Performance of the Fully-equipped Spin Flip Chopper For Neutron Lifetime Experiment at J-PARC

To solve the ''neutron lifetime puzzle,'' where measured neutron lifetimes differ depending on the measurement methods, an experiment with pulsed neutron beam at J-PARC is in progress. In this experiment, neutrons are bunched into 40-cm lengths using a spin flip chopper (SFC), where the statistical sensitivity was limited by the aperture size of the SFC. The SFC comprises three sets of magnetic supermirrors and two resonant spin flippers. In this paper, we discuss an upgrade to enlarge the apertures of the SFC. With this upgrade, the statistics per unit time of the neutron lifetime experiment increased by a factor of 2.8, while maintaining a signal-to-noise ratio of 250-400 comparable to the previous one. Consequently, the time required to reach a precision of 1 s in the neutron lifetime experiment was reduced from 590 to 170 days, which is a significant reduction in time. This improvement in statistic will also contribute to the reduction of systematic uncertainties, such as background evaluation, fostering further advancements in the neutron lifetime experiments at J-PARC.

Pairing interaction in superconducting UCoGe tunable by magnetic field

The mechanism of unconventional superconductivity, such as high-temperature-cuprate, Fe-based, and heavy-fermion superconductors, has been studied as a central issue in condensed-matter physics. Spin fluctuations, instead of phonons, are considered to be responsible for the formation of Cooper pairs, and many efforts have been made to confirm this mechanism experimentally. Although a qualitative consensus seems to have been obtained, experimental confirmation has not yet been achieved. This is owing to a lack of the quantitative comparison between theory and experiments. Here, we show a semi-quantitative comparison between the superconducting-transition temperature ($T_{\rm SC}$) and spin fluctuations derived from the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment on the ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor UCoGe, in which the FM fluctuations and superconductivity are tunable by external fields. The enhancement and abrupt suppression of $T_{\rm SC}$ by applied fields, as well as the pressure variation of $T_{\rm SC}$ around the FM criticality are well understood by the change in the FM fluctuations on the basis of the single-band spin-triplet theoretical formalism. The present comparisons strongly support the theoretical formalism of spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity, particularly in UCoGe.

Integrating out Holographic QCD back to Hidden Local Symmetry

We develop a previously proposed gauge-invariant method to integrate out infinite towers of vector and axialvector mesons arising as Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes in a class of holographic models of QCD (HQCD). We demonstrate that HQCD can be reduced to the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) with the hidden local symmetry (HLS) (so-called HLS-ChPT) having only the lowest KK mode identified as the HLS gauge boson, and the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. The ${\cal O} (p^4)$ terms in the HLS-ChPT are completely determined by integrating out infinite towers of vector/axialvector mesons in HQCD: Effects of higher KK modes are fully included in the coefficients. As an example, we apply our method to the Sakai-Sugimoto model.

Implications of Holographic QCD in ChPT with Hidden Local Symmetry

Based on the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) with the hidden local symmetry, we propose a methodology to calculate the large $N_c$ corrections in the holographic QCD (HQCD). As an example, we apply the method to an HQCD model recently proposed by Sakai and Sugimoto. We show that the $ρ$-$π$-$π$ coupling becomes in good agreement with the experiment due to the $1/N_c$-subleading corrections.
