Nuclear Drip Line and the Composition of Supernova Matter

The nuclear drip line plays a crucial role in determining the composition of matter under extreme astrophysical conditions. In core-collapse supernovae and neutron-star crusts, matter is driven far from saturation density and nuclear stability; nuclei coexist with a sea of free neutrons, an effect that is present even at zero temperature in neutron-star crusts and becomes more pronounced in the hotter, neutron-rich supernova environment. This makes a careful treatment of drip-line physics essential for a realistic description of the equation of state and composition. In this work, the influence of the nuclear drip line on the baryonic composition of supernova matter is investigated within the framework of nuclear statistical equilibrium (NSE). The composition is evaluated in terms of free nucleons, light clusters, and heavy nuclei at finite temperature and global sub-saturation densities. The results indicate that, at low proton fractions and higher densities, the inclusion of nuclei beyond the drip line enhances the formation of extremely neutron-rich light clusters, leading to a significant reduction in the free-neutron density and the charge fraction of heavy nuclei. These findings demonstrate that drip-line physics has a significant impact on the composition of supernova matter and should be carefully incorporated in supernova modeling and nucleosynthesis studies.

Study of the $^7$Be($d$,$^3$He)$^6$Li* reaction at 5 MeV/u

The measurement of the $^7$Be($d$,$^3$He)$^6$Li* transfer cross section at 5 MeV/u is carried out. The population of the 2.186 MeV excited state of $^6$Li in this reaction channel is observed for the first time. The experimental angular distributions have been analyzed in the finite range DWBA and coupled-channel frameworks. The effect of the $^7$Be($d$,$^3$He)$^6$Li reaction on both the $^6$Li and $^7$Li abundances are investigated at the relevant big-bang nucleosynthesis energies. The excitation function is calculated by TALYS and normalized to the experimental data. The $S$ factor of the ($d$,$^3$He) channel from the present work is about 50$\%$ lower than existing data at nearby energies. At big-bang energies, the $S$ factor is about three orders of magnitude smaller than that of the ($d,p$) channel. The ($d$,$^3$He) reaction rate is found to have a less than 0.1$\%$ effect on the $^{6,7}$Li abundances.

Search for baryon and lepton number violating decays $\boldsymbol{D \rightarrow p\ell}$

We search for the baryon and lepton number violating charm decays, $D \rightarrow p\ell$, where $D$ is either a $D^0$ or a $\overline{D}^0$ and $\ell$ is a muon or an electron, using a data sample of $921\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. In the absence of significant signals, we set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range $(5 - 8) \times 10^{-7}$ at a 90\% confidence level, depending on the decay mode.

High-throughput mechanophenotyping of multicellular spheroids using a microfluidic micropipette aspiration chip

Cell spheroids are in vitro multicellular model systems that mimic the crowded micro-environment of biological tissues. Their mechanical characterization can provide valuable insights in how single-cell mechanics and cell-cell interactions control tissue mechanics and self-organization. However, most measurement techniques are limited to probing one spheroid at a time, require specialized equipment and are difficult to handle. Here, we developed a microfluidic chip that follows the concept of glass capillary micropipette aspiration in order to quantify the viscoelastic behavior of spheroids in an easy- to-handle, high-throughput manner. Spheroids are loaded in parallel pockets via a gentle flow, after which spheroid tongues are aspirated into adjacent aspiration channels using hydrostatic pressure. After each experiment, the spheroids are easily removed from the chip by reversing the pressure and new spheroids can be injected. The presence of multiple pockets with a uniform aspiration pressure, combined with the ease to conduct successive experiments, allows for a high throughput of tens of spheroids per day. We demonstrate that the chip provides accurate deformation data when working at different aspiration pressures. Lastly, we measure the viscoelastic properties of spheroids made of different cell lines and show how these are consistent with previous studies using established experimental techniques. In summary, our chip provides a high-throughput way to measure the viscoelastic deformation behavior of cell spheroids, in order to mechanophenotype different tissue types and examine the link between cell-intrinsic properties and overall tissue behavior.

Magnon-polarons in van der Waals antiferromagnet FePS3

The hybridization of magnons (spin waves) with phonons, if sufficiently strong and comprising long wavelength excitations, may offer a new playground when manipulating the magnetically ordered systems with light. Applying a magnetic field to a quasi-2D antiferromagnet, FePS3, we tune the magnon-gap excitation towards coincidence with the initially lower-in-energy phonon modes. Hybrid magnon-phonon modes, the magnon polarons are unveiled with demonstration of a pronounced avoided crossing between the otherwise bare magnon and phonon excitations. The magnon polarons in FePS3 are primary traced with Raman scattering experiments, but, as we show, they also couple directly to terahertz photons, what evokes their further explorations in the domain of antiferromagnetic optospintronics.

Electronic spectra of linear HC$_5$H and cumulene carbene H$_2$C$_5$

The $1 ^3Σ_u^- \leftarrow X^3Σ_g^-$ transition of linear HC$_5$H (A) has been observed in a neon matrix and gas phase. The assignment is based on mass-selective experiments, extrapolation of previous results of the longer HC$_{2n+1}$H homologues, and density functional and multi-state CASPT2 theoretical methods. Another band system starting at 303 nm in neon is assigned as the $1 ^1 A_1 \leftarrow X ^1 A_1$ transition of the cumulene carbene pentatetraenylidene H$_2$C$_5$ (B).
