Quantum interference due to crossed Andreev reflection in a d-wave superconductor with two nano-contacts

The crossed Andreev reflection in a hybrid nanostructure consisting of a d-wave superconductor and two quantum wires is theoretically studied. When the (110) oriented surface of the superconductor is in contact with the wires parallel and placed close to each other, the Andreev bound state is formed by the crossed Andreev reflection. The conductance has two resonance peaks well below the gap structure in the case of tunnel contacts. These peaks originate from the bonding and antibonding Andreev bound states of hole wave functions.

Dynamical mean field theory of optical third harmonic generation

We formulate the third harmonic generation (THG) within the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approximation of the Hubbard model. In the limit of large dimensions, where DMFT becomes exact, the vertex corrections to current vertices are identically zero, and hence the calculation of the THG spectrum reduces to a time-ordered convolution, followd by appropriate analytic continuuation. We present the typical THG spectrum of the Hubbard model obtained by this method. Within our DMFT calculation, we observe a nontrivial approximate {\em scaling} function describing the THG spectra in all Mott insulators, independent of the gap magnitude.

Anomalous temperature dependence of the single-particle spectrum in the organic conductor TTF-TCNQ

The angle-resolved photoemission spectrum of the organic conductor TTF-TCNQ exhibits an unusual transfer of spectral weight over a wide energy range for temperatures 60K<T<260K. In order to investigate the origin of this finding, here we report numerical results on the single-particle spectral weight A(k,omega) for the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model and, in addition, for the 1D extended Hubbard and the 1D Hubbard-Holstein models. Comparisons with the photoemission data suggest that the 1D Hubbard model is not sufficient for explaining the unusual T dependence, and the long-range part of the Coulomb repulsion also needs to be included.

Nonlinear Optical Response of Spin Density Wave Insulators

We calculate the third order nonlinear optical response in the Hubbard model within the spin density wave (SDW) mean field ansatz in which the gap is due to onsite Coulomb repulsion. We obtain closed-form analytical results in one dimension (1D) and two dimension (2D), which show that nonlinear optical response in SDW insulators in 2D is stronger than both 3D and 1D. We also calculate the two photon absorption (TPA) arising from the stress tensor term. We show that in the SDW, the contribution from stress tensor term to the low-energy peak corresponding to two photon absorption becomes identically zero if we consider the gauge invariant current properly.

Charge Imbalance Effects on Interlayer Hopping and Fermi Surfaces in Multilayered High-T_c Cuprates

We study doping dependence of interlayer hoppings, t_\perp, in multilayered cuprates with four or more CuO_2 planes in a unit cell. When the double occupancy is forbidden in the plane, an effective amplitude of t_\perp in the Gutzwiller approximation is shown to be proportional to the square root of the product of doping rates in adjacent two planes, i.e., t^eff_\perp \propto t_\perp \sqrt{δ_1δ_2}, where δ_1 and δ_2 represent the doping rates of the two planes. More than three-layered cuprates have two kinds of \cuo planes, i.e., inner- and outer planes (IP and OP), resulting in two different values of t^eff_{\perp}, i.e., t^eff_\perp 1 \propto t_\perp \sqrt{δ_IP δ_IP} between IP's, and t^eff_\perp 2 \propto t_\perp \sqrt{δ_IP δ_OP} between IP and OP. Fermi surfaces are calculated in the four-layered t-t'-t''-J model by the mean-field theory. The order parameters, the renormalization factor of t_\perp, and the site-potential making the charge imbalance between IP and OP are self-consistently determined for several doping rates. We show the interlayer splitting of the Fermi surfaces, which may be observed in the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurement.

Controllable pi junction with magnetic nanostructures

We propose a novel Josephson device in which 0 and $π$ states are controlled by an electrical current. In this system, the $π$ state appears in a superconductor/normal metal/superconductor junction due to the non-local spin accumulation in the normal metal which is induced by spin injection from a ferromagnetic electrode. Our proposal offers not only new possibilities for application of superconducting spin-electronic devices but also the in-depth understanding of the spin-dependent phenomena in magnetic nanostructures.

Theory of RIXS in strongly correlated electron systems: Mott gap excitations in cuprates

We theoretically examine the momentum dependence of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrum for one-dimensional and two-dimensional cuprates based on the single-band Hubbard model with realistic parameter values. The spectrum is calculated by using the numerical diagonalization technique for finite-size clusters. We focus on excitations across the Mott gap and clarify spectral features coming from the excitations as well as the physics behind them. Good agreement between the theoretical and existing experimental results clearly demonstrates that the RIXS is a potential tool to study the momentum-dependent charge excitations in strongly correlated electron systems.

Low energy electronic states and triplet pairing in layered cobaltates

The structure of the low-energy electronic states in layered cobaltates is considered starting from the Mott insulating limit. We argue that the coherent part of the wave-functions and the Fermi-surface topology at low doping are strongly influenced by spin-orbit coupling of the correlated electrons on the $t_{2g}$ level. An effective t-J model based on mixed spin-orbital states is radically different from that for the cuprates, and supports unconventional, pseudospin-triplet pairing.

Strength of the d_{x^2-y^2} pairing in the two-leg Hubbard ladder

In the ground state of the doped two-leg Hubbard ladder there are power-law decaying d_{x^2-y^2}-type pairing correlations. It is important to know the strength and the temperature scale of these correlations. For this purpose, we have performed determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of the reducible particle-particle interaction in the Hubbard ladder. In this paper, we report on these calculations and show that, at sufficiently low temperatures, resonant particle-particle scattering takes place in the d_{x^2-y^2} pairing channel for certain values of the model parameters. The QMC data presented here indicate that the d_{x^2-y^2} pairing correlations are strong in the Hubbard ladder.

Theoretical study of angle-resolved two-photon photoemission in two-dimensional insulating cuprates

We propose angle-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy (AR-2PPES) as a technique to detect the location of the bottom of the upper Hubbard band (UHB) in two-dimensional insulating cuprates. The AR-2PPES spectra are numerically calculated for small Hubbard clusters. When the pump photon excites an electron from the lower Hubbard band, the bottom of the UHB is less clear, but when an electron in the nonbonding oxygen band is excited, the bottom of the UHB can be identified clearly, accompanied with additional spectra originated from the spin-wave excitation at half filling.

Exact diagonalization study of optical conductivity in two-dimensional Hubbard model

The optical conductivity σ(ω) in the two-dimensional Hubbard model is examined by applying the exact diagonalization technique to small square clusters with periodic boundary conditions up to \sqrt{20} X \sqrt{20} sites. Spectral-weight distributions at half filling and their doping dependence in the 20-site cluster are found to be similar to those in a \sqrt{18} X \sqrt{18} cluster, but different from 4 X 4 results. The results for the 20-site cluster enable us to perform a systematic study of the doping dependence of the spectral-weight transfer from the region of the Mott-gap excitation to lower-energy regions. We discuss the dependence of the Drude weight and the effective carrier number on the electron density at a large on-site Coulomb interaction.

Superconducting pi qubit with three Josephson junctions

We propose a new qubit consisting of a superconducting ring with two ordinary zero junctions and one ferromagnetic pi junction. In the system, two degenerate stable states appear in the phase space without an external magnetic field because of a competition between the zero and pi states. Quantum tunneling between the two degenerate states leads to a formation of bonding and antibonding states (coherent states) which are used as a bit. For manipulating the states of the qubit, only small external magnetic field around zero is required. This feature leads to a large-scale integration and a construction of the qubit with a smaller size which is robust to the decoherence by external noises.

Effects of antiferromagnetic planes on the superconducting properties of multilayered high-Tc cuprates

We propose a mechanism for high critical temperature (T_c) in the coexistent phase of superconducting- (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AF) CuO_2 planes in multilayered cuprates. The Josephson coupling between the SC planes separated by an AF insulator (Mott insulator) is calculated perturbatively up to the fourth order in terms of the hopping integral between adjacent CuO_2 planes. It is shown that the AF exchange splitting in the AF plane suppresses the so-called pi-Josephson coupling, and the long-ranged 0-Josephson coupling leads to coexistence with a rather high value of T_c.

Magnetic correlations in the Hubbard model on triangular and Kagome lattices

In order to study the magnetic properties of frustrated metallic systems, we present Quantum Monte Carlo data on the magnetic susceptibility of the Hubbard model on triangular and Kagome lattices. We show that the underlying lattice structure is important, and determines the nature and the doping dependence of the magnetic fluctuations. In particular, in the doped Kagome case we find strong short-range magnetic correlations, which makes the metallic Kagome systems a promising field for studies of superconductivity.

Momentum Dependence of Charge Excitations in the Electron-Doped Superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4: a RIXS Study

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge excitations in the electron-doped high-Tc superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. The intraband and interband excitations across the Fermi energy are separated for the first time by tuning the experimental conditions properly to measure charge excitations at low energy. A dispersion relation with q-dependent width emerges clearly in the intraband excitation, while the intensity of the interband excitation is concentrated around 2 eV near the zone center. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculation of the RIXS spectra based on the Hubbard model.

Superconducting pi qubit with a ferromagnetic Josephson junction

Solid-state qubits have the potential for the large-scale integration and for the flexibility of layout for quantum computing. However, their short decoherence time due to the coupling to the environment remains an important problem to be overcome. We propose a new superconducting qubit which incorporates a spin-electronic device: the qubit consists of a superconducting ring with a ferromagnetic pi junction which has a metallic contact and a normal Josephson junction with an insulating barrier. Thus, a quantum coherent two-level state is formed without an external magnetic field. This feature and the simple structure of the qubit make it possible to reduce its size leading to a long decoherence time.

Currents induced by domain wall motion in thin ferromagnetic wires

Historically the role of eddy currents in the motion of Bloch walls has been extensively studied. In contrast the direct interaction of currents with such a moving wall has received very little attention. However recently it has been shown that a wall can be displaced by the effects of a current alone, a fact which is important to the development of spintronics. We report here that such a moving wall within an itinerant ferromagnet constitutes a seat of electro-motive-force (or more accurately a spin-motive-force) which induces a current flow in an external circuit. While an external magnetic field is the most evident means by which to induce Bloch wall motion, it is not the only possibility and the forces intrinsic to certain geometries imply that the state of a spintronics memory device might be read via this mechanism using currents alone and that power amplification of spin polarized pulses is possible. An estimate of the induced current shows it to be technologically useful.

Current-spin coupling for ferromagnetic domain walls in fine wires

The coupling between a current and a domain wall is examined. In the presence of a finite current and the absence of a potential which breaks the translational symmetry, there is a perfect transfer of angular momentum from the conduction electrons to the wall. As a result, the ground state is in uniform motion. This remains the case when relaxation is accounted for. This is described by, appropriately modified, Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations.
