discussed.

Theory of the spin Hall effect, and its inverse, in a ferromagnetic metal near the Curie temperature

We give a theory of the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in ferromagnetic metals based on skew scattering via collective spin fluctuations. This extends Kondo's theory of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) to include short-range spin-spin correlations. We find a relation between the ISHE and the four-spin correlations near the Curie temperature TC. Such four-spin correlations do not contribute to the AHE, which relates to the three-spin correlations. Thus our theory shows an essential difference between the AHE and ISHE, providing an essential complement to Kondo's classic theory of the AHE in metals. We note the relation to skew-scattering mechanisms based on impurity scattering. Our theory can be compared to recent experimental results byWei et al. [Nat. Commun. 3, 1058 (2012)] for the ISHE in ferromagnetic alloys.

Observation of the spin Seebeck effect in epitaxial Fe3O4 thin films

We report the first experimental observation of the spin Seebeck effect in magnetite thin films. The signal observed at temperatures above the Verwey transition is a contribution from both the anomalous Nernst (ANE) and spin Seebeck effects (SSE). The contribution from the ANE of the Fe3O4 layer to the SSE is found to be negligible due to the resistivity difference between Fe3O4 and Pt layers. Below the Verwey transition the SSE is free from the ANE of the ferromagnetic layer and it is also found to dominate over the ANE due to magnetic proximity effect on the Pt layer.
