Quantum Groups and Noncommutative Geometry

Quantum groups emerged in the latter quarter of the 20th century as, on the one hand, a deep and natural generalisation of symmetry groups for certain integrable systems, and on the other as part of a generalisation of geometry itself powerful enough to make sense in the quantum domain. Just as the last century saw the birth of classical geometry, so the present century sees at its end the birth of this quantum or noncommutative geometry, both as an elegant mathematical reality and in the form of the first theoretical predictions for Planck-scale physics via ongoing astronomical measurements. Noncommutativity of spacetime, in particular, amounts to a postulated new force or physical effect called cogravity.

Noncommutative Differential Geometry and Twisting of Quantum Groups

We outline the recent classification of differential structures for all main classes of quantum groups. We also outline the algebraic notion of `quantum manifold' and `quantum Riemannian manifold' based on quantum group principal bundles, a formulation that works over general unital algebras.

Conceptual Issues for Noncommutative Gravity on Algebras and Finite Sets

We discuss some of the issues to be addressed in arriving at a definitive noncommutative Riemannian geometry that generalises conventional geometry both to the quantum domain and to the discrete domain. This also provides an introduction to our 1997 formulation based on quantum group frame bundles. We outline now the local formulae with general differential calculus both on the base `quantum manifold' and on the structure group Gauge transforms with nonuniversal calculi, Dirac operator, Levi-Civita condition, Ricci tensor and other topics are also covered. As an application we outline an intrinsic or relative theory of quantum measurement and propose it as a possible framework to explore the link between gravity in quantum systems and entropy.

Poisson-Lie T-duality for quasitriangular Lie bialgebras

We introduce a new 2-parameter family of sigma models exhibiting Poisson-Lie T-duality on a quasitriangular Poisson-Lie group $G$. The models contain previously known models as well as a new 1-parameter line of models having the novel feature that the Lagrangian takes the simple form $L=E(u^{-1}u_+,u^{-1}u_-)$ where the generalised metric $E$ is constant (not dependent on the field $u$ as in previous models). We characterise these models in terms of a global conserved $G$-invariance. The models on $G=SU_2$ and its dual $G^\star$ are computed explicitly. The general theory of Poisson-Lie T-duality is also extended; we develop the Hamiltonian formulation and the reduction for constant loops to integrable motion on the group manifold. Finally, we generalise T-duality in the Hamiltonian formulation to group factorisations $D=G\dcross M$ where the subgroups need not be dual or even have the same dimension and need not be connected to the Drinfeld double or to Poisson structures.

Z_n Quasialgebras

Recently we have reformulated the octonions as quasissociative algebras (quasialgebras) living in a symmetric monoidal category. In this note we provide further examples of quasialgebras, namely ones where the nonassociativity is induced by a Z_n-grading and a nontrivial 3-cocycle

New approach to octonions and cayley algebras

We announce a new approach to the octonions as quasiassociative algebras. We strip out the categorical and quasi-quantum group considerations of our longer paper and present here (without proof) some of the more algebraic conclusions

Some Remarks on Braided Group Reconstruction and Braided Doubles

The cross coproduct braided group $Aut(C) \rcocross B$ is obtained by Tannaka-Krein reconstruction from $C^B\to C$ for a braided group $B$ in braided category $C$. We apply this construction to obtain partial solutions to two problems in braided group theory, namely the tensor problem and the braided double. We obtain $Aut(C)\rcocross Aut(C)\isom Aut(C)\lcross Aut(C)$ and higher braided group `spin chains'. The example of the braided group $B(R)\lcross B(R)\lcross...\lcross B(R)$ is described explicitly by R-matrix relations. We also obtain $Aut(C)\rcocross Aut(C)^*$ as a dual quasitriangular `codouble' braided group by reconstruction from the dual category $C^\circ\to C$. General braided double crossproducts $B\dcross C$ are also considered.

Projective module description of the q-monopole

The Dirac q-monopole connection is used to compute projector matrices of quantum Hopf line bundles for arbitrary winding number. The Chern-Connes pairing of cyclic cohomology and K-theory is computed for the winding number -1. The non-triviality of this pairing is used to conclude that the quantum principal Hopf fibration is non-cleft. Among general results, we provide a left-right symmetric characterization of the canonical strong connections on quantum principal homogeneous spaces with an injective antipode. We also provide for arbitrary strong connections on algebraic quantum principal bundles (Hopf-Galois extensions) their associated covariant derivatives on projective modules.

Quasialgebra structure of the octonions

We show that the octonions are a twisting of the group algebra of Z_2 x Z_2 x Z_2 in the quasitensor category of representations of a quasi-Hopf algebra associated to a group 3-cocycle. We consider general quasi-associative algebras of this type and some general constructions for them, including quasi-linear algebra and representation theory, and an automorphism quasi-Hopf algebra. Other examples include the higher 2^n-onion Cayley algebras and examples associated to Hadamard matrices.

Quantum Double for QuasiHopf Algebras

We introduce a quantum double quasitriangular quasi-Hopf algebra $D(H)$ associated to any quasi-Hopf algebra $H$. The algebra structure is a cocycle double cross product. We use categorical reconstruction methods. As an example, we recover the quasi-Hopf algebra of Dijkgraaf, Pasquier and Roche as the quantum double $D^ϕ(G)$ associated to a finite group $G$ and group 3-cocycle $ϕ$.

Quantum and braided diffeomorphism groups

We develop a general theory of `quantum' diffeomorphism groups based on the universal comeasuring quantum group $M(A)$ associated to an algebra $A$ and its various quotients. Explicit formulae are introduced for this construction, as well as dual quasitriangular and braided R-matrix versions. Among the examples, we construct the $q$-diffeomorphisms of the quantum plane $yx=qxy$, and recover the quantum matrices $M_q(2)$ as those respecting its braided group addition law.

Quantum and braided group Riemannian geometry

We formulate quantum group Riemannian geometry as a gauge theory of quantum differential forms. We first develop (and slightly generalise) classical Riemannian geometry in a self-dual manner as a principal bundle frame resolution and a dual pair of canonical forms. The role of Levi-Civita connection is naturally generalised to connections with vanishing torsion and cotorsion, which we introduce. We then provide the corresponding quantum group and braided group formulations with the universal quantum differential calculus. We also give general constructions for examples, including quantum spheres and quantum planes.

We introduce anyonic Lie algebras in terms of structure constants. We provide the simplest examples and formulate some open problems.

Quantum geometry of field extensions

We show that noncommutative differential forms on $k[x]$, $k$ a field, are of the form $Ω^1=k_λ[x]$ where $k_λ\supset k$ is a field extension. We compute the case $C\supset R$ explicitly, where $Ω^1$ is 2-dimensional. We study the induced quantum de Rahm complex, its cohomology and the associated moduli space of flat connections.

Braided-Lie bialgebras

We introduce braided Lie bialgebras as the infinitesimal version of braided groups. They are Lie algebras and Lie coalgebras with the coboundary of the Lie cobracket an infinitesimal braiding. We provide theorems of transmutation, Lie biproduct, bosonisation and double-bosonisation relating braided Lie bialgebras to usual Lie bialgebras. Among the results, the kernel of any split projection of Lie bialgebras is a braided-Lie bialgebra. The Kirillov-Kostant Lie cobracket provides a natural braided-Lie bialgebra on any complex simple Lie algebra $g$, as the transmutation of the Drinfeld-Sklyanin Lie cobracket. Other nontrivial braided-Lie bialgebras are associated to the inductive construction of simple Lie bialgebras along the $C$ and exceptional series.

Quasitriangular and differential structures on bicrossproduct Hopf algebras

Let X=GM be a finite group factorisation. It is shown that the quantum double D(H) of the associated bicrossproduct Hopf algebra $H=kM\cobicross k(G)$ is itself a bicrossproduct $kX\cobicross k(Y)$ associated to a group YX, where $Y=G\times M^{op}$. This provides a class of bicrossproduct Hopf algebras which are quasitriangular. We also construct a subgroup $Y^θX^θ$ associated to every order-reversing automorphism $θ$ of X. The corresponding Hopf algebra $kX^θ\cobicross k(Y^θ)$ has the same coalgebra as H. Using related results, we classify the first order bicovariant differential calculi on H in terms of orbits in a certain quotient space of X.

Advances in Quantum and Braided Geometry

We demonstrate our recent general results on the Casimir construction and moduli space of all bicovariant calculi by means of some detailed examples, including finite-difference and 2-jet cacluli on $\R^n$ and full details of the Casimir construction of the 4D calculus of $SU_q(2)$. We likewise demonstrate our previous general constructions with T. Brzezinski of quantum group gauge theory with examples of such nonuniversal differential calculi on spacetime. We outline a notion of quantum homotopy of a quantum space. We indicate a possible application to classical integrable systems.

Quantum Geometry and the Planck Scale

We consider some general aspects of the new noncommutative or quantum geometry coming out of the theory of quantum groups, in connection with Planck scale physics. A generalisation of Fourier or wave-particle duality on curved spaces emerges. Another feature is the need for particles with fractional or braid statistics. The conformal group also has a special role.
