Commissioning experience and beam physics measurements at the SwissFEL Injector Test Facility

The SwissFEL Injector Test Facility operated at the Paul Scherrer Institute between 2010 and 2014, serving as a pilot plant and testbed for the development and realization of SwissFEL, the X-ray Free-Electron Laser facility under construction at the same institute. The test facility consisted of a laser-driven rf electron gun followed by an S-band booster linac, a magnetic bunch compression chicane and a diagnostic section including a transverse deflecting rf cavity. It delivered electron bunches of up to 200 pC charge and up to 250 MeV beam energy at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The measurements performed at the test facility not only demonstrated the beam parameters required to drive the first stage of an FEL facility, but also led to significant advances in instrumentation technologies, beam characterization methods and the generation, transport and compression of ultra-low-emittance beams. We give a comprehensive overview of the commissioning experience of the principal subsystems and the beam physics measurements performed during the operation of the test facility, including the results of the test of an in-vacuum undulator prototype generating radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet and optical range.

Microspectroscopy and Imaging in the THz Range Using Coherent CW Radiation

A novel THz near-field spectrometer is presented which allows to perform biological and medical studies with high spectral resolution combined with a spatial resolution down to l/100. In the setup an aperture much smaller than the used wavelength is placed in the beam very close to the sample. The sample is probed by the evanescent wave behind the aperture. The distance is measured extremely accurate by a confocal microscope. We use monochromatic sources which provide powerful coherent cw radiation tuneable from 50 GHz up to 1.5 THz. Transmission and reflection experiments can be performed which enable us to study solids and molecules in aqueous solution. Examples for spectroscopic investigations on biological tissues are presented.

ESR experiments in the Kondo insulator CeNiSn

Below a characteristic temperature, due to hybridisation effects Kondo insulators exhibit a gap in the electronic density of states and behave like semiconductors. By using Gd3+ electron spin resonance (ESR), the compound CeNiSn was investigated as a representative of this class. In addition, the metal-to-insulator transition was studied as a function of doping for CeNi(1-x)Co(x)Sn and CeNi(1-y)Pt(y)Sn. The linewidth of the Gd resonance yields direct information about the density of states at the Fermi energy. So the size of the gap can clearly be estimated for the pure compound, and the closing of the gap by substitution of Ni by Co or Pt can be followed in detail. These results are compared to measurements of NMR, specific heat and susceptibility.
